Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about the contested status of Mariupol, Florida's new tax targeting Disneyland, some businesses' bad weeks, and other top news for Friday, April 22nd. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day. We can control a few things—our attitude, our effort, our focus, and how we go about treating others. Tim Tebow. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Putin has been busy. Capturing the port city of Mariupol is a crucial part of Russia's plan to isolate the Donbass region, but thousands of Ukrainian fighters remained bunkered in the Avstol steel plant, preventing its capture. Yesterday, Putin decided they don't count and simply declared victory. Putin also tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile, dubbed the Satan-2, that he said will make the West, quote, think twice before considering aggression against Russia. None of that worked to mend relationships. The U.S., U.K., and Canada staged a walkout of a G20 meeting in protest
Starting point is 00:00:58 as the Russian delegate began speaking, and Wimbledon announced that Russian and Belarusian athletes will be banned from this year's Wimbledon for their country's unsportsmanlike conduct toward Ukraine. While you likely have no control over this war, you can control how you speak about it. Leave others with no doubt of your love for everyone involved, even for people whose actions you do not support. Luke 6.32 says, If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. Since 1967, Disney has existed in its own small world,
Starting point is 00:01:35 the independent district of Reedy Creek near Orlando, Florida. This special status has afforded Disney massive tax breaks and little oversight. But it also means that the company, not the taxpayer, largely pays for municipal maintenance around the parks. Now all that may be over. Yesterday, Florida's Republican-controlled House voted to dissolve Disney World's private government. It's seen as retaliation for Mickey Mouse opposing Florida's parental rights and education bill, dubbed Don't Say Gay by critics, which restricts classroom instruction on sexuality and gender before fourth grade. Governor DeSantis says that Disney's economic power as Florida's largest employer, should not grant it magic powers. Disney hasn't commented.
Starting point is 00:02:09 It's unclear how the move will impact Florida taxpayers, but expect the case to be frozen in legal battles. Culturally hot topics frequently make people think, speak, and act poorly, including us. We can respect others and represent God better if we are quick to listen and slow to speak. James 1 19 and 20 says, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness. Back in the day, as in last year, streaming was king and adding a plus to your name was a surefire way to print cash. That all ended in 2022. For the first time in a decade, Netflix lost subscribers to the tune of 200,000 in Q1, and they're expecting to lose another 2.5 million in Q2, and investors shrieked.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Their stock has dropped over 35% since Tuesday, and it's down over 60% this year, earning the title of the worst performing stock in the S&P 500 this year. Meanwhile, CNN announced its shuttering CNN+, just three weeks after its $300 million launch. Pitched as the future of the network, the platform reportedly had just 10,000 active users. Not everyone had a bad week, though. Tesla's stock was up 10% after beating analysts' expectations. It's not that corporate earnings and the stock market aren't important, they're just not God of the universe important. Whether the markets are up or down, nothing of eternal significance has changed. Here's a quote to consider from Edward
Starting point is 00:03:34 Mote, written in 1863, on Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand. This podcast is brought to you by The Bible Memory Project. We know of a few good methods for memorizing Bible verses, including praying for it to happen miraculously or good old-fashioned repetition. The Bible Memory Project is making option number two much easier. Every month, they select four verses to memorize and they mail you resources to help. You'll get beautifully designed bookmarks and postcards with verses fully written out and stickers and wristbands with the verses acronym. That's the first letter of each word. The acronym is a huge help, but honestly, so is just having the selected verses put in front of you. Use code TPO, all uppercase, for 50% off your first month, and start or restart memorizing the Bible today at BibleMemProject.com. Check it out in the show notes.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Check it out in the show notes. In other brews, we've got a rapid round of updates. It's not just gas and cream cheese. The median price for sold existing homes rose 15% to $375,300 over the last year. The jump in price is largely due to a home shortage. There are currently only 950,000 houses for sale right now in the States. That's down 9.5% from this time last year. New Mexico fined the producers of Rust, the movie set where Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Helena Hutchins.
Starting point is 00:04:56 The state levied the maximum fee possible, citing, quote, plain indifference to recognized hazards associated with use of firearms on set. A criminal investigation is ongoing. The White House released a plan to combat the record high level of drug overdoses that focuses on harm reduction. It includes increasing access to clean needles, fentanyl test strips, and Naxalon, which can reverse an overdose. Critics say these things will simply enable more illegal drug use. Don't shred that mask quite yet. The Department of Justice is appealing the ruling that voided the public transportation mask mandate,
Starting point is 00:05:30 saying it isn't just about remasking people today, but about protecting the CDC's power to issue future public health mandates. For now, masks are not required by most airlines, TSA, Amtrak, Uber, or Lyft. Rakeem Mayers, better known as ASAP Rocky, was arrested for allegedly shooting an acquaintance who sustained a minor injury in Hollywood back in November. ASAP was arrested at the airport, returning from a vacation in Barbados with his girlfriend, Rihanna, who is pregnant with their first child. That's all we have for today.
