Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about state lawmakers' shakeups, reported abuse in the Catholic Church, Operation Cookie Monster, and other top news for Friday, April 7th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day. Jesus knew Lazarus would rise again, still he wept, because embracing pain is not negating faith, it's actually part of being in the likeness of God. Carlos Rodriguez. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Some states' legislative rosters have been shakeups this week. In Tennessee, two state House Democrats were expelled yesterday in what critics condemned as a bipartisan hit job. The representatives were under fire for their role in last week's gun reform protests that halted legislative business. Votes to expel a third House Democrat failed by one vote. It was the first non-bipartisan expulsion in Tennessee history. Meanwhile, North Carolina State House Republican Trisha Cotham announced Wednesday that she was switching parties, saying she did not recognize the Democratic Party anymore. Her switcheroo means more than
Starting point is 00:01:09 just new business cards. It gives North Carolina Republicans a veto-proof supermajority, allowing them to override Democratic Governor Cooper's vetoes and enact laws. Cotham's move was criticized by the state's Democratic Party as deceit of the highest order and a betrayal of the voters. Our hope is never contingent on what happens in a Capitol building. It's much more secure than that. Regardless of whether things get worse or better during your lifetime, everything eventually ends well for followers of Christ. 1 Peter chapter 1 verses 3 through 4 says, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection

The Maryland Attorney General's Office released a 463-page report concluding that more than 150 Catholic priests and others associated with the Archdiocese of Baltimore sexually abused over 600 children. The AG's investigation, which began in 2019, covered 80 years of alleged abuse and accuses church leaders of decades of cover-ups. The report was redacted to protect confidential grand jury materials, meaning the identities of some accused clergy were removed. Baltimore Archbishop William Lurie apologized to the victims, saying the report details a
Starting point is 00:02:39 reprehensible time in the history of this archdiocese, a time that will not be covered up, ignored, or forgotten. Though the state says they have no plans to file criminal lawsuits, the Maryland legislature passed a bill last month that ends a statute of limitations on abuse-related civil lawsuits. Pray for all involved in the state of Maryland. First, for the victims, that they can find healing from the abuse they faced at the hands of trusted clergy. Pray also for the perpetrators, that they would repent and seek God's mercy. Psalm 147, verse 3 says,
Starting point is 00:03:15 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. An international sting dubbed Operation Cookie Monster brought down a sprawling dark web marketplace on Wednesday. Since its start in 2018, Genesis Market operated by selling stolen credentials and digital fingerprints that allowed cybercriminals to hack into victims' assets. including the U.S., U.K., Germany, Spain, and Sweden, came together to put the kibosh on the site, which reportedly made $8.7 million, selling 80 million credentials from more than 2 million people. Genesis has been linked to millions of global cyberattacks, and FBI officials dubbed the takedown the biggest operation of its kind. So far, it's led to the arrest of nearly 120 suspected users. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith. Today's episode is sponsored by Haya.
