Starting point is 00:00:26 shots. Yesterday, Uncle Sam maxed out his credit card. In explain it like I'm five terms, the U.S. spends more money than it makes, so it borrows money to pay the bills. Congress set the IOU limit to $31.4 trillion, which was met yesterday. Now, the Treasury Department must use extraordinary measures to avoid default. Those measures include moving money between agencies to pay bills as they become due, suspending some ongoing investments like retired postal workers' health plans, and checking White House couch cushions for coins, maybe. Treasury Secretary Yellen says these maneuvers should last until June-ish, but the only lasting solution is for Congress to raise or suspend the
Starting point is 00:01:11 debt limit. And there's a stalemate. Some House Republicans are demanding spending cuts be agreed to first, but the White House says there's no negotiating over the debt ceiling. Jesus showed compassion when people expected rejection, gentleness when people expected anger, and love when people expected hate. Actor Alec Baldwin will be criminally charged by New Mexico prosecutors for the fatal shooting of cinematographer Helena Hutchins on the set of the film Rust. Baldwin and the movie's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, each will be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Crypto leader Genesis is also expected to file bankruptcy this week as FTX's collapse continues its unhappy ripple effect. Our hope is never contingent on an economic outcome. On Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, family members gathered at the National Civil Rights Museum to protest the slow release of information. On Thursday, the State Department launched a new program to allow everyday citizens to sponsor refugees. It's a role previously filled by non-profits, but now five or more Americans can form their own group to help refugees resettle in the U.S. The first phase of the program will start in the first half of 2023.
