Biden gets to make his first Supreme Court nomination, Spotify chooses Joe Rogan, big
economic news causes the stock market to keep swinging, and other top news for Friday, January
28th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day, pray as though everything depended on God, work as though
everything depended on you.
St. Augustine.
depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you. St. Augustine.
Stephen Breyer is retiring at the end of June. And if you're like the 98% of Americans who don't know who that is, we're here to help. Breyer is a Supreme Court justice and part of the high
court's liberal minority. Appointed in 1994 by Bill Clinton, Breyer has faced pressure from
progressives to
hang up his robe so that Democrats can confirm his successor before they potentially lose their
Senate majority later this year. Yesterday, President Biden reaffirmed his campaign promise
to nominate a black woman to the Supremes, calling the representation long overdue.
While replacing a left-leaning justice with another left-leaning justice won't change the
court's ideological makeup,
lifetime appointments mean a new justice is always significant.
Democrats have the opportunity to replace an 83-year-old with someone who can serve for decades.
The Supreme Court has great power to make change,
but as Christians, our hope is never contingent on a court ruling or a justice's interpretation of the law.
It's much more secure than that.
For you are my hope, Lord God, my confidence from my youth.
Psalm 71 5.
Multiple waves of COVID meant economic growth was inconsistent last year,
but overall it was strong.
Yesterday, the Commerce Department reported the U.S. economy grew 5.7% in 2021, the most since 1984.
That was one of the many data points that investors are digesting.
The Federal Reserve announced plans to remove the training wheels and begin steadily increasing interest rates in March.
Tesla announced its profit jumped 87% to $5.5 billion.
But the stock dropped 11% based on Elon Musk's concerns that supply chain issues will persist.
Or maybe because Tesla might be prioritizing a humanoid robot over new cars.
If you want to see pictures of the robot, click the link in our show notes.
And also Apple beat expectations and said that their supply chain woes are improving.
The amount of big and sometimes conflicting news has made for an unusually bumpy week in the stock market.
Here's a verse to consider if your mood starts swinging with stock market.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18.2.
If you want to listen to Neil Young, you'll have to dig out your CDs or reactivate your title subscription.
On Tuesday, the folk rock singer told Spotify that they needed to choose between him and Joe Rogan,
whom Young accuses of spreading false information about vaccines.
Spoiler alert, Spotify chose Rogan and removed Young's discography.
The controversy stems from Rogan hosting recently banned from Twitter virologist Dr. Robert Malone
in an episode that prompted over a thousand doctors to request that Spotify
establish a clear policy on misinformation.
The streaming platform said that it already has clear policies
and has removed over 20,000 podcasts related to COVID,
but that they must balance freedom for creators.
And there's also the economic side. Spotify paid $100 million for exclusive rights to the Joe Rogan experience
back in 2020, and it is their number one podcast. Culturally hot topics like misinformation and
cancel culture frequently make people think, speak, and act poorly, which includes us. We
can respect others and represent God better if we're quick to listen and slow to speak. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,
for human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness. James 1, 19-20.
Today's podcast is brought to you by GEM. You know when you go to the store and see all those
super healthy power foods like chia seeds, ashwagandha, probiotics, algae, you know, et cetera,
and then you just end up buying ingredients
for nachos again?
Well, now there's GEM,
the first whole food vitamin.
Instead of trying to catch up
on all those missed vitamins and minerals
with pills that are often more nonsense than truth,
GEM makes it easy to just start eating
those healthy superfoods.
Yes, eating them.
There's nothing in GEM other than real food
with real nutrients that you chew, swallow, and digest. There's nothing in Gem other than real food with real nutrients that
you chew, swallow, and digest. And now is a great time to try it. TPO readers get 30% off with the
code TPO30. Check the link in our show notes to find out more. Happy chewing.
In other brews, we've got a rapid round of updates.
A bomb cyclone is expected to slam the Northeast with snow and wind this weekend,
putting 42 million people, including the cities of Philadelphia, Boston, and New York, under winter storm warnings.
While still uncertain, meteorologists warn that some areas will likely be measuring snow in feet, not inches.
If you're in that area, please stay safe.
Pencils down.
The U.S. provided a written response to Russia,
denying their core demand that NATO promise to never allow Ukraine to join their ranks
but allowing room for negotiation on things like arms control.
A Kremlin spokesperson said the reply didn't give much reason for optimism.
The Baseball Hall of Fame announced its 2022 roster, including David Ortiz of the
Boston Red Sox. Conspicuously absent from the list was Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. It was
both superstars' final year of eligibility, but they were passed over for their use of steroids.
There's actually two Omicrons, BA1 and BA2, and BA2 just arrived in the United States. But it seems like that's
okay. This cousin to the original Omicron now accounts for 50% of cases in some countries,
like South Africa, and there's no evidence yet that it's meaningfully more transmissible or severe.
Big Ben Roethlisberger is hanging up his helmet after 18 seasons and two Super Bowl wins with
the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Meanwhile, the Saints joined the head coachless hunt this week as Sean Payton announced he was
stepping away, but not retiring, after 16 years with the franchise. Well, that's all we have for
today. Thanks so much for listening. If you're thinking, wow, I just love this podcast and I
want to see this reach more Christians, here's a breakdown on how you can best support us.
If you're listening on the Apple Podcast app, give us a five-star rating and drop a review.
We do actually read all of them and take them to heart. Like this review from a username Holden,
succinct, clear, and helpful. A balanced approach to sharing the news that can so easily be loaded
with bias and agendas. I love that it's brief, clear, and not fluffed up. It is also cool that
relevant scriptures are quoted to contrast with sometimes bleak news.
Holden, thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to submit a review.
We're so grateful for the feedback.
If you're listening on Spotify, give us a follow and hit the notification bell to never miss a new episode.
There is also an option to leave a five-star rating, but it's a newer feature and it's only doable on your phone, not on a desktop or browser just yet.
We sincerely appreciate all your support and hope you have a great weekend.
We'll see you back here on Monday.
