Starting point is 00:00:00 Today, we're talking about the smoky air on the East Coast, a Trump legal update, news out of the Supreme Court, and other top news for Friday, June 9th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day, God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from himself because it is not there, there is no such thing. C.S. Lewis. Let's get started with some espresso shots. The air in New York got so bad Wednesday that breathing it was like smoking one half a pack of cigarettes a day. Smoke from more than 400 wildfires burning in Canada drifted over Uncle
Starting point is 00:00:46 Sam's East Coast, creating historic pollution levels and putting nearly a third of Americans under air quality alerts. Wednesday afternoon, New York City had the worst air of any major city on Earth, with an air quality index of 413 out of 500. For reference, 0 to 50 is considered good. The international community has lent hundreds of firefighters to help Canada fight the historic flames. The smoke closed schools, canceled Major League Baseball games and Broadway shows, and disrupted flights.
Starting point is 00:01:21 While air quality is improving, sensitive groups like the elderly, young children, and people with respiratory issues are still advised to remain indoors or wear high-quality masks. Pray for those affected by the fires and poor air quality. If you're in an impacted area, consider how you can help those inensitive groups that may be stuck inside. Luke chapter 6 verse 30 says, give to everyone who asks you, and from someone who takes your things, don't ask for them back. Former President Trump says he's been indicted. Again. The Justice Department has not publicly confirmed any indictment, but multiple outlets report Trump faces seven charges related to mishandling classified documents and obstructing justice. Special Counsel Jack Smith sent a letter to former President Trump's lawyers earlier this week, saying No. 45 is the target of an investigation into mishandling classified
Starting point is 00:02:25 documents retrieved from Mar-a-Lago in August. Trump's legal team criticized the integrity of the investigation, calling it baseless and an ongoing injustice, and met with Smith and another DOJ official. Trump himself has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigation a witch hunt. Separately, Trump's trial over falsifying business records related to payments made to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election has been set for March 25, 2024. When discussing divisive topics such as Trump's legal troubles, remember that both your stance and how you take your stance reflect on Christ. We shouldn't sacrifice relationships to win arguments. Romans chapter 12 verse 18 says,
Starting point is 00:03:13 If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. The Supremes have released seven justices' financial records. The annual disclosures detail how much money justices receive when they're not wearing their robes, from things like book sales, teaching gigs, and investments. For the first time, they also reported free travel, meals, and other hospitality. For example, Justice Brown Jackson received a $1,200 floral arrangement from Oprah. Justices Coney Barrett, Kavanaugh, and Gorsuch were each flown to Italy for various conferences. And Justice Sotomayor was flown to Scotland by NYU. Justice Thomas, whose relationship
Starting point is 00:04:02 with Republican billionaire Harlan Crowe has been under scrutiny, and Justice Alito, both requested extensions. The court is expected to release a number of rulings this month before adjourning for summer. Yesterday, it unexpectedly struck down Alabama's congressional districts, ruling they unlawfully dilute the power of black voters. Alabama must redraw district lines before next year's elections. Here is a verse to consider when you sense a debate over a Supreme Court justice, or anything else, brewing. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for human anger does not accomplish God's righteousness.
Starting point is 00:04:44 James, chapter chapter 1 verses 19 through 20. This episode is sponsored by Tuvu. Social media platforms are amazing. In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates. CNN has parted ways with CEO Chris Licht after a tumultuous 13 months that saw declines in ratings, profits, and employee morale. Licht's tenure had plenty of controversy, including decisions to fire multiple anchors and the handling of a town hall with former President Trump, and ended days after a long and unflattering profile in The Atlantic. Lionel Messi is headed to Miami. Widely considered the world's best soccer player, Messi reportedly turned down $500 million to play in Saudi Arabia in favor of a more creative offer
Starting point is 00:06:26 by Inter Miami and MLS. The Miami deal is believed to include part ownership of the club and revenue share agreements with Apple TV Plus and Adidas. Cuba has reportedly reached an agreement to host a Chinese spy base 100 miles off the coast of Florida. China is reportedly paying the cash-strapped island billions of dollars for their within eavesdropping distance real estate in hopes of being able to intercept electronic communications in the Southeast U.S., which includes multiple military bases, and monitor ship traffic. As a protest of concessions made in debt-ceiling negotiations, a group of 11 conservative lawmakers joined House Democrats in voting against a usually routine rules vote, temporarily
Starting point is 00:07:18 freezing the House from considering any legislation. House Speaker McCarthy admitted he was blindsided, but seemed optimistic for a quick resolution. Kilauea, Hawaii's second-largest volcano, began erupting Wednesday, bringing big tourism to the Big Island. Authorities say lava flow is declining, infrastructure is unthreatened, and eruption activity is confined to a closed area of Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park. The Hawaii Tourism Authority has urged visitors to be mindful and respectful when visiting the area. That's all we have for today. Thanks so much for listening. If you're listening on the Apple
