Melissa B. Kruger Let's get started with some espresso shots. On Wednesday, Kyle Rittenhouse took the stand in his own defense against homicide charges. His trial is one of the most watched in recent memory. Last August, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse traveled to Black Lives Matter protests following the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Wisconsin, saying he wanted to protect businesses from looters. Late that night, Rittenhouse claims he was confronted and lunged at by a man. Publicly available footage then shows Rittenhouse was chased by a few men, fell down, and fired four shots at his pursuers. Two people, Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, were killed, and a third, Gage Grosskreutz, was injured. The trial

has been contentious. The prosecution is arguing that Kyle was acting as a reckless vigilante, while the defense claims he was acting solely in self-defense. Those sentiments are generally echoed by liberals and conservatives in the nation at large. Throughout the trial, there have been some key moments. Gage Grosskreutz testified that he was pointing his pistol at Rittenhouse when he was shot in the arm. Rittenhouse began sobbing on the stand when recounting the events immediately before shooting Rosenbaum. A man who was with Rittenhouse during an earlier altercation testified that he didn't view Rosenbaum as a threat. And last, the judge scolded the prosecution, when jurors weren't present, for introducing a barred line of questioning. The defense requested

a mistrial with no chance of retrial over the same incident. Closing arguments could come as soon as later today. While you likely have no control over this trial, you can control how you speak about it. Leave others with no doubt of your love for everyone involved, even for people whose actions you do not support. No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need so that it gives grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4 29. Balloons, egos, and consumer prices have one thing in common, inflation. The U.S. broke a 31-year-old inflation record as the Consumer Price Index, which is the main measure of inflation, hit 6.2% in October. That marks five straight months with inflation over 5%. And while we haven't quite hit the, you know, paying $1,000 for a loaf of bread level yet, it is hurting consumer confidence and has completely negated the recent rise in workers' wages.

And officials have conceded that it isn't as transitory as they originally hoped, and expect the prices will continue to rise well into 2022. Exactly what or who is to blame depends on who you ask. Some point to pandemic-related supply chain shortages, while others are blaming decisions made by the White House. It's certainly become a drag on both President Biden and VP Harris's approval ratings. Rising prices can make anyone anxious, yet difficult times like these give Christians the incredible opportunity to share rather than hoard what God has given us. In other brews, we've got a rapid round of updates. Rivian, an electric car startup, went public on Wednesday for $86 billion, the biggest IPO of an American company since Facebook. Rivian has a tough road ahead, but has also secured a few powerful partners. Amazon now owns 20% of the startup and has placed massive pre-orders for delivery trucks, and Ford owns 12%.

The Pentagon has confirmed that dozens of family members of American troops remain in Afghanistan nearly three months after the U.S. ended its military mission in the country. The Biden administration says it is currently taking steps to compile a database of all such relatives left in Afghanistan. Yesterday was 11-11, or what's known as Singles Day in China. In 2009, China's online retail giant, Alibaba, turned the anti-Valentine's Day into a shopping extravaganza with massive deals.

This year was slightly toned down amid China's tech crackdown, but they still managed $84.54 billion in sales, which dwarfs both Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Representative Paul Gosar, a Republican from Arizona, tweeted an animated video depicting the killing of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which Twitter quickly flagged as hateful conduct. Democrats are condemning Gosar, moving to censure him in the House,

and criticizing Republican leaders for not being more outspoken against the video. China and the U.S. announced a rare joint statement pledging to combat climate change. While both sides acknowledged that there is no shortage of differences between the two countries, the statement recognized that climate change is a threat affecting the whole world, and it is worth working together to tackle it. People Magazine named Paul Rudd this year's sexiest man. Ant-Man says both he and his wife are quite surprised, but that he's going to lean into it hard by making business cards and going to more yacht parties.
