Today, we're talking about the latest January 6th committee meeting, the latest inflation
numbers and what it means for Social Security beneficiaries, a big bill for Alex Jones,
and other top news for Friday, October 14th.

Here's the quote of the day.
Truth is given not to be contemplated, but to be done.
Life is an action, not a thought.
Frederick W. Robertson.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
After a multi-month break, episode nine of the January 6th hearings aired live yesterday.
The Democratic-led committee showed previously unseen footage of lawmakers phoning for help
while in lockdown, Secret Service messages anticipating violence, and testimony that then-President Trump's decision to reject election results was,
quote, premeditated, not based on evidence. The hearing ended with the committee voting
9-0 to subpoena Trump for documents and testimony under oath, a significant escalation.
The committee can't bring criminal charges, but is considering criminal referrals for,
quote, multiple people, and they've promised specific recommendations to, quote, prevent January 6th from happening again. A final report is
expected to be released before the panel formally expires on January 3rd. Trump and his allies have
repeatedly criticized the committee for being politically motivated and for cherry-picking
evidence. Culturally hot topics frequently make people think, speak, and act poorly, including us. Pardon our copy and paste from the last 12 months,
but inflation was higher than expected last month.
Consumer prices rose 0.4% in September and are up 8.2% over the last year.
Core inflation, a measure that excludes volatile food and energy prices, is up 6.6% over the last year.
That's the highest it's been since 1982, thanks largely to rising shelter costs.
The stubbornly high
inflation does mean a few more crisp $20 bills for your grandparents. To reflect the higher cost
of living, Social Security beneficiaries will be receiving an 8.7% boost. That's an extra $146 a
month on average in 2023, and it's the largest increase in 40 years. The stock market had a
brutal morning but staged a massive afternoon comeback. The Dow closed up 828 points, or 2.8%, its highest percentage gain this year.
Regardless of whether the broader economy is struggling or thriving,
Christians should seek to give generously of our time, talents, and resources to those in greater need.

Hebrews 13. 16 says, Don't neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.
Alex Jones may be looking to pick up an evening shift at the Amazon warehouse. After being hit
with nearly $50 million in damages from a Texas jury, a separate Connecticut jury just ordered
Jones to pay 15 plaintiffs nearly $1 billion in damages. Yes, that's with a B.
The damages stem from a defamation case against Jones for his claims that the Sandy Hook
elementary school shooting was a hoax. Jones has since recanted but said, live on his show
InfoWars as the verdict was read, that he was, quote, proud to be under this level of attack.
It's unclear how much money plaintiffs will actually see. Jones's company has declared
bankruptcy and Jones himself claims to not have much money,
but that's under scrutiny.
He plans to appeal and faces a third trial later this year.
It's easy to become angry and indignant over world events,
but much more difficult to live with the tension of desiring change
while simultaneously loving everyone involved.
Followers of Christ are called to live in that tension,
loving the very people they work against. Matthew 5, 44 and 45 says, But I tell you, love your enemies and
pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven. For
he causes his Son to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the
unrighteous. This podcast is brought to you by the Compelled Podcast.
If John Piper and NPR made a podcast together, it would be kind of like Compelled Podcast.
Compelled uses sound effects, music, and narration to bring Christian testimonies to life.
And these stories aren't your average Sunday school fair.
Gangsters, drug addiction, assassination survivors, and porn-addicted pastors, there's a little bit of everything.
Get started with episode 30, featuring Grace Burnham, a missionary to the Philippines who was held hostage by terrorists
for over a year, yet knew Jesus was calling her to forgive her captors. Listen on your podcast app

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
Nury Martinez, who'd already stepped back from leading the Los Angeles City Council,
has now resigned from the council entirely. It's further fallout from a secretly recorded conversation where she made multiple racist
comments and discussed how to redraw city council districts to expand Latino political power.
The California Attorney General announced an investigation into the restricting discussion. Breakout the Minions Band-Aids kids ages 5 and
up are cleared to be boosted, but recent polls have highlighted Americans' booster fatigue and
confusion. While the CDC recommends all fully vaccinated people age 12 and older get boosted,
two-thirds of adults have no plans to get boosted, and half say they've heard almost nothing about it. FBI analyst Brian Otten testified that the agency used
uncorroborated information to obtain surveillance warrants for former President Trump's 2016
campaign. An unsubstantiated dossier prepared by former British spy Christopher Steele helped
inform the FBI's claims that Trump was colluding with Russia.
But even when offered $1 million, Steele couldn't corroborate the allegations.
The U.N. General Assembly voted 143 to 5 in favor of a non-binding resolution condemning Russia's
quote, illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory, and they demanded Russia withdraw its troops.
It's the strongest support for Ukraine from the General Assembly to date. North Korea, Syria, Belarus, and Nicaragua joined Russia in
voting nay, and China and 34 other nations abstained. Channeling his inner anchorman,
Elon Musk changed his Twitter bio to perfume salesman and released a $100 bottle called
Burnt Hair, selling $1 million worth of the, quote, essence of repugnant desire in the first few hours via his boring company's website.
It's unclear whether there's actual burnt hair or bits of real panther in the perfume.
