Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about the sparring match between the DOJ and DJT, Wall Street's tough start to the school year, a last-minute report on crimes against humanity in China, and other top news for Friday, September 2nd. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day. More men fail through lack of purpose than lack of talent. Billy Sunday. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Former President Trump and the Department of Justice continue their sparring match over the now-famous documents removed from Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence. In recent court filings, Trump's team called the August 8th search, quote, unprecedented, unnecessary, and legally unsupported. And they said that a president being in possession of, quote, his own presidential records is not cause for a raid. The DOJ disagrees, saying they only executed the search warrant after multiple attempts to retrieve the classified documents in less obtrusive ways, and they found evidence of potential, quote, obstructive conduct. As for the papers themselves, yesterday, a judge delayed ruling on Trump's request for a special master to review documents seized by the FBI, which the DOJ says would unnecessarily delay
Starting point is 00:01:10 their investigation and harm national security, but she ordered the public release of a more detailed list of what was taken. The world has different priorities than God does, and many eternally insignificant things are compelling for a season. These things may not be wrong to follow, but neither should they consume our attention. Romans 12, 2 says, do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. Wall Street clearly wasn't ready for school to start again. The stock market fell for a fifth straight day yesterday, continuing a losing streak that started mid-August and has wiped out much of the summer's gains.
Starting point is 00:01:50 There are a few companies leading the nosedive. Snap Inc. is laying off 1,600 employees after a series of bad financial reports. Snap stock is up this week, but down over 75% over the year. Bed Bath & Beyond's 20% off everything coupons have taken on a new meaning after the once mighty big box store announced that it's closing 150 stores and laying off 20% of its corporate employees. Their stock was down 35% this week. And finally, NVIDIA was ordered by the U.S. government to stop selling its computer chips in China and Russia, and its stock is down 15% this week. Here's a verse to consider when refreshing
Starting point is 00:02:25 Robinhood or Instagram or ESPN.com each morning. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things, for you died and your life is hidden with Christ and God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3, 2-4. In findings that were published just moments before her term ended, the UN human rights chief affirmed that, quote, serious human rights violations have been committed in China's Xinjiang region. The long-awaited report found that China's, quote, arbitrary and discriminatory detention, that includes forced internment camp labor, of the majority Muslim Uyghur people constituted crimes against humanity. The 48-page
Starting point is 00:03:05 publication recommended prompt action from the Chinese government, and they did immediately respond with a 131-page rebuttal denying abuses. The road to the report's release has been bumpy. China has been actively trying to bury it even after protests surrounding the treatment of Uyghurs encircled the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Activists are glad that the accusations are finally being addressed. However, without an incoming UN human rights chief named, doubt remains around next steps given the final hour timing of the report. Christians have a hard job. We must simultaneously celebrate justice and come alongside victims in their pain while retaining a love for those in the wrong. Matthew 5, 44 and 45 says,
Starting point is 00:03:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven. For he causes his Son to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. The sparkling water craze is in full swing, but let's be real. It's not because we prefer water that tastes like it was bottled near a single dried out lime. It's just healthier than soda. Until now. With plant fiber, prebiotics, botanicals, and a touch of magic,
Starting point is 00:04:13 Olipop has made soda healthier and more delicious. Seriously, it tastes like the soda you grew up sipping, but it's actually good for your digestive health. They're targeting original COVID and Omicron BA4 and BA5. The data reviewed came from trials in mice, not humans, which is standard practice for flu shots, but it's a first for a COVID vaccine. Uncle Sam's pre-ordered 170 million
Starting point is 00:04:56 doses should be available, quote, within days. Life's short and it's getting shorter. Last year, life expectancy in the U.S. fell to 76.1 years. That's down from 78.8 years in 2019. It's the most significant two-year decline in a century, and it was spurred primarily by COVID and record drug overdoses. Life expectancy also varies by state. Hawaii is number one, theirs is 80.7 years, and Mississippi is number 50 at 71.9 years. Results from Alaska's first ranked choice election are finally in.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Democrat Mary Paltola will finish the late Don Young's term as Alaska's sole House representative. Paltola, who will be the first Alaskan native in Congress, stopped Sarah Palin's comeback effort, but she'll face her again this November. Despite not starting a game since joining the team in March, Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has already earned himself a five-year extension worth $245 million with the team. He must tell really good jokes at team meetings. Wilson will start against Seattle, his previous team, to kick off the Broncos' regular season on Monday the 12th. Sound the Horn of Gondor, the first two episodes of Amazon Prime's
Starting point is 00:06:06 The Lord of the Rings, The Rings of Power, were released last night.
