Let's get started with some espresso shots. Just when you thought you could stop saying unprecedented, Ian made landfall as a high-end Category 4 hurricane near Cayo Costa on Wednesday afternoon. With 150 mph winds, it's tied as the fifth strongest hurricane to ever hit the U.S. The storm surge hit 12 feet in some places, washing away cars and trapping people inside. Over 2.6 million people lost power, but 30,000 line workers are on the job to get them up and running, and parts of Florida received 19 inches of rain. It's too early for reliable damage assessments and death tolls, but President Biden warned that Ian may be, quote,

the deadliest hurricane in Florida's history, and Governor DeSantis called the flood damage, quote, historic. Ian weakened to a tropical storm while traveling across Florida, but re-strengthened into a hurricane over the Atlantic and is expected to hit South Carolina later today. It's easy to feel helpless, but here are two things you can do. First, pray for the families and first responders to have strength and hope. And second, you can give. The Nord Stream pipelines, which carry natural gas from Russia to Germany, sprung four leaks in the last few days. And yes, the consensus is that is three more than a random accident can explain. Officials are calling it, quote, a deliberate act. The sophistication required to explode the underwater pipes, paired with the strategic location of the leaks,

they're just inside international water so as to avoid any country's direct retaliation, have world leaders believing this was carried out by a government, not some private pipeline-hating organization? Some European leaders are pointing fingers at Russia, but the Kremlin says they suspect either the U.S. or Ukraine, calling the allegations that they attacked their own pipeline quote, predictably stupid. Neither pipeline was active, so the leaks don't exacerbate Europe's energy crisis, but they do have governments upping security on other key infrastructures. After a few days of UK market chaos following the release of the new Prime Minister Liz Truss's economic plan, the Bank of England pledged to buy government bonds, quote, on whatever scale is necessary. It seems to have worked. Interest rates have stabilized and the British pound, which had been crashing, reversed course. Investors remain concerned about the amount of debt the government will need to accomplish Truss's plan. It includes huge spending, much of which is focused on helping make energy affordable, while also cutting taxes. In a rare move, the International Monetary Fund urged Truss to reverse course, but she said no. The S&P 500 responded positively to the Bank of England on Wednesday. It went up

1.9%, but returned to its 2022 sell-off yesterday with a decrease of 2.1%.
