Starting point is 00:00:33 St. Augustine. Let's get started with some espresso shots. The Caribbean is assessing the devastation wrought by Hurricane Melissa. In Jamaica, about 77% of the island is without power, and a, quote, total communication blackout in some areas has made damage assessment difficult. At least four people have died and over 25,000 have been displaced. In Haiti, at least 24 people have died and 18 more are missing amid flash flooding. And in Cuba, flooded rivers cut off 140,000 people from road access.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Yesterday, Melissa swept through the Bahamas and Bermuda as a category one, causing minimal damage before heading out to sea to dissipate. The Northeast U.S. could see heavy rain in Melissa's wake. Now, relief efforts are underway. Wednesday, the U.S. State Department deployed emergency response teams to affected areas to, quote, determine what assistance is needed. In the wake of devastation in the Caribbean, followers of Christ had the opportunity to respond in love. The two struck a trade deal after a nearly two-hour meeting in South Korea. The U.S. will cut tariffs on Chinese imports to 47.
Starting point is 00:02:51 down from its peak of 145%. In exchange, China will resume purchasing American soybeans, pause export limits on rare earth minerals, restrictions that threaten supply chains of fighter jets and phones, and cooperate on stopping the flow of fentanyl precursor chemicals into the U.S. Trump said the, quote, truly great meeting was a 12 out of 10. She said the two countries, quote, can still find ways to thrive side by side, despite normal friction.
Starting point is 00:03:27 After the meeting, Treasury Secretary Bessent said the U.S. got Chinese approval for TikTok's sale to a group of mostly American investors. Wall Street's serving up another round of record-breaking earnings. NVIDIA just became the first company ever to hit a $5 trillion market cap fueled by ever-surging demand for its AI processing chips. The company hit $4 trillion only three months ago and $3 trillion last year. Other corporate heavyweights are also cashing in.
Starting point is 00:04:27 Google's parent company, Alphabet, crossed the $100 billion revenue mark in a quarter for the first time, thanks to add growth and a 34% jump in its cloud division. And Starbucks brewed up its first same-store sales growth in nearly two years, up about 1%. But not everyone is counting stacks. Amazon's preparing cuts of up to 30,000 corporate jobs, UPS has axed 48,000 this year, and many other companies, including Target and Paramount Skydance, have announced large-scale layoffs. In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates. President Trump is reviving nuclear weapons testing. Minutes before yesterday's meeting with Chinese President Xi,
Starting point is 00:06:52 he directed the U.S. military to immediately resume testing nuclear weapons after a 33-year pause. The surprise announcement made aboard Marine One noted that the Pentagon would test the U.S. nuclear arsenal on a, quote, equal basis with other nuclear powers. A former Illinois sheriff's deputy has been convicted of second-degree murder and the death of Sonia Massey. The former officer, a 31-year-old white man, fatally shot Massey, a black woman suffering for mental illness and holding a pot of hot water. Last June, while responding to a distress call at her Springfield, Illinois home.
Starting point is 00:07:35 The Fed whipped out its shears again. The central bank cut interest rates by a quarter point on Wednesday, its second straight reduction as job growth continues to slow. Rates dropped below the 4% mark for the first time since 2022, but Chair Jerome Powell cast doubt on whether another cut would be coming in December. French police have arrested five more Louvreheist suspects. One of the detainees was allegedly among the four thieves who nabbed Francis Crown Jules during the daylight heist.
Starting point is 00:08:10 The other four played an unknown role. The prosecutor warned that the gems of, quote, incalculable worth are, quote, unsellable and urged thieves to return them. A team of 100 investigators remains on the case. Protests erupted in Brazil Wednesday after a police raid on a drug gang left at least 121 dead in Rio de Janeiro. Bereaved families condemned executions by the police, while the government celebrated a successful officer,
Starting point is 00:08:42 against a massive crime organization. Meanwhile, in Sudan, paramilitary forces, fighting for power since 2023, killed hundreds after seizing the Sudanese army's last stronghold in Darfur. That's all we have for today.
