Starting point is 00:00:00 Today's episode is brought to you by our lead sponsor, Crew. Today we're talking about the narrowing of the field of presidential candidates, the retirement of some prominent coaches, Israel on trial, and other top news for Friday, January 12th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over today. Here's the quote of the day. If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world. C.S. Lewis. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:47 The field of candidates vying for the GOP's presidential nomination narrowed on Wednesday. Chris Christie said he no longer saw a path to winning the nomination, ending his campaign to beat out former President Trump, of whom he's been vocally critical. The former New Jersey governor bowed out without endorsing another candidate, saying he doesn't think his competitors are challenging Trump enough. As Christie threw in the towel, Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley stepped into the ring. In the final Republican debate before the Iowa caucus next week, the two candidates duking it out for second place, pulling behind Trump, met on stage to discuss, with raised voices and pointed fingers, each other's views on issues like immigration, taxes, Israel, and Social Security. The roster for GOP primary ballots now includes Trump, Haley, DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Asa Hutchinson.
Starting point is 00:01:49 Politicians come and go, often disappointing supporters and opponents alike. Put your hope in the Lord, who has no term limit, who rules with compassion, and who executes justice perfectly. Psalm 9, 7-10 says, But the Lord sits enthroned forever. He has established his throne for judgment, and he judges the world with righteousness. He executes judgment on the nations with fairness. The Lord is a refuge for the persecuted, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, because you have not abandoned those who seek you, Lord. Accusations are flying at the UN's International Court of Justice. Yesterday, lawyers from South Africa accused Israel of genocide, saying that from the highest
Starting point is 00:02:38 level of state, Israel's actions are intended to bring about the destruction of the Palestinian people. Israel is expected to argue for its right to self-defense today. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said, Israel is fighting Hamas terrorists, not the Palestinian population, and we are doing so in full compliance with international law. Washington and other Western countries agree that genocide accusations are unjustified. Preliminary hearings this week will consider calling for a ceasefire until the investigation concludes, but a final verdict is likely to take years. Whether Israel would heed calls for a ceasefire from the U.N. is another open question.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Russia ignored the court in 2022. Russia ignored the court in 2022. Imitating our just and merciful Father, Christians should seek justice while showing love for all parties, both victims and Social Order, says, Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease, that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace, your Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Peace, your Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Three legendary coaches made big announcements this week.
Starting point is 00:04:16 First, the Seattle Seahawks announced that head coach Pete Carroll would be moving into an advisory role with the team, a mutually agreed-upon decision. After 14 years, 10 playoff appearances, Seattle's only Super Bowl win, and over 3,600 pieces of bubble yum. Then, Alabama head coach Nick Saban told his team he'd be retiring. Saban said he knew it was time, citing his age. The Little Debbie-loving, seven-time national champion coached the Crimson Tide for 17 years and said he'll stick around to help with the team's transition. Finally, Bill Belichick announced he won't be in his cut-off Patriots hoodie this year.
Starting point is 00:04:55 After six Super Bowl rings and 24 seasons with New England, Belichick and the team mutually parted ways. He's expected to garner interest from other teams. Here's a verse to remember when your favorite coach isn't coming back because the head coach hasn't changed and never will. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13 verse 8. With over 1,000 translations and every type of decorative edition, it's easy to forget how many people can't even get their hands on a single copy of the Bible in their native language. This is why we've partnered with Crew. Crew has
Starting point is 00:05:41 missionaries in almost every country, but they need more Bibles. One missionary said, I have never seen such a thirst for the Word of God in my country. Starting point is 00:06:40 In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates. Former President Trump's New York civil trial ended yesterday. The conclusion to the 44-day trial concerning allegations of exaggerated financial records started with a bomb threat at the judge's house and included a statement by Trump, despite judge's orders. A decision is expected by the end of the month. And next week, Trump will reportedly attend his second E. Jean Carroll defamation trial. Yemen's Houthi rebels launched their largest attack yet on U.S. and U.K. ships in the Red Sea Tuesday. All 21 drones and missiles were shot down before they caused damage. The next day, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding an end to the attacks,
Starting point is 00:07:30 and the US and UK have hinted at military action. Next up for ChatGPT? A storefront. Kind of. OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, announced the launch of their new GPT Store, an app store-like marketplace for personalized AI, where companies can publish custom versions of ChatGPT for premium users to enjoy. It's like making an app, but using ChatGPT instead of coding skills. Companies already participating include AllTrails, Canva, and CodeTutor. A resolution to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress is headed to the House for a full vote. The Republican-led Oversight and Judiciary Committees voted Wednesday night to recommend
Starting point is 00:08:22 contempt charges after Hunter refused closed-door questioning related to the impeachment inquiry, but made a surprise appearance at the hearings. The younger Biden has argued for public testimony. The SEC has relented to the crypto community, officially approving a Bitcoin ETF. The move allows mainstream investors to own Bitcoin without actually owning any Bitcoin. Instead, they invest in the Bitcoin ETF, which in turn buys and holds Bitcoin directly.
Starting point is 00:08:56 The ETF is expected to generally track the value of Bitcoin, currently valued at $46,300. And that's all we have for today. Thanks so much for listening.
