Today we're talking about the stock market's Bad Friday. We'll cover a surprise trip by U.S. officials to Kiev, political drama in D.C., and other top news for Monday, April 24th. The Dow Jones fell almost 1,000 points while the S&P dipped almost 3%, marking the biggest single-day loss for the

indexes since 2020. If you're looking to point fingers, point them at companies reporting disappointing quarterly earnings and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Verizon shares dropped 5.6% after reporting that it lost subscribers, and multiple healthcare companies reported poor 2022 outlooks. HCA Healthcare led that pack, its stock dropped 21.8%. Meanwhile, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell reiterated aggressive interest rate hikes to combat inflation are coming soon, suggesting that rates could hit 2.75% to 3.25%, up from effectively 0% by year's end. Fearful of taking a bath, many investors simply left the stock market. $17.5 billion flowed out of equities into bonds and cash. Too often, we let eternally insignificant things, like the ups and downs of the market, control our mood and behavior.

Seeking to steward money well is a good thing, but our hope is in Christ, not a good ROI. Proverbs 23, 4 and 5 says, Don't wear yourself out to get rich because you know better. Stop. As soon as your eyes fly to it, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself and flies like an eagle to the sky. President Zelensky had special Easter basket requests this year. Yesterday, Zelensky spent Eastern Orthodox Easter, which is typically a day of celebration in Ukraine, meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Blinken and Secretary of Defense Austin. The Ukrainian president said he expected, quote, not just presents or some kind of cakes, but specific

weapons rather than empty handed U.S. officials. Prior to the meeting, President Biden announced another $800 million security package and $500 million in economic assistance to Ukraine. A visit from U.S. officials wasn't the only surprise. The U.K. announced they are reopening their embassy in Kyiv. This comes as Russian forces have mostly located from Kyiv to eastern Ukraine. Mariupol, however, remains under fire. Saturday, Russian troops struck the Avistal steel plant, where thousands of Ukrainians remain underground.

Here's a verse to consider when reading about Ukraine. First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 1 Timothy 2, 1 and 2. Recorded calls in January 6th are grabbing headlines again. On Thursday, the New York Times reported that shortly after January 6th, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said that he had, quote, had it with then-President Trump, and he would recommend the president resign. McCarthy, who was a frontrunner to become Speaker of the House, partly because of Trump's support, called the New York Times reporting, quote, totally false and wrong. Then audio of the

call was leaked, confirming the claims were true. Democrats say this shows McCarthy believed Trump was to blame for January 6th, but changed tunes for political reasons. Republicans, including former President Trump, are essentially saying that while they don't like them, McCarthy's comments are, quote, water under the bridge and won't hurt him politically. What is important to a political party is not necessarily important to the kingdom of God. Stay focused on Christ and kingdom goals and remember, compared to spending eternity with God, most things don't matter. Colossians 3, 2 through 4 says, set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. For you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also

Orrin Hatch, the longest-serving Republican in state history, passed away over the weekend. Philadelphians can un-remask. Citing, quote, decreasing hospitalizations and a leveling of case counts, Philadelphia's Board of Health voted to end the city's indoor mask mandate just four days after it was reinstated. Meanwhile, Shanghai is doubling down on its zero COVID policy, physically sealing the entrances to some apartments where cases were found. The U.S. Air Force announced a two-star general was convicted of abusive sexual contact by a military court for forcibly kissing an Air Force civilian employee who was also his sister-in-law. He is the highest-ranking officer in Air Force history to be court-martialed and convicted, and he faces up to seven years in prison at a sentencing hearing today.

After three years of scheduled maintenance, everyone's favorite particle accelerator is back up and running. The Large Hadron Collider, a 20-mile-long tunnel buried under the Alps, uses magnets to smash particles together at almost the speed of light. Scientists hope new testing may reveal a fifth force of nature.
