Let's get started with some espresso shots. It's a bird. It's a plane. It's a Chinese spy balloon. The moon-like orb entered U.S. airspace on January 28th. Last Wednesday, February 1st, President Biden ordered military leaders to shoot it down as soon as possible, but they advised waiting until it floated over water to prevent falling debris. On Saturday, an F-22 shot it down off the South Carolina coast. Prior to bursting China's first balloon, the Pentagon announced another balloon over Latin America. U.S. officials said intelligence suggests the balloons wouldn't provide much more detailed surveillance than existing satellites. Secretary of State Blinken postponed traveling to China in the wake of the incident. China says it was only a weather balloon and called the U.S. response an obvious overreaction, threatening repercussions.

Here's a verse to consider when wondering if there really are 99 spy left balloons, like the 1980s hit suggests. Sharpen your pencils, the poor over-government class class is in session and credits do not transfer. For 40-ish years, Iowa and New Hampshire have kicked off the primary election season. However, the Democratic National Committee voted to shake things up Saturday, tapping South Carolina to host first in the nation voting, followed by New Hampshire, Nevada, Georgia, and Michigan.

The states that vote first significantly impact party nominations, because back-of-the-pack candidates often drop out after visiting the first five election states. Democrats believe these new states, like South Carolina, which turned the tide toward Biden in 2020, better reflect the party's diversity. But don't print new calendars yet. New Hampshire's state law says it has to hold the first primary, and states with Republican-controlled governments, including Iowa, New Hampshire, and Georgia, are likely to oppose rescheduling. The DNC will reevaluate in early June.

While the Bible does not include instructions on when to schedule primary elections, it specifically leaves directions to pray for those in authority, whichever party they belong to. 1 Timothy, chapter 2, verses 1-2 say, First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. quiet life in all godliness and dignity. Big tech may be dominating headlines about layoffs, but it appears everyone else is hiring. On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced the U.S. added 517,000 jobs in January. That's triple what economists expected and the biggest monthly gain since July 2022. The leisure and hospitality sector issued the most new name tags, 128,000, followed

by professional and business services, 82,000. Unemployment dropped to 3.4%, the lowest it's been since we landed on the moon in 1969. It's good news that even your Econ 101 professor can't explain. The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates eight times in the last year, which should lower inflation but increase unemployment. And yet, unemployment has continued to fall. Regardless of whether the broader economy is struggling or thriving, Christians should seek to give generously of our time, talents, and resources to those in greater need.
