Starting point is 00:00:00 Fears of Russia invading Ukraine aren't going away, the stock market is having a rough 2022, two top QBs are done for the season and maybe forever, and other top news for Monday, January 24th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Thanks for joining us. Here's the quote of the day. The world says love yourself, grab all you can, follow your heart. Jesus says deny yourself, grab your cross, and follow me. Francis Chan. Let's get started with some espresso shots. Ukraine and Russia's relationship status just went from it's complicated to it's common core math complicated. British intelligence officials say they believe Russia is angling to have a pro-Russian leader installed in Ukraine. The U.S. also feels tensions rising. The White House says Russia
Starting point is 00:00:54 could launch an attack at any point. The State Department ordered families of U.S. embassy personnel to evacuate the country. Russia maintains that nothing is going on, and yet they announced naval exercises in the Black Sea, and they've moved troops into Belarus, which borders Ukraine. Secretary of State Blinken met with his Russian counterpart with no major breakthroughs, but this weekend the U.S. sent a just-in-case aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean and partnered with NATO to send in aid packages, including lethal weapons, to Ukraine. Mel Gibson probably not included.
Starting point is 00:01:26 It's easy to feel helpless in a situation like this, but the Bible promises that prayer is powerful and effective, that it causes things to happen that would not have happened otherwise. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect. James 5.16. F16. Last second field goals toppled the number one seeded Tennessee Titans, the number one seeded Green Bay Packers, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend. This means the NFL Conference Championships are set, and they won't include Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady. It was a turbulent season for Aaron Rodgers, who publicly feuded with team management, briefly starred in the nation's vaccine debate, he's unvaccinated but told press he was immunized, and performs so
Starting point is 00:02:10 brilliantly on the field that he's favored to win league MVP for the fourth time. When asked about the next season, Rodgers said nothing is off the table, including returning to the pack, requesting a trade, or retiring. Brady, who is 44 years old and has seven Super Bowl rings, has been similarly noncommittal when asked about his plans. Averse to consider when deciding whether or not to pursue an eighth Super Bowl ring, or, you know, some more relatable career move, without guidance, a people will fall, but with many counselors, there is deliverance. Proverbs 11.14. is deliverance. Proverbs 11.14. The stock market had its worst week since Corona was just a beach beer. Broadly speaking, the doom and gloom can be attributed to a Federal Reserve meeting scheduled this week where they're expected to announce plans to aggressively raise interest rates.
Starting point is 00:02:59 This should help combat inflation, but will also generally slow economic growth. However, some stocks did poorly all on their own. Netflix stock dropped 20% after reporting a disappointing number of new subscribers. And the stationary wheels fell off Peloton on news that sales have been slowed so much they've halted production. Stock dropped 23.9%. And it wasn't just the stock market. People are calling January 21st Black Friday after crypto markets lost a total of $136 billion in a single day. While there's nothing inherently wrong with owning cryptocurrency,
Starting point is 00:03:35 we should be wary of the often obsessive tendencies its volatility brings out in people. Seek to steward your money well over the long term, not bet on a big windfall. Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever earns it little by little will increase it. Proverbs 13.11 This episode is sponsored by His Productions. Omicron may have a midlife crisis after realizing how quickly it peaked. The U.S. is still averaging a massive 710,000 daily cases, but that's down from 807,000 last week, and states that were hit with Omicron early are seeing steep declines. New York is reporting one-third the cases it was just 14 days ago.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Four police officers were shot in New York City last week, including two on Friday night. One was killed and the other critically wounded. Mayor Eric Adams, a former police chief, said these events were an attack on the city of New York before calling for both increased police funding and better gun control. FBI agents raided the home and campaign office of Texas Democrat Representative Henry Quaylar as a part of a federal investigation into Azerbaijan and U.S. businessmen. Quaylar, who says he will fully cooperate with the investigation, has reportedly taken multiple sponsored trips to Azerbaijan.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Hundreds of residents have been evacuated from California's coast as wildfires burn from a canyon near Big Sur, shutting down part of the state's historic Pacific Coast Highway. The blaze, known as the Colorado Fire, has burned through 1,050 acres and was 25% contained as of yesterday. Since 2016, hundreds of U.S. diplomats stationed abroad have experienced sudden headaches, nausea, vision loss, and other unexplained symptoms, referred to as Havana Syndrome. An interim assessment by the CIA doesn't provide a cause, but says it's unlikely to be a coordinated attack, quote, by Russia or another foreign power, unquote. And that is it for today.
