Starting point is 00:00:00 Today, we're talking about the protests over the death of Tyree Nichols, a bizarre double murder case, reports of fraud by the Adani Group, and other top news for Monday, January 30th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day, just pray for a tough hide and a tender heart, Ruth Graham. Let's get started with some espresso shots. Friday evening, Memphis authorities released Tyree Nichols' arrest footage. The video revealed that police pulled Nichols from his car and pepper sprayed him before Nichols ran and was pursued
Starting point is 00:00:38 on foot. It then shows officers punching, kicking, and using batons as Nichols cried out for his mother and paramedics waiting 16 minutes before tending to him. The release prompted protests across the country that were, as Tyree's mother requested, largely peaceful. Memphis police announced that the special scorpion unit connected to the fired officers has been disbanded. Nichols' family said they were very satisfied with the department's quick response but want to see more systematic change. Memphis-area state legislators intend to file police reform bills this week, and the five officers charged in Nichols' death will appear in court on February 17th.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Most of us can't make an immediate impact on what's happening in Memphis, but we can pray. Pray for the family of Tyree Nichols. Pray for the churches in Memphis to be a light to their community. Pray for the family of Tyree Nichols. Pray for the churches in Memphis to be a light to their community. Pray for justice to be served. James chapter 5 verse 16b says, the prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect. Part of a bizarre crime saga, Alec Murdoch's double murder trial began last week. Murdoch hails from a prominent South Carolina family complete with three generations of elected prosecutors and a respected family-owned law firm. All that prestige crumbled when he was
Starting point is 00:01:54 charged with stealing clients' money and tax evasion, among other fraud charges. Then, in June 2021, his wife and youngest son were found dead. Three months later, he was shot too, sustaining a superficial head wound. Prosecutors allege that, facing dozens of financial crimes, Murdoch murdered his wife and son to gain sympathy from the courts and then tried to arrange his own murder, so his surviving son could collect a $10 million life insurance payment. Murdoch says grief and opioids drove him to the botched hitman hire but denies killing his wife and son. Now, a jury will decide. We live in a world marred by sin, death, and confusion. Even while we work to promote justice and redemption here on earth, we can rest in the knowledge that a day is coming where sin will be impossible and regret a distant memory.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Revelation chapter 21 verse 4 says, He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more. Grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. India's Gautam Adani had a very bad week, dropping from the world's third richest man to its seventh richest. He's now worth a measly $96 billion. Adani's company, the Adani Group, lost more than $51 billion in value after being accused of running a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme. In a 100-page report by Hindenburg Research, a U.S. investment firm that specializes in short selling, also known as betting against a stock. The Adani Group has denied the allegations and says it's considering
Starting point is 00:03:30 legal action against Hindenburg. The report came ahead of Adani's planned share sale, which is now seeing little demand. Shares plummeted nearly 20%, triggering automatic halts in trading in Mumbai. And the news set India's benchmark Nifty 50 stock index down more than 1% on Friday.
