Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about a new three-digit phone number, the story behind the January 6th committee's latest subpoena, heatwaves around the world, and other top news for Monday, July 18th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the verse of the week. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10.13 Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Memorizing phone numbers has gone out of style, but we've got one for you, 988. It's active as of Saturday, and it's being billed as the 911 for mental health emergencies. You can call or text the number 24-7 to be connected to a trained mental health counselor. The program has gotten some serious funding recently, but many fear the rollout will still be bumpy. 988 is a replacement for the 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Hotline, which was famously under-resourced. Last year, nearly one in five callers hung up while waiting to be connected, and traffic
Starting point is 00:01:04 is expected to surge with the new number. Long-term, officials envision mental health urgent care centers and on-the-ground response teams to reduce the burden on police in mental health crisis situations, all with 988 as the backbone. We've partnered with Faithful Counseling, which matches people to licensed Christian therapists who specialize in everything from stress and anxiety to trauma and grief. You can visit faithfulcounseling.com slash TPO to get 10% off your first month, or just click our link in the show notes. Psalm 34, 17 and 18 says, The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears and rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is near the brokenhearted. He saves those crushed in spirit. As the Secret Service and any teenager can attest, even deleted texts can cause trouble. The DHS watchdog notified the January 6th committee that some Secret Service
Starting point is 00:01:55 phone data sent around the time of the Capitol attack had been erased as part of a pre-planned quote device replacement program. The committee swishly subpoenaed the reportedly missing information, which may or may not be recoverable. The Secret Service maintains that it's been fully cooperative and will remain so and says any insinuation of quote, malicious activity in deleting the texts is false. But the possibility of lost evidence has some, including Senator Rob Portman from Ohio, declaring they're quote, deeply concerned and the recovered data could shed light on former President Trump's role in the attack. You can catch the next and potentially final episode of The Hearing's primetime on Thursday. The confidence that our eternity is secure,
Starting point is 00:02:34 regardless of what happens, should color our every interaction. It allows us to be loving when others are hateful, kind when others are angry, and feel peace when others are fearful. Galatians 5, 22 and 23 says, but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. It's getting hot everywhere. England is expected to switch to iced tea as temperatures reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit this week, two degrees higher than 2019's previous record, prompting the country's first ever red weather warning. Advice on coping with temps ranges from the helpful, like keep the shades drawn, to the less helpful, put a bag of frozen peas under your shirt. From France to Turkey, dry weather and scorching
Starting point is 00:03:19 temperatures, we're talking 114 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas, sparked wildfires over the last week, causing the evacuation of thousands. The blazing weather also poses health concerns, and over 650 people died from heat stroke in Portugal in the last week. In the central U.S., triple-digit forecasts for this week have officials encouraging people to stay hydrated and out of the sun. Here's a verse to consider when stuck indoors playing board games and fanning yourself. Therefore, through him, let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise,
Starting point is 00:03:48 that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Don't neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices. Hebrews 13, 15, and 16. Mexican forces captured drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero on Friday, ending his four years on the FBI's most wanted list for the 1985 killing of a USDA agent. Following the capture, a Mexican naval helicopter surrounding the operation crashed, killing 14 of the 15 passengers. In the fist bump heard around the world, President Biden's greeting of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sparked outrage since U.S. intel claims that MBS approved the assassination of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Biden says he did confront MBS about the murder, but Saudi Arabia's foreign minister denies it. A 10-year-old rape victim from Ohio who traveled to Indiana to receive an abortion
Starting point is 00:05:22 has become a central flashpoint in the national abortion debate. The story has sparked arguments between politicians and activist groups over the morality and facts of the story. A 27-year-old man was charged with the rape last week. The 150th British Open was so thrilling that some spectators regular clapped. Australia's Cameron Smith sunk five straight birdies, helping him overcome Rory McIlroy and win his first major tournament. The players split a $14 million purse, and Smith and his magic putter received $2.5 million. Senator Manchin from West Virginia chilled Dems' efforts on climate change legislation, and the reaction has been more than a little angry. Manchin says he's on board with lowering health care premiums and prescription drug costs,
Starting point is 00:06:05 but he cites inflation as the reason he won't sign off on additional climate spending, for now at least. And now the pour-over's pick of the week, the End of the Road podcast. Imagine your longest day of travel, then keep going.
