Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we'll be talking about the newest federal holiday, a FIFA World Cup first, a high-profile extradition order, and other top news for Monday, June 20th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the verse of the day. Let love be genuine, abhor what is evil, hold fast to what is good. Romans 12 9. Let's get started with some espresso shots. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:31 You likely saw two calendar notifications pop up yesterday, Juneteenth and Father's Day. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed the last enslaved African Americans that federal law had granted them freedom. Black communities have held celebrations on June 19th for over 150 years, but Juneteenth became a U.S. federal holiday last year. Celebrations across the country, like the Juneteenth Music and Arts Festival, attracted in-person merrymakers, and about 30% of companies are offering today off work. The country also gave a collective shout-out to fathers yesterday. Shout-outs and $20 billion. That's the amount spent on meals, ties, roughly 100 million are sold each Father's Day, and we suspect a fair number of axes, power tools, and beard oil.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Here's a verse to consider when holidays like Father's Day feel complicated or bittersweet. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 1 Peter 1, 3, and 4. It's official, the 2026 World Cup is being held in North America. In a World Cup first, three countries will participate in hosting games. North America. In a World Cup first, three countries will participate in hosting games. Soccer matches will be hosted in 11 U.S. cities and two Canadian cities, and Mexico will host football matches in three cities. The 2026 tournament will be the first to expand to 48
Starting point is 00:01:54 teams, and most games will be played in slightly reconfigured NFL stadiums. Apple is already lacing up its cleats. Cupertino's Fruit Company signed a $2.5 billion deal to make sure every MLS game streams on Apple TV Plus for the next 10 years. In sports that only have one name news, the Golden State Warriors beat the Boston Celtics to win their fourth NBA championship in eight years. And Steph Curry finally won an honor that had eluded him for years, finals MVP. Here's a verse to consider when inviting your upstairs and downstairs neighbors over to watch the game, or match. And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together as some are in the habit of doing,
Starting point is 00:02:34 but encouraging each other and all the more as you see the day approaching. Hebrews 10, 24, and 25. The British government ordered WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange be extradited to the United States, but appeals mean that a final ruling in the already decade-long saga may still be years away. Assange faces 17 charges brought by the U.S. government under the Espionage Act for helping steal and publish 400,000 classified military documents back in 2010. The data dump exposed that the U.S. military had not disclosed civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan and ignored torture committed by allied Iraqi forces. Supporters say Assange is a journalist who should not be punished for revealing uncomfortable
Starting point is 00:03:16 truths, while detractors say mass uploading raw classified documents is not journalism, it's just illegal. Assange lived in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for nearly seven years to avoid arrest, but his asylum was revoked in 2019, and he's been in prison mounting legal appeals since. Being peaceable, gentle, and open to reason in the face of culturally hot topics is a sign of God's wisdom in us. James 3.17 says, but the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without pretense. James 3.17. We think the pour-over is like a friend's hot spot or Chick-fil-A ice. It's available free, but also worth paying for. TPO started as a grad school side project and made $0 for years, and so if

This summer has been dubbed quote crypto winter and it's a cold one. Bitcoin dropped below $18,000 on Saturday. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum, the world's
Starting point is 00:04:45 most popular cryptocurrencies, are down more than 35% in the past week. Causes for the chill include, big surprise, rising inflation and increased interest rates. The FDA and CDC gave the thumbs up to both Moderna and Pfizer's COVID vaccines for kiddos, meaning all children ages 6 to 217 months, that's 18 years if you're bad at math, are now eligible to receive a vaccine from either company. Border crossing arrests hit record highs in May. Customs and Border Patrol, CBP, made 222,656 arrests during May alone. That's a 10% increase from April. Of those arrested, 69% were single adults and about 25% were repeat offenders.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Illegal border crossings have been at record highs for almost two years. The nation's largest labor organization, AFL-CIO, elected its first female president, Liz Shuler, who promised one million new union members over 10 years. To kick things off, unionization took its first bite out of Apple when an iStore in Maryland voted to unionize over the weekend. Buzz Lightyear still can't fly, but gliding with style is better than belly flopping. Pixar's Lightyear brought in $51 million its opening weekend, strong for a pandemic release, but short of analyst expectations and well below previous Toy Story franchise debuts. For reference, Toy Story 4 debuts. For reference,
Starting point is 00:06:05 Toy Story 4 brought in $120 million. And now the pour-over's pick of the week, a recommendation of something someone on the TPO team uses and loves. This week, it's Super Coffee. A few years ago, Nate, who handles TPO's financial stuff, had his first kid and was looking for some quick and easy caffeine, but didn't want the 52 grams of sugar in a Frappuccino. Eventually, he found Super Coffee. It's got zero grams of sugar, a good start, 10 grams of protein, a nice bonus, zero artificial sweeteners, awesome, and 200 milligrams of caffeine. Good morning. Then the final test, yes, it tasted amazing. You can see for yourself, follow the link in our show notes to get a free trial pack of their best-selling flavors.
