Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about President Zelensky's Zoom meeting with Congress, how gas prices are approaching record highs, a significant sporting retirement, and other top news for Monday, March 7th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Psalm 4.8 says, In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. 2022 started 62 days ago, so there's a chance we're about 58 days behind in our Bible a year plan. Maybe the answer isn't to push through Genesis, but to dig into it.
Starting point is 00:00:33 This free course from Hillsdale College aims to deepen your understanding of the Old Testament by revealing the literary beauty and complexity of the text. The course dives into the four relationships that dominate Genesis, God and creation, God and man, man and man, and man and creation. There's no better place to start than the beginning, and there's no better price than free. You can enroll in Hillsdale College's free online course on Genesis today, and you can find a link in the show notes. Let's get started with some espresso shots. On Saturday, Ukrainian President Zelensky zoomed with Congress. After the call, U.S. lawmakers appear prepared to approve $10 billion in aid, but fear Zelensky's requested no-fly zone over Ukraine would be viewed by Putin as an act of war. This could spark World War III,
Starting point is 00:01:18 something they really, really want to avoid. When it comes to conditions on the ground in Ukraine, the fire is out and no radiation leaked at Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which was seized by Russian troops in a dangerous battle. Ukraine accused Russia of breaking a humanitarian ceasefire meant to allow civilian evacuations from the city of Mariupol, and the UN estimates over 1.5 million people have fled Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia has blocked Facebook, Twitter, BBC, and other news sources and made spreading non-Putin-approved views on the invasion punishable with 15 years in prison. The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this world, but it does give us hope, strength, and peace during life's most difficult seasons.

Psalm 18.2 says, The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. For anyone who prefers bikes, rollerblades, or Teslas, now is your time. Gas prices are surging. Prices at the pumps had their largest overnight jump since Hurricane Katrina on Friday, and they're expected to surpass the nation's all-time high of $4.11 a gallon, which was set back in 2008, as the U.S. looks to expand Russian sanctions. The Biden administration has previously dismissed the
Starting point is 00:02:40 idea of sanctioning Russian energy, saying it is against the country's, quote, strategic interests to push domestic gas prices even higher, but it's now considering energy sanctions in coordination with European partners. A bipartisan bill to ban U.S. imports of Russian oil was proposed by Senators Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, and Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, and that's gaining steam. It now has 20 co-sponsors and the support of Ukrainian President Zelensky. Rising prices will not impact everyone equally. If you're in a position of financial security, model the love of Christ by giving to those in need through your local church. Galatians 6, 9, and 10 says, let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don't give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith. In sports, Duke
Starting point is 00:03:33 University's legendary coach Krzyzewski, affectionately known as Coach K, wrapped up 42 years of coaching on Saturday. His career included 15 ACC championships, 5 NCAA championships, and 3 Team USA gold medals. And it ended with a loss. His final record is 1-170-361, a remarkable 76% win rate after his fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils were upset at home by unranked in-state rival UNC. 96 of Coach K's former players attended his last game, and tickets to witness the milestone fetched Super Bowl-level prices. The average price on StubHub was over $5,000.
Starting point is 00:04:09 College basketball is wrapping up its regular season and heading into conference tournaments as the march toward madness begins. On Saturday, Murray State became the first team to punch its ticket to the tournament, and the full bracket will be announced next Sunday. Ecclesiastes 3, 1, and 2 says, There is an occasion for everything and a time for every activity under heaven, a time to give birth and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot. Sounds like a great verse to consider when deciding to end a successful

Starting point is 00:05:16 In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates. New York City joined the states of California, Oregon, and Washington, as well as major Texas school districts, and dropped their mask mandates for students. COVID cases continue to drop nationwide, and the United States is now averaging fewer than 50,000 cases a day. This represents a 94% drop in the last seven weeks. Tornadoes swept through Iowa on Saturday, and they damaged homes and barns and killed at least seven people, including two children. Madison County, which is just south of the state capital of Des Moines, was hit the hardest. It just got that much harder to buy things in Russia as Visa, MasterCard, and Amex have all suspended operations in the country. Visa said cards issued in Russia won't work anywhere, and cards issued outside of Russia will no longer work within the country.
Starting point is 00:06:10 On Friday, the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The 28-year-old was convicted of killing three people and injuring hundreds more when he detonated homemade bombs at the 2013 Boston Marathon finish line with his brother. It's unclear when Tsarnaev will be executed, as all federal executions are currently halted. The U.S. economy was proud to bring its February report card home. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics announced a better than expected 678,000 new jobs that were added last month. This was the most since July 2021, and the unemployment rate dropped to 3.8%, which is a two-year low. That's all we have for today. Thanks so much for listening.
