Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about a huge surprise in sports, Russia's Victory Day plans, disasters in the Caribbean, and other top news for Monday, May 9th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day. He who labors as he prays lifts his heart to God with his hands. Saint Benedict of Nursia. Let's get started with some espresso shots. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Rich Strike came out of literally nowhere Saturday evening to win the 148th Kentucky Derby. In an incredible underdog, or underhorse, story, Rich Strike entered the derby the day before the race, just 30 seconds before the deadline. His win, in which he overtook 16 other horses with 80-1 odds, is the second biggest upset in Kentucky Derby history, and his story is both just getting started and already full of perseverance. He'll compete in the other two legs of the Triple Crown over the next month, looking to leave more long faces among his competition. Further south, full-sized Hot Wheels cruised into Miami for the city's first Formula One race. The sport is surging in popularity thanks to Netflix's Drive to Survive docuseries and is
Starting point is 00:01:05 adding another U.S. pit stop on the Vegas Strip next year. Too often we let eternally insignificant things like sports control our mood and behavior. It's not wrong to enjoy these things, but remember that whether your horse wins or loses, nothing of true importance has changed. Colossians 3, 2 through 4 says, set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. For you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Today is Victory Day, a celebration of the Soviet Union's World War II defeat of Germany 77 years ago. But President Putin appears eager to commemorate something a little less dusty, Russia seizing Mariupol, or at least asserting it has. All women, children, and elderly people have been evacuated from Mariupol's besieged Azovstal plant, but several hundred Ukrainian
Starting point is 00:01:53 fighters continue to hold a last stand. Despite the holdouts, Russia is hoping for a Victory Day parade in the Ukrainian port city, mirroring a larger parade and presidential address in Moscow. Meanwhile, Jill Biden offered encouragement to Ukrainian First Lady Alina Zelensky in a surprise Mother's Day visit. The day also brought more heartbreak. 60 are feared dead after reports that a school in the eastern Luhansk region has been shelled. Jesus showed compassion when people expected rejection, gentleness when people expected anger, and love when people expected hate. Whether you're helping evacuate a war zone or engaging with co-workers, be imitators of Christ. Philippians 2.4 says,
Starting point is 00:02:29 Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others. Hotel Saratoga, a five-star hotel just one block from Cuba's Capitol building in Old Havana, exploded on Friday, killing at least 30 people and injuring dozens more. It was apparently caused by a gas leak. The luxury hotel was a favorite of celebrities like Beyonce and Jay-Z in visiting government officials and, in some truly heartbreaking irony, was scheduled to reopen tomorrow after two years of COVID-related closures and renovations. This wasn't the only tragedy to hit the Caribbean on Friday.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Three Americans were found dead at a sandals resort in the Bahamas, and a fourth was airlifted to a nearby hospital. The bodies were found unresponsive in two different locations, showing no signs of trauma. Police are investigating, but indicated that, quote, The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this world, but it does give us hope, strength, and peace during life's most difficult seasons. Join us in praying for the families and first responders impacted by the tragedies in the Caribbean. Revelation 21.4 says, He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be
Starting point is 00:03:33 no more. Grief, crying, and pain will be no more because the previous things have passed away. This podcast is brought to you by Olipop. The sparkling water craze is in full swing, but let's be real. It's not because we prefer water that tastes like it was bottled near a single dried out lime. It's just healthier than soda. Until now. With plant fiber, prebiotics, botanicals, and a touch of magic, Olipop has made soda healthier and more delicious. Seriously, it tastes like the soda you grew up sipping, but it's actually good for your digestive health. And it contains one third of your recommended daily fiber and only two to five grams of sugar. We expect you to be skeptical, but are not sure how to convince you other than to point you to their sampler pack. Get 20% off

Roughly 100 pro-choice activists protested outside the homes of conservative justices Kavanaugh and Roberts on Saturday after a leaked draft opinion indicated SCOTUS plans to overturn Roe v. Wade. This week, other groups planned to protest at all six conservative justices' homes. More of the same isn't always bad. The Labor Department reported unemployment remained unchanged at a historically low 3.6 percent, and the U.S. economy added 428,000 jobs, a bit better than expected, in April. Unemployment is not the only thing that hasn't changed. There are still

Doctor Strange Into the Multiverse of Madness magicked its way to the biggest opening weekend of 2022 with its theater-only release bringing in $185 million domestically. It unseated the Batman from the year's top spot and brought in twice the haul of the original Doctor Strange, which was released in 2016. Hong Kong, which is sorta of autonomous from China, it's complicated, just elected a new leader. John Lee, who is pro-China and oversaw the crackdown against Hong Kong's recent pro-democracy protests, won 99% of the vote. Only 1,500 committee members were allowed to vote and the entire committee was vetted by Beijing. That's all we have for today. Thanks so much for listening.
