The Rittenhouse Verdict, a Chinese Tennis Player, COVID Updates, and other top news
for Monday, November 22nd.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
The will of God will not take us where the grace of God cannot sustain us.
Billy Graham.
Let's jump in with some espresso shots.
Celebration and outrage erupted simultaneously outside the courthouse as the verdict for Kyle
Rittenhouse was read, not guilty on all charges. Supporters of Rittenhouse are calling the verdict
a win for the Second Amendment and the rule of law. Some have suggested
he sue liberal media outlets for defamation, and a few Republican lawmakers have offered him
congressional internships. Critics are saying the verdict reflects a broken judicial system,
and say that Rittenhouse would have been treated very differently by both the police and the courts
had he been black. Protests of the verdict were seen across the country and
turned violent in Portland. Attention is now turning to another racially charged trial,
that of the three men who killed Ahmaud Arbery. Closing arguments begin today,
just in time for Thanksgiving dinner discussions.
Our first priority when discussing contentious topics like the Rittenhouse verdict must be to
reflect the love that we have received from Christ,
not to convince others of our point of view.
We must break the natural desire to only be kind and loving towards people we agree with.
Jesus says in Luke 6.32,
If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
The FDA is hoping simpler is better. Instead of limiting boosters
by vaccine type, Pfizer, Moderna, or J&J, or risk status, age, pre-existing conditions, job, etc.,
the FDA authorized all vaccine boosters for all adults. In the update, the FDA and CDC both
stressed that while all adults may get the booster,
people over 50 years old should get it. Meanwhile, cases across both ponds are on the rise.
Russia hit a record of daily COVID-related deaths, 1,250, multiple days in a row,
and Europe has become a new epicenter, sending Austria into an expected 20-day lockdown.
Not everyone is excited about the idea of more lockdowns.
People in Switzerland, Croatia, Italy, and several other European countries have taken to the streets in protest. From athletes to the UN, everyone wants to know, where is Pen Shui?
On November 2nd, Chinese tennis star Pen Shui accused a former Chinese Communist Party leader of sexual assault on social
media. The post promptly disappeared, and so did Penn. Until yesterday. Yesterday, the International
Olympic Committee claimed its president had a 30-minute video call with Penn, and state-run
media showed pictures of her making a public appearance at a youth tennis tournament. The
Women's Tennis Association, among others, isn't buying it.
They released a statement saying her public appearance and the IOC call are positive steps,
but they are insufficient, and Penn's safety and ability to communicate without censorship
or coercion remain major concerns. It's easy to feel helpless in a situation like this,
but the Bible promises that prayer is powerful and effective,
and that it causes things to happen that would not have happened otherwise.
Join us in praying for the safety of Penshuayi and for proper accountability.
James 5.16 says, The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.

What would you do if you were falsely accused of murder?
What would you do if you were falsely accused of murder?
For Hannah Overton, that question isn't hypothetical.
Hannah was a regular mom of four in Texas,
when out of the blue, she was falsely accused of murder.
Hannah was shocked by the lies,
and as a firm believer, she knew that God would come to her rescue and never let those rumors spread.
But the exact opposite happened.
Hannah eventually stood before a jury of her peers
and heard them sentence her to life in prison.
This was a terrible mistake.
How could God have let her down?
But Hannah would soon discover that God had a plan all of his own.

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates. Elizabeth Holmes, founder of defunct blood testing
startup Theranos, will take the witness stand again today.
In 2014, she was named the youngest self-made woman billionaire.
Now, she's broke and charged with 11 counts of defrauding investors.
Her defense attorney claims she was young, naive, and listening to bad advisors, who are really to blame.
are really to blame. Sudan's military chief, al-Burhan, reinstated Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok a month after ousting him from power in a military coup. Hamdok and al-Burhan have agreed
on a power-sharing agreement. Sudan's constitution will be amended to outline the partnership
between civilians and the military, which seems like a much-needed point of clarity.

This year's average Thanksgiving feast is the most expensive on record,
up 14% from last year thanks to inflation and supply chain shortages.
And that's just the dinner.
Gas is at its highest price in seven years, up $1.28 since last Turkey Day, and it surpassed COVID as the largest deterrent for traveling this Thanksgiving.

VP Kamala Harris was the first woman in U.S. history to wield the powers of the presidency, albeit briefly.
President Biden transferred presidential powers to Harris before being placed under anesthesia for a routine colonoscopy on Friday and reclaimed the responsibilities 85 minutes later.

After months of negotiating, cutting, and compromising,
the House passed President Biden's $1.75 trillion social spending and climate bill.
It would fund universal pre-K, expand Medicare, create renewable energy credits, and a whole lot more.
