Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about developments in the Middle East, resulting protests around the world, another potential Speaker of the House, and other top news for Monday, October 16th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour-Over. Here's the quote of the day, Let people pray together first so that they may associate in peace. Saint Benedict of Nursia. Let's get started with some espresso shots. The war in Israel seems to be awaiting escalation. At the first meeting of his new war cabinet,
Starting point is 00:00:43 Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu promised Israel would demolish Hamas. It's believed a ground invasion of Gaza is imminent. Israel has told Gazans to evacuate south, putting pressure on Egypt to reopen border crossings. Israel says nearly 600,000 Gazans have started moving, despite Hamas telling everyone to stay put. But Palestinian health care workers say evacuations are impossible for children and patients on ventilators. The World Health Organization said forcing patients to leave hospitals is a death sentence. So far, the war between Israel and Hamas has killed over 2,600 people in Gaza and wounded an additional 10,000. In Israel, 1,400 people have been killed and over 150 were taken hostage. World leaders are appealing for their quick release.
Starting point is 00:01:29 It's easy to feel helpless in a situation like this, but the Bible promises that prayer is powerful and effective, that it causes things to happen that would not have happened otherwise. Pray for comfort for those grieving. Pray for wisdom for leaders. Pray for peace. James 5 verse 16 says, The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Protests erupted across the Muslim world and beyond on Friday as supporters of Palestine heeded a former Hamas general's call for a day of rage. Israel's government warned Jewish people around the world to take extra precautions, and many American cities heightened security at places of worship and schools. Tens of thousands gathered in numerous countries, including Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Jordan. In France, a fatal knife attack was linked to demonstrations. In Lebanon, supporters of Hezbollah burned American and Israeli flags while chanting death to Israel and death to America, and cross-border clashes between Lebanon and Israel
Starting point is 00:02:36 intensified. Hoping to deter Iran and Hezbollah from joining in the conflict, the Pentagon ordered a second aircraft carrier and more Air Force fighter jets to the region, demonstrating U.S. support for Israel's defense. Here's a verse to consider when a conflict reaches fever pitch. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall. He lifts his voice, the earth melts. He says, be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us. The God of Jacob is our fortress. Psalm 46 verses 6, 10, and 11. House Republicans nominated Representative Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House on Friday.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Just one problem. Only 152 said they would support his bid, and he'll need 217 votes from the House to officially claim the role. Jordan says he'll win over detractors and the gavel by noon tomorrow, but the path there is murky. He has endorsements from former Speaker McCarthy and former President Trump, but has so far failed to woo more moderate members of his party. Meanwhile, Republicans are increasingly frustrated that the chamber remains leaderless. Among them is presidential hopeful Nikki Haley, who said the infighting is not a good look for the GOP. The former U. former UN ambassador has been gaining ground, passing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in recent New Hampshire polls to be the new
Starting point is 00:04:10 distant second behind Trump. If our hope is based on political negotiations or party leadership, then we live in fear because we could lose everything. But if our hope is rooted in Christ and his word, then we can weather any storm. Matthew 7, verses 24 and 25 says, Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. Today's episode is sponsored by Element. Microsoft has officially closed its $69 billion deal to buy video game developer Activision Blizzard. All it took was 22 months of lawsuits and hoop jumping to receive approval from 16 regulatory bodies across
Starting point is 00:06:06 the U.S. and Europe. Activision Blizzard makes hit games Call of Duty and Warcraft, and will hopefully release something starring Clippy soon. Senator Bob Menendez has found himself on even thinner ice. On Thursday, federal prosecutors added to their indictment against the sitting senator, accusing him of conspiracy to act as an agent of the Egyptian government while serving as the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Menendez has maintained his innocence and rebuffed fellow Democrats' call for his resignation. Kaiser Permanente reached a tentative agreement with union workers on Friday, ending the largest healthcare labor dispute in U.S. history, which saw 75,000 nurses, ER technicians, and pharmacists walk off the job. The deal promises a 21% pay raise over four years, increased training, and mass hiring events to fill current vacancies, among other guarantees.
Starting point is 00:07:04 and mass hiring events to fill current vacancies, among other guarantees. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry has been elected governor of the state, turning the governor's mansion red after eight years of being blue. Landry, a Trump-backed Republican and champion of conservative causes, replaces current governor John Bel Edwards, who didn't run again due to term limits. Landry avoided an unexpected runoff by winning more than half the votes. It's a story we know all too well, Taylor Swift crushing records.
