Ian proved to be one of the most devastating hurricanes to hit the U.S. After the storm, there's been very little calm and lots of work. Power has been restored to 2 million homes, though 700,000 remain in the dark. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is providing Starlink satellites to help restore connectivity in southwest Florida. As recovery efforts march forward, so does Ian's death toll. So far, there have been 47 lives lost in Florida, four in North Carolina, and three in Cuba. The massive recovery effort has forced regular communication between President
Starting point is 00:01:05 Biden and Governor DeSantis, political enemies, and potential 2024 presidential opponents. Pockets of violence broke out in Brazil as Brazilians voted in a highly contentious presidential election. Lula, a leftist former president, was polling ahead of right-wing incumbent President Bolsonaro, who has signaled he may not accept the results. In Iran, protests that were sparked by the death of Massa Amini, who died in police custody after being arrested for wearing a hijab too loosely, entered their third week. A group of military officers in Burkina Faso overthrew the government and is promising to end the Islamic violence that has prompted 2 million people to flee.
Starting point is 00:02:34 It's the country's second coup d'etat in nine months. God has called us to make peace wherever we can. Pray for God to bring peacemakers to places where there is chaos, and consider where you can be a peacemaker in your own setting today. Matthew 5.9 says, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. For investors, Friday was a disappointing end to another disappointing quarter. The S&P 500 notched its third consecutive quarterly loss and is down 25% so far this year as the markets fret over persistent inflation, threats of escalation to the war in Ukraine, wild currency
Starting point is 00:03:11 swings, continued supply chain issues, and more. Those general macro pressures are being felt at a few previously nearly invincible companies. Zuckerberg announced a hiring freeze, slashed budgets, and did not quell rumors of layoffs. They would be the first in formerly Facebook's history. And Meta stock is down 60% this year. Google is shuttering its video game streaming platform Stadia as part of company-wide cost-cutting efforts. It follows very un-Google-y statements from its CEO, who said that employees, quote, should not equate fun with money and should temper their holiday party expectations. There may be good reasons to be worried about this day, month, or year, but God does not promise
