King Charles gave his first address on Friday, honoring his mother and vowing his,

quote, lifelong service. It's thought that the king will pare down the monarchy, having a smaller group of core royals do fewer official things. That may become a trend. Only 39% of Brits expect the monarchy to last another hundred years. The world has different priorities than God does, and many eternally insignificant things are compelling for a season. These things may not be wrong to follow, but neither should they consume our attention. Colossians 3, 2-4 says, Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. The war is 200 days old, and Ukraine's counteroffensive against Russian-held territory in the east and south is picking up steam. Since late August, Ukraine has recaptured roughly 1,100

square miles, including strategic towns, roads, and rivers. The offensive has forced Russian troops to retreat. The Kremlin has said they're simply, quote, regrouping, a move that has drawn criticism from normally pro-Kremlin bloggers, press, and even the Russian-aligned semi-autonomous leader of Chechnya. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky even taunted Russia, saying its army is simply, quote, demonstrating the best it can do, showing its back. Meanwhile, that sigh of relief you heard this weekend was all the way from Zaporizhia. The nuclear power plant was reconnected to the electrical grid,

allowing all reactors to be powered down, greatly reducing the risk of a nuclear meltdown. Our hope is never contingent on who is winning a war. It's much more secure than that. Regardless of whether things get worse or better during your lifetime, everything eventually ends well for followers of Christ. Job 12.10 says, the life of every living thing is in his hand, as well as the breath of all humanity. Governors and mayors across the country are shouting emergency from their balconies. California Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency for counties threatened by massive wildfires that are so large they're creating their own weather patterns. The fires, extreme heat, and the remnants of Hurricane K are all stretching the state's electrical grid to its max.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Bowser declared an emergency on Thursday over an influx of migrants who were bussed in from Arizona and Texas. It's a move by the state's Republican governors meant to draw attention to the influx of migrants at the southern border. New York Governor Hochul declared an emergency over polio in an effort to boost vaccination rates. Although there's only been one confirmed case, the paralytic virus has been increasingly detected in the state's wastewater. Followers of Christ should not become cynical, desensitized, or unmoved by stories of those in need, but endlessly willing to help, seek, or create opportunities to do good and to share with people impacted by these news stories. Hebrews 13.16 says, don't neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.

Runners across the country rose early Friday to finish Eliza's run, honoring Eliza Fletcher, the Memphis, Tennessee wife,

mom, and kindergarten teacher who was abducted and murdered while on an early morning run last week.
