Hey there, this is Joe.
And I'm Peter.
Today, we're talking about a teen gunman
killing three children and a teacher in an Oregon school shooting.
President Trump putting a hold on planned Russian sanctions,
the Brewers heading to the World Series
and other major sports updates from the weekend,
and other top headlines for Monday, October 19th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with the pourover.
Here's your quote of the day.
We need never shout.
across the spaces to an absent god.
He is nearer than our own soul,
closer than our most secret thoughts.
A.W. Tozer.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Three children ages 5, 8, and 11,
and one teacher were killed in a shooting
at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon on Thursday.
The 16-year-old shooter hopped the school fence with a gun
before shooting through a locked door.
Once inside, he entered a classroom for students with special needs
and fired over 15 rounds,
killing three students and one teacher
and seriously injuring another student and teacher.
Both are in stable condition.
A 36-year-old father saw the suspect breaking into the school and followed,
shooting and killing him before police arrived minutes later.
Officials praised the father and a school staffer for their, quote, heroism,
during the harrowing incident.
The teen shooter was a former special need student at Silver Rail.
Authorities are investigating a motive,
but believe he obtained the shotgun from his mother.
Let's pray for Silver Rail Elementary.
Oh Lord, today it feels like evil has won.
Today the world feels hostile and precious life, fragile.
But your hand, O Lord, reaches farther than the darkness.
There's no place we could find where you will not be already.
ready, waiting to draw near, to be gracious.
The darkness is no match for your light, and its time is almost up.
Meet us here in the valley of the shadow of death, and shepherd your flock with your tender,
steady hand.
Bind up the wounded and heal them.
Strengthen the grieving to meet the coming days with endurance and patience.
Speak hope into sorrow, life into death.
Amen.
President Trump put sweeping new sanctions on Russia.
back in the broom closet.
Friday, POTUS signed an executive order that paused sanctions and major tariffs on Russian
oil buyers two days before they were set to take effect.
The White House said it's in America's, quote, national interest to pause implementation of the
Lindsay Graham sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2006, a bipartisan law Trump signed on
September 18th.
The 60-day suspension, which the State Department says, is aimed at
analyzing global economic impacts, comes a week after the president agreed to buy Russian diesel
to bring down gas prices. Critics from both sides of the aisle and around the world suggest the
recent decisions will power Russia's war machine. Russia and Ukraine are currently targeting
each other's energy infrastructure ahead of winter. The good news of the gospel is that God
loved us while we were his enemies. His love compels us to love our enemies.
political, international, or otherwise, so that the world may see his love through us.
2 Corinthians 5 says, for the love of Christ compels us, since we have reached this conclusion that one
died for all, and therefore all died, and he died for all, so that those who live should no longer
live for themselves, but for the one who died for them and was raised.
All right, before we hear about sports, you know the midterms are kind of.
Right.
And we are continuing our campaign to help you be informed without being overwhelmed when you walk into the voting booth.
And so in this week's TPO Explains episode, Kathleen and K.A. did a shallow dive on a new midterm topic.
What in the world is a shadow senator?
Give it a listen.
The Brewers are heading to their first World Series since 1982.
A year after the LA Dodgers swept them in the NLCS, Millwall.
Milwaukee brood some revenge and swept them back.
The back-to-back champs fell despite a higher payroll.
We're talking $339 million than the other three LCS teams combined, which is $316 million.
Gridiron Goliaths also fell too.
For the first time ever, five of college football's top eight put a tally in the loss column Saturday.
Auburn toppled number one, Georgia, on a last second field goal.
number 8, BYU outfought number two Notre Dame,
number four, Ohio State ended number five Indiana's 22-game win streak,
and number six Alabama and number seven Texas lost again.
On the hardwood, the Valkyries took WMBA Finals game one
from the dream in San Francisco, aka Balhalla.
Here's a verse to consider whether you're celebrating a win,
mourning a loss, or still in the middle of the battle.
I know how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot.
In any and all circumstances, I have learned the secret of being content,
whether well-fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need,
I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4, verses 12 and 13.
As food runs out in places like Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East,
there's one population that's quietly suffering in more ways than one.
Children.
Food scarcity and the growing orphan crisis are tightly linked.
Children's homes are one of the places hit hardest in areas like Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo,
where violence and unrest are making food scarcer and communities more fragile.
Serving orphans worldwide is there.
Combating this crisis by providing hungry children and babies with nutritious meals,
emergency groceries, life-saving formula, long-term food security, and the gospel message.
A gift of $12 feeds an orphan.

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
Protests reignited across France Saturday, as over 550,000,
people gathered to protest rising costs and sinking public services.
At least 1,800 demonstrators were arrested for clashing with police, looting luxury stores,
and setting fire to historic buildings.
French officials have expressed solidarity with peaceful protesters, while blaming criminals
and, quote, ultra-left groups for inciting violence.
Katie Zechariah handed in her press badge Friday.
The 37th White House press secretary held the position for five days before, quote, transitioning out,
making her the shortest tenured press secretary in history.
President Trump encouraged Zachariah to, quote, reconsider after a faltering inaugural briefing
and widespread criticism for describing herself as a lawyer despite not passing the bar exam.
Pope Leo the 14th walked out of the hospital unaided on Saturday, four days after
undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung.
He was discharged roughly three days earlier than expected and led the Angelus, or weekly
prayer, from his apartment window yesterday.
Information from the Vatican suggests the cancer was caught early, though its stage is undisclosed.
President Trump called off the live stream of the Fort Hood attacker's execution by firing squad
on December 3rd. The president said the broadcast might have deterred.
heard future terrorism, but noted that many, quote, well-meaning people would rather not watch him
die. The decision follows bipartisan backlash condemning the proposed live stream. Trump said
victim's immediate family can still attend in person. On Thursday, Tesla launched, like literally
launched its newest car in front of a live audience to prove it wasn't AI. The Tesla Roadster
includes cold gas thrusters
that let it go from zero to 60 miles per hour
in 0.81 seconds,
drive upside down,
and fly.
Stop what you're doing
and go find a video.
The invite-only, quote,
rocket model is not street legal,
but you can reserve a non-flying version
for $250,000.
That's all the headlines we have for today.
Here's a good word to encourage your heart.
No matter how dark the headlines get,
we know that neither death nor life, nor things present, nor things to come,
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
As always, thanks for listening, TPOFam.

The last word is a beautiful little story from our listener, Pam Cake.
She said, I have a morning ritual for my exercise routine.
Two podcasts that I can't live without.
They start out my day well.
Then, a friend that I volunteer with shared the pourover.
I gave it a try, and it's now among my top three podcasts that I can't live without.
I've told others and hope they will become fans.
Thank you, Pamcake, and thank you to Pamcake's friend who helped spread the word.
We're so grateful for you and all our listeners.
Have a great Monday.
We'll catch on Wednesday.
