A lone gunman rushed the White House Correspondents Association dinner Saturday night, firing shots in the lobby of the Washington Hilton Hotel. The suspect ran past Secret Service security barricades, shooting one agent in his bulletproof vest before being tackled outside the event ballroom. Agents covered President Trump on stage, then escorted him, First Lady Melania, and cabinet members to safety,
Starting point is 00:01:28 while guests took cover under tables. The agent who was shot has been released from him. the hospital and no one else was injured. Trump praised law enforcement's quick response and suggested the event may resume later that night before officials announced it was scrapped and will be rescheduled within 30 days. The suspect, a 31-year-old man, is expected in court today. Acting A.G. Blanche said preliminary reports suggest he was, quote, likely targeting President Trump. The U.S. and Iran are taking another rain check on peace talks.
Starting point is 00:02:40 President Trump canceled diplomats' trip to Pakistan this weekend after receiving an insufficient offer from Iran, saying the travel wasn't worth it for deals that are, quote, not good enough. POTUS said Sunday that, quote, they can call us, adding that further peace talks would happen over the phone. Officials say the parties are still oceans apart on opening the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran's nuclear program.
Starting point is 00:03:06 In an effort to squeeze Iran economically, Uncle Sam imposed fresh sanctions Friday on a major oil. refinery in China, along with 40 transporters of Iranian oil. Peace progress is tenuous in Lebanon, too. Israel hit Hezbollah with a series of strikes Saturday, two days after their ceasefire with Lebanon was extended by three weeks, aiming to eliminate rocket launchers and, quote, immediate threats. Starting point is 00:04:43 The 26 NFL draft wrapped up in Pittsburgh Saturday with a record 800,000-plus fans celebrating the selections over three days. The Raiders kicked off the offseason Super Bowl by taking Heisman winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza and the Jets snacked outside linebacker David Bailey. With the third pick, Arizona more than liked Notre Dame running back Jeremiah Love, making him just the third top three running back selected since 2012. 59 pass catchers, that's wide receivers and tight ends, snagged roster spots,
Starting point is 00:05:16 the most since the NFL moved to a seven-round format in 1994. The Denver Broncos made Univor. University at Buffalo linebacker Red Murdoch this year's Mr. Irrelevant, the bittersweet moniker given to the draft's final pick, who set an FBS record with 17 career forced fumbles. In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates. A single city in Gaza held elections on Saturday. Dair al-Bala, a city less damaged by war, hosted the Strip's first voting since 2006. Hamas guarded the polls but wasn't on the ballot and suspected Hamas allies won two of 15 seats. Palestinian Authority candidates won six, and they swept simultaneous West Bank elections. Despite a roughly 23% turnout, officials celebrated Gaza's, quote, first step forward.
Starting point is 00:08:03 The feds have stopped investigating the Fed. U.S. attorney Janine Piro announced Friday that DOJ is closing its criminal probe into Fed Chair Jerome Powell's handling of the central bank's multi-billion dollar renovations, handing the matter to the inspector general. The news clears the path for the Senate to confirm President Trump's pick, Kevin Warsh, to the chairman's seat. Mehta and Microsoft announced a combined 20,000 potential job cuts. Thursday, the social media giant said its unfriending 10% of its global workforce, while Microsoft announced its first-ever employee buyouts, covering roughly 8,750 U.S. employees. The companies are redirecting billions into AI infrastructure,
Starting point is 00:08:54 leaving some economists worried about an AI-driven labor crisis. A massive tornado tore through Enid, Oklahoma Thursday night, injuring at least 10 and damaging more than, The twister forced Vance Air Force Base to close due to damage and was part of a reported 18 tornado outbreak across Oklahoma, Iowa, and Kansas. Despite the expansive damage, Enid's mayor was, quote, grateful there were no fatalities. A U.S. Special Forces soldier has been arrested for using classified information to win $409,000 on polymarket.
Starting point is 00:09:36 The soldier allegedly placed a 33,000. bet that Venezuela's then-President Maduro would be removed from office days before the U.S. military's raid. The suspiciously timed wager fueled bipartisan calls to regulate prediction markets. Polymarket says the arrest is, quote, proof the current system works. That's all the headlines we have for today.
