Starting point is 00:00:00 Today, we're talking about the Supremes agreeing to decide whether Trump can be excluded from states' ballots, part of a plane's wall blowing out mid-air, Florida being cleared to import prescription drugs, and other top news for Monday, January 8th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over today. Here's the quote of the day. Let God's promises shine on your problems. Corrie ten Boom. Let's get started with some espresso shots. The Supremes are lacing up their sneakers for a primary season sprint. Friday, the Supreme Court
Starting point is 00:00:42 agreed to review Colorado's decision to remove former President Trump from the Republican primary ballot. The U.S.'s highest court will examine whether Trump's conduct on January 6, 2021, constituted an insurrection and whether the Constitution's clause barring insurrectionists from holding office applies to him. Justices will fast-track things, hearing arguments on February 8th to decide the case before Colorado's March 5th primary. Their ruling will also determine whether Trump can appear on the ballot in other states that are contesting his candidacy, like Maine and Oregon. Both Trump's team and his challengers praised the court's decision to give voters
Starting point is 00:01:23 clarity. The politically charged case marks the Supreme Court's most significant election involvement since deciding Bush v. Gore in 2000. The Supreme Court is in uncharted territory, but political chaos doesn't intimidate the King of Kings. Uncertain times are an opportunity for believers to demonstrate their faith in his good leadership. Psalm 47 verses 5 through 8 say, God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets. Sing praises to our king, sing praises. For God is the king of all the earth, sing to him a psalm So, that's what those oxygen masks are for. Part of a Boeing 737 MAX 9's wall blew out shortly after departing from Portland on Friday,
Starting point is 00:02:27 leading to an emergency landing and sending photos of the open-air flight all over the internet. The plane landed safely back in Portland with no serious injuries among the 171 passengers and six crew. The piece that came off is called a door plug because some variations of the 737 MAX have a door in that space, but it looks like a standard seat from the inside. The FAA has grounded all 737 MAX airplanes until they can be inspected. The entire 737 MAX fleet was grounded in 2019 after two crashes that killed 346. They were deemed safe to fly again in 2020. We can give thanks that no one was injured in this accident, even as we are reminded that each day is a gift from God. And every day is an opportunity for us to live a life worthy of his calling. Ephesians 4 verse 1 says,
Starting point is 00:03:27 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. The FDA has approved Florida's request to import prescription drugs from Canada. Sky-high drug costs are a bitter pill for Americans, pushing leaders like former President Trump and President Biden to look to imports to lower prices. Florida is the first state to get approval. The Sunshine State must now specify which drugs it wants, mainly treatments for chronic conditions, prove they'll be cheaper but not riskier, and provide quarterly updates to the FDA. The imported meds would first go to state health program patients,
Starting point is 00:04:11 then Medicare patients. The plan has side effects. Critics say it won't actually lower prices. The U.S. pharmaceutical industry is expected to sue, saying it's reckless and jeopardizes safety. And, facing its own drug shortages, Canada isn't interested in sharing and has introduced measures to protect its supply. Here's a verse to consider when you're seeking the Rx for a healthy heart in a sick world. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God whose word I praise. In God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? Psalm 56 verses 3 through 5. What would you do if you were falsely accused of murder? For Hannah Overton, that question
Starting point is 00:05:00 isn't hypothetical. Hannah was a regular mom of four in Texas, when out of the blue, she was falsely accused of murder. Hannah was shocked by the lies, and as a firm believer, she knew that God would come to her rescue and never let those rumors spread. But the exact opposite happened. Hannah eventually stood before a jury of her peers and heard them sentence her to life in prison. This was a terrible mistake. How could God have let her down? But Hannah would soon discover that God had a plan all of his own. Listen to Hannah's entire story on episode number 16 on The Compelled Podcast, titled Falsely Accused of Murder and Sentenced to Life in Prison.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was hospitalized Monday, and things are very hush-hush. Austin reportedly passed authority to his deputy without informing her why and waited three days to alert the White House that he was in the ICU. Austin claimed full responsibility for the secrecy, though it's still unclear what he's being treated for or when he'll be discharged. treated for or when he'll be discharged. Wayne LaPierre, who led the National Rifle Association for 30 years, announced his resignation on Friday, days before a much-ballyhooed civil lawsuit against him goes to trial. New York's Attorney General Letitia James has accused LaPierre and other NRA leaders of illegally using the nonprofit to fund their lavish lifestyles.
Starting point is 00:06:46 The NRA says James is weaponizing her office with the lawsuit. Uncle Sam added another 216,000 jobs in December, beating economists' expectations of 170,000 and bringing 2023's total to 2.7 million new jobs. Meanwhile, unemployment stayed flat at 3.7%, marking the first time since the 1960s that unemployment has stayed below 4% for more than two years. The Golden Globes were back last night with a facelift and without the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which founded the award show 81 years ago but disbanded this summer following a myriad of diversity and ethics scandals. Barbie was the top nominee under the new leadership, followed closely by Oppenheimer. The NFL's playoff field is officially set.
Starting point is 00:07:43 Wild Card Weekend kicks off Saturday without Baltimore and San Francisco, who have the weekend off thanks to being number one seeds. Meanwhile, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is widely rumored to have coached his final game in New England this weekend after 386 wins and six Super Bowl championships.
