Today, we're talking about a crypto arrest, a nuclear breakthrough, bribery in Europe,
and other top news for Wednesday, December 14th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over.
Here's the quote of the day.
Circumstances may appear to wreck our lives and God's plans, but God is not helpless among
the ruins.
Eric Liddell.
Let's start with some espresso shots.
Sam Bankman Freed, known as SBF, founder of defunct crypto exchange FTX, was scheduled to
testify virtually before Congress yesterday from his home base in the Bahamas, but he was otherwise
engaged. Bahamian police arrested SBF at the request of U.S. prosecutors
Monday evening. FTX was worth $32 billion earlier this year but filed for bankruptcy last month,
and court filings show it owes billions of dollars it doesn't have to over 1 million creditors.
Prosecutors say Mr. BF built a house of cards on a foundation of deception and charged him with eight criminal counts, including conspiracy to commit securities fraud and wire fraud.
FTX's new CEO, tasked with handling its bankruptcy, told Congress yesterday that the crypto giant was run by grossly inexperienced and unsophisticated individuals who failed to implement virtually any of the systems or controls that are necessary.
Christians should pursue justice while retaining love for both the victims and the attacker,
desiring restoration, not revenge. 1 Corinthians 16 verse 14 says,
Do everything in love.
For the first time ever, scientists have achieved fusion ignition sparking dreams of limitless clean energy.
Quick science refresher, which we definitely didn't need ourselves.
Existing nuclear power is generated by fission, the splitting of the atom nuclei,
which has the pesky byproduct of creating radiation and nuclear waste.
Fusion, the combination of atomic nuclei, generates far more power and and nuclear waste. Fusion, the combination of atomic nuclei,
generates far more power and no nuclear waste. It's the process that powers our sun. With fusion,
only a few pounds of matter would be enough to power entire countries. But it's really difficult.
The unruly nuclei require enormous energy to shove together and last week was the first time
scientists ever achieved a significant net
energy gain, getting much more energy out than they put in from a fusion reaction. While
celebrations are warranted, experts estimate we're at least a decade away from fusion power anything.
Here's a verse to consider when reading about amazing scientific discovery and accomplishments.
Our Lord and God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and
power because you have created all things and by your will they exist and were created.
Revelation 4 verse 11.
Cash and briefcases may look cool, but they're not a good look in politicians' offices.
Police conducted raids of some European parliament buildings in Brussels and Italy earlier this week following an investigation
into corruption, money laundering, and bribes by EP officials. Six individuals,
including one EP member and one of the parliament's 14 vice presidents, have been arrested.
While officials have not publicly commented, it is widely believed that the bribes are connected
to Qatar, which is no
stranger to bribery allegations. Both Qatar and the EP officials deny wrongdoing, though police
say they've seized 1.5 million euro data, cell phones, and computers connected to the bribes.
The EP took steps to strip those arrested of their titles and offices. The EP president promised to
both assist in ongoing criminal investigations and
launch its own internal investigation. Here's a verse to consider when you're wondering whether
anyone will find out about that walking around money you happened upon. The one who lives with
integrity lives securely, but whoever perverts his ways will be found out. Proverbs 10 verse 9.
will be found out. Proverbs 10 verse 9. This episode is sponsored by Haya. While most children's vitamins are just candy in disguise, Haya is made from a blend of 12 farm-fresh fruits and
vegetables and supercharged with 15 essential vitamins and minerals. All of the good, none of
the bad. That is excellent, but let's be real. The best part is convenience. Haya arrives straight
to your door on a pediatrician-recommended schedule
and gives your kiddo everything they need in just one vitamin per day.
Basically, Haya does everything but chew this thing for little Timmy,
and some days that's the level of service we need.

In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates.
We've got good, or at least good-ish, inflation news. Consumer prices were up a lower-than-expected 7.1% annually in November compared to 7.7% in October. Eggs, airfare, butter, and lettuce have seen the
biggest price hikes while prices are declining for used cars and tech devices.
Protests have sprung up around Peru, shutting down airports and killing at least seven,
after former President Castillo was impeached and arrested despite his attempts to dissolve
Congress and stay in power. Now President Baloarte has called for early elections in an attempt to appease the protesters calling for
a new government. The feathers keep flying. Twitter dissolved its Trust and Safety Council,
a volunteer advisory group of around 100 organizations formed to address issues like
hate speech. Meanwhile, Twitter Files Part 5 was
released, revealing that despite declaring the opposite, some Twitter staffers didn't believe
that former President Trump's tweets around the January 6th riots violated company policies.
Migrant crossings in West Texas skyrocketed to around 2,000 a day over the weekend,
one of the largest surges ever. Officials are expecting a
further rise in crossings after December 21st when Title 42 expires, a pandemic-era measure
that allows border officials to immediately deport most undocumented adults without a legal hearing,
meant to slow the spread of COVID. Mississippi State head football coach Mike Leach died
yesterday at 61 from complications from a heart condition.
Leach gained prominence with his high-scoring offenses, unorthodox interviews,
and no-nonsense attitude towards his players while coaching at Texas Tech and Washington State before joining Mississippi State.
