Today we'll be talking about even hotter temps, Fauci's future plans, a new report on the mass shooting in Uvalde, and other top news for Wednesday, July 20th. Roughly only 3% of UK homes have air conditioning, leaving residents sweltering as thermometers officially reached unprecedented heights to start the week. The blazing temperatures are impacting travel. Flights were canceled out of a London airport because the runway melted,

and train speed limits were halved to avoid rail buckling. Elsewhere in Europe, over 1,100 people have died from heat-related causes in Spain and Portugal, and thousands remain displaced after wildfires forced evacuations. And yet, the Tour de France is pedaling onward with one small adjustment. Organizers are soaking the course in water to keep the pavement from melting. In the U.S., over 40 million people in Southern and Central states remain under heat alerts as forecasts boil to 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

Here's a verse to consider whether your friend is asking for a cool place to stay or asking how they pull off the perpetually sweaty look. Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them. Luke 6, verse 31. After 36 years of anonymity and 28 months of non-anonymity, Dr. Fauci says his desire to continue leading the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease is nearly eradicated, and he has plans to step down at the end of Biden's term. Fauci says he expects COVID will outlast him. The BA.5 variant has caused cases to climb to 125,000 a day. That's up from 30,000 a day in April, but down significantly from 800,000 a day in January. COVID-related deaths have remained relatively flat since April.

And then there's monkeypox, the up-and-coming infectious disease. New York leads the country with over 600 cases, but Washington, D.C. has the most cases per capita. Demand for vaccines in these higher-count areas is crashing websites and sparking frustration, but cases and public concern remain near zero in most states. When discussing divisive topics such as COVID, remember that both your stance and how you take your stance reflect on Christ. We should not

be willing to sacrifice relationships to win an argument. Romans 12 verse 18 says, if possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. There's another report on the Uvalde school shooting, but it's not any better. The Texas state legislature wasn't unique in its harsh criticism of law enforcement's response. It cited systemic failures and egregiously poor decision-making, but it was unique in how widely it shared the blame. The report directly criticized law enforcement for the first time, calling out the 376 local, state, and federal officers who responded to the scene, all of whom should have known not to wait 73 minutes before engaging the

shooter. Conversely, a bystander's quick response to a shooting at a food court at an Indiana shopping mall Saturday evening is being praised. The attack left three dead and two more injured, but the shooter only discharged 24 shots of his more than 100 rounds before an armed Good Samaritan killed him. We live in a world marred by sin. Even while we work to promote accountability and redemption here on earth, we can rest in the knowledge that a day is coming where sin will be impossible and regret a distant memory. Psalm 23 verse 4 says, Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me. 4 says, Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me.

Twitter is accusing Musk of outlandish and bad faith actions, while Musk claims Twitter withheld information, created delays, provided evasive responses, and launched technical obstacles. Feathers ruffled. Customs and Border Patrol reportedly seized over $690,000 of narcotics, including nearly 90 pounds of cocaine at the border Friday. Recently, Mexico seized over half a ton of fentanyl in a historic raid. The busts come as the U.S. warns that Mexican transnational criminal organizations are increasing fentanyl production. What happens when House staffers create a labor union? We're about to find out. In February, the House of Representatives voted to allow staffers the right to unionize,

and this week, 85 staffers across eight Democratic members' offices did just that, citing low pay, long hours, and lack of protected leave. The man accused of fatally stabbing 37-year-old former NASCAR driver Bobby East at a gas station last week was killed during a shootout with police officers over the weekend. The exchange occurred after police attempted to serve the suspect with an arrest warrant unrelated to the stabbing. No officers were injured. Stocks rallied yesterday on investors' hopes that more robust earnings reports from companies indicate the markets may have bottomed out. Strong earnings included Netflix, which only lost 970,000 subscribers in Q2. Less than 2 million they expected to decline the Are You Watching prompt for the final time.
