From the 1800s to the 1970s, an estimated 150,000 Indigenous children in Canada were forced into government-funded boarding schools meant to assimilate them into Canadian Christian culture. Many were physically and sexually abused, and more than 4,000 died. About half of the schools were run by the Catholic Church, and Pope Francis is in Canada this week to humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by the schools. The Pope is being warmly received by many Indigenous leaders who are grateful for the acknowledgement and validation of the crimes committed. Others want more than just a week-long apology tour and are asking what concrete steps the Church will take to make amends.

Canada's government acknowledged its own role in the abuse earlier this year, agreeing to a $31.5 billion settlement with indigenous communities. We live in a world marred by sin. Even while we work to promote accountability and redemption here on Earth, we can rest in the knowledge that a day is coming where sin will be impossible and regret a distant memory. Proverbs 28.13 says, the one who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy. While most headlines out of Eastern Europe continue to seesaw, one new update is out of this world. With Russia re-invading Ukraine's south, Ukraine's non-NATO neighbor, Moldova, is re-anxious about Russia crossing its borders. For the rest of the EU, worries over natural gas supplies are reigniting after the flow of the Nord Stream pipeline was reduced to 20% due to what Russia deemed technical issues.

The slowed flow sent European gas prices surging and prompted EU governments to agree to a gas ration for the winter ahead. Regarding the final frontier, Russia announced plans to withdraw from the International Space Station after 2024, setting its sights on cooperation with the Chinese space program and building its own space station. The departure ends 25 years of partnership with NASA. Tensions between world
