Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about Russia's demands, gas, and other commodities hitting all-time highs, Apple's newest products, and other top news for Wednesday, March 9th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day. The scriptures are shallow enough for a babe to come and drink without fear of drowning and deep enough for theologians to swim in without ever reaching the bottom. St. Jerome. Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The U.S. and EU announced they're pulling the plug on Russian energy. This decision means that Russia is now the most sanctioned nation in the world, even more than North Korea or Iran, and their sudden jump to number one is rocking the global economy. Gas prices in the U.S. are at all-time highs. They're averaging $4.17 a gallon, and natural gas prices in Europe hit €345 per megawatt hour. Before 2021, the all-time high was just €30. It's not just energy. The price of nickel also jumped 76% on Monday, and wheat prices have ballooned by 50%. And the stock market has noticed. The Dow and S&P 500 both dropped in correction territory,
Starting point is 00:01:05 down 10% from a recent high, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq is in a bear market, down 20% from their recent high. Ouch. Our hope is in no way reliant on the economy. It's much more secure than that. Regardless of whether things get worse or better during your lifetime, everything eventually ends well for followers of Christ. Psalm 18.2 says, The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are all talk and very little peace, and they've failed to even create reliable avenues for humanitarian aid or civilian evacuations. Before the third round of talks, Russia promised it will end the war, quote, in a moment if Ukraine agrees to four conditions. The first is to cease military action. The second is to amend its constitution to rule out ever joining the EU or NATO. The third is to acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory instead of Ukrainian. And the last is to recognize two regions of eastern Ukraine as independent states. Ukraine declined. In a video call with a room packed with British parliamentarians, President Zelensky pleaded
Starting point is 00:02:14 for more support, criticized NATO for refusing to create a no-fly zone, which would require military involvement to enforce, and promised that Ukraine, quote, will not give up and will not lose. to enforce and promise that Ukraine, quote, will not give up and will not lose. It's easy to become angry and indignant over world events, but much more difficult to live with the tension of desiring change while simultaneously loving everyone involved. Followers of Christ are called to live in that tension, loving the very people they work against. Luke 6.32 says, if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love
Starting point is 00:02:45 them. Apple held its first product event of the year yesterday. It was a muted event and there wasn't so much as a new adapter or upgrade to their $19 cloth. The bulk of the time was spent unveiling the Mac Studio. This is a new desktop computer with an unnecessary amount of processing power. They also unveiled a new iPhone SE. It's a budget option. They added two new colors to the iPhone 13, green and alpine green. They introduced a new iPad Air and debuted a $1,599 computer monitor. While Wall Street responded with a collective shrug to the Apple event,
Starting point is 00:03:20 Bed Bath & Beyond stock has gone, well, beyond. The stock jumped 34% on Monday after news that Ryan Cohen, who's the co-founder of Chewy and the instigator of the GameStop stock frenzy of 2020, had purchased a 9.8% stake in the company. Here's a verse to consider if you found yourself drooling during the Apple event. Don't store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. That's Matthew 6, 19. Guess what is non-GMO, vegan, dairy-free, allergy-free, gelatin-free, nut-free, and everything else you can imagine? We guessed water and were correct, but today's correct answer is Haya. Haya is the pediatrician-approved, super-powered, chewable vitamin created by two dads tired of
Starting point is 00:04:01 children's vitamins that cause more problems than they solve. Haya fills in the most common gaps in modern children's diets without the added sugar and gummy junk found in other brands, but it also checks one more very important box. Even picky eaters love the taste. So parents get 50% off your first order with code POUROVER when you try Haya today. Grab the link in the show notes. In other brews, we've got a rapid round of updates. The Florida Senate passed the controversial so-called, quote, don't say gay bill, which bans classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade. While advocates say these topics should be broached by parents, not teachers, critics say the law would, quote, marginalized and attack LGBTQ people. Jurors deliberated about three hours
Starting point is 00:04:50 before finding Guy Reffitt, the first person to go to trial for January 6th, guilty on all charges. His son provided an emotional testimony against him. Also yesterday, the Justice Department arrested Enrique Tarrio. He's the former leader of the Proud Boys on conspiracy charges related to January 6th. The Pentagon announced that the man accused of being the 20th hijacker in the 9-11
Starting point is 00:05:11 terror attacks, Mohammed Mani Ahmed Al-Qahtani, was released from the Guantanamo Bay military prison and sent home to Saudi Arabia for psychiatric treatment. President Biden has pledged to shut down the prison, which houses 38 prisoners. If at first you don't succeed, try 199 more times. On Monday, the Senate unanimously passed the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act after 200 previous attempts at anti-lynching legislation dating back to 1918 failed to pass through Congress. The bill has been sent to the president's desk to be signed into law. Calvin Ridley's $1,500 bet lost him his $11.1 million salary. The Atlanta Falcons wide receiver was suspended for the entire 2022 season for breaking the NFL's strict no gambling on games policy. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers announced
Starting point is 00:05:57 it would re-sign Aaron Rodgers to an expected four-year $200 million deal, setting the quarterback to become the highest paid player in league history. Six teenagers ages 14 to 17 have been arrested in relation to a drive-by shooting outside a high school in Des Moines, Iowa. A 15-year-old boy who was believed to be the target was killed and two teenage girls were seriously wounded by crossfire. The suspects are being charged with first-degree murder.
