Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we'll be talking about a school shooting in Texas, President Biden's trip through Asia, the Ukraine war turning three months old, and other top news for Wednesday, May 25th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day. Your goal is not to know every detail of the future. Your goal is to hold the hand of the one who does and never ever let go. Max Lucado. At least 18 children and three adults were shot and killed in a Texas elementary school yesterday morning. Multiple agencies, including Border Patrol, responded to the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, about an hour and a half outside of San Antonio. In a press conference yesterday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott shared the
Starting point is 00:00:42 somber details of the attack. The now-deceased gunman, who is believed to have been shot by responding officers, was an 18-year-old man who reportedly attended the local high school. He allegedly shot his grandmother before driving to the elementary school, abandoning his car, and entering the campus with a handgun and potentially a rifle. Details on the attack are still emerging, and additional victims, some of whom are in critical condition, are still being treated at local hospitals. The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this world, but it does give us hope, strength, and peace during life's most difficult seasons. Join us in praying for hope, strength,
Starting point is 00:01:13 and peace for the families and first responders involved in this tragedy. Psalm 18.2 says, The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. It may not be leg day, but President Biden is focusing on his quad. Biden spent Tuesday in Tokyo meeting with the leaders of the quad nations, the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan. The informal group is focused mostly on security and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific, but it does not have an official mutual defense agreement. Tuesday's discussion included North Korea's weapons program, China's threats against Taiwan, and a controversial new security deal between China and the Solomon Islands. Speaking of Taiwan, President Biden said Monday that the U.S. would militarily defend the island nation from a Chinese takeover.
Starting point is 00:02:02 The statement raised eyebrows as the U.S. has long taken a, quote, strategic ambiguity, aka don't pick a side, approach to Taiwan. The White House later clarified that U.S. policy, quote, has not changed. There may be good reasons to be worried about this day, month, or year. God does not promise good days. He promises a great eternity. Stay focused on eternity. It changes everything. Philippians 4, 6 says, don't worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Russia's invasion of Ukraine turned three months old yesterday, a reminder that this wasn't the quick route and surrender that the world expected. A war's primary goal isn't great data collection, but the UN estimates that 6.6 million
Starting point is 00:02:45 Ukrainians have fled the country, 8 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced, and 3,942 civilians have been killed, and a 21-year-old Russian soldier who confessed to killing a civilian was just sentenced to life in prison. Ukraine's plan continues to be to wear down Russian forces. It's worked on at least one person. Russia's diplomat to the UN resigned his position, saying he was unable to, quote, share in the needless shame any longer. It's an opinion shared by Starbucks, which ordered a grande close a Chino. It's shuttering all 130 of its Russian locations. While you have likely no control over this war, you can control how you speak about it. Leave others with no doubt of your love for everyone involved, even for people
Starting point is 00:03:23 whose actions you do not support. Luke 632 says, if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. This podcast is brought to you by Olipop. Here's the pour over's guide to the evolution of soda. The classic, tons of sugar, tastes great. The diet, no sugar, but you know, chemicals and stuff. Zero, still replaces sugar with chemicals, but maybe tastes a little more like classic. And sparkling water, no sugar, but you know, chemicals and stuff. Zero, still replaces sugar with chemicals, but maybe tastes a little more like classic. And sparkling water. No sugar, no chemicals, basically no flavor. After a massive leap in technology we can't explain, there's Olipop.

In other brews, we've got a wrapping round of updates. The poor stock market can't string two good days together. Markets rose 2% on Monday, but followed it up with a less than productive Tuesday. Tech stocks were dragged down by snap, which fell a whopping 43%
Starting point is 00:04:33 after it reported bad earnings that it blamed on the, quote, macro environment. Five states had primary elections yesterday, but Georgia's was center stage. Governor Brian Kemp, a Republican who certified the presidential election results despite complaints of fraud by the then-President Trump, faced Trump-endorsed former Senator David Perdue. Early results showed Kemp winning the GOP nomination, and Stacey Abrams ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination. A third party hired by the Southern Baptist Convention's leadership to investigate its handling of sexual abuse allegations published a blistering report this week, asserting that the SBC was, quote, singularly focused on avoiding liability, not finding perpetrators or supporting victims. The SBC announced yesterday that they would publicly disclose known abusers.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Pfizer says a three-shot regimen, each shot being one-tenth of an adult dose, is effective at preventing COVID in children under five. If you missed some of those numbers, don't worry. Pfizer will submit the findings to the FDA later this week. There are currently no authorized COVID vaccines for children under five. The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is expected to wrap up this week. And while the jury hasn't weighed in, the court of public opinion certainly has. On TikTok, hashtag I stand with Amber Heard has 8.2 million views, while hashtag justice for Johnny Depp has 15 billion. That's all we have for today. Thanks so much for listening.
