Today we're talking about a historic ousting in the House of Representatives, the start
of former President Trump's fraud trial, the impacts of migrants on major U.S. cities,
and other top news for Wednesday, October 4th.
Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over Today.
Here's the quote of the day.
A man with God is always in the majority. John Knox.
Let's get started with some espresso shots.
Kevin McCarthy has lost his grip of the gavel. Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted
216 to 210 to remove McCarthy as its speaker, following a motion to vacate the chair by
Representative Matt Gaetz late Monday. Gaetz leads a faction of hardline Republicans who have long
clashed with McCarthy, most recently over his decision to keep spending levels steady and work
with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown. It's the first time ever that the House has voted to remove its own
speaker. While in uncharted territory, the House won't be completely acoustic. Representative Patrick
McHenry will serve as temporary speaker. It's unclear when a vote for a new, permanent speaker
will take place or who may win. It took a historic 15 votes to elect McCarthy in January,
and there is no obvious successor in place.
While this is big political news in the United States today, it's relatively small news for Christians in light of eternity.
Even in the midst of change and uncertainty on earth, our eternity in Christ remains secure.
Colossians 3 verses 2 through 4 says,
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died and your life is hidden
with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in
glory. Last week, a New York judge found former President Trump liable for business fraud,
ruling he exaggerated the value of properties to gain favorable bank deals.
The trial to assess damages began on Monday.
New York's Attorney General Letitia James is seeking a $250 million penalty
and a prohibition against Trump from running businesses in New York.
Trump's attorneys argued that the valuations were estimates and that the banks made back
their money with interest, so no harm was done. The former Air Force One-er, who has called the
trial a witch hunt and promised to appeal, has been in the courtroom both days and promised to
testify, but isn't getting along with the judge, whom he called a Democrat operative.
Yesterday, the judge issued a limited gag order
after Trump lashed out at a court clerk on social media.
While you likely have no control over the politically contentious investigations
into Donald Trump or anyone else,
you can control how you speak about them.
Leave others with no doubt of your love for everyone involved.
Ephesians 4 verse 29 says,
No foul language should come from your mouth,
but only what is good for building up someone in need,
so that it gives grace to those who hear. America's cities are filling up with migrants and are calling for
support. A record 200,000 illegal migrants were processed by Border Patrol in September,
and in the last year, Texas bussed over 22,000 of them to sanctuary cities like D.C., New York City, and Chicago. In response, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed over 2,000 National Guard troops
and invested $50 million in migrant processing.
Former President Bill Clinton called for a fix of New York City's broken system,
emphasizing the lack of available housing and the lengthy wait time for work permits.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker sent President Biden a critical letter this week,
noting a lack of intervention and coordination at the border.
The White House maintains the president is doing everything he can.
You probably have no control over U.S. border policy, but you are an indispensable part of Christ's
mission to demonstrate his love for the world. Reflect his unwavering compassion by loving your
neighbor humbly and unconditionally. John 13 verses 34 and 35 says, A new command I give you,
love one another, as I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that
you are my disciples, if you love one another. This episode is sponsored by Haya.

The move, now dubbed the Biles 2, is her fifth named skill. Later, Swiftie's tuning in for
