Starting point is 00:00:00 Today we're talking about a new Prime Minister in Britain, the latest jobs report, a deadly Canadian attack, and other top news for Wednesday, September 7th. Stay informed while remaining focused on Christ with The Pour Over. Here's the quote of the day. Our loving Lord is not just present, but nearer than the thought can imagine, so near that a whisper can reach Him. Amy Carmichael Let's start with some espresso shots.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Britain has a new prime minister and she's already busy. Yesterday, the Queen formally transferred power from Boris Johnson to Liz Truss, the 15th prime minister of her reign. Truss is stepping into a challenging agenda. The British economy is slumping towards recession and inflation is expected to hit 14% by year's end. And then there's the potential energy crisis. Over the weekend, EU leaders were forced to scramble when Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline flows were suspended indefinitely. According to Russia, Western sanctions preventing necessary maintenance spurred the stoppage. However, Europe has repeatedly accused Russia of weaponizing energy supplies.
Starting point is 00:01:03 The halt sent gas prices surging and stocks plummeting. Typically, the bloc replenishes reserves during warmer months in preparation for winter. However, with gas shortages expected to continue, ugly Christmas sweaters may be the next market to soar. Here's a verse to consider when facing what seems like an insurmountable challenge. I lift my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121, verse 1 through 2. The latest jobs report was encouragingly mediocre. The nation added 315,000 jobs in August, slightly below the estimated 318,000 and much lower than the 526,000 gained in July.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Unemployment rose from 3.5% to 3.7%. Just like Goldilocks, the report appears to be just right. A great report would have signaled the Fed's attempts to combat inflation weren't working and may have led to more severe interest rate hikes, but a bad report would have signaled the Fed may have gone too far. In crypto economy news, the Merge is coming. Blessedly different from the Purge, the Merge is a software update for the Ethereum blockchain that will reduce the energy consumption of the world's second largest cryptocurrency by over 99%. Crypto prices remain down about 60% from their highs late last year. Even if the economy collapses, God will still be God, and he will remain in control.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Our eternity is secure even in the midst of uncertainty on earth. Philippians 4, verse 12-13 says, I know how to make do with a little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances, I have learned the secret of being content. Whether well-fed or hungry,
Starting point is 00:02:42 whether in abundance or in need, I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me. The manhunt following one of Canada's deadliest mass killings continues. Two brothers have been charged with murder following a stabbing rampage over the weekend that left 10 people dead and another 18 injured in an indigenous community in the nearby town in Saskatchewan, Canada. One suspect was found dead on Monday and the other remains at large. Police say the motives remain unclear, though the chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations offered a statement suggesting that illegal drugs may have been involved.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Some of the victims appear to have been targeted, while others seemed chosen at random. The James Smith Cree Nation remains under a state of emergency, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement condemning the violence, saying the federal government stood ready to assist in any way possible. The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this world, but it does give us hope, strength, and peace during life's most difficult seasons. Join us in praying for hope and strength and peace for the families and the first responders in Saskatchewan. Revelation 21 verse 4 says, He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Death will be no more. Grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. Most companies that make the things we buy most often, shampoo, coffee, cleaners, etc., make some pretty illogical long-term compromises for short-term benefits, like labels that stand out on a store shelf but look horrible in your home, Thank you. use plastics, no toxic chemicals, and they keep costs low. In other brews, here's a rapid round of updates. More fingers will thumb through the docs seized at Mar-a-Lago. A federal judge granted former President Trump's request that a special master re-review the seized documents for anything protected by attorney, client, or executive privilege, noting Trump's personal medical and tax records were included. The DOJ's investigation is largely on hold until the review is completed.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Tropical Storm Earl is projected to become 2022's first significant hurricane, forecasted to hammer Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Too bad we can't direct the excess water to California. The state is issuing pleas to conserve electricity in the face of triple-digit temperatures, potential blackouts, and deadly wildfires. Instagram has been ordered to pay a record $402 million, roughly 1% of Meta's almost $41 billion cash pile, in fines by the Irish government for failing to adequately protect children's data, which included publishing phone numbers and email addresses. Instagram plans to appeal. Bed Bath & Beyond CFO Gustavo Arnal fell to his death from his New York City skyscraper residence on Friday in what has now been ruled a suicide.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Arnal was recently named in a lawsuit accusing him of insider trading, and earlier in the week, the company announced it's laying off 20% of its corporate staff. If you or someone you know is struggling from suicidal thoughts, call or text 988. 988. Amazon's $715 million Lord of the Rings prequel series hauled in a massive 25 million first day viewers. HBO's new Game of Thrones prequel, only 10 million. Amazon suspended reviews after being flooded with one stars for as many reasons as Hobbits in the Shire, too woke, too violent, too far from Tolkien's original, etc. That's all we have for today.
