Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end.
Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law.
Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Make me walk in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.
Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to covetousness.
Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in your way.
establish your word to your servant who is devoted to fearing you turn away my reproach which i dread for your judgments are good behold i long for your precepts revive me in your righteousness
lord we love you we bless you we enter your courts with thanksgiving and your gates with praise we declare that you are good and that your mercy endures forever
we declare these things Lord again and again because they are true and that you never change
and so they always will be true it always will be the case that you are full of love and mercy
and righteousness and justice and truth help us lord for we are weak help us lord for we have not
turned our eyes away from looking at worthless things
Help us, Lord, for we have not nourished ourselves on your word the way that we are called to.
Help us, Lord, for we have not been obedient in the way that you have instructed us.
Help us, Lord, for we have set our sights and our eyes and our desires on things that you never intended for us.
Help us, Lord, for we are weak and feeble.
and Jesus your word says that you ever live to make intercession for us and so lord according to
the promises in your word we repent we repent of our sins of ignoring your word of not
coming to your word to receive our daily bread of jumping into the day before communing with you
of not giving you the thanks and the gratitude and the service that is simply par for the course,
what our baseline is, Lord.
We have failed in so many ways even at that.
But, Lord, you are rich in mercies and grace and forgiveness.
You will, as the psalmist says, you will revive us in your righteousness.
not because of our righteousness not because of anything other than the glory it brings to your
name to show that you are capable of these things and that your heart your heart of love is
turned towards us and that you desire to revive us help us lord we are in dire need of a fresh touch of the
Holy Spirit of the right kind of healthy inspiration to pursue you, to pursue the word, to get
set up, to be nourished by you through your word, through prayer, through your Holy Spirit,
through all of the spiritual disciplines day by day by day. Lord, you have prepared this for us,
you have appointed it for us, you have prescribed it to us, you have provided it for us.
so help me lord we say that we delight to walk in the path of your commandments but we lack the strength to do so
lord only you can establish us only you can give us understanding and the strength that is necessary
to keep your commandments to follow you lord turn our eyes away from looking at worthless things
revive us in your way
establish your word in our hearts
help us to serve you
properly the way that we are called
we bless you Lord
and pray that you would redeem this time
there are so many who are
hurting so many who are seeking
so many who need answers from you Lord
I pray that you in your faithfulness
would answer them through your word
even today or tonight
whenever people are listening.
Even now, Lord, I pray, Holy Spirit,
that you would go forth to wherever someone is.
And that you would bring a verse to mind
that would speak a word of life,
that would speak a word of encouragement,
that would speak a word of discipline.
Lord, that we know is intended for true sons and daughters of the king,
a kind of discipline that leads us in the way of righteousness.
God, bring us a word.
word bring us your presence and your power through your living word Jesus your word says that
the word was with God and the word was God and Jesus you are that word of God and your word will
never pass away we declare it to be true we declare it to be holy we declare it to be sacred
we thank you Lord for the gift that it is to have access to your word to hear directly from you
to hear directly from you personally and supernaturally Lord speak to each one of our hearts
give us hearts of flesh and not hearts of stone help us Lord to be generous in spirit
to be forgiving to others as you have forgiven us we pray for you to cover us cover us Lord
with the might and the power and the authority of your blood
so that we could be lifted up and revived
through your righteousness.
God, let it be established in these times.
Let it stand as a testimony to those around us.
God, you are owed a great harvest in this generation.
So let it be established
and call your people back to your word.
We bless you, Lord.
We praise you.
We give you all the glory and all the honor.
In Jesus' name, amen.
Reading here from Psalm 119, I must confess that this is motivated by a sermon that was
preached at my home church just yesterday about the need to return to the word of God and some
theological points and some points of tremendous appreciation about the power and the might
and the gift that it is that we have the Word of God in our hands and in our pockets and on our
computers in a way where we can read it and access it without fear of reprisal where we are.
That's not always going to be the case in every single situation, geographically, culturally, politically, or even across time.
So it's a rare moment where we, those of us who are non-ordained clergy, can have the gift, the vitally precious gift of being able to read the Word of God and to encounter the Word of God in a variety of different formats at our fingertips whenever we so choose.
and what do we do with this unspeakable gift?
What do we do with this incomparable blessing?
Brothers and sisters, the word of God, if you open it up and you ask the Lord to speak to you through it,
he will speak to you through it.
His presence will arrive.
You will have a sense of what you need to do, even if what you need to do is to repent of
things that the Holy Spirit is bringing to mind like the psalmist is alluding to here he's asking for
his eyes to be turned away from looking at worthless things there are so many more worthless things
about now than there were before and so we too can find ourselves in this position saying I need to
be revived my enthusiasm and my excitement and my desire for the word needs to be revived I
want to desire the word.
I want to allow that hunger for the presence and for the supernatural giftings and
empowerments and promises and vision for my life and for the life of the church in
general that I am so hungry for that that it would take precedence over everything else,
that it would be a centerpiece, that it would be a starting point,
that it would be a linchpin, that it would be our firm foundation upon which everything else
is built. Jesus, after all, instructed us to seek first the kingdom of God. Well, the kingdom of
God is tied up in the Word of God. If we're seeking the kingdom, then we should learn about
the kingdom through the Word of God, through Jesus, through the work of the Holy Spirit,
inspiring the authors of scripture brothers and sisters scripture is reliable it is verifiable it is
strong it is eternal it is never changing it is mighty and it carries with it the god-breathed words of
the lord almighty how would we ever be justified
in saying, okay, let me take care of this other thing first, that we know is something worthless.
When we wake up and jump on our phone instead of going into the word or going into prayer,
what does that really say about our priorities?
And here, preaching to the choir, I am in the process, and I say in the process because
it's only by God's grace that can really change these habits.
my goal is to pray that the Lord would reignited me a passion for his word so that I would be able to wake up early to spend that time with him in prayer.
And I did that today motivated by the sermon that I heard and I would be remiss if I didn't pass it along to you that it was just an important time.
It was an important time for me in the Word and with a new season approaching with new opportunities, new questions, new directions, I need a fresh word from the Lord.
I need a fresh touch of the Holy Spirit.
Not that it displaces or removes the older things, but I need God's presence.
I need to draw near to God so that He will draw near to me.
all scripture is useful for this kind of teaching and reproof and this kind of guidance this kind of
guardrail this kind of stepping stone this kind of foundation this kind of strong tower
the word is mighty the word is forever the word is capable of sustaining us and keeping us and
providing for us brothers and sisters shouldn't we just read the word if we're listening to it and
it's on in the background but we're not really paying attention are we really listening to it or is it just
in one ear out the other if we're reading the word are we skimming through it and then flipping a page
only to realize hey i honestly don't really have a good idea of what i just
read on the prior page. I mean, I'll raise my hand on that one. I think it happens to everybody
from time to time. So are we doing that or are we purposefully spending the time in God's
word to draw near to him? I would posit that if we aren't, then we are missing the kind of
opportunity that would be worthy of scorn and scoffing if the Lord didn't love us so much.
Certainly, it's worthy of the enemy to scorn and scoff, knowing that the sword of the spirit
and knowing that the Word of God are our primary offensive weapons or our primary modes of
encouragement are the things that Jesus used to fight and to resist the devil when he was
tempted. We're potentially finding ourselves as objects of scorn of the forces of spiritual
darkness because we have such a potent and effective weapon in the name of Jesus and in the
word of God. And yet we never picked them up. We never sharpen the sword. We're not spending
that kind of time. It's not consistent enough. And so we find ourselves in all manner of different
types of quicksand, unspoken issues, unspoken problems, damaged relationships, a failure of
vision, ongoing and besetting sins, a lack of honesty, a lack of transparency. Lord, help us
from all of these things, deliver us from all of these things, set us free from all of these things
so that we could breathe a sigh of relief finally so that we can worship you so that we can follow you
so that we can serve you so that we can love others so that we can demonstrate your generosity
and the testimonies of what you've done in our lives. Lord, help us, help us to unlock all these
things by dedicating a renewed priority to your word. All of these things can, will, and must happen
because the word of the Lord never returns void.
It accomplishes its purpose.
It is mighty and supernatural and good.
Lord, please direct our paths.
Please direct our paths.
We've made so many messes of things
when we try to carve out our own steps.
Lord, lead us and help us to understand
that being led is
part and parcel to opening up the word allowing the word to speak to us and to inform what's going on
and we won't have much trouble because the Lord is faithful to his promises and he will if we draw
near to him and draw near to his word with open hearts looking to glorify God and to receive
from him then we will receive via the Holy Spirit now that kind of ministering
is so critical. I just pray that the Lord would minister to all of us in that way, that he would
encourage us through this broadcast and through other mechanisms and means directly from
the Holy Spirit, indirectly. However, it has to happen. Lord, you know each and every person's
situation. You know each and every person's circumstances. So inspire us. We need to be inspired.
And inspiration isn't just the kind of thing that we can plug in
play or invent for ourselves. Inspiration needs to carry with it an understanding of what will
happen provided we really lock into these. And it's not all a clear trajectory. Sometimes when we
draw near to God's word and the Holy Spirit wants to pick something out for us, it's because
there's something that we need to repent of, something that we need forgiveness for, something
that needs to be cleansed and put under the blood and sent away and broken off of our lives,
something that we need to be set free of.
And we have to remember that it's the children of the king who are disciplined and chastened.
It's the children of God who the Lord chasens and disciplines and helps with those things.
And we see the same mechanic in our own lives.
we see the same kind of situation playing out all over.
But at the end of the day, who among us can really sit down and say,
oh, I know the way of God's laws, I know the way of God's statutes,
I know what I'm supposed to be doing, I'm basically a good person.
This is the kind of autopilot that we see all over the place.
That as soon as you get past the baseline layer, that kind of statement,
kind of argument, that kind of approach, it just becomes ridiculous on its face. What is the
right way to apprehend who we are and what we are? Well, it's in God. We live and move and have our
being. There's nothing made that wasn't made by him. He is the Lord of all lords, the king of all
kings, and he is personally loving to each and every one of us. So much so.
that he sent his only begotten son Jesus to pay the price for our sins and Jesus went to the cross
God the son incarnate in human flesh he went to the cross he despised the shame and he did it
for the joy that was set before him how are we going to understand these things how are we going to
understand our commandments who god is how we should behave if we don't read the word
If we just get it secondhand, if we sit and listen to Bible teaching or preaching or sermons or podcasts or things like this hour after hour, day after day, week after week, but we're not in the word of the Lord, then I would argue that our balance between primary source material and secondary source material is out of whack.
everything is important everything is valuable everything is critical but brothers and sisters we cannot
do without the word of god sometimes it's often to wonder when things don't go exactly our way
how do people do this how do people even live this life without jesus and i understand that question
i understand the heart cry at the bottom of it one of gratitude one of despair for
the lost, one of intercession, one of praise to the Lord. But brothers and sisters, are we going
to read the word or not? Are we going to be involved in the great commission of the Lord or
not? Are we going to follow what God's word says about God's word? Are we going to do the things
that are required of us? Are we going to find ourselves with God's word? We're going to do the things that are required
with God's word established, are we going to be devoted to the fear of the Lord that should
want and need to know what is going on? How should I behave? What should I do? What should I
even pray for? Lord, you need to help us. And he will, brothers and sisters, he will.
Our God is a faithful God, a righteous God, a true God, a just God.
And he's not like a man that he should lie, and he is forever and ever the same.
Yesterday, today, and forevermore.
So, Lord, would you teach us the way of your statutes so that we could keep it to the end?
Lord, will you give us understanding so that we can keep your law and observe it with our whole heart?
Lord would you make us walk in the path of your commandments we delight in it lord this is what we truly want
we truly want to be obedient to you knowing that that is the right decision lord would you incline
our hearts to your testimonies and not to covenousness lord would you turn away our eyes from
looking at worthless things lord would you revive us in your way
show us what that means your way speak to us about what that implies as we go forth help us lord help us to
understand that all of these things all of these promises all of these good and wonderful things
that they are available to us through your word help us to understand it establish it make it so that we have
a firmness of purpose in terms of our stated attention to spend time in your word, make it so
that you will receive the glory when you give us the strength to follow through on that.
Lord, because without you, we can start strong but then habits deteriorate.
We can find excuses.
We can find bad systems and, oh, I'm just not that organized.
or oh, I'm doing this other thing.
Oh, this, oh, that.
Lord, help us to put aside all of the excuses.
Help us to pursue you the way that you deserve.
Help us to be established in your word at all times.
And help us to be inspired, Lord, by your word.
Give us a fresh touch of inspiration,
a fresh touch of a pathway to obedience.
Lord, show us what it means for people,
to seek first the kingdom of God.
Show us, Lord.
Show us, Lord, what it means to be your people.
Show us what it means to be revived because of your righteousness.
Revive all of us, Lord, in our desire for your word,
in our passion for the things of God,
in our desire to be near you, Lord.
God, help us.
Would you help us just open our Bibles?
at the end of the day
that's what all this is about
Lord just help us open our Bibles
I know it seems a little bit silly
I think we could open the Bible for ourselves
but Lord help us to open our Bibles
Lord establish us
help us to open our Bibles
and to receive from you
the daily bread that you promise
you are forever with us
through your Holy Spirit
you ever live to make intercession for us
And we pray, Lord God, King of kings, Lord of Lords, our Savior, our Messiah, our chief.
Lord, would you be magnified through us because of your word, because of us turning back to the things of you?
Help us, God.
Help us.
Turn our eyes away from looking at worthless things and turn us to your word so that you
would reap the benefits of a harvest that you deserve in this generation.
We bless you, Lord, and we praise you.
In Jesus' name, amen.
