The night of the family is there. I'm your host, Jordan. It is so great to have you.
Okay. So as we're starting out, if you are over on Block Talk Radio,
hop on over to prepperbroadcasting.com and join us here in live chat.
I've got some great individuals here, some regulars, and we would love to have you some
great discussions, and I'm glad to see that the emergency blanket that I did a giveaway on,
scarf blanket slash emergency blanket, actually was received by Blind Dutchman, one of our
regular listeners here, and he loves it.
So I'm always happy to see that.
don't worry, I will be doing more giveaways in the future, just have to do it based on what I'm
capable at the moment, which will get us in tonight's topic. We are talking about buying on a budget.
Now, we all know, especially those who have children or period, is money is an issue for anybody.
It is something we struggle with day to day. And it seems something we all.
all have to deal with whether we want to adult or not.
All right.
So, all right, I am sorry, I apologize.
I was looking at the chat.
I am having difficulty multitasking.
It seems like, all right, so put on the budget.
So we never want to be in a situation where we can't afford life necessities or be able
to afford to be able to feed our family.
And another thing, preps don't always come free.
There are things that we can do to make it easier on us, but there are ways to be able to save money to be able to buy.
So if there are some preps we can do lower, and there are other ones that we do need to save up for.
Well, either way, besides any extra that we want, we need to be able to make sure we can make ends meet.
So a big thing is, first off, you need to know how much you spend or roughly how much you spend.
I think that is a big issue that people make.
Actually, we're going to go ahead and mention some of the mistakes that a lot of people make when they try to budget.
You know, a lot of people will fail to keep track of how much money they spend.
and if you're anything like me
well you know what
I can actually manage money
better than anybody in my household
my mother-in-law though is even better than I am
so I do refer to her for help
so don't be ashamed to ask for help
my husband
actually is a good
good tip on this one
a debit card is too easy to use
because it's just swipe swipe go
I am a fan of cash
I like cash because I can hold on to it twice
as long as money on a card because I know exactly how much I have in hand and how much I see.
Now, I can keep track of a card with no problem, and I do, but I also keep a constant running
calculator of any amount that I spend and I check my account frequently.
So, as G-Man in our chat said, I can manage money.
I managed to spend it really well.
Yes.
Actually, Highlander, I am not.
I used to coupon.
You mentioned that I was a super couponer.
I used to, but a lot of the policies around stores around here have changed so much that I'm not able to coupon like I used to.
So, hey, if anybody out there is a couponer, please send me an email, a.
com, A.com, please, I would love some tips.
I'd love some advice because anything to save, especially for my household, we feed five to six people at a time.
It just varies on the day.
So I have to manage money a lot more tightly.
So I would love, love to hear any bits of advice that anyone may have as far as coupon.
And I am not against it.
Okay.
So another piece of advice or a mistake that people make is they, so back to number one,
is they sell to keep track of how money is spent or they forget the difference.
Number two is forgetting the difference between needs and want.
You need to be able to prioritize what you really need versus what you just want that you can live without.
Many people take advantage to credit cards.
That's actually a big no-no.
Many people take a thing to their student or school loans.
That part can actually really hurt you.
Living in the moment.
Oh, my goodness.
Believe it or not, yes, it's not a system for yourself.
And I'm not saying you can't.
But sometimes living in the moment can cost you more money than you really mean to.
So, okay, so one of our listeners in here was making a comment that his wife says,
spend the dang money because he buys cheap and it breaks.
Okay, so there is a situation where you don't want to buy cheap and you want to buy something that's of good quality,
but you want to make sure you're able to afford it.
So don't buy on impulse because you just happen to have it for something less.
when really like in our household we try to we make a list for something big that we want and we set a little bit aside out of each check or every other check or however we're able to manage it five dollars here ten dollars there so we can work our way up to what we want or we work it out as christmas gifts like we'll put in a portion if you'll put in the remainder to da and that's how we're teaching our son to manage money he actually has a drone he wants he saved up a quarter of it so we'll put in a portion so
far. We mentioned if he could meet us a quarter to halfway, we would make up the difference
because the drone he's looking at is a good couple hundred dollars. So we're trying to teach him
to understand the value of saving money and being able to put money up for things that he actually
wants and not buying on an impulse because that's an issue a lot of individuals have today
is buying it on an impulse. And don't be surprised. You are going to be easily tempted. That's
why they put candy and odds and in things right there at the checkout.
I mean, it is just to draw your attention because guess what?
Impulse buying makes up such higher percentage of what people actually spend
that these companies and that these stores make most of their money.
So tip number one, make a list, okay?
Make a list whether it's going to be what you pay, what your bills.
list can help you.
All right, so T-Man right here is, I guess, the common example of a impulse buy.
I cannot pass up a Reese's peanut butter cup.
It is hard.
It really is, but you have to, if you have to really pinch your pennies like we do,
you have to watch how you're spending.
Now, I'm not saying you can't get you one, but believe it or not,
sometimes it's cheaper to get the bigger pack than it is to get just one.
Okay, so look at how your money, how you get your money during the month.
In my household, I'm paid bi-weekly and my husband's weekly.
So it helps us out on being able to stretch things just a little bit more.
But if you're bi-weekly, base it on your bi-weekly payment.
It's really something you need to focus on.
Do not, please, do not look at the beginning of the month
and write out how much money you are going to bring home and how much your total bills are.
I'm not saying it doesn't work, but I've seen it before, especially when my husband and I have
our own ways of doing it, and I actually balanced everything.
Now, he would make the mistake of right now the entire income and the entire bills, which is fine.
But the problem is, is you cannot spend money you do not have.
So until you get that second or third check, that money is not there.
You have to base it on what you have.
Big number one, do not.
Or if you can help it, try to never go into the next month owe any bill.
If you can get everything paid off now, you're going to have less to have to worry about.
It's nice to go into the next month absolutely clean in the sense, you know, not owe in anything.
Do not be afraid to sit down and write everything out.
Yes, it's going to be stressful.
Yes, you're going to see some numbers you don't want.
like, but I promise you, there's always a way to work it and manage it out. So the big number
one that a lot of people feel to really look at is, all right, so for us, I make sure all of our
major bills are paid. Now, this may not work for y'all, but this is what works for us.
Make sure your major bills are paid. We have two big bills. So if we can split it up where
it's the two big bills that we have to pay each month are on the same day that my husband and I are
both paid, it makes it so much easier to be able to manage the rest. Now, those of you who are working
on a single income, I've been there. You can make it work. And God bless you, I promise you,
even though you are busting your butt, you've got it going on. Next thing is, is look, count for your
gas. Make sure you have money for your gas. I know I can go $20 to $30 a week on gas,
depending on where I fill up, I do take advantage of the reward systems with the BP down here.
Every time you fill up, you save points.
So yes, there are going to be a few times you're paying full price.
But if you save up enough, I've gotten 59 cents off a gallon.
That can make a huge difference on a day that you don't have very much to get you by.
Highlander, I'm not sure what that is.
Could you elaborate a little bit more before I actually read that?
So Highlander made a comment in here.
I'm waiting to see what he has to say it.
And then we'll see what that is.
Okay, so he also mentions the Crocker card, which I do have that,
and I have the shell card.
I do take advantage of anywhere that I can fuel that closest to me
that's actually going to offer the most.
He says, when I shop, I get gas miles.
I can get a dollar off.
And that's true.
And we are going to get into the grocery shopping
because that is a big factor.
And but before that,
You need to, when I set the list, you've got to look at your monthly.
You've got to look at your weekly.
And figure it out.
Figure out how much you need for your groceries.
Figure out how much you need for.
No, it's just mommy.
Okay.
So, right.
Someone said, she got 85 cents off a gallon last week.
Needless to say, we filled the tank.
You know what?
That is wonderful.
Take advantage of some of those perks.
Believe it or not, those point systems can really save you in a budget.
bind. I mean, they really get you a lot further than what you would have been before. And if you
don't have to pay full price, then there is no point in it. Michael Klein, this one's view. That's where
being cheap won't necessarily hurt you if you can save a few bucks, as long as it's not cheap
quality. Okay, sorry, ladies and gentlemen, I had to get a drink. It is real warm.
All right, so Tima says, I use a bit of dumpster diving and still like to go to the dump. Great
finds on occasion. And you're right. You can actually find some great stuff. I've seen roadside
shopping, as we'd like to say it, when you see one or two things set out on the curbside
that actually have some great use or great potential that you could fix up. If you have the time,
if you have the ability, by all means, do it. There is no shame. I am a fan of yard sales.
I am we like goodwill
depending on which we have two in our
two close to us one is organized
the other is not the unorganized one
is a lot cheaper it just takes more time
so it just depends if we need clothes and stuff
I do like some of the thrift shops
some of the antique stores sometimes have some good things
mark down
I okay so another one on here
says I go around the apartment
when students leave up my TVs, computers, chairs, desks, bedrills, and electronics.
I hope that is because they have actually left the apartment to not come in back.
Oh, M.K. I'm not reading that one.
Okay, so yeah, see if you on the other one.
The stuff is outside.
I was just making sure.
But, you know, don't be afraid of apps or.
calendars or
programs to help you.
I mean, everybody has their own that helps them.
I am the world's best with a calendar and a pen and paper or a pencil and paper and a calculator.
I like being able to write mine down.
I like being able to see it.
I like being able to know where it goes.
Don't be afraid to account for any mishaps because that is something you need to look at.
So if you can, if you're able to,
Set aside five, $10 from each year checks.
I mean, that's a good way to set up.
You're going to laugh, but in the past, I have actually, when my husband and I were recently married,
I always took a little bit out of my check and I put it up.
Well, I didn't trust banks, and I still don't put everything in the bank,
not because they're not, not that they're awful, but it just is going to be a matter of convenience.
Yes, as Flying Dutchmen would say, a rainy day fund.
Well, just so happened.
The radiator, maybe in the transmission.
I don't know.
We've had a few cars mess up on us.
Something went out on one of our vehicles, and we had to get it worked on.
At the time, you know, we really didn't need to be in a bind.
And it's freaking out.
I said, don't worry.
And he looked at me.
He says, where is it?
And he knew exactly what it was because I'm the world's worst for hiding money in the house
and he'll never know in it.
I said lift up the DVD player.
There was about $300, the same exact amount we need it to be able to fix the truck.
So it took, you know, depending on your job or what you're in, it may take a little more time, but don't have a, don't worry about it.
Now, the only reason it was under there is because he never checked under the DVD player.
That's not my usual spot to hide stuff ever.
But it just happened to be where I put it that day.
but yeah
I mean I before that
actually after that whenever I try to save money
I'd have an envelope and I'd put
five ten dollars maybe a couple ones
whatever you had
and right
so Abigail Adams makes a good point
before I go into the other one
just don't leave it where a toddler can get it
new story this week about a kid who shredded a thousand dollars
I saw that I saw that the boy sent it straight
through the shredder which I would not be leaving a shredder
where a child could get to it.
But that's neither here and or there.
I'm not judging them on their parenting.
Toddlers are notorious for getting into things
and for reaching things you didn't think it's possible.
So it definitely, definitely, yeah, don't keep it in hands reach.
Keep it where people won't think of.
Do not put it in your freezer.
Do not put it in places that if your house is broken into,
that the burglars are going to think to look.
I mean, that is a big one.
Do not put it where other people can find it.
I'm not saying that your house is going to get broken into,
but sometimes the people you think are closest,
there's sometimes the disease.
I hate to say that,
but I've known people who thought someone was a person who trusted them
to come in and clear them out of their extra money that they had hidden.
So don't, not all people are bad,
but it's better just to hide it anyways.
just to be on the safe side.
I'm sorry, all, if you hear me scratching or fiddling with my headphones.
I actually had a bug just bite me.
Okay.
But I would put the money in an envelope, whether it be just a couple ones, whether it be a 10,
whether it be a 20, whatever it would be, and I'd put it in an envelope and have that envelope
hidden and put it up.
And then I'd have an envelope out of the open for whatever our goal was, and then put that
envelope back up where it needed to go.
And then that way we could build up money for both an emergency,
for what we want it, or just to have extra,
because you don't want to be caught without cash on you,
whether now or if something should happen and a grid down,
cash is going to be the value of use,
especially for the first few days, if not for the first, yeah,
probably week maybe, just depending on where you're at.
All right, so T-Man, so it's my memory.
As is as long as yesterday.
If I hide money, it will be a surprise much later.
You know, I have done that once.
And only once.
And it was nice.
It was nice to find 10 bucks hidden somewhere I wasn't expected.
Expecting.
Keep your coins.
That is another thing that drives me nuts.
And yes, I am that person.
If I see change on the ground, I pick it up.
I have a change jar.
We do turn it in after a while.
There is no shame in keeping change.
any means. If anything, I see money being thrown away, it just makes my blood, oh, makes me feel awful.
Yes, as Highlander said, Uncle Eddie on Lampoons, buries it in coffee cans in the backyard.
Everybody has their own thing. And you know what? You don't have to say it. I don't need to know.
If it works for you and you can remember or at least have an idea where it is, it will take you
much further, I will say that I have, or had a lady of my life, very good woman.
Funny and fickle is all get out.
She was notorious for hiding money in the least expected places.
You thought that old lamp was broken and someone went to go clean out the house.
And she threw a fit because the old broken lamp shades were gone in the lamp.
They were sitting out on the curb, thank goodness, the trash hand came.
And she was from the Great Depression, I mean, very much lived through it.
And they brought in the lamp.
And underneath, even though it was broken, she took off the bottom, and there was several dollars hidden in that lamp along with 20s, just loose money.
And in the blinds, in the very bottom, the very old ones, where you have that tube that went across, she took,
a dow and she had
a dow actually inserted in both
in and she took the dow and pushed it all
the way through and she had 20s
rolled up all the way in it.
So it just goes to show you, you know,
this woman was notorious for
hiding it. So
she's kind of a goal for
me. I don't want to have anything
potentially thrown away, but she'd put
it in stuff that you would have never
thought of. Things that you didn't
realize
were the way they were. That lamp
was broken, but she knew it was. So it was the perfect place for her to twist off the top
adapter and then hide money in. So, I mean, it was wonderful. So Melinda Lee in here. So she hides
her jewelry and her coach first. Problem is she forget where she hides it, and then when she
wants it, she has to search for a while. I have done that one or two things. Okay, so here's a good
piece of advice that I was actually about to get to and good tips. Flying Dutchman says
himself. He went to the store one day and forgot his wallet. And even after that, and ever
since that, he keeps a 20 on the virus or mirror. I actually try to keep a minimum of $20 hidden
somewhere in my vehicle, so goodness forbid should I get caught in a situation where I've run out
of gas or I forget my wallet, I have money on me no matter what, because we've all had those days
where we have run out the house in such a hurry that we've forgotten something, if not everything,
it seems like. And the last thing you want to do is be caught out of town with no money or no way to
eat or no, no anything. I mean, it could really hurt you. Um, um, um, so, okay, so Highlander says he hides
his in the back of his toilet, right? Were you the one who said, do you hit it in the lid? Oh, no,
that was so on. He says, waterproof Ziploc back in the back of the toilet tank bowl,
bag. So make sure your money is waterproof. Oh my goodness. Actually, actually.
I'm going to get off subject for a second, but it is kind of there.
I heard of a story of a gentleman who was much older and he grew up in the Great Depression
and he had money.
He never put any of his money in a bank, but he dug a hole in the backyard and he buried his cash, right?
Well, when he went to go back to pick it up, here's the problem.
He buried his money in a paper bag, all of it, all of his money.
Every time he buried it, he buried it in a paper bag.
so you can guess what happened.
The money and the bags all work for the ailments and degraded and destroyed.
So if you're going to bury your money, if you're going to hide your money,
you're going to put your money anywhere.
Make sure it's safe from the elements.
Make sure it's safe from being tore up or shredded or breakdown because of the elements.
Okay, so here we go.
Here's another prime thing.
Melinda Lee says when she leaves the house, she hides her laptop, hard drive,
That's actually really smart.
So these are things you want to think about.
And it's not just for money.
It's for everything.
I lost my spot for a second.
I'm sorry, y'all.
So money is a big factor.
If you can try to manage yourself to have just $10, $20 put up, that's great.
Also, don't leave yourself without anything because we all know emergencies or last
minute things come up or you forgot.
something and you have to take care of it you know manage to what works reasonably for you
what works for my house and the amounts may not be what works for your house or for the neighbor next door
everybody has their own way they need to do things all right so highlander says i also keep a
bunch of silver dollars and 50 cents pieces i've always heard if you've had silver at least one silver
dollar you were never broke i actually have um i actually have one silver dollar
pretty certain. I'm not sure if I have two or not anymore.
But yeah, silver pieces can really help you out in a bind
in any situation, especially in the future
for a down situation. That's something people want to think of.
I am going to... I think I'm going to go ahead
and let G-Man take us to a commercial break, and then when we get back,
we will actually talk about the grocery part
and the more of the bugout item part.
All right, Cheaman, if you want, go ahead and take us away.

If you would like to come live on air with me or you have a question or a comment you'd like to make,
go ahead and hit the number one.
I'd love to have you.
All right, we are talking about buying on a budget.
We have mentioned making a list, the importance of trying to keep cash on you,
even a little bit trying to put up in the fact that hiding your money,
keeping a little bit of cash out and hiding it,
is not going to hurt you, if anything.
Again, I have no problem with banks,
but in a grit-down situation, electronic money is useless.
It is just a bunch of zeros and ones in a system that may no longer work.
Okay, so we are going to actually talk about the grocery part of it
and being able to buy preps and being able to buy prets
that are more affordable for someone like you and me,
or especially individuals who have children,
or, you know what, just anybody.
You want to come to sit with me?
All right, did Daddy say no?
You can have a chip.
In just a minute, okay?
You're letting the mosquitoes in the house.
All right, sorry about that.
We have a fussy three-year-old
who may or may not be joining me at the moment.
Would you like to draw a picture for me?
No pictures.
Okay.
all right sorry about that um
so on the budget part so if anybody else
notices the cost you have to wait just a moment
I know
oh so she's not all right you know I am so sorry y'all
I'm going to take just a brief minute of air
I'm going to give her her snack because she is fighting sleep
and just a second I'm so sorry I am so sorry
about that.
I believe my husband may have fallen asleep on the couch.
So the little ones need a snack.
All right, back to it.
So if anybody's noticed, the price of food itself has actually increased quite a bit.
If you shop at Walmart, croakers, pickly, wiggly, night, or good nights now as some of them.
What is, you know, they're price shoppers.
save a lot.
I mean, we have all sorts of stores that anybody shopped at.
Walmart's a big one.
A lot of people go to.
And believe it or not, there's quite a few things you can buy there,
as well as, like, first aid prep that you can get cheaper
than if you went to the dollar tree.
But I noticed, and I actually threw a little bit of a connoption fit,
because I manage, which is still a high amount,
anywhere from 60, which it's tight, but I can make it work,
to $120 a week.
for up to six people, and that's including breakfast, lunch, and seven days worth of meals.
So you can imagine my upset when I went into a store, and I noticed that everything, literally,
everything's hiked up from 10 to 50 cents. Now, I threw a fit as it was as soon as summer hit.
The price Nathan Hotdocks used to be cheaper than ballpark, and that's what the kids prefer, and it
went up a good, good almost dollar something.
The kids almond milk went up a dollar, a dollar and 20 cents, I believe.
And it makes it, it makes it hard.
So I'm going to, what I'm going to mention for anybody who really has to budget,
there is no shame in having to shop at two or three stores.
I understand it's more convenient to go to one than the other.
But, but if you can actually make a big save, there is nothing wrong with it.
I actually shop in a town where we have a Kroger, Piggly, Wigley, and Walmart.
Pretty convenient.
And, um, an area.
Yes, Highlander says he goes between Aldi and Kroger's.
Uh, there's actually several things I will not buy from Aldi's because it's not
near as cheap as they make it seem.
I literally nickel and dime everything.
I have a shopping cart calculators that I use.
I can add my taxes at the end so I can add it up and see what percentage of tax I've actually
Pigley Wiggly is great.
I actually bought a 20-pound bag of potatoes for $7.
And in my house, that goes a long way.
When I'm buying a 10-pound bag every week, it seems like I go through the large 60-count
or six dozen, yeah, 60-count eggs pretty quickly within a week to a week and a half with six people.
We do a lot of home-cooked meals, which that is going to save you.
I understand a quick meal or a prefab meal is a matter of convenience, but when you look at it, it's not as far as a matter of cost.
Now, I'm not down in you if you're able to, by all means, go for it.
It's not reasonable for our household with the way that we eat.
We have growing children.
We have a big adult.
You know, we all eat, and we eat a lot.
So I've learned to double, if not triple certain recipes.
It extends the life of them.
I will have leftovers.
Now, we do not necessarily eat leftovers a second of night in a row.
But if we do not eat it the next night, we will put it up and freeze it.
So then there is a future extra meal.
No shame in that, no harm in that.
Actually, if anybody listens to the Gun Metal Armour Show or follows them on Facebook,
the mistress of metal had posted a picture of Walmart with the sales down, which it is.
It is usually down around last, it was last month for us towards the beginning of last month.
I believe it's right now for Arizona.
I'm not sure.
It's just based on your region.
So keep an eye out.
But they will go through where they are changing out, their inventory.
And when they're changing out their inventory, they have to mark everything down to get anything that could be on the shelf.
past what they're allotted or allowed off as quickly as possible.
So keep an eye on that because there's no shame at looking at the cell rack,
at the clearance rack, by any means.
I actually was able to stock up, and we don't buy name brand except on a few things.
If you don't have to have name brand, there's no point in it.
We stocked up, I stocked up on a bunch of canned suits and vegetables for 25 cents a can.
you know, with the way prices are, you save where you can, stock up where you can.
I was able to buy the big soups or the big cans of soups for, really 75 cents versus a dollar
18 before the price had gone up.
So that makes a huge difference.
The big cans of vegetables in our house, we don't use one can of vegetables.
We have to use two.
It's cheaper first to buy the big can.
I was able to get several big cans for 25 to 50 cents a can.
So, I mean, think about it.
If you're able to keep an eye out on your store and look at the sales, because that could make a huge difference.
So I do a lot of price comparisons.
Walmart has done away with price matching.
So they do have a app called the Savings app, I can pull it up, in which you can actually scan your receipts with them.
If they find a lower price, they'll give you a certain penny or a certain way.
whatever the difference was for the item, which that can add up.
It can help you in a bind.
I've noticed lately since they quit doing price matches, it really doesn't show as much as it used to.
I don't know if that's because of how the prices have changed so much.
All right.
So someone in the chat says, I do keto diet.
I only eat once or twice a day.
I do not eat bread, pasta, milk, junk food, so I spend a lot less.
so someone else says
I haven't been to
Panera for a few years
I was out the other day
running errands and I didn't have time to go home
and cook before going to work so I stopped at
Panera as a treat to myself
mistake I ordered
a half a sandwich in Chai Lassay
and it was 1098 the sandwich was
tiny and not good I should have gone
home and just made a ham sandwich and that right
there will show you if you
notice versus going out how much
you spend it really really
makes, it can really impact you big time.
Okay, so like G-Man says, meat is a big one.
I watch and buy big and freeze when on sale.
We are big about that, too, G-Man.
I will admit, I will not buy my chicken from
Pickly Wiggly, not because it's not good,
but you've got to pay attention to how some of these places
or butcher shops cut their meat.
All they literally do is take one breast and butterfly
and put two breasts in there, so you look like,
you have four. So pay attention to how much you're getting per actual dollar. If it's worth it,
then fine. But for my household, I need to be able to get as much as I can for as little bit as
possible with my household. Five dollars old ceasers will feed me for two days. E.K. is on her own.
Michael Klein. That's great. But you need actual food. In our house, we like full meal.
We have a meat, we have a vegetable, but sometimes two.
It just all depends.
Tonight we had grilled chicken and a salad and a baked potato.
So we want to know we're a fool.
And that's another thing.
With the buying, with the planning, map out your meals for the week.
I know it sounds like such a mess and oh, we don't have the time.
But I promise you, if you map out the meals for the entire week before you go shopping,
then you know exactly what it is you have to buy.
Know exactly what your snacks are or what you have in the house for the children if they're little, what they're like.
You do not have to buy a name brand.
I buy GV or generic applesauce.
No sugar at it.
Sugar-free.
Kids love it.
If you're able to, one week we are tighter than the next week.
So one week I have to really manage it on the bare minimum.
On the next week, I'm able to buy and stock up on a few extra.
So then the following week when it's tight, I don't have to worry about it.
And so this is where my advice is going to come to you.
I'm micromanaged.
I could tell you before the price has changed what everything cost to the exact sense.
But that's because of how I shop.
And I am very strict on my shop.
And I keep a list.
I stick to the list and try not to change from it unless I absolutely have to.
So for those who don't like to now, I am sorry.
but look at being able to stock and store extra little cans of shelf-space food.
I promise you, it may not seem like much now, but it does add up that I've actually had to go to a second counter space,
and it will go a long way.
And it's exactly right.
Tuna, believe it or not, you're better off buying the small individual cans.
Right now it is way too high at Provers for us.
Pickly-wiggly still higher.
So Walmart's my best bet.
So I look at the prices of something.
I know I'm going to buy every time and I compare them.
And if it's worth my buy, it's somewhere else, then that's where I'm going to go.
But try to keep so say you have six items you have to get from another store.
Well, make sure on that list, that's what you get at the other store.
It's still budget and manage everything as well as you can.
But cans of tuna can go a long way.
I will buy several small cans of tuna.
So I believe it is an eight-pack they have at Walmart, a prepack,
and then they have the large can.
Believe it or not, you are going to save when I've had it before.
With the big can, you actually saving a few cents more.
If you buy just multiples of the smaller cans, it doesn't add up.
On the big cans, you're actually saving almost a dollar and something more.
Yes, it may not seem like much now, but I promise you on someone who, especially like for us,
we have to manage every single dollar.
Buy few extra cans of tuna.
Buy few extra cans of vegetable soup.
buy if you can't beans or whatever you can fit into the house.
In our house, believe we're not pasta or rice and beans,
I will pick up a bag, one, two-pound bag, dependent.
I will divide it up.
I will vacuum feel it.
That will go a long way.
And yes, it adds up quick, but in a tight situation,
or if say you're hard on money one week,
guess what?
You bought how much sliced smoked ham or cured ham,
cured ham and you had it put up and you have pinto beans you've got a whole meal pinto beans and
pinto beans and ham you got cornmeal in the cabinet and then the egg guess what you've got
cornbread so these things even though you're looking for future press you've also looking at
future meals because in a tight situation you still want to be able to feature some family something
and you want to be able to feed them something that's going to keep them full and keep them feeling
satisfied and happy and warm bellies make happy children warm and full bellies make happy
husbands, I promise you.
My husband is very happy with the food we cook.
And a home meal can go a long way.
And especially in a grit-down situation or in a situation you don't want to be in,
a home-cooked meal can really be a difference between feeling comfort and still being scared.
Melinda Lee says, I try not to eat that much.
It makes it too scared to think who is cooking my food and I like my food better.
That is exactly true.
If y'all listened to my last week's show with rats and roaches and mice, the fact that there's so many of them actually in the food industry, it really creeps you out.
And prime example, I think I mentioned it last show, is I actually was drinking out of a cup.
My work bought us food that week.
And I drank some sweet tea.
And I went and I got seconds.
And I was down towards the end of my cup.
And I wanted to throw it away.
and I didn't want to leave.
What, baby?
Okay.
See, Sissy will share some chips and then I'll make you some.
Okay.
All right.
So I was getting down towards the end of my cup,
and when I look in there, there was a floating silverfish.
And if anyone's seen silverfish, they like to hang around sinks or bathrooms,
and they eat paper products.
It will stay around cloth and stuff that they can break down,
like paper, cloth, toilet paper, cups, any of those paper cups.
and I was absolutely disgusting.
And I'm like, I don't like eating out for that reason
because you never know what you're going to find in your food.
Exactly.
It was gross.
I felt sick to my stomach.
And, of course, everybody else could laugh,
but I'm sitting there thinking they were drinking out of the same types of the tips I was.
I just got lucky and got found mine in mine.
There's no telling if they actually drank theirs.
Oh, sorry, I'm okay.
But, yes, a home-cooked meal can have a lot of benefits.
look where it's going to be best for you to buy your meat.
Get as much as you can for a good amount.
Listen to some of the butchers.
Some of the butchers, like Progars, will actually give you some very honest answers.
Take advantage of coupons.
There's a lot of electronic coupons you can add to your card with Progers.
You know, Piggly Wiggly has some specials that they go on.
Keep an eye out on these ads.
Yes, it seems like extra work, but I promise you, a little bit of extra work can actually save you a lot.
in the long run. So how does this go towards prep? So any extra money you save towards prep
or save period, you can use towards preps. I encounter actually prepping for me is part of my
everyday life. So Michael Klein yesterday was speaking on going to the bathroom and we mentioned
toilet paper and that is a big one. So if anybody's noticed, the price of just a piece of paper
to wipe your butt with has gotten ridiculous. It is super super high.
And I normally buy Angel Sox, but I live in a town where we have a Dollar General or a Fred.
Fred's is not within reason on certain prices.
I'm not saying they're not a good chain, but, right, as Highlander said, money down the drain, literally.
I actually went through our Dollar General, and I am one of those I do count what the rows are.
So if it's a double row, how many of we're getting, believe it or not, the Dollar General brand had a 32 double row.
row, which is equivalent to 64, for $10.
And that was actually a lot cheaper than trying to buy a 24 row tag for $10.
So, you know, when I can, especially in the household we have, if we have a little extra,
guess what?
I'm buying an extra pay.
Yes, Michael Klein.
Personal washcloth, that works too.
But as my toilet paper is our preferred dues.
my husband actually is a fan of paper towels which drives me absolutely nuts i am a fan of cloth napkins
or in a tight bind washcloth as napkins i grew up wanting linen he grew up liking paper towels
so at the moment we do still get paper towels but there is no point in buying name brand when
you're going to wipe your face or wipe up a spill and throw it right away there is just no um
Yes, Melinda Lee, I look at how many feet is in the package, exactly.
And that is the deal with how much you're going to actually spend for something you're just going to use and throw away.
Complain.
When you get something bad or poor quality, get online, complain in the manufacture they will often send you a coupon system apology.
That is true.
Usually, though, if I call a manufacturer, it's because I've found something in it that I do not want.
So then when they send me coupons for their same products, I am very leery.
but yeah, sometimes they will send you coupons because they don't want to lose a cell.
They don't want to lose potential money because someone like you or me could with one bad visit could be pretty,
I don't necessarily want to use the word, but could be, could really hurt them.
But yeah, so toll of paper, don't hesitate to stack up on toll paper.
for Klein say, don't hesitate to have plenty of washcloths because in any situation,
you're going to need these for whatever use you use them for. So that's a big one.
I actually, every now and then, you know, I stock up bandana. I buy a few extra packs of
Band-Aids. I buy some triple antibiotic cream. You can get those at Walmart for 88 cents
and they have the little cheapy. They have a little bin usually on the end or in the first aid where you can get certain
things for 88 cents versus paying a dollar or more for them.
Now, I'm not saying Dollar Tree is bad because I go there for toothpaste.
Because it's so much cheaper to buy everybody's toothpaste at Dollar Tree,
and you can stock up on dental hygiene material a lot cheaper than you can anywhere else.
So look at what's going to be more cost effective.
Highlanders actually mentioned the other day Big Lots.
If you're a fan of Big Lots or you have one near you, just look what's around you.
price shop first.
So if that means taking an afternoon and just walking around and looking at prices,
you know what, so be it, do it.
A lot of people will actually shop in one place because it's a matter of convenience
versus a matter of actually saving money.
That sometimes is the biggest no-no when you find out later.
The store maybe not even two minutes down the street was selling something for half that price,
especially when it comes to groceries.
You want to be able to get as much as possible on as little as possible, and that is a big deal.
Threaten people with social media, go to store, get now.
My book line, I don't know how much that works.
Usually it makes the person look worse than the actual apology.
I mean, actual complaining.
Aha, gee man, you could go on the radio and destroy them.
I'm not going to try to destroy anyone.
I do not agree with all the prices, but that is because I am a working mother of three.
My husband and I are both working, and it is difficult as it is to make ends meet.
So trying to buy food that has gone up because employers, obviously, are not going to go up on our pay wages.
It does make it harder.
So it's just working within your means possible.
Go to a farmer's auctions and buy produce and bulk to preserve.
Melendalee, that is great.
So that is another reason we garden.
We garden to save.
We, it's both season right now.
It's primitive.
I have not gone out.
I probably won't get to, at the moment, I'll have to probably wait to a rifle because
it's almost a little too hot.
You want your meat to be able to drain.
But, you know, that's where we kill our meat.
We will put up.
We will have it processed.
I am actually going to be canning some soups this fall.
I will be canned in chicken.
I mean, if you're able to can and put up as much food as you are,
possible. Our tomatoes we put up. It's great for putting in suits, stews, lasagna, spaghetti,
anything you can think of. Much cheaper if you don't get a good harvest from your garden.
That is absolutely true. If it hadn't been from my mother-in-law's garden, which we split between
both houses. We actually share everything. We probably would not have had squash this year
because our squash didn't take, but hers did. Tomatoes. Ours didn't do, but hers did. You know,
Our bell peppers took off like crazy, so we were able to share between two households.
If you're able to do that, share, barter trade, you know.
It's great if you're able to.
Or if you want something that you don't have in your garden like sweet corn.
Yes, sweet corn is another great one that we love to, love to shuck, get off the water from it,
and make skillet corn, and put those up.
If you're able to can, can, can, learn.
Believe it or not, canning can say.
you so much money right there. Yes, you are going to initially spend quite a bit your first year.
After that, it's going to be maintenance cost of extra lids, extra covers. But it really is worth it
in the long run. That's where making an investment that's going to pay for itself in the future
is worth it. Look at what the cost is, what the benefit is, and what the losses. If you have to
worry about whether or not something's going to work for you, then sit down and write it out or work
it out. Because for us, Canon was worth the extra cost.
We really have saved us within the last year, last three years starting.
It really saved us a lot of money.
I find that I'm not spending as much there when we kill deer or have any extra meat that I've
helped slaughter.
We have, I don't have to buy that type of meat.
If I have deer in the freezer, I will not buy beef.
Absolutely will not buy beef.
I do not like store beef.
But it is, you know, do what's good for you.
It also supports your local farmer by buying at farmer's auctions.
You're absolutely right.
Support the small businessmen.
Support your locals because they're trying just like you are.
And believe it or not, it's going to go a longer way knowing that you helped.
Yeah, instead of supporting a big corporate grocery stores, it really is.
And sometimes on that one, yes, you may spend a little more as far as like meat from a local farmer, local butcher.
But you're going to be looking at quality.
And quality is a big thing, knowing that your family.
is eating something and it does taste better like melinda lee said oh like right now there is a huge
recall on beef with many stores including walmart because of salmonella more and more if you've
noticed more food more items are having more issues uh goldfish is a few months back we're recalled
i don't get my kids goldfishes anyway we try to minimize our processed foods but but you know that
that is something you've got to worry about is what are you putting in your child or your family that
could potentially make them sick or be harmful.
So while we're getting to the last few minutes, I'm going to actually mention, if anyone
actually follows my Facebook or my Twitter or my Instagram, which I have them listed in
my description page on prepperbroadcasting.com, check them out.
I share some of the stuff we do, and I've actually saved up a little bit of money, and I was
able to find some horseradish.
and I have made a fire cider.
I'm actually here in a few minutes going to be finishing up my elderberry syrup on top of the one that I was given by migrae, which is amazing.
It makes you feel great, makes you feel better, great for a cold.
But that is something like that.
If it's something that can help boost your immune system, you don't have to worry.
I mean, these are things to think about it, you know, through what we have, through organic food.
You know, it's great.
I'm looking forward.
On Halloween, it'll actually be ready.
So the show after Halloween, I will be able to tell you all how it actually turned out.
And I'm looking forward to it because it looks great.
It smells great.
So right now, though, it's sitting at the steeping point.
So in about four weeks, at the minimum, on Halloween, it should be ready.
So we will find out then.
So look into ways that you can treat your family.
Melinda Lee said, I made fire standard last year.
It was God-awful tasting.
It has to kill the germs if it tastes drinking it doesn't kill me.
Melinda Lee, you know, you base it on preference.
This will be the first time I've done it this way.
I did put turmeric in mine.
I actually have some astragulus coming in.
I'm going to make another batch with astragulus.
I am curious to see how it will turn out.
So we will see there.
I hope I've been able to actually give y'all some.
advice as far as what to consider if you're going to sit down and budget, what to consider
when you go to buy your food, and what to consider if you're trying to put money away for a
prep.
I know it wasn't much detail, but you've got a long way to go.
You might as well start with something small and keep it simple.
How long will it last in the fridge?
I'm not sure.
I know that once you've strained it out, it should last a while.
Melinda Lee, let me look into that, and I will actually shoot you an email, and I can tell
you for sure. Apple juice and moonsh? Michael Klein. We want something that's good for the kids.
But all right. Yes, Barking Dog is they're playing in the backyard. So if you can hear them,
I'm sorry. All right. Well, I want to thank everybody for coming. If you have any questions,
any tips, so advise, feel free to shoot me email. Hit me up on our social media. I would love to
hear from you. I hope everybody has a great weekend. I hope I was able to help you out
any way as possible, and I can't wait, and I will talk to y'all next weekend.
