Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome back to the Changing Earth Podcast with author Sarah F. Hathaway and co-host Chen Gibson. Blending survival fiction and fact to bring you entertaining education that will help you dream, survive, and thrive. And now, here's your hosts, Sarah F. Hathaway and Chen Gibson. Hello and welcome back to the Changing Earth podcast. This is episode number 424. Hope you enjoyed the binge season three, part two. Good news is part three is coming really, really soon. I'm going to be able to air it during the holiday season. So, you know, nothing says holidays like the changing earth. So special show tonight.
Starting point is 00:00:55 We've got the leadership of the crew here. Mr. Lee wasn't feeling very good. He was having some stomach issues. So we don't have Mr. Lee here, but we got Phil who plays Virgis. Hey, Phil. Oh, that was my cue. Hey, everybody. We've got his lovely bride, Gillian, with us.
Starting point is 00:01:16 She plays Teresa. Hello, everybody. I would call that like the female leadership of TJ's life. So that's why I was like, oh, okay, I can work on it, right? We got TJ Swenson, of course, in the house. What's up, Doug? Hello there. Pulling the Swenson voice out.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Hello, woman. Oh, my gosh. You guys wait for the bloopers. Like, how many times do I have to say TJ's name? You better not embarrass me or you'll be chasing Sheila. Oh, and I got him Sheila at Prepper Camp. And then we've got Jordan in the house plays Cassidy. Cassidy is our Western militia leader.
Starting point is 00:02:02 So hey, what is going on? I was almost like, hey like hey cassidy what's up hey yeah we don't really like each other in the story right now i mean it's not like it was my fault or anything but you know you know how it goes yeah i'll kill you if i see you right like it's not very nice i'm just saying right. So we got Garden Girl in the chat room. We're looking forward to holidays here. And so I just wanted to do like a quick catch up of what you guys are working on, where you guys are at. Doug, I want to start with you because you recently failed retirement.
Starting point is 00:02:40 So why don't you go ahead and do that story. Susie Homemaker. I retired for a little bit, for about a month and a half. September 1st, I was retired effectively. I came home every day, and I watched my wife get up and go to work, and she was busting her ass every day at work. And I was busting my ass when I was at home. The sad part was what was hard on me is I'd get up with her and watch her leave to work, and I'd stay home. You know, I'd clean the house.
Starting point is 00:03:08 I'd do the dishes. I'd do the laundry. I'd clean the floor. I'd dust. I did all of it. And then I'd go outside. I'd mow the yard. I'd fell trees.
Starting point is 00:03:15 I'd log them. I was doing everything, but I still felt like a dirty POS because my wife was going to work, and I was staying home. That lasted about a month and a half. It sounded like you were the sad puppy. I was i was i mean i just didn't feel right i felt off and uh and so finally i decided to go back to my uh my roots because i've never had a normal job anybody knows me knows i've never worked a normal job my life uh between policing and maximum security work so i went and got a job with the local police department. Back in uniform. Back in uniform, carrying the badge again.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Which I have to say, you don't look too bad in uniform. So, you know. Thank you very much, ladies. I'm taken. And then also I got a job with SIR Investigations and Security, doing armed security at a police, not a police department, at a hospital. And they do require, it just, I guess it's on a mandate, but they prefer police officers because it just cuts through a lot of red tape real fast. They don't have to go through all the
Starting point is 00:04:15 rigmarole of getting them prepped to carry firearms in a hospital. So that's what I've been doing for the past month is catching up on my recertifications and getting back up to par and patrolling. Back up to speed. Oh, man. And security. As long as you've got time to still do TJ's lines, we're okay with that. I'm part-time at both jobs, so I only sign up for what I want to work. So when I know TJ lines are coming, I take some time off and I'll do those lines for you, girly.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Yes. Thank you. Well, we'll have to see the words that Erica has for TJ later on. Super excited to hear from her. Yeah. They're coming. They're coming, guys. I just finished up.
Starting point is 00:04:56 I'm just editing. So, Phil, Gil, what you got going on? You guys got an awesome new show. My listeners probably don't know well the pbn listeners obviously but yeah the pbn listeners will know but uh what was it about six months ago now maybe a bit more we started in march whatever that is we just found out episode 33 so we started lies so you know i've been doing matter of facts with andrew bobo for seven years and some change now we've been talking about like preparedness survival firearms like everything in that vein
Starting point is 00:05:31 and for a while now gillian had been kicking around the idea of like she kind of she i don't think she was dead set on podcasting but she wanted to break into something creative to kind of talk about things that were on her mind and And I finally, I just encouraged her. I'm like, look, I've already got like all the recording gear, all the, the it backbone, I've got everything done already to springboard you into podcasting. And I can make one phone call and get you on PBN if you really want to get on it. So just do you want to do that? So we started doing a new podcast called raising values between the two of us. And we talk about things like things affecting marriage, things affecting relationships, child raising, kind of the, it became kind of an interesting little.
Starting point is 00:06:15 It became a therapy session for me is really what it was because that is awesome. Yeah, we pull from our childhood and how we've changed, how we parent our child compared to what our parents did. So yeah, it's been eight months. So Raising Values has been going on for eight months. Yeah, and it's become an interesting little counterpoint to MatterFacts because, like I said, MatterF facts has really been focused on physical threats to the family and even financial because of my background and i feel like raising values just kind of take up the mantle of like these are the things that could disrupt the family spiritually these are the things that could disrupt the the union between husband and wife or disturb the relationship between parent and child so like i feel like the two podcasts really go together really well,
Starting point is 00:07:06 but it really has turned into two sides of the coin because Gillian's been on Matter of Fact several times talking about preparedness. And now we have this new element that I feel like speaks to a different part of people that are in the vein of wanting to take care of their families because that's the reason most of us got into preparedness in the first place. I really enjoyed it.
Starting point is 00:07:26 The episodes I have listened to, I don't have a lot of time. I spend a lot of time doing audio work, obviously. I know. The episodes that I've listened to have been really fantastic. I was like, way to go, guys. I use sparring with my husband
Starting point is 00:07:41 as our therapy session. Talking, I guess, works too. I don't know. I don't think she wants to get in the ring with me. There's a couple of times where I just want to punch him in his throat, but is that sparring so much?
Starting point is 00:07:57 That's why he throws the beer down. I'm joking. Kind of joking. Wink, wink. Don't make me Kind of joking. Kind of joking. Wink, wink. Wink, wink. Nice, nice. Don't make me pick you up and shake you around. So, Jordan, you just finished off a big drive today.
Starting point is 00:08:17 You're out seeing Mama, right? Yeah, I spent Thanksgiving back in Arkansas with all four of my little ones and my family and i tell you what we gotta love family uh i yeah yeah you just have to like therapy session on raising values right yeah that wasn't convincing i i could give someone ptsd with my life so don't take no time for the tj swenson therapy session i think i'm familiar with that one right on no the the biggest the biggest party foul I made the whole time I forgot to bring my yarn and my crochet hook which is my therapy so I didn't have anything to work on yep yeah then
Starting point is 00:09:14 you can like sit there and work on a project instead of having to you know I mean just partial engage yeah that was one of the nicest things about moving like 1800 miles away from the majority of my family was I was like, okay, I need a break. Sarah needs a recoup from the family. So, all right, I got somebody else is with us that you guys she's hiding behind the scenes. JB Jasmine is with us. And I want to say hi to Jasmine and turn on your mic and say hello, Jasmine, because Jasmine really helps me out a lot with this show. So even though she's not a leader on the show per se, she is there in the background helping out. And it's so nice to have somebody helping me with the tech kind of thing.
Starting point is 00:10:01 So thank you very much, JB. I appreciate it. Yeah, no problem. So thank you very much, JB. I appreciate it. Yeah, no problem. And thank you for having me on today. Yeah, absolutely. Well, thank you for joining. Again, she's helped me. I'm like, we got tech stuff. So remember last time, well, Phil, you weren't here, but last time we did the bloopers episode, we couldn't hear the bloopers. We had to turn on our phones to be able to hear it. we couldn't hear the bloopers. We had to turn on our phones to be able to hear it. So,
Starting point is 00:10:25 um, um, yeah, so it was, uh, it was interesting trying to coordinate that tech. And then of course, uh,
Starting point is 00:10:34 JB is here to help me out today with it. So everything that you do, super appreciate everything you put into the show. It's such a help. No problem. Just happy to be here. And yeah, and you're actually doing like full on tech for prepper camp next year.
Starting point is 00:10:52 So congratulations for helping out a little bit more and doing everybody a solid and for everything you do, man, you're just, you're just heart and soul. Yeah, no problem. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:11:04 So, all right guys. Yeah, no problem. Thank you. So, all right, guys. We got season four coming. So much good stuff happening. And I know you're all excited for the holidays. Do you get excited for the holidays? Who actually gets excited for the holidays? I get excited for the
Starting point is 00:11:21 two weeks off. Like, tomorrow we start back at school and I'm just like, oh, just three and a half weeks. If I can just get through three and a half more weeks. Teach your life. Yeah. That's cool. Yeah, I'm actually looking forward to him this year. Like I found my faith a lot more this year than I ever have.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Came back to God in a big way. So it's just really special to be able to celebrate it. And I was not very into Halloween and whatnot. I didn't really want to do that whole scene. So I was like, I want to just throw myself into Christmas this year. And not about gifts, just about being with my family and enjoying my immediate immediate family i like a whole lot they're good people so i think that's always that's always been the draw for me though
Starting point is 00:12:12 because like you know gillian knows that i've had to because of military deployments and work i've had spent quite a few holidays away from family so my point of view is like for me it's less the celebration it's more about if i get to spend time with my wife and daughter that's fine that's all i wanted yeah i'm where i want to be yeah that's that's what it's all about and uh it's fun um you know fletcher's 23 now right and it's just so special to be able to have my family still all together um you know everyone's like oh your kid shouldn't be moving out or whatever and i'm like really should he be is that really necessary you know he helps us out a lot like financially and even around the house
Starting point is 00:12:58 he's such a man to be proud of like uh why would i do that, yeah, I'm looking forward to it. And, you know, just to get the honor to look at how much they help out with the show. You know, all the characters that they do and things like that. It's a special feeling. I really feel blessed this season to have all of you guys in my life, honestly. So thank you. Super big thanks for everything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:22 I'm getting all emotional. Oh, I'm getting the vapors. I'm getting the vapors. Stop it. I know. Alrighty. So my fun question for us all today is you, you guys can't do like a married thing either where you team up with your answer.
Starting point is 00:13:39 Yeah. Don't look at each other that way. So you find yourself in charge of a post-apocalyptic group. This is you as the individual, not necessarily the role that you are on the show, because we're going to do some questions that way as well. But you find yourself in charge of a post-apocalyptic group. And Phil, you really helped bring this to my mind. I'm sorry. Yeah, because you're like,
Starting point is 00:14:06 I'm going to be Captain Ahab, like going off. And I was like, oh, would he really be? I didn't think, I thought Phil was a pretty nice guy. I can be when I'm allowed to be. Right. So if you were in charge of your post-apocalyptic group, how are you going to run it? Let's start with Gillian. I'm interested. Yeah. Yeah, I know. I see you.
Starting point is 00:14:31 I see you. Yeah. Oh, how would I run it? Yeah. I would put Phil in charge. Is that your final answer? Are you sure you want that solution? We kind of did something like this on Matter of Facts a couple of weeks ago.
Starting point is 00:14:49 A while back. Yeah. In the patron group, we asked this question sort of. Like, what would you, in post-apocalyptic, what would you be? Who is your character? What would you do? And I responded back that I would be the hippie witch that's looking for herbs in the woods.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Yes. So that's going to be me. Yeah, bugs too. You'd be like, here guys, eat this. And mushrooms. Yeah, and mushrooms, all those things. I don't know. I think if I had to, if the position presented itself, I could lead pretty strongly. I mean, I have worked with high schoolers before, so that is kind of post-apocalyptic.
Starting point is 00:15:38 I would say that's qualifier. Yeah, thanks. Yeah, really. So I think the hardness that is buried deep inside me could come out. But I would also flitter through the woods and try to find soft, fuzzy animals to eat, whatever, to eat or to snuggle. I love it. All right, Phil, go ahead and rip it up i'm running i'm running like a military unit but and we've actually talked about we have talked about this not you and me but like we've talked about this on matter of facts more broadly and i'm going to default back to what i know which is military unit there's a person in charge.
Starting point is 00:16:25 There's a hierarchy. There's dissemination of duties. Everyone has a responsibility. If you don't live up to it, bad stuff starts to happen pretty quickly. But I think that's just the way I'm going to run a group. It's a system that works. It does kind of depend on a shared mission, post-apocalyptic we should all be able to agree the shared mission is keep ourselves alive so we should all be on the same page about that
Starting point is 00:16:49 pretty quickly but i i don't see my worry is when you get in situations where you're dealing with stress and adversity i think that purely democratic systems break down very quickly especially when you especially when like everybody gets a vote and not everybody has the background or the knowledge to use that vote effectively. So that's why I think that you need a person or even a small group of people who know what the hell they're doing, who can take charge of everybody else and say, you don't know what to do, that's fine. I'm going to tell you what to do so you can be part of the cohesive plan to keep us all alive. And for everybody that sounds like that is too simplistic, I mean, that's basically the way like every Native American tribe,
Starting point is 00:17:34 every primitive tribe, every group of, you know, like pre-industrialized hunter-gatherers, that's how they all worked. You had a tribal elder or you had a tribal council, you had a group of leaders, and those leaders gave orders out to everybody else. I mean, it's a system that works. I do have to say really quick, really, really quick. A couple of years ago, Sarah, we were sitting on the porch of my parents' house and all of my cousins and aunts are around and we started to go down this road of post-apocalyptic and who's going to get what job and my cousin's going to be digging ditches and blah blah blah and phil's role was and maybe you can write this into character somewhere this wasn't anything i picked either general rabba labba ding dong nice
Starting point is 00:18:19 i don't know maybe it'll work one day strong head strong loving it all right doug what do you got uh-oh after phil's i i don't know okay go for it now no no i'm not gonna one up for sure but i don't i have to agree since i was in the military and i have a lot of uh background in military stuff and law enforcement. There has to be structure and there has to be order. There has to be somebody in charge. That being said, there's no room for democracy. There's no room even for no politics whatsoever.
Starting point is 00:18:56 If you can't accept the fact that one person is making all the decisions, this ain't going to work. Because the second there's two people trying to make decisions, there's a split. There's a division in the group, and then there's going to be infighting. You're bipartisan. That's why Washington didn't want two parties. Well, yes. And so this is not national politics. On national political level, absolutely. This is a republic, right? We all have our individual rights and we're all, you know, everything's guaranteed through our constitution. That's not the case. You're talking state has sovereignty, Illinois is not going to Texas is taking their shit, you know, because each individual state has their own,
Starting point is 00:19:50 has the things that are not afforded in the bill of rights. For example, go to the individual individual states. Those kinds of politics cannot be in a survival group. And I hate to say it, but yeah, because of what feels right. I hate the word,
Starting point is 00:20:03 the T word. You know, it's, it's a form of T word. It's a form of tyranny. It's a form of tyranny or dictatorship. Probably the dictatorship would be a better way to say it. But it has to be, it's only a dictatorship if the person is taking control of the others and the others don't want to follow. In this type of a scenario, everybody has to agree. Phil's the shit. We've got to get behind Phil. We've got to back Phil. We're all down with Phil. Phil's in charge. If you don't like it, it, everybody has to agree. You know, Phil's the shit. We got to get behind Phil.
Starting point is 00:20:25 We got to back Phil. We're all down with Phil. Phil's in charge. If you don't like it, it's not going to work. You got to leave. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:32 Yeah. And, I mean, just to second that, I mean, you have to understand that, like, and Gil and I have talked about this at Raised Values. those are raised values like i i view that position of leadership much like i do like position of husband and father in a family like it's not a position of benefit it's not a position of luxury or leisure it's a position responsibility it means that you're the last one to eat the last one to go to bed the first one to wake up the first one to grab the heaviest load you're responsive i know i go to sleep faster than you that's's not my fault. That's because I'm at peace with myself. But I'm just saying like that position of leadership is a position of responsibility. And I, again, going back to the times I spent in the civilian world in management and the times I was in supervisor positions in the military, I really feel like if you are in that position and you don't let your subordinates see you loafing or screwing around like if you're truly if you make
Starting point is 00:21:31 it obvious through your actions i am here for the mission i'm here to take care of y'all i'm here to do the right thing i tend to think you'll get support amongst you know the men and women under your command but i do agree with doug there yeah you can use the word dictatorship you can use the word tyrant you can use whatever word you want but i'm gonna tell you that in a survival situation feelings votes and democracy all come second to make sure that everybody stays alive and it's in a in a survival situation well think about the situation gillian you and i had after hurricane ida trees on the house no water pressure no power there was zero time and no resources to spend bickering over nonsense it was i need you to do this i'm gonna go do this piper you get this and let's go to work
Starting point is 00:22:20 let's dig ourselves out of this hole so like the wildfire situation same way like there's no time to like decide what you're gonna do yeah you just literally have to be in motion yeah let me piggyback off him one more time because what he say about leadership and i wrote a lot about this in oath takers okay leadership leadership is very very important these kind of situations because what he's saying be the last last, you know, because you're going to, a good leader, people are going to follow. They're not going to have to manage a whole lot. People are just going to get behind them and follow them. But there's going to be people who think that you eating last and you doing this and you doing that, it's a form of weakness.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Those are the people who are going to try to take over. And those are the people that's got to go. All right, Jordan. What do you got? Crazy Jordan leadership. we are all following jordan now oh shit so i'm actually sorry i'm one of those i'm going to delegate roles you know what's their skill set what's their ability this is who has what this is who has what but you've also keep in mind okay so everybody's going to be
Starting point is 00:23:25 a part of a team right and i've actually discussed this with a friend she and i have gone through of who's going to be responsible for security um who's going to be sentries who's underneath that security head you know who reports to who um who's part of what and then even down to okay if we are going to let certain people in the group, they have to have some sort of skill set. So we need people to build, dig latrines or whatever, laundry keepers. But that is something where I feel like if you can't be trusted at all in a group, like if you seem like you are going to be a issue, you're out. you seem like you are going to be a issue, you're out. And I know that sounds seems harsh, but it really comes down to you've got to think about the viability of your group and what you're trying to because you're trying to survive, right? And all you don't need people who are going to steal food from other people, because they're desperate. Well, if they're desperate, then they're willing to do anything that could potentially hurt you, your loved ones, and everybody else. So it would come down to a hard decision of, I have no quarrels about saying, well, they're
Starting point is 00:24:30 not pulling their weight, they're not a contribution to the team, or this is going to sound horrible, but if they're flighty, in a sense, there's no point in having them. They'd probably go along the lines of like Doug and Phil of more of a militant concept and everybody has a role and those roles are their duties. I mean, everybody has to be employed and be a team player because unfortunately in hard times, there's no relaxing. I mean,
Starting point is 00:24:56 even during, during all of the chaos, you know, there's not going to be times to stop. Unfortunately, you can touch your breath when you go to sleep yep yeah that's that's pretty much where i go with it is like have your leaders of your essential items your medical your food your essential items that need to be done in the
Starting point is 00:25:17 backdrop and then you have your you i agree with boys you got to have your primary leader because you have to be agile in those moments when, you know, that person needs to be thinking about the good of the group and be able to make those decisions and make it happen. And then at the same time, though, like, have you guys seen the movie Falling Skies? It was like, or the TV series Falling Skies. And like, there was always that kind of, it's actually pretty good, Phil. You should check it out. There's always, there was kind of a division between like the civilians versus like the military leaders in that show.
Starting point is 00:25:54 And so it really made me think about that aspect of it. And so what you'd really need to do is, you know, because it wouldn't always be, we need to make agile decisions. We need to do this. But you need to make sure that all your essential items are being done. And they have a say in it and what's going on. You know, you've also got to consider, you know, if you're going to delegate, even if you're going to delegate, you know, who's, who's over medicine, who's over cooking, who's over whatever, you've still got to consider those people are going to be doing more than just their duties. Fair enough. Only because you've still got to consider those people are going to be doing more than just their duties
Starting point is 00:26:25 fair enough only because you've got spring summer fall winter you've got to make sure you keep people and you gotta be cross-trained you gotta prep right and cross right and because idle hands are the devil's playground i mean the last thing you need is people who get still in a hard time usually give up yeah yeah it's like that meme jordan that says just know that if you're friends with me i'm ranking you on your survival skills yeah pretty much yeah right yeah that is accurate learn learn learn learn learn that's what i just keep telling everybody you know learn because if you're up against an adversary, if you have the skills to bring, they're going to want you in the group.
Starting point is 00:27:09 Well, you know, it also that meme is perfect because if you think about it, not only am I ranking you on your survival skills, I'm also ranking it what your job duty will be. Yeah. And you don't want to drink the latrine. Yeah. you don't want to dig the latrine yeah yeah I mean I had a nurse years ago tell me she was going to show up to my door and I told her I didn't have anything waiting for her but a nine I said she goes well I'm a nurse I'm like I've got medical you'd have to dig a latrine if you want to earn your keep I'm like if you can't bring anything to the team don't bother coming dang now I want to know where i fit in on jordan's list i have a saying for moments like this i tell everybody if you were invited to come to my
Starting point is 00:27:50 house when the world ends you were it is because you already know have skills i need and you've already know to bring provisions and munitions don't come don't come to my house with no skills and no stuff because i've already got no skills and no stuff all over the place i need people that are coming to my group and enhance our total survivability yeah and see and that's what i've done with my friend we've discussed okay you know she's got certain things set up all right these are mandatory items that if we have to go to her i'm bringing this this and this along with this she knows how much is going to be in this stock and this stock and as far as the rest of the team like hers she is the center meeting point and every
Starting point is 00:28:30 person who is coming has things that they can contribute to the major pot or the whole for the group you know the for the whole group itself yeah okay let's jump into character roles now. All right. So from your character, and then Jordan, you don't have to do the refugee slave girl that you are for TJ's character. You can do Cassidy because, you know, I know you love the refugee slave girl so much, but, you know. I do. If that's what you want. Oh, thanks, Doug. Thank you, TJ. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:10 You're welcome, Julie. Jordan was definitely one. Like, how many times am I saying TJ? Yes, sir. I think William said the exact same thing. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I think it was yes, TJ. Every other word. Yes, sir. I think Gillian has said the exact same thing. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I think it was yes, TJ.
Starting point is 00:29:28 Every other word. Yes, TJ. He likes to hear his own name. He can't help it. Because you see with Gillian, like sometimes I'm hanging out in the room with her while she's recording her lines. Sometimes I just like, you know, hit the record button. She knows how to stop it. And I go walk off and do something else.
Starting point is 00:29:44 But it is hilarious to watch her beat herself up about, I have to say the same line 43 times in the season. But I have to say it different so it doesn't sound exactly the same. It's true. You did so good, though. I did the same thing. And Chris will sit there staring at me. And I'm like, don't look at me. I'm getting so frustrated.
Starting point is 00:30:04 I'm closing my eyes. I'm like, dang it, me i'm getting so frustrated i'm pulling my eyes i'm like dang it sarah yes dj yes dj yes is what makes it because there are times when her voice is like professional voice acting gillian but the look on her face is i swear to god if i say yes tj one, I'm going to fly across the country strangled. I feel your pain, Gillian. You'll feel pain, girly. Yeah, everybody's going out there at once. Oh, man. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:30:40 So, okay, preparedness tip given from your character's point of view. Have dinner ready before TJ gets home. Damn. Right out of the gate. You were prepared that, weren't you? I was just going to say, I swear. Did she get the questions beforehand? No.
Starting point is 00:31:02 Did she get a heads up? No, TJ. questions beforehand no no tj damn right you you should be actually feel very honored though she's like one of the only women it can be like tj just no no that's true so this is from Caitlin make sure you get yourself with a man of power the refugee girl all right we'll come back for Cassidy out that way yeah all right preparedness tip from Virgis I kind of feel and this is going to sound very Machiavellian but I kind of feel like what's going to be very important in a preparedness situation is always have a plan to deal with everybody in the room. Oh. Doug knows where I'm coming from being the former Marine.
Starting point is 00:31:57 Always have a plan to deal with everybody in the room. Deal with being a uniformed officer. deal with being a euphemism for I think for Cassidy it would be to to keep your head up your guns clean and keep oh shoot I had it in my head and I just got tongue tied
Starting point is 00:32:14 this is what happens when you run on two hours of sleep we'll go to Doug I have to we'll come back I want to hear it that was a good start just get behind me and do what you're told. That sounds like a TJ Swenson type of statement. Fair enough. It's as easy as that.
Starting point is 00:32:37 Mine's definitely along the lines of know how to wild forage. I'm with Gil on the wild foraging. That way you can always eat and fight for what you believe in. And that's Erica? Yep. Yep. That's my girl. Uncorruptible.
Starting point is 00:32:55 TJ, uncorruptible. Maybe I can't corrupt her, but I know someone who can. Sheila, get over here. Uncorruptible. You know, Cassidy would definitely be to keep your head up, keep your guns clean and your ammo ready. There you go. That would be... That would be total Cassidy.
Starting point is 00:33:15 That would be her baby face. Okay, out of what you have listened to, what is your, like, what moment for your character are you most proud of i'll come to you last gilead i see the look she's like uh-oh said i got dinner ready um you've got you've got that you've got don't give spoilers that's all i can say right now where we're at on it
Starting point is 00:33:48 so i don't want to give anything not where you've recorded through okay so where are we at so i can so we just finished um um erica met up with virgis vir Virgis finally caught up with them and Erica has the big battle. TJ just fished out the militia infestation in his nations. Jamie was a good big part of that.
Starting point is 00:34:18 He's going to keep Jamie around for a little bit. Use her for a little bit. And then Cassidy is you're still out west right now um you're about to do some favors for Virgis coming up oh sorry dang it don't ask the audience these things yeah I'm telling you I'm I'm making audio at a certain point of the story i'm writing a different part of the story right and then talking about a different part of the story so it just in the head shumbled in there yes yeah yeah so i have a part i'm thinking of i just hope
Starting point is 00:35:03 to god it's not a spoiler because I can't remember where I don't know where exactly I can't remember where it occurred type it so then that way in case it's a spoiler it won't be a total spoiler it's the point at which Verge loses one of his guys
Starting point is 00:35:18 that was simultaneous is that a spoiler? Sarah just gave me the thumbs up. I just couldn't remember where in the timeline it was. But, like, that was simultaneously, like, very, very difficult to record for me. Because, I mean, I am a military veteran, you know? I mean, it's, that is, like, one of the greatest fears anybody that's ever served has, is losing one of their people.
Starting point is 00:35:41 Especially somebody under their command. It's an intensely emotional moment to even just think when you lost chappy huh yeah and that's why i said one of his guys because i was like just in case this is a spoiler i'm at least not going to completely blow it that was very beginning of season three so um i lost that that vocal performer. So not like lost. Had to write him out. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, that's why he had to get the brain swelling from the fight with TJ's black shirt, sir.
Starting point is 00:36:15 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, like I said, it was hard to record. I'm not going to lie. Like, it took me a couple of takes to work my way through it. But, I mean, I hope that emotion came across. For me, as far as difficult recordings like that, you know, Daniel almost dies and then Vince almost dies. So those are both like you wouldn't know it from the bloopers because we keep it cheery.
Starting point is 00:36:42 But both of those were challenging, challenging moments. So, yeah, I don't know it from the bloopers because we keep it cheery, but both of those were challenging moments. Yeah. I don't know. I mean, I guess from my perspective, when you're doing something like voice acting, and I went through this exercise when I wrote the book that I wrote years ago. You end up, whether consciously or subconsciously, putting people you know into roles so that you think about how would I interact with this person versus this nameless, faceless character. So, yeah, I mean, I think it's very difficult to record anything like that or even to write anything like that without thinking about if this was my son or if this was my husband or if this was my something, how would that affect me? Like, it's impossible to go through that exercise and not let that creep in. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:31 Yeah, it is. I had to do that. I had to do that with my role, with the whole incident with Cassidy's dad. And I had to put myself in the mindset of, you know, my own personal loss or whatever, just to get emotional enough. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to kill him. But I mean, I asked her, can I take a little bit of liberties on? Yeah, sure. Within range. Okay. And I, I went off. I love liberties. I'm. I'm okay with liberties. So, okay, Doug, proudest Swenson moment.
Starting point is 00:38:13 Okay, so I've been thinking the whole time you guys are talking, I'm thinking about what is my proudest Swenson moment. Swenson, and it really boils down to what he's able to do, not really his one particular moment. I can't put my finger on it, so I'm just going to throw this out there as a blanket. Swenson's really, really good at getting his hands dirty. So I got to look at him and respect him
Starting point is 00:38:32 in the sense that he can both manage and be a leader in a sense that he's not afraid to get his hands dirty. He's not afraid to get in there and fight when the fight needs to be done, you know, and do things up front and show people that he's not willing to do something or up front and show people that he's not willing to do something or tell somebody to do something that he's not willing to do himself. So I'll say that kind of, you know, that's why I respect about Swinson.
Starting point is 00:38:53 And God, if I had to pick out one thing, he can freaking carve his initials with freaking Sheila, like it's nobody's business. Yeah, he gets to cursive eventually. Oh, are you kidding me? Well well it's a threat it's a threat yeah um my favorite erica scene um actually just happened like i know it really sucks for erica's character but um when she was everything's just at the breaking point with Vince. And she knows these guys are going to come kill her kids. And she just goes aggro, just goes out on the field and just kills them all. And, you know, she has a lot of really cool moments.
Starting point is 00:39:39 But that's one where it was just like, I don't care what I have to do. I'm going to save my kids. They are not going home in a box tonight and uh there's you know with my family there's nothing I wouldn't do for them so that's and that episode that scene was really fun to put together as well so I'm proud of it both because of my character and because of the um how the scene came out it was pretty cool so all righty well wait i think i do have mine it's not just dinner for tj all right that's a good one yeah i do think that um teresa's the character is really good at staying strong through really stressful situations and that a lot that TJ puts her through so
Starting point is 00:40:27 that's really true you're not an easy man to live with no I wouldn't put you through those things you weren't able to put up with it well I love the uh I love the one that was like uh you're not exactly chatty Kathy TJ and he like, small talk is useless unless you have something to say. Like, yeah, thank you for exactly proving my point. Like, it's never like, hey, how's it going? I really liked working with the Teresa character actually more. So she never has that big of a role in my books. But because I hadillian doing the role
Starting point is 00:41:06 you're doing so you know so spectacular with it um i wanted to make her like a bigger part of it so that's actually how her character and um a lot of times you have an idea of where you're going to go with the story and then it just evolves on its own like it just happens their story just changes on you and you're like oh well that just happened I wasn't planning on that but that you know and so um Teresa really took on that um you know that that mother role to him and that was something that's not really in the book so much um I mean it is is, but it's not as portrayed as the audio drama. So that was a great job, Gillian, on that role. Yeah, I know it's not an easy one. You rip it up. So I'm glad. I'm glad you like it.
Starting point is 00:41:57 Alrighty, are you guys ready for some bloopers? I think I even have some Phil and Gil bloopers. I think I even have some Phil and Gil bloopers that I actually found. Yeah. Because you guys give me some clean audio. It is not easy to find screw up from Phil and Gil. We try. Not too many from you either this
Starting point is 00:42:20 time, Doug. Honestly, Dane is the blooper master of all time. Doug. Honestly, Dane is like the blooper master of like all time. So, alrighty. JB, let's go ahead and play the bloopers and hopefully everything goes smooth. If the audience can't hear them, you guys just let me know. I am on
Starting point is 00:42:36 the chat room. Sir, we had her cornered between us. Virgis' milit... Well, you wanted a blooper. Johnny! Johnny! Johnny! Johnny! Johnny! Johnny! Johnny!
Starting point is 00:43:01 One of those has got to work. How much does this guy know, TJ? Don't go soft on him just because he can make liquor. Party! Oh, shit. Sorry. Hold on. Here at Changing Earth, we love to make our own sound effects. We eat. We eat eat it's just bring dinner
Starting point is 00:43:29 it's not ready yet and it's gonna need time to cool anyway okay we should just make bacon wrapped asparagus so that way we're getting what we're what they really ate there major i wouldn't ask unless the situation was dire. The rains have been a... Alright, redo. Her legend, her reputation, her spirit, it's everything we need to give a face to the rebellion.
Starting point is 00:43:58 I'm gonna make sure she survives to tell the... I'm gonna make sure she survives to tell her story to the people. Hail herpes. Stay with me. Live together, die together. Don't you remember? Whatever. I'm out.
Starting point is 00:44:23 I heard TJ's hiring. Erica, I'm Dexter. The Moore family becomes black shirts after Ben's dies. Testing. Testing. To see if this is the mic. Crap. another page flip loved and page flips top shelf bloopers right here coming at you live from the office. Changing Earth Studios. Yeah. Changing Earth Studios.
Starting point is 00:45:06 This is major... Wait, what is it? Earth... Major Verges. Yeah, this is Earth to Major Verges. Oh, my. Yep, yep. We have some fun here in the Changing Earth Studios.
Starting point is 00:45:26 I love the hell herpes, though. I'm always hearing things. I just think the reason why we give you such clean audio and such few bloopers, though, is like, I know I talked to Gillian a while back, and we do a lot of prep work to make sure that our lines are lined up and everything's ready to go. But then I remember telling her quite a few seasons ago, if you bolo something, if you completely screw it up, don't try to fight through it. Just dump it, take a deep breath, start over. Jump it, take a deep breath, start over. And, you know, because like to me, that's from a podcasting perspective, that's the hardest thing to try to clean up on the back end is if you tumble over your words. If you just stop and restate it, you can just clip that piece out and move it.
Starting point is 00:46:16 It's like it never happened. Yeah, it's an easy edit process. But if you stumble your way through it, it's almost impossible to make that not sound like you've stumbled over i did have from uh i believe this was back in season one you said um it was supposed to be minneapolis and you said minneapolis and i was able i still pronounce it that way though i was able to take it and make it sound like Minneapolis. Yeah. And it's clean, man. I usually do. I usually do like a Gillian and Phil do. I record everything cohesively.
Starting point is 00:46:53 And if there's something that's not right, I actually just dump it and re-record the entire thing again. So this last time I was like, you know, she wants bloopers. So when Chris and I record, I'm like, all right, you're going to get it. Yep. Yeah. I got like four files like of the records. I'm like, which one do I choose now?
Starting point is 00:47:14 I actually think on the very first, the very first season you asked us for, I actually went through and I edited it myself on my end before I sent it to you to get rid of all the bloopers. And then the second time, I don't remember what happened, but we were like way, way behind late getting our stuff to you. And I was like, no time. Get it out right now. And I just sent it to you like the way it came out was the way you got it. I'm like, where's your stuff? Where's your stuff? Where's your stuff?
Starting point is 00:47:36 Where's your stuff? I think that's what it was for us is this last one. She goes, hey, the lines didn't come out right. I need these. Oh, no. The files got deleted or something. You're like, oh, you lines didn't come out right. I need these. Oh, no, the files got deleted or something. You're like, oh, you just redo them. I had the Dropbox extravaganza.
Starting point is 00:47:50 I have a mess. I will say, because of my own podcasting paranoia, I am pretty sure I still have everything back to season one we've recorded for you. I do. I do, too. I keep them in folders. Yeah, see, Doug? then you wouldn't have to record three times for me dude it's a living it's a live and learn type situation because i've lost
Starting point is 00:48:15 audio in the past and kicked myself in the butt so like i just i don't throw anything away i've got a doug and i we fight with the Dropbox like he wouldn't believe. He's got his own folder now. I hate Dropbox. Oh, my God. He's got his own, like, designated folder now. It cannot be touched by anybody else. Ouch.
Starting point is 00:48:36 Like, that's it. Well, there's so much audio. I mean, he actually has the most amount of lines. So, yeah, there's a lot of audio that comes through because it's always like TJ and somebody else, right? It's not like the family or the, it's just TJ, somebody,
Starting point is 00:48:52 TJ, somebody, TJ, somebody. Um, we do have, uh, some cool scenes coming up where I did like an alone episodes,
Starting point is 00:49:00 like what the other characters are doing in the day of life of Sergei and stuff like that. So that episode is coming up, and that was pretty fun to do. He didn't have one episode. He didn't have a whole bunch of lines. It's all good. Yeah, I appreciate you, man. He's even got the video
Starting point is 00:49:20 of him recorded now. It's pretty cool. All right, let's roll with number two blooper set. I've put up three. Number two blooper set. This is Mac. Take one. We're going to try this out with no bloopers. I repeat,
Starting point is 00:49:40 no bloopers. Wow. All right. no bloopers well alright episode 5 keep it together boys okay oops wrong program I think we're testing mom's patience. What do I do?
Starting point is 00:50:09 What do I do? I think they'll work. What the? I can't. hold on What the You bitch That doesn't sound southern What the You bitch
Starting point is 00:50:35 Sir the prisoners are in lockdown Do you want me to take him Up there as well I said that wrong Okay try it again Sound of knock Sir the prisoners are in Really Do you want me to take him up there as well? I said that wrong. Okay, try it again. Sound of knock. So the prisoners are in... Really?
Starting point is 00:50:50 Okay, stop. No sound? Yuri came by and left... No, wait. Hang on. Yuri came by and left that stack of papers, and Laudner came by and left her here. Virgis, Season 3, 7 and 8.
Starting point is 00:51:13 I apologize in advance for you having to listen to me clear my throat and all this nonsense. It's allergy season down here, you know what it's like. Get Ryan's team online and get to the bottom of this motion kids you go get firewood we don't have much day left like day light go get firewood we don't have much daylight left so i just have to say other than allergies being a thing which most y'all can sympathize with me for being tongue-tied is a thing too and it feels exactly like the phrase says like you you're just talking and talking the next thing you know your tongue cannot figure out what part
Starting point is 00:52:03 of your mouth to get into to get out of the way of what you're trying to say it's just that's so true so true it happens yeah um dane and carol always record together so like carol's reading tj's lines which is hilarious in and of itself but But then Dane, while she's trying to record, Dane does it like, yeah, but I'm not wearing any pants. And Carol, like, she is a champ. She's like, just keeps it on level. It's the next line. I'm like, how much of his sarcasm does she have to put up with on a daily basis to be able to just be like, I'm laughing my butt off over here listening to it. She deserves an award.
Starting point is 00:52:50 She does. So the next time you record, you want me to say TJ's lines? I could be a TJ. Are you going to wear pants? No. No pants. No pants. This is a pants-free recording studio.
Starting point is 00:53:04 Uh-oh, TJ. Next blooper. Next blooper. All right, JB. Don't protect me. Protect me. Eh. That was...
Starting point is 00:53:24 I can't. I'm screwing around. Yes, TJ. Yes, TJ. Yes. I'm screwing around. Yes, do some death sounds now. Okay. Okay. I don't know what to do i don't know what to do uh just do like like you're getting hit this time Oh! And just make a dad noise?
Starting point is 00:54:06 Uh-huh. All right, Brock, that's your cue. Dad noises. Okay, um... Oh! I feel like that wasn't good either. All right, we'll look... Trail it off a little more.
Starting point is 00:54:18 Oh! Everything is fine. I need to speak to a man named Hal. I need to speak to a man named Hall inside. Everything is fine. I need to speak to a man named Hal. I need to speak to a man named Hal inside. Everything is fine. I need to speak... How do I enunciate this? Everything's fine. I need to speak to a man named Hal inside. And I'll get these rascals fed.
Starting point is 00:54:47 Fucking chihuahuas. We have a lot of dried meat, but no fat. If we had some fresh meat, we could render the fat from it for our bleh bleh bleh. It's like Dr. Seuss. TJ, get your ass over here and tell me what's going on.
Starting point is 00:55:14 You're not saying the line. I couldn't help myself. Go ahead. They're moving on. Let's go. That was cheesy. They're moving on. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:55:34 Get your boots and jackets off. Get your boots and jackets off. You didn't make contact, did you? Yup. Bastard. Get out of my car. You're on the wrong path. There isn't much.
Starting point is 00:55:58 I told him he could do any of... I told him he could do any of the Laudner's... I told him he could have any of Laudner's women that he wanted. Redo. I told him he could have any of Laudner's women if he wins. I don't know, Johnny.
Starting point is 00:56:17 I get told about a lot of Dolores' clients. I don't know, Johnny. I get... Oh, I said that wrong. I don't know, Johnny. I get, oh, I said that wrong. I don't know, Johnny. I don't get told about a lot of, I don't know, Johnny. I don't get told about all of Dolores' clients. I don't know, Johnny. I don't get told about all of Dolores' clients. Johnny, I don't get told about all of Dolores's clients Johnny I don't know yeah bitch I don't know
Starting point is 00:56:50 Johnny I don't get told about all of Dolores's clients that just sounds weird coming out of my mouth good ones that is my buddy Ashley and she is actually one of my co-workers and she has been helping me out with this project since day one she will not come on a live show at all she's like nope so uh but i really appreciate her as well she's done a great job with a lot of stuff so let's go i didn't mean to say it during what was playing but it made me think of the power rangers right yes i know he's like yeah um so i so i know every one of y'all i mean just based on what we just heard every one of y'all has had to have had the experience one day where you're sitting there kicking yourself in the butt because you just cannot say a simple line straight like
Starting point is 00:57:49 blooper after blooper after blooper yes okay now has anybody ever gotten so frustrated that you actually like walked away from the mic to get yourself reset because i've had that experience once before and i don't remember what season it was in but i i could not get it was a short line too it was only about six or seven words and i could not get it out to save my life and i got so frustrated i literally like hit the record button got up stepped outside lit up my pipe took about 15 minutes to you know the banana blooper um from last last uh section the and i was i was supposed to say bandana and for the life of me i just kept saying banana over and over and they're laughing and yeah it was it was rough so that one and then um the effing chihuahua. So that's one of Dane's bloopers because Carol was all,
Starting point is 00:58:47 and he's like, freaking chihuahuas. And so we say that all the time now at home. It's kind of one of our staples. Obviously, the little guy doesn't say the F-bomb. But, yeah, so way to go, Dane. Thank you. Appreciate that. I only got one for you, Doug. That's okay. Appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:59:07 I only got one for you, Doug. That's okay. I didn't have a lot of mess-ups. No, I tried to lay off some of your mess-ups. I now want to say redo. I like it redo. Redo. Yours?
Starting point is 00:59:23 Yeah, redo. Yeah, he messes up. Redo. Redo. Yep. Redo Yeah, he messes up, redo Redo I think most of the time I'll go nope Nope The guy who plays Wadner is always like, stop I'm not stopping it, but okay, go ahead
Starting point is 00:59:41 I'm going to start going wrong answer. I think that's more of a center thing because I'll say, eh. Right? I feel like I'm getting on to a child. No, we've got some good ones coming up from Katie Lynn on the next set. So that's some good times. Teresa loves
Starting point is 01:00:08 Katie Lynn's character for sure. You guys just wait. It's good stuff coming up. I promise. It's good stuff. Honestly, Sarah, I was kind of surprised that the editing blooper didn't make it in there from the slow-mo.
Starting point is 01:00:26 Oh, fair enough. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We put up one of the shows, and the end of it was like, thank you for listening. I'm like, JB, I think we have a problem, Houston. We'll have to do that on the next one. You should throw that in the blooper folder while we're thinking about it because i have totally spaced that yeah that was pretty
Starting point is 01:00:51 funny pretty good i think i think you'll definitely have a good one from chris yeah yeah but that's coming up in the next you guys are thinking next right that next one yeah yeah i'm just saying that one was a good one. Yeah. I already have it all together, actually. It's in a folder. It's ready to go. No sneak peeks.
Starting point is 01:01:15 All right, guys. Well, we've gone through our hour. I really appreciate it. It was a fun show. I was like, hey, everyone, you know that I invited and, because I wanted to keep this show smaller this time. I had so many moving parts last time. I didn't want to deal with it. And I'm like, this is all the leadership of Changing Earth.
Starting point is 01:01:32 So you guys have been with me. And yeah, there's a lot of other characters. But you guys really put in a lot of work for me. And I really, really appreciate your time and your energy. This is my dream. And you guys are bringing it to life with me. And really, really appreciate your time and your energy. Like, this is my dream. And you guys are bringing it to life with me. And really, really appreciate that. For real.
Starting point is 01:01:51 We're just happy to be in your dreams. Can you say that? I'm just saying it is, but you got to be a part of it. Can you say that in TJ Swenson voice? Because then it would sound creepy. We're just happy to be in your dream. Ah, he does haunt my dreams.
Starting point is 01:02:08 You, oh, spoiler. Sorry. Honestly, I better be haunting your dreams. Girly. I mean,
Starting point is 01:02:15 Sarah, at least from my perspective, I mean, I'm, I'm glad you asked us to do this. It's been a ton of fun. Like of all the other creative endeavors that like I've personally taken part of and Gillian is taken part of as well, like, this has been something that's always interesting to bring up to people.
Starting point is 01:02:30 Like, when you're sitting around the water core talking, getting to know everybody, be like, oh, yeah, you told somebody that at the event we did at the lakefront recently that you and I do voice acting. And they were like, y'all do what? And it's apparently it's – Well, this is what really happened is i was teaching my students oh that's right how to use the search engine on the internet right because i teach technology and i used the example i was like yeah if you just put my name in the search engine then everything that's on the internet will come up well so they're they're doing all sorts of stuff and they turn one of them turns around and goes miss rabbley you're on imdb you guys are
Starting point is 01:03:11 voice actor yeah it's like what i'm on imdb yeah i'm on imdb right they um i put the show up on imbd and uh they went out and did like the spider of it and they populated the page for that i didn't i was unexpected for me as well my students were they were totally impressed nice yeah that's right professionals that's right love it love it no but it has been a hell of an experience i'm glad you asked us yeah Yeah, it's been fun. Yeah, thank you guys. And then, well, we'll deal with that. We'll deal with Teresa's character in a minute.
Starting point is 01:03:53 Oh, God. I have one request, Sarah. Oh. Could you change my last name in IMDB? Is it wrong? You have H-O-G-E-N. What? You'll never get famous like that.
Starting point is 01:04:09 I'll never get famous like that. I'll never get famous like that. That has to be a complete typo on my part. I don't know. The A is far from the E on the QWERTY keyboard. I know. I was just thinking the same thing. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:04:23 It's not that far. It's between the W and the S. Yeah, that's true. She probably has a hard time typing it when she has all the kiddos laughing and going off in the background. That's the movie database. I got this. Yeah, I'll make sure it's correct because if it's not correct there it'll follow through the seasons so i'll make sure it's corrected in my database database don't you got it all right guys well thank you for a great night i really appreciate it we'll be
Starting point is 01:04:59 after christmas will be our next uh get togetherogether and hangout show. So you guys are always welcome, of course. And like I said, thanks so much. Have a great holiday. Have a blessed holiday. Hopefully everything is good and only good things are happening. You too. Looking forward to it. All right.
