Welcome to PBN1.
It's that time of the week again.
Time to slow it all down.
Lord knows
if there's one thing we need in this life,
it is to slow things down.
Take things in.
Take the time to take things in take the time to take things in
so I hope you found yourself
a comfortable position
to enjoy this PBN1.
We're going to talk about anger this episode.
Tis the season
to be merry and bright
But I'm sure each and every one of you has memories
Maybe as far back as yesterday
When you were white hot with anger
Over the holiday season
the hustle and the bustle
the putting up of lights
the decorating of trees
the moving of boxes and packages
the figuring and the fighting
and the interaction between family members.
It's a season that lends itself to great joy and also to great anger.
So let's start it off Deep breath in
And let it out
While I talk
I want you to just
Focus on my voice
And
The breath
Deep breath in.
And out.
The Christians have a process that I really like
called holding
thoughts captive.
And this is something they do
when anger
or other thoughts
show up
in the mind.
You see,
we don't want to get rid of fury.
We don't want to suppress
anger.
Because it's real.
It's fire inside you. It's life.
It's a beautiful part of life we are a people
we are a people who have developed anger and fury because we had to, right? There was a battle out there.
We can't just set that aside
and assume that everyone's going to be as peaceful as us.
But sometimes,
that anger rears its ugly head
when you're deciding on how many strands
and which color bulbs
should go on a Christmas tree.
And that's the wrong
place.
You see, anger,
when it arises,
demands to be studied.
And that's been my best method for getting out of explosive temper is that when anger arrives you pay it attention you hold it
captive you step out of that sort of angry and explosive mentality you hold
it captive and take a look at it.
And you try to figure out what the hell it is you're doing.
And why.
Why.
And now I'll make a confession.
I'll make a confession. But first.
Make sure.
You're comfortable.
Make sure you're still breathing.
Now what I want you to do is I want you to hold that breath at the top for about three seconds.
So we're going to take in a deep breath.
And hold it at the top.
And then let it out.
Carry on with that breath
for the remainder.
As silly as it sounds,
competition online
in video games
can bring out tremendous anger.
Competition in general
can bring out tremendous anger
when you lose.
Video games in general for me
for a very long time
have done that
have brought out tremendous anger
and while it was
probably very embarrassing
it also gave me
an ability to do exactly what I'm recommending to you,
which is to study that anger, you could do it in the car ride home as well, right,
driving around, you can study that anger, like, wow, I'm getting pissed off, why,
what am I so mad about, there's a person in front of me. They zoomed in front of me.
There's a slow person in front of me. They're slowing me down.
Oh, wait.
Am I ill-prepared to be getting where I should be getting?
Or did I leave too late? Where am I rushing to?
What happens if I take a deep breath behind this slow car and just drive? Wait for my opportunity maybe to change lanes if that's something What is the best response for me to explode and yell?
Can I save that fury for something else?
Something more important like my workout later?
Can I save that energy for something like, you know,
the importance of home life.
So I would get furious when I would lose.
And it's probably one of the big reasons I never got into sports.
And it took me years to start to play this out in my head with anger
start to understand
and you start to feel
things beginning
you know it's very very rare
that you get instantly
red in the eyes angry
right
you can start to feel it red in the eyes angry, right?
You can start to feel it.
Or you can start to feel that you're moving into a situation where the anger may come, right?
Like, oh, I'm merging onto the highway and it's 5 p.m.
It's going to be.
And then you start to self-medicate.
You start to breathe. You start to self-medicate.
You start to breathe.
You start to look around at the world and understand that it's beautiful and wonderful.
And you're in it.
Sad Guru, who is probably one of the reasons that I'm here doing this podcast right now,
is notorious for saying,
Anger is a poison that you drink and expect someone else to die.
And it doesn't work like that.
There are things that are released into your body when you're angry.
Chemicals.
Chemical reactions that take place in the body. I don't know.
I want you to think about that though next time, okay?
Next time you feel the fury creeping up
Because look, as beautiful as the holiday season is
You know it can be chaos
Remember the words of Sadhguru
Anger is a poison
That you drink
And expect someone else to die
that you drink and expect someone else to die.
Thank you for joining me, PBN family.
Enjoy your breath and this quiet moment, slowing life down.
Remember, the whole purpose of slowing life down is so we can see it again and hold it,
so we can see our kids and hold it. So we can see our kids and our spouse
and our family. Slow it down so we can enjoy them. Otherwise we're just speeding to the
coffin. Thank you.
