Starting point is 00:00:10 Self-r-r-r-line is an event. The Pepper Broadcasting Network. We have to hit the reset button and create a true culture of preparedness, starting at a very young age and filtering all the way up. Welcome to the gunmetal armory. Here's your host, Dane D. What's up, everybody? This is Dane from the gunmetal armory. Tonight, we are going to be talking more about resistance and the resistance cells that were built during World War II. and how these teams operated, how everything was done, and some of the things that these people put into place for running these resistance groups. So last week we talked about communications, and I'm going to talk a little bit more about communications real quick because there's something I think I need to mention that I didn't get to last week.
Starting point is 00:01:25 but after that we'll probably go into passive resistance and how that works. So that's what we'll do today. So I don't have a ton of time today. So what I want to cover is we were talking about communications last week and how that is important to a resistance cell or an agent behind enemy lines. And the, we were talking about the telephone. We were talking about cutouts. We were talking about couriers, telegrams, dead drops, things of that nature.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Okay. Sending things via the mail, just a lot of different ways to communicate. That's what we were going into. And one of the things that I didn't get to was. because I ran out of time last week, was how these resistance cells would, excuse me, would communicate via advertisements,
Starting point is 00:02:38 okay? They can actually communicate pretty quickly with a large number of people using advertisements. They could be used as, for a concealed, like a code, message if you wanted to, like a concealed message. Or they could be used as a sign to say, okay, now we're going to attack the German garrison or whatever.
Starting point is 00:03:09 You know what I'm saying? For all the resistance groups to attack a specific German group or something like that during World War II. So there were multiple ways that this could be. done and multiple types of advertisements that could signal this, right? So one of the best things about communicating via advertisements was that you could get a message out to a large number of people. You could do it quickly and it is all but impossible. to identify the people that are getting the message.
Starting point is 00:03:59 So think about that. If everyone that's in the know knows to pick up a certain newspaper or go to a certain website even, or I don't know, you know, get a certain magazine that comes out every month, whatever. I mean, there's so many ways that you could use that to your advantage back in the day. Now, granted, I did talk about websites. That is more of a modern way to do things, obviously. But the doctrine, the technology, the ability remains the same.
Starting point is 00:04:48 It is, according to the, the, um, S-O-E spy manual, they mentioned that it is best to be used as a sign for action or a general warning. So if you have if you have Gestapo that are coming into the area and your entire team knows to watch
Starting point is 00:05:15 you know, Bob's newspaper or whatever and you put a classified ad in there or any kind of advertisement in there saying whatever that could be used as a warning from your forward scout teams that yeah the Gestapo's on its way to your town
Starting point is 00:05:37 and you need to hide every weapon you have and you need to get rid of every explosive you have and no more flights need to come in from the SOE of the OSS you know or whatever I mean it can be done extremely extremely covertly and very, very well.
Starting point is 00:05:55 The other thing it could be used for, what we just mentioned, is the action sign. Okay. The sign that it's time. It's time to move, right? The time, it's time to get off the bench and get going. And every person, no matter how big the group is or how, small the group is, knows to watch that group of advertisements, knows what word you're looking for, and knows what to do when that time comes. Okay. That's important. And again, like I was saying
Starting point is 00:06:44 earlier, the enemy, you know, the Germans, Gestapo, Nazis, whatever you want to call them, they are never going to be able to identify who the members of that that resistance group are. It's absolutely impossible because they can't just, you know, look at who all is going to read this and where's it going to go and how many people are going to read it that, you know, have nothing to do with it. So very, very interesting there, right? you need to potentially, they recommend that you use a cutout as the person who will place the ad. So if you're placing an ad in a newspaper or a magazine or whatever, that needs to be done by a cutout, by someone who doesn't know you and doesn't know why you're putting. those ads in there. You have someone else do it for you that you don't know. They, whatever the wording is of the advertisement, it needs to be completely normal, completely
Starting point is 00:08:10 inconspicuous, look like any other ad, okay? Because it's going to be looked at, everything behind enemy lines is looked at very, very closely. but these are going to be looked at extremely closely as well. So, especially by counter espionage and all these other groups. So whatever kind of signal you send, whatever kind of message you put out there, it has to be covert. It has to be something that could easily be something else. there is a train of thought that articles that are good to do a call to action or warnings or coded messages,
Starting point is 00:09:09 some of the for-sale ones are great, you know, the ads that have stuff that's for sale. or, you know, like, I need this specific item looking for this, you know, desperately seeking Susan. Things like that. It is one of the ways that you can pull that type of stuff. Pull that type of stuff off, right? Now, the advertisement or the place that you put this advertisement in, it has to be, a regular normal
Starting point is 00:09:48 magazine or a regular normal newspaper. There have to be normal advertisers
Starting point is 00:09:53 in there so your message just gets lost in the fray.
Starting point is 00:10:00 It just looks like any other message. That is very, very important because it's
Starting point is 00:10:07 going to get lost in the mix. Now, some of the precautions that they
Starting point is 00:10:14 talk about taking are that messages should be sent, generally should be sent in two parts. And the way that the message needs to be crafted is that without either part, the message makes no sense.
Starting point is 00:10:36 It's kind of the whole code and cipher thing. So, yeah, either part of the message not understandable without the other part. You could send one part of the message, you know, via, you know, like a dead drop, and you could do the other part of the message by the, you know, the mail office or the post office or whatever. You could do it via personal messenger,
Starting point is 00:11:11 you know, multiple different ways that both parts can be sent, okay? keep that in mind. Split the message into two parts that neither part makes sense unless you have the other. Just like a code and a key. You know what I'm saying? So keep in mind also that when it comes to these teams working behind enemy lines, that there should always be at least two to three ways for those teams to communicate,
Starting point is 00:11:43 especially the organizers, the people that are very, very high ranking in those groups, they need to have at least two to three ways to communicate between them only. If they're working together, they need to be able to communicate. And the reason for the two to three different ways to communicate is because if one of those ways is no longer viable, then you've got to have other ways to communicate. They say that important messages should be sent in duplicate, should be doubled.
Starting point is 00:12:22 So there is no mistake that can be made there. They say to avoid putting any kind of a number on the message. So like this is message number one and message number two, that's bad. You do not want to do that because it starts to present too many obvious possibilities. Okay. And then the other thing is it may be necessary to figure out a way that the, the teams can acknowledge that they got the message. You know, so if you put a message into a newspaper, you know, in the classified ads or in the for sale section or whatever, then they put a message into the for sale section saying that they received that, you know, like what if you say, in there that you want to buy a, I don't know, a certain kind of dog, like a Rottweiler or a pit bull, right? And then you get a response in there, you know, pit bull puppies for sale. Okay.
Starting point is 00:13:36 You know, we have three of them, you know, and then one of them is two weeks old. One of them is three weeks old and one of them is four weeks old. okay so you've just given a response to the um the ad that somebody wants a pit bull puppy you've just given a response to that ad and you've given numbers so we have three puppies that could be a message something in three um we have one that is two weeks old three weeks old four weeks old, those three numbers could be anything, and so on. And not that this would be necessary or anything, because this is purely from a historical perspective, but if it was in modern day times, I might consider something like a web forum.
Starting point is 00:14:38 No, never mind. No, I wouldn't. Web forums are too watched, man. wouldn't fuck with that. But ads. Ads got me sharing. You know, a little bit of South Park there. Ads are probably where it's all going to be.
Starting point is 00:14:59 You know, ads is a good place to do that kind of stuff. If it's done correctly, right? So give that a little bit of thought. Old school, sometimes low tech is better than high tech. Don't be afraid to go old school, go for newspapers and things like that. Western Union still works.
Starting point is 00:15:22 You know, telegrams, shit like that. Kind of funny, but it still works. Post office still works. UPS still works. FedEx, all those places still work. So don't be afraid to use the resources that are available. Okay. Next, let's talk about passive resistance.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Right. Passive resistance. Not active resistance. You know, keep in mind, active resistance is sabotage missions, direct action, things like that. Okay? That's active resistance. Passive resistance is more like screwing with the enemy's, you know, ability to produce weaponry. screwing with the enemy's ability to produce really anything,
Starting point is 00:16:18 screwing with their food supplies, obstructing administration for the enemy. Anything like that, okay? The very definition of passive resistance, it consists of acts of sabotage, which depend for their feasibility upon, basically upon being non-technical, Okay, they have to be something sabotage that can be done by anyone.
Starting point is 00:16:46 You don't need electronic skills or anything like that, okay? They need to be, they need to be non-risky. They need to be to the point where they're undetectable or they have, you know, the person doing the sabotage has a perfect cover, so they're never going to get caught. you also got to think at least back then they had to think about the repercussions to the civilian population you know the Nazis were known for their reprisals so you had to consider that back then too and in a modern context not that that would ever happen because this has been for a purely historical perspective but you may have to consider the same thing again in a modern day you know how do you know how do you know know that there wouldn't be some force on the ground that would do something stupid. You know, I've heard multiple stories from Vietnam when our guys just, you know, various, well, not our guys, but various groups did terrible things.
Starting point is 00:17:55 I heard about, you know, the VC doing terrible things to villages and, I mean, on and on and on, dude. So I don't really want to get into that because it's kind of messed up. But another thing that's great for passive resistance, another definition of it, would be something that a large number of people could do. Okay? Something a large number of people could pull off. Now, an organized, organized passive resistance campaign, if you will, it could be looked at kind of like a single person being attacked by hundreds of mosquitoes. Each mosquito only gives the person a small sting, a small little bite or sting, right?
Starting point is 00:18:55 But all of them together, hundreds of mosquitoes, thousands of mosquitoes, they drive that person crazy. they just drive him right out of wherever he is. They can't, the person can't deal with it. It's just one of those things. You know, it's like the old guerrilla warfare doctrine of the flee on the dog's back, constantly biting it over and over and over again. It's very, very hard to fight back against that type of, um, against that type of warfare.
Starting point is 00:19:33 Right. Over the past number of years that we've been fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, our military has come up with the Mosaic warfare doctrine, you know, being able to fight on multiple fronts and, you know, integrated warfare between all the branches. And we have retooled our military in a lot of ways to fight insurgents, to fight guerrilla campaigns, right? but y'all saw what happened in Afghanistan and I think that's because of shitty leadership but you know it's obvious
Starting point is 00:20:11 what went down you know even you know Ruski's tried to pacify the Afghani landscape and could not you know with all their might and all their money and all
Starting point is 00:20:25 their this and that they couldn't do it very very interesting Anywho, whenever you're facing an enemy and you're trying to do passive resistance, keep in mind that obstruction of administration and obstruction of production are two of the biggest pitfalls that any enemy is going to have. now there are weaknesses to every massive military every industrial complex all of it there are always weaknesses no matter how strong a country looks or how strong a group may look they have a weakness or they have multiple weaknesses so one thing that you can keep in mind as far as, you know, passive resistance would be the character of the people that you're fighting. Are they vain? Do they have a sense of humor? Are they self-conscious? You know,
Starting point is 00:21:45 do they know what they're doing? What kind of character do they have? Do they have a sense of honor or no. Depending on where they are, like if we had red dawn happen here in America, you know, and you've got troops from, what was it, South America and Russia in the beginning one, the first one. So those enemies are going to be homesick. They're going to want to go back to wherever they came from. They don't want to be in another land. And they're scared.
Starting point is 00:22:24 They're thinking about their girlfriend back home or whatever. I mean, it's just very, very bad for them. That and, you know, let's see. How do I word this? At some point, you know, those resistance campaigns may have depleted the enemy to such a degree that all they have left, are shitty personnel. All they have left are bad soldiers or they got a major shortage of soldiers. So that is definitely something that needs to be kept in mind. Now, the organization of passive resistance is not terribly difficult, but it needs to be done if you're going to make an impact or if they were going to
Starting point is 00:23:20 to make an impact back in the day, they needed to organize how passive resistance was going to take place. You have to organize and direct. You have to have an organization, you have to be, your group has to have organization and it has to have a direction it's heading in. It's absolutely essential if that PR campaign, passive resistance, not public relations, believe or not, If those campaigns are going to be successful, then you need direction and organization. So you need to look at what you want to accomplish, who your enemy is, and how best to accomplish that. Now, back in the day, they would get sabotage equipment and gear, well, equipment of the same thing, but weapons, experts, It's parachute behind enemy lines for them and so many other things.
Starting point is 00:24:27 They had so many ways they could come at these evil Nazi bastards. So that was part of the good part about it, was they had a lot of, what do you want to call that? Backup, I guess, as best. You know, they had a lot of support for what they were doing. Now, they say that someone who's good with propaganda is a good organizer too. And they also talk about using the resistance cell system as a good way to organize their passive resistance campaign. So all these things are important.
Starting point is 00:25:13 I'm going to have to cut this short because I have to get back inside to go back to work. but we're going to talk next week about specialization incentives, the effect of passive resistance on the civilian population and how that might work behind enemy lines. Simple acts and complicated acts of resistance. We're going to talk about obstruction of production and obstruction of administration next week. So thank you everybody.
