I remember a time before the Great Quake.
Before the climate refugees called FEMA camps home.
Before the labor laws and infertilization program.
They called her the lone survivor, the savior of the refugees. But I called her Mom.
This is life on the changing earth.
Huh?
Wake up, Cupcake.
What? huh wake up cupcake what come on the sun's not even up yet it will be by the time you get your
gear on come on let's move it fine oh no way can i just stay here? No, let's go.
Why do you want me to go so bad?
I can just stay here and take care of Vince.
He's fine.
Now get your shit on.
Okay, okay. Okay.
No coffee?
Where the heck did he go?
A training field?
You made a training field.
Of course I did.
Why are we here?
I thought we were going hiking, not fighting.
Because I want you to get your sights set. On what? A bow?
Yep, just for you. Here's some arrows, and over there, that's our target.
How did you know that I shot a bow? We never talked about that.
Major Virges told me you said you had bow hunted at one time. Go ahead, try it.
That's perfect, Bennett. How did you know how to set up
for my size we had star sit on her knees they were in on this oh yeah take your
shot oh that sucked you gotta knock the rust off here try it again
bullseye way to go buttercup set your next sight 50 yards would be a nice shot give it a go
perfect let's go okay put on these snowshoes you're gonna need them yes sir
i knew the training would stick.
I'm sorry, you Bennett.
You're such a turd.
Come on.
We're burning daylight.
Tiny voices ringing in my head.
Is this the beginning or the end?
It's a boy, sir.
Congratulations. What did you name him?
Ginger wanted to call him Bill.
Sir? Are you there?
I'm here. That's awesome. I'm so happy for you guys. If it wasn't so cold, I'd say life is good.
But damn, it's cold. How's everyone doing? Good, sir. Improvements all the way around. That's good to hear.
Did you give him the bow? Sure did, sir. He was pleased. Said he was looking for a way to get her
out of the cabin. Keep me posted. It's going to be a long winter.
That's what I've been hearing, too.
The natives are saying that when it comes in this hard, it usually sticks around.
You take care of that baby.
Will do, sir.
I once thought myself a gypsy A wandering sort of man Looking for something in particular, sir?
No, just thought I'd warm up by the fire.
This is the job to have in the winter.
The steel cools too quickly in the cold, so you have to keep it warm.
Don't let me keep you from your work.
The steel cools too quickly in the cold, so you have to keep it warm. Don't let me keep you from your work.
You see, sir, the nice thing about metal is each time it's tempered by the fire,
you have a chance to make it into something new.
But you can only heat treat the same piece a couple of times.
Then you have to completely melt it down and form a new billet,
or else you end up with a brittle piece of metal that will crack under pressure.
But when you have the right ingredients
and the right amount of heat,
you can make a beautiful weapon.
Think that works with people?
Sir, you can't put a person in the forge.
You're wrong. We do it all the time.
Well then, I guess it depends on the amount of care
the smith takes in crafting a weapon. His eyes were steely hard.
He met mine in a crossfire.
He shot at me from his mouth.
He said, your life is short.
Your death is tall. You'll find no scheming way out. in the cluster at 10 o'clock. See them? Yeah, I see them.
Go for the big one.
No, Bennett.
You go for the second biggest so the biggest can reproduce.
We won't be here to eat it.
They're beautiful.
Take the shot.
Hold on.
Here he comes.
Did you see that shot? A boy's wanted to hunt an elk. That was awesome.
That boy's not running far. Well done. He's got to be dead by now.
Here's the blood trail.
And here's your arrow.
It went right through.
He's over here.
Nice job.
Thank you, God, for your bountiful harvest
and for sacrificing this animal for my family to eat.
Don't worry, Cupcake. I'll clean it for you.
I was just waiting for you to finish your prayer or whatever voodoo crap you were doing over there.
Shut up. I was thanking it for its life.
Thank you for being stupid enough to get shot and put food in our bellies.
That's so mean.
It's an animal, Erica.
It's somebody in our way.
Makes no difference to me except when I eat and when I don't.
Sit down and take a load off.
How can you say that?
Don't you feel for them?
Don't their images haunt you?
I see them, but I ignore them.
The fight we're fighting is and always has been much bigger than them, than me, than you, than everyone.
That doesn't sound daunting at all.
This is it, Cupcake.
We're fighting for the survival of the human race and the future of what that race will be.
It never should have come to this.
Pretty soon, there won't be a generation left
that knew what this country once was.
They're already rewriting history.
When I signed up for the military, I did it because I wanted to be part of something that mattered.
Oh, man, this is a stinky liver.
I met women, and I divorced them.
I never had children.
See, I was already married to the Corps, and I was fighting to ensure that all of the children of America were safe.
A real-life American Boy Scout.
Then the earthquake came, and the ocean level advanced.
People were dying everywhere.
They were going crazy. They were lost.
They turned to us to help them.
It seemed like the right thing to do.
Order was being restored, but then watching those people.
And meeting you, I knew what was going on out here. Luxuries were being restored while refugees
suffered, sometimes at my own hand. The constitution that I swore to defend was destroyed.
Why would you give up your career to fight for your beliefs?
Who said I gave up my career? I've been deployed here as your bodyguard.
I even got my
promotion to Master Sergeant and a pay raise. Happy I could help. I would risk my career, Erica.
But the fact that I've been ordered here keeps us all much safer. I told you the resistance is
much deeper than you think. Your career better be worth it because this is my life, Bennett.
If we don't try to take it back peacefully, we're going to war.
You have the chance to end it all.
I have to raise a flatline
Eyes that never sleep
And it seems like
You've been holding on
For the chance to feel anything at all
That's my girl, Chuck. To be continued... You'll see her at the ceremony. Mr. Lee, I... TJ, sit down and have a drink. Yeah, TJ.
Sit down.
Angelo is up next.
Screw that kid. He's gonna lose.
Can't you just give him a chance?
I've given him too many already.
Come on, TJ.
We'll go back to your place and grab a drink before the ceremony.
Mr. Lee, would that be okay?
Go do what you do, but, TJ,
don't make the wrong choice tonight.
I'll make sure he stays out of trouble, Robert.
Oh, come on, Chuck.
I wanted you to see Angelo fight.
I'm sure he'll do fine.
You want some pretty girls later, right?
Someone has to get them ready for the party.
You drive a hard bargain. They'll sparkle like diamonds, Serge. We'll see you at the
ceremony later, brothers. You won't have a reason to be there. Just go, DJ. You've already fucked up this night enough. You want a bet?
You have to respect me for once.
Just once?
You know what I mean, asshole.
You know what, Sergei?
I'll take that bet because your boy is gonna lose.
We'll see.
Come on, boys. Let's go see her.
TJ, do not cross Mr. Lee.
He'll never know.
He will, TJ, and you will pay the price for it.
I realize that.
Robert has been training her himself.
What?
After what happened with Jamie, the juniors were beating on her and calling her a traitor.
Why didn't anyone tell me?
Because, TJ, they knew she was your favorite, and she brought Jamie into your home.
You couldn't fight this battle, or it would only have made things worse for Margaret.
So, Mr. Lee did it.
He did, and that's how she earned her black shirt.
She learned to love the paint.
See, brother? He has your pick. You should have learned that a long time ago, TJ.
I did.
Don't forget it.
I won't.
Come on, TJ. Let's go grab that drink.
I want to check in on Therese anyhow. See you after the ceremony, Chuck?
You know I'll be there. I gave my life away a long time ago.
I sold my soul, you know I'm not coming home.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
I gave my life away, my heart and my soul.

You know what?
What?
I liked it much better when you had to just listen to my orders and I didn't have to explain everything to you.
I bet you did.
Okay, Cupcake, it's all ready for you.
Seriously, I have to pull that thing all the way back?
It's training day, after all.
You didn't think I was going to be all sunshine and roses, did you?
I gutted it for you.
I shot it.
And you want to show off that beautiful elk to everyone, don't you?
Yeah.
Then I guess you're pulling it home.
Come on, hopscotch.
A tiny voice is ringing in my head.
Is this the beginning or the end?
Damn, this thing is heavy.
Suck it up. Let's go.
I just don't know.
I just don't know.
How much do you know about this world, Erica?
Not much. I guess.
Do you know that the government now consists of region boards that govern it?
I knew that the government disintegrated after the sick hit.
Regulatory groups led by the largest landowners comprise the federal governing board.
Why am I not surprised?
We feel the same way. The board's a toll power for too long. It's time to give it back to the people.
So what's the problem?
The Social Safety Party holds the majority of the seats.
They're content to maintain the United States as a fully socialized nation.
From what I remember of history, that system has never worked out too well before.
And that's what we are now.
The resources are allotted and collected via FEMA regional districts.
So, we're in the northern region now?
No. Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona make up the western region. The
governing boards have little use for it. I've seen new clothing and kitchen products, and
there's medicine. Who makes it? The refugees with government oversight. No shit. It's getting
hard to manage the process now that things are settling down and production needs are increasing.
What about other states? Like Minnesota and Texas. What regions are they in?
You better start taking off some of them clothes, Cupcake. You don't want to work up a sweat in this cold.
You could help me.
Yeah, I could.
North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota make up the northern region.
Texas seceded.
They left the United States?
Yes, ma'am.
They didn't want anything to do with the refugee program.
Good for them.
Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas make up the illustrious central region.
That's where the new capital is.
Can you slow down a little?
Come on.
You can do it.
Anyway, Nebraska was pretty much gone after the Okalala collapse.
Remember how packed the camp was then?
Yeah.
It's even worse now.
Three families to every refugee home.
Can you imagine that?
No.
What about the disease threat?
Everyone gets their shots.
Oklahoma and New Mexico make up the southern region,
and what was left of the eastern states makes up the Appalachian region. It's just an island beyond the Mississippi Sea. The what? The ocean filled
the Mississippi River and expanded it. Now that things are getting better, businessmen want to
build empires again. They started the Congressional Party to challenge the majority control of the
Social Safety Party. They have a solid leadership base. It's all about money. They want to get
industries back into the hands of the private owners. The regulatory board of landowners in
FEMA would still manage essential social programs. Well, it is all about the money. Pretty much.
The social safety party is guarding the pharmaceutical companies closely because they
need them to keep the population healthy. They're hesitant to start allowing them to charge for
products again. They control the credits that allowing them to charge for products again.
They control the credits that have our country functioning without bartering.
Wait, you mean there's no money?
Not the dollar like we used to know.
A credit system was created by the government.
When you turn in your goods, you get government credits to buy other government products.
No way.
After the Great Quake, people burned money just to keep warm. That's all it
was good for. What are you guys supporting? Because neither of these seem to solve the
refugee problem. The people are as tired of these regulatory appointed boards as you are
dragging that massive bull home. Let's take a break. Thank you. Where do I go?
And if we carry on, my friends, we can make it to the end.
I just don't know where to go anymore.
Are you sure you don't want me to take her over there?
Don't be silly, TJ. You have the ceremony to do tonight.
You and Sheila go have a good time. I'll take her to the doctor.
Thank you, Susan.
You know you can count on me.
Don't we have supplies coming in tonight?
We do, but Patrice knows what to do with them.
Don't worry. Go have a good time.
Come on, Yuri.
Let's go make Margaret a black shirt.
Lead the way, brother.
Don't say you got anything
Gotta be everything
Gotta be everything
But I don't know what I need But I don't know what I want Gotta be everything, gotta be everything.
But I don't know what I need, but I don't know what I want.
But all I do know is I won't miss a thing. But I don't know what I need, but I don't know what I want.
But all I do know is I won't miss a thing.
Nice of you boys to make it.
Are you kidding? I wouldn't miss this for the world. Nice of you boys to make it.
Are you kidding?
I wouldn't miss this for the world.
What kept you?
Teresa isn't doing well.
Susan took her over to the dock.
That woman has me worried.
Me too, Mr. Lee.
Hey, Angelo didn't pass tonight.
I want you to take it easy on Serge.
He made the bet.
Humor an old man, alright?
Where's the old man, Mr. Lee?
Don't you make jokes to me.
I'm asking you. Don't make me kill you. Yes, sir,
Mr. Lee.
I did it, TJ.
I'm going to be a black shirt.
Margaret, settle down and mind your manners.
Why? What's... Oh, Mr. Lee,
I'm sorry. I didn't see you there, sir.
Congratulations, darling.
Thank you, sir. Thank you for all your help.
Go line up with the others, honey.
Yes, sir. Bye, TJ.
You can't have her show public affection like that.
She's just excited, Mr. Lee.
If someone wants to get to you, who do you think they'd hurt?
Me.
Wrong. They'd hurt someone you love.
Why do you think I always had someone to protect you?
If they wanted to get to you, they would hurt me?
Exactly.
Until you're willing to take responsibility for her,
you can't make her any different than any of your other fathers.
She can't be my protege.
Exactly.
Here he comes.
Angelo lost.
I heard.
You don't have to respect me, DJ.
I lost the bet.
Sergei, you're my brother, and I respect you.
You don't need to make a bet to earn that.
What?
You two can discuss it later.
They're lined up for their marks.
Hold that thought, Sergei. We'll talk about how you can repay me can discuss it later. They're lined up for their marks. Hold that thought, Sergei.
We'll talk about how you can repay me for your loss later.
But you just said...
TJ, now.
You heard the man. Tonight, I am honored to present you a fine group of elite fighters to join the ranks
of the Black Shirts.
Turn and face the crowd.
Shirts off.
Yes, sir!
With this mark, you become a piece of me.
Your performance represents me.
And if you fail I fail Nå er det en hel del av kriget som har skett. Go and take your new black shirts.
Yes, sir!
Protect DJ.
What the hell was that, Sergei?
It came from the medical building.
What? Teresa was there?
You have to go home, TJ.
We don't know if it's safe.
TJ, you need to walk with me right now.
Mr. Lee.
Now.
Yes, Mr. Lee.
Yuri, go find out what happened and report to me at TJ's house.
Yes, sir.
What did I teach you about pain, son?
To inflict it faster than my opponent.
Never let it guide my decisions and harness it for my own strength.
Then what in the fuck are you doing?
Teresa's, she's special to me.
And you're special to me, son.
You can't go risk your life
in an unknown situation for Teresa.
If she lived or died tonight, what would you do?
You have to rise above those things, TJ.
Yes, sir.
I won't always be here to make sure you control yourself.
And you won't listen to anyone.
So you have to control it.
You're strong and you're powerful.
But you're not invincible.
Don't say that, Mr. Lee.
How would I run all this without you?
Chuck told me what you did for Margaret.
Yeah, she's a good kid.
The people have put together the Constitutionalist Party.
They want to return rights to the states.
It would once again make the Constitution the rule of law,
which would make every female camp illegal.
Where would all the people go?
There's no reason we can't use the camps as open housing facilities
that would help the refugees get back on their feet.
There would be no more mandatory population control
or occupational deployments.
It could heal our country.
So why haven't the people voted for it?
The system is ruled by the elite landowners and the FEMA board.
The landowners appoint the FEMA board and nominate their largest contributor.
But I thought refugees outside the camps were still allowed to vote.
Sure, who counts the votes?
The large landowners essentially hold every card.
So why would they want to give that up?
They wouldn't.
Exactly. They wouldn't.
But they don't see what's happening out here.
They haven't watched thousands of people lose their homes to become slaves.
They haven't patrolled the Badlands and performed rescue missions
where rescuing supplies took priority over lives.
Oh, you noticed that too?
You're damn right I did, and I'm not the only one.
The majority of landowners don't like the new system.
They feel just as trapped as the refugees.
They're struggling to make production quarters
while the central region lavishes in a life of exceptionalism.
These landowners are just as scared to challenge the system
because of all the chaos after the Great Wake. I can't say I blame them. Really? After all you've been through, you're the
last person I thought I'd hear that from. I'm not stupid, Sergeant. I was just one woman with a tiny
view of what was happening in the world. I saw what the grief did to people.
I watched people grasp for power,
and I know personally what the quake caused the people to do to have to stay alive.
I can't imagine all the death that happened because of the chaos,
disease, and disaster that swept over our great nation.
Now that things are back in some kind of working order, I don't blame people for being afraid of returning to a system of values and trust in your fellow citizens.
And that's why we need you, Erica.
Why?
Because you hold true to your values.
You've been on the edge of existence since the Great Quake ten years ago, but you still hold true to the principles that all of us as Oath Takers swore to.
You don't need me.
I don't know about political stuff or any of that junk, honestly.
I never paid attention before the quake,
and I certainly haven't been able to since.
I'm just me.
Exactly. Hold on.
Oh, hey, Mom.
I didn't know you guys were coming out this way.
What are you doing out here?
I thought you were making a stew. Oh, I didn't know you guys were coming out this way. What are you doing out here? I thought you were making a stew.
Oh, I uh...
Star, wait up!
Oh, hey guys.
Damn, did you shoot that mom?
I sure did.
That's a beauty, Erica.
Finally, you guys are back.
Wow, that deer is huge!
It's an elk, Daniel. A big bull elk.
It's cool.
If we carry on, my friends
We can make it to the end
I just don't know where to go.
I try to keep things on the down low. Erica needs to feel comfortable.
But she needs guards, sir.
Bennett will be with her.
You're putting a lot of faith in one man.
With good reason.
How's your mom doing?
The same. We've had some fun days together, but I miss the mom I knew.
I get that. My mom refused chemo. She wanted quality, not quantity.
Thanks for bringing me with you, sir. At least we got one more Christmas together. Major Virgis, a moment of your time? Lieutenant Colonel Payne,
what are you doing so far north? I need to discuss something with you in person. Sergeant Stevens,
you're dismissed. Yes, sir. Have a seat. I'm sure you've had a long day, Major. Why don't you come
by my officer's mess for dinner and we can discuss it there. Sounds like a plan, ma'am.
We'll see you later tonight.
Do you like morale patches?
Morale patches that are prepper related?
Things like, hey, can I drink that fuel?
Two is one, one is none, three is a guarantee?
Or been prepping since Y2K?
Well, if so, go to PatchOfTheMonth.co and subscribe for $10 a month or $100 a year.
Susan? You're home early. Where's Teresa? I'm right here.
You're home early.
Where's Teresa?
I'm right here.
Teresa, you were supposed to be at the medical center.
I feel fine. I'm not sitting over there while they poke and prod me.
What's all the commotion about out there?
There was an explosion at the medical facility. I thought you were there.
Can I help you find something, Mr. Lee?
No, I'm good. Are you staying for dinner? I'm making gnocchi.
TJ, come talk to me for a minute.
Yes, Mr. Lee.
What the hell is Kaylin doing chained in your room?
She doesn't like being in the cell with Jamie.
What the fuck do you care what she likes?
She's leaving tomorrow. Laudner's taking her.
That's not the point, TJ.
You love Teresa like a mother, don't you? No, I mean, well, I never knew my mother. Men like us
don't have our mothers living with us. Did you ever meet my mother? No, I didn't know you had one.
Where do you think I come from, TJ? I don't know, sir. I never thought about it.
How about my wife?
I met her.
Was she around very much?
No, sir.
Men like us with responsibilities and passions like ours can't share our space with ladies.
Trust me on that.
It never mattered before.
Was she ever happy with it?
No. She hates when I'm retraining someone.
That's because she's a lady.
But who's going to cook and clean for me?
You can get anyone to do that.
If you love her, you have to let her go.
DJ, Mr. Lee, what are you doing out here?
Sorting shit out.
What'd you find out?
They left a message, DJ.
What was it?
They thought Teresa was there.
Whoever it was wanted to kill someone you love.
You see, DJ?
I'll take care of it, Mr. Lee. Let's go eat dinner.
You never knew me one bit
Oh, baby, please admit it
It's your imagination.
This ain't no realization.
Happy visions put around your head.
Remember who is gone and dead.
Just admit it. Is everything okay, TJ?
Everything is fine.
It smells wonderful in here.
Hello, Yuri. Have a seat. You want a beer?
You all sit down. I'll grab the drinks.
TJ!
Sit down, woman. Relax.
Thank you, TJ.
Thank you, TJ.
TJ, what is going on?
You brought her home.
You saved her.
Thank you.
She's the one that wanted to come home.
But you listened.
You take such good care of her.
I love her.
And so do I.
They were trying to kill her to get to me.
How do you know that?
They left a note.
I want you to stay here until I can figure this out.
We can do that.
You two, bring them drinks.
Yes, sir, Mr. Lee.
Give us a minute.
You've already had a minute.
Let's go.
We're coming. This isn't who you are But you're losing control You're a wonder
A wonder
A wonder
In your head
A wonder In your head Thank you. It's open.
Stevens, what are you doing out so late?
I thought you were going to have dinner with your mother.
I am, sir.
My mother was wondering if you would like to join us.
I'm going to have to take a rain check.
Where are you headed, sir?
Lieutenant Colonel Payne invited me to the officer's mess for dinner.
Oh, that sounds... informal.
That's why I'm wearing my uniform with the sweatpants.
Make sure you do, sir. I've heard the officer's food is the best.
Always is. She has information on those black-shirted fighters.
I guess it's worth it, dear, in that high collar.
I sure hope so. Let me know when I can come meet the family.
You're always welcome, sir. Have a nice night.
But in the wee hours of the morning Let me know when I can come meet the family. You're always welcome, sir. Have a nice night.
Please come in, Major. Have a seat.
Thank you, ma'am. I wasn't expecting so much candlelight.
The fluorescent lighting in here is intolerable.
Where'd they dig those lights up anyway?
They're the same ones that they use in the greenhouse.
That way they don't have to manufacture multiple types.
That makes sense.
Except for the fact that I'm not a vegetable.
Feels like I'm sunburned someday.
So, you said you had information on those black-shirted fighters.
Tell me why you never had a family.
For the lieutenant colonel, and one from the major. Enjoy.
Thank you. Oh man, that steak is good.
I guess I'll have to work harder for that next promotion.
I had Roger pull out some special cuts.
So tell me, why you never had a family?
The truth is, I loved to fight too much.
I didn't think it was the right thing to do.
If I was going to be a father, I wanted to be there.
Did you ever have children?
I wanted to.
My husband, God rest his soul, was in the same unit as me.
We were out on a mission, and everything felt wrong.
When we got back into town, I took a test, and sure enough...
You were pregnant?
Yeah, I took a gest-ob.
Grew fat.
I could feel it moving and kicking.
Austin came home, and I went into labor.
But when the baby was born, he was blue. The quarters wrapped around his neck.
They tried to save him, but he was gone.
That's horrible. I'm so sorry, ma'am.
Please call me Emma, Cole.
I'm so sorry, Emma.
It was, but you know what?
What's that?
I hated that desk job. I wanted to fight too, and I was jealous that
Austin could, and I couldn't. I would have been stuck home all the time after that. I guess you're
right. You never tried again? Austin was killed by an IED in Afghanistan about four years later,
just right before the quake. Is it better to have loved and lost rather than never loved at all?
Don't give me that song and dance, Cole.
I know you've loved.
You're just not on the same team.
And she would never settle down either.
Funny pair we make.
Do you want some wine?
Sure.
You're sure about this woman, Erica?
Without a doubt.
It says a lot coming from you.
William's loss was tragic, but I'm not sure he was right anyway.
Erica is. She's loyal and steadfast.
She's passionate and committed to restoring freedom to this country.
You're putting a lot at risk backing her.
If she can't live up to the expectations, that promotion is going to be tough.
Emma, I would risk my life on it.
The black-shirted fighters are the ones that killed Sergeant Chappie and Sergeant Monroe.
Monroe died in the riot, but the black shirts got Chappie.
Were they after Erica?
Yes. I ran into a few of them north of Vegas.
Couldn't have been the same ones. Who are they?
The Central Region's refugee laws have gotten very strict.
Those people are nothing more than property, and you can't have your investments leaving the region.
They hunt runaways?
Bounty hunters led by a man named T.J. Swenson. His slave caravans go back and forth to Mexico. His territory is not far
outside the new capital. And the governing board is okay with this? He
supplies people for their nefarious interests and his forces have been very
useful so he's tolerated. Rumor has it he works for Henderson. Why would he want
her? Maybe it's at Henderson's request, but this Swenson guy likes collecting people.
From what I've heard, he's a very dark man.
Great.
Where's Erica now?
Safe.
I hope wherever you have her, she has a large force guarding her.
There's some bad boys who are made much more powerful after the quake.
She'll be back before you know it.
Spring has to come first.
Well, it's getting late. Thanks for a wonderful dinner.
I was hoping you would stay for dessert.
I'm sorry, Emma. I don't want to be rude, but...
I could order you, Major.
And I could have you court-martialed for harassment.
You wouldn't.
I'm thinking about it.
I appreciate the offer. It's just bad timing.
I get that.
The offer stands if you change your mind.
Take care.
Have a nice night, Cole.
Oh, sweet complacency.
Oh, sweet complacency. A sweet Complaince and see
Well, Lord knows that I love you
But I can't lay it down
Are you sure you're comfortable, baby?
It was my arm that was hurt, not my ass, babe.
Will you quit worrying about that man and go help Johnny?
That stuff is nasty. I'm not going anywhere near it.
Come and help. You said you wanted to learn to brain tan.
I killed it, drug it here, skinned it, and butchered it.
I think you can do this part.
You want the skin, right?
Of course.
Then go help the man.
Oh, that smells horrible.
Get in there.
You have to rub it all over and really work it into the hide.
Oh, gross.
Oh, my gosh, that's nasty.
Did you know that each animal has enough brain to tan its hide?
Who taught you to do this?
My dad. He used to take me on these survival trips. We learned all kinds of stuff.
That sounds fun.
It was the only time he was all mine, and it only happened once a year.
I bet you miss him.
Nah, all that ended when my mom died.
Hey, baby, I think you missed a spot over there on the left.
Where?
Oh really, you want to play that?
How about a big hug?
Oh no, you get out of here.
Come on baby, just one hug.
Erica, come on.
Come on.
Come on.
Come on.
Come on.
Come on.
One hug.
Oops.
Fine.
There's a group of three men out on the trail.
Coming this way?
Best I can tell, yes.
Everyone, get on your armor and grab your rifles.
Vince, Erica, and Johnny, stay in the cabin until I give an all-clear.
Let's go find Dex, Star.
What do we got, Dex?
Three fighters. No markings. I've got a shot, Bennett.
Do not take it.
Sean, you know everyone in that town.
You need to know if these people are friendlies.
You want me to go down there?
Dex has you covered.
The kid's 16. And one hell of a shot.
I'll go with him. Not a good idea, Star. What if someone recognized you?
Dexter has us covered.
She's as stubborn as your mother.
It runs in the family.
Don't move any closer. You have multiple rifles on you.
You got the kid up on the ridge, Sean?
Hall?
Yes, sir. How the hell are you doing?
Good. What are you doing all the way out here?
I need to talk to Bennett.
You must be Star. I'm Trent Hall.
Nice to meet you, Trent. How did you know my name?
It's in the eyes.
Bennett told me they were blue, but he didn't tell me just how blue.
Thanks. How do you know Bennett?
We worked together before.
You were in the military?
Paul, what the hell are you doing all the way out here?
We need to talk.
Who do you have with you?
This is Justin DeCamp and Amanda Flessing.
I trust them both with my life.
Come on.
The shipments weren't attacked.
They were clearly only targeting the medical facility.
What about the oil shipments?
They are all on schedule.
And you diverted one of them out to Tran?
Yes, DJ.
Do you need more guards for the warehouses?
Yuri took care of it.
Excellent. Fine job, Patrice.
TJ, what are you doing here?
You don't ask me my business.
Yeah, TJ, I know, but... What are you doing here?
I need to get caught up on work.
We need to schedule out next quarter's deliveries.
Show Patrice how to do it.
It's a lot of moving parts, TJ.
I'm sure I didn't hear you talking back to me,
because right now, it seems like that's what I'm hearing.
No, TJ, I'm sorry. That's better. talking back to me because right now it seems like that's what I'm hearing. No TJ. I'm sorry
That's better. It's just that's my job and Patrice has her job
You say one more freaking word and you'll be hanging in the chains on my wall. I said to train her so go train her
Yes, TJ TJ!
What?
I was hoping to run into you.
Why?
I'm a black shirt now.
So?
So, Yuri and Serge are planning a big mission, right?
Maybe.
Is Nate going?
Maybe.
Well, can I go?
Did you ask your superiors?
Serge? Serge?
Serge won't let me do anything.
Good. I understand.
I'll let you know.
Seriously? Maybe.
Thank you, TJ. Get the hell
out of here and go make yourself useful.
Yes, sir.
What the hell
was she all fired up about?
I told her she may be able to go on the mission
To get Erica?
Yes
Serge will never go for that
That's why it might be fun
Probably not the best time for amusement, TJ
He already lost Ryan over this one
She'll pay for that
I don't doubt it
Kaelin, come out here
Welcome home, TJ
Can I get you something?
Is Teresa sleeping?
Yes, TJ.
You're going with Laudner.
What? For how long?
Do you get to ask any of those questions?
No, TJ.
Get your stuff.
Yes, TJ.
Nice, TJ.
She has my mark. She's been trained well.
Rex will love that.
I get to ride that bike when you're done.
Sure thing, TJ.
You got everything? Yes, TJ. You got everything?
Yes, TJ.
You want me to come by for Jamie later?
No, I have a feeling she might still be useful.
Whatever you say, TJ.
When I look into your eyes, I want to shed a tear.
But I don't want no surprises to get the hell away from me.
I've never been allowed access to a meeting before. It's a real blast.
Francis Butler, James Smith, and Rhonda Wilhelm.
The meeting is almost over. Gene Simmons and Robert Love.
Ricky Mahoney.
Sarah Escobar.
Boyd Patton.
Glenna Fisher.
Dolly Gillespie.
Kurt Harrison.
Aisha Petty,
Morgan Martin,
and Dean Muller,
oh, sorry, Dean Mullen,
Chad Farstreet,
and Ken Tapia.
If your name was not called,
please remain in your seats.
Thank you.
Who are they?
Landowners. They didn't make the annual quota.
What will happen to them?
Their family and anyone else living on the property will go to a FEMA camp.
This land will be given to the neighbor with the highest yields.
That's horrible.
That's why we're changing it. Remember that.
I will, sir.
Verges, thanks for meeting with me here.
We have a window, sir. I'm going to get them.
I know it's a tall order, but I want Johnny back here first.
Sir, if I can get them all, isn't that the best idea?
The longer I leave them, the greater risk of them being found.
I know who's pursuing her, and I don't want to lose Johnny over this.
Do you understand? Yes, sir. I have stood behind you all the way. Do this for me. Yes, sir.
Safe journey, Cole. Thank you, sir. Beggars of us all, ander, and Spotify with my co-host, Andrew Bobo.
You play one mean game of Uno, young man.
Thank you, thank you, no problem.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, who the best?
Mr. Best needs to get ready for bed.
Oh, come on, one more game? You heard your mom. It's time get ready for bed. Oh, come on. One more game.
You heard your mom. It's time for bed, buddy.
We've got an early morning tomorrow.
Do I get to work in the new form?
Yes, sir. So get to bed.
Good night.
Paul, come with me to get some wood. Really? Bennett takes them outside?
They're just getting wood
No, they're not
They're making plans
I can go help them
That would be so obvious
Would you guys stop speculating?
They'll be right back
Still thinking they're not planning something?
No, they're definitely up to something.
We should be good to go tonight.
What's going on?
Same plan, Erica.
As soon as spring breaks out, we're on the move. You spend all the time thinking about that?
Our community is low on meat.
That's why we're out so far.
We have plenty to share.
Are you sure, Mom?
There's no way we can eat all that meat, and spring will be here soon.
Winters can't last forever, right?
Sure feels like it has been forever.
Yeah, but it's been nice.
Quiet time with family.
Nothing better than that.
Couldn't agree more.
It never lasts long, though.
And you have to leave your friends behind again.
Hopefully this will be the last move, guys.
It will be the last move.
A new home where we can live a normal life.
I may not go that far.
I doubt life with Cup cupcake is anything but normal.
Baby, come inside.
You'll never know what you might find.
And maybe you'll find that there are better days if you leave these days behind.おやすみなさい I'm going to stay at Susan's tonight.
No, you're not.
TJ, don't be silly.
I'm not. You're staying here. Susan's coming.
All that banging next door is driving me crazy. I haven't been able to sleep all day.
There won't be any more noise tonight.
TJ, I've never been your prisoner before.
Please don't make me one now.
Do not make me raise my voice to you.
You're staying here.
There's no other option.
Do you understand?
Yes, TJ.
I'm going to see Mr. Lee. I'll leave a guard until Susan gets here.
Send them if you need me.
I'll be fine. I just need a rest.
I'll be back later. More and more I find myself growing passively entertained.
TJ, my son. Just the man I was looking for.
The scout came back. Hernandez is missing.
He's a cripple. How far could he have gone?
He's the one who's after me.
Where's Jamie?
In my cell.
Does he know she's alive?
How the hell should I know? Her brother didn't know. Don't get
smart mouth with me, son.
Yes, Mr. Lee. I can put out the word
to the handlers that she's going to be for sale.
There you go, boy.
Use the bait to set the trap.
We intercepted
an interesting transmission.
Virgis is
communicating to a free town east of Helena.
That's it. She's there.
I think so.
Has the weather broke up north?
Sergei and I are from Russia, sir.
A little snow will not stop us from bringing home your bounty.
One of you has to stay here.
I will.
What are you talking about?
The colonel wants this bounty, TJ.
I know, but Hernandez wants me.
He won't expose himself for anything less.
He will for his daughter.
I'm not willing to risk Teresa's life on it.
She's dying, TJ.
And she's going to be comfortable while she's doing it.
She's a lady, Mr. Lee.
I know what she means to you.
Mr. Lee, sir. What did you bring home? Nothing, sir.
We lost half the squad. Get out. Yes, sir. This shit is unacceptable. Our reputation with the colonel keeps us in business. Hernandez is the linchpin. I know it.
Everything else has been exposed.
Make sure this goes right,
Yuri.
Bring her in.
TJ, get this shit sorted.
Yes, sir, Mr. Lee. Oh,
oh,
oh,
help me, I can't
shake this feeling away. Help me, I can't shake this feeling away
Help me, I feel like I'm going insane
Help me, I got nowhere to go
I'm afraid
Help me, help me turn this around
It finally looks like spring.
Good morning, baby.
I saw Robin this morning.
Spring is on the way.
Were you waiting for me to get up?
No, Bennett has me doing gear prep.
If Virgis shows up, he wants us to be ready.
Then spring really is on the way.
Yep.
What's up? It's been so nice to have a break.
Yeah, but we're gonna get to see my parents and we'll have a real home. Where are you off to?
Some morning PT with Master Sergeant Bennett. Sounds fun. Actually, it's been great. He knows all kinds of cool exercises to get my arm working again.
And it's starting to come along.
Look at this gun.
Sexy, sexy, Mr. Show-Off.
Vince!
I could eat you up.
Mmm, I could eat you up.
Hey, you two, get a room.
You coming, Vince?
Or do you want me to come back in a few minutes?
Shut up.
I'm just saying, if a man needs a few minutes to finish things up here with his honeydew,
I can come back later.
Honeydew?
No, we're all done, Captain Cantaloupe.
Don't give me that crappy salute, Cupcake.
I'm coming. Though my horse not lonely, that's the start of lighted journey. Even when things are looking down.
Margaret asked Sergei if she could come with us.
What'd he tell her?
He told her yes.
Is Nate on the squad?
No. Mr. Lee is leaving him here to help with your mission.
I don't think that's a wise choice.
It was Serge's.
At least if Nate was going, he would be there to protect her.
Don't worry.
She's a black shirt, and I'll be there.
Bring her home, Yuri.
I'll bring them both home to you, DJ.
Enjoy, you two.
Yuri, travel safely.
I will.
I'm heading off to bed.
I'm exhausted. I will. I'm heading off to bed. I'm exhausted.
Good night.
Come in, Susan.
Hey, TJ. How'd you know it was me?
Teresa's here. It's only a matter of time until you show up.
How is she doing? She went to bed early. She's tired. I'll go check on her.
That was delicious. Thank you, DJ. Of course. You go get that girlie and bring her to me, Yuri.
Don't worry, my brother.
Don't worry, my brother.
Hi, TJ. Can I talk to you for a minute?
Sure. I don't have enough going on right now.
I'm sorry, TJ, but this is about a traitor. Can I sit down?
No.
Oh, okay.
What do you have to say?
I... well, I have reason to believe Patrice is working for the militia.
Get on your knees right here.
Yes, TJ, I'm sorry, but... Shut your mouth.
You've been given a position of honor.
You, an assassin that I broke.
Your loyalty and dedication to me and your love for Teresa have earned you that position.
But don't ever, ever, don't you ever test me.
Yes, TJ.
You understand that your life could be very different, very quickly.
Yes, TJ.
What evidence do you have to accuse Patrice?
One of the oil trucks is missing.
She sent it on an alternate route.
I ordered her to send it to Tran.
Oh.
Are you giving her my job?
You don't ask me my business.
I worked hard for that position. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, TJ. I didn't mean it. TJ, what are you doing? Go back to your room.
No, TJ. Teresa, it's okay. It's my fault. Just go back to bed, honey. TJ, please, don't hurt her.
Susan, lift up the back of your shirt.
Yes, TJ.
Do you see the initials on her back, Teresa?
She belongs to me.
I allow her to be with you, but remember who she belongs to.
Now go to bed.
Yes, TJ.
Get on your feet, woman. Yes, TJ. Get on your feet, woman.
Yes, TJ.
Come with me.
I know what you mean to her, so don't ever make me do that in front of her again.
Do you understand?
Yes, TJ, I promise.
How do you like it?
It's a nice house.
Come look.
There's a beautiful garden, and look at the hummingbird feeders.
Look here.
It's just like a hospital room.
Teresa can't work at my home anymore.
It's too much for her.
This is for her?
I'm giving Patrice your job because you have a new job.
You're going to take care of Teresa.
But I want you two living here.
She's in too much danger to live at your house.
Yes, TJ, whatever you want.
Good girls get rewards.
Don't question my loyalty again. Yes, TJ, whatever you want. Good girls get rewards. Don't question my loyalty again.
Yes, TJ. This is so great. Can I tell her? No, I'm going to show her tomorrow after she's rested.
Oh. Tell her you made a mistake, but don't tell her about her home. Yes, TJ. This is amazing.
You've earned it, and I would give her anything. Thank you, Vince. Keep on going.
Bennett! Burgess is back!
Vince, can you make sure that Erica has the gear ready?
I'm going to meet him out on the trail.
Will do.
Major Cole Verges, aren't you a sight for sore eyes?
Nice to see you survive the winter.
Are we moving out?
Not exactly.
Dexter, why don't you go see your parents?
But he just said we weren't leaving. I want to know what's going on.
And I will tell you, but right now, I need a minute to talk to the major. Shouldn't my parents be a part of this conversation? Where's Johnny?
Out checking traps with Sean. Can you go get him and make sure he's got his gear ready?
You're taking him? I am. Now, can you please go do that for me? I guess so.
That boy is full of piss and vinegar. It's nothing compared to his mother.
True.
I've been ordered against my better judgment to take Johnny home first.
Why?
McClintock is concerned for his boy's safety.
Doesn't want him traveling with Erica's family.
The feds?
Not just the feds, Bennett.
Bounty hunters employed by the colonel.
The ones with the black uniforms?
From what I hear, these are some badass fighters.
They're like ghosts.
Erica's family killed that crew.
Exactly. So you know they're coming.
You need to stay ready.
I'm taking Johnny down to Billings,
putting him on the train, and I'll be right back.
All you have to do is keep them alive until then.
Tell me that you're ready, man. Down on the road, the stairs are in my eyes. I don't think we should tell them.
I've been thinking the same thing.
Can we protect them and they have a chance at a new life?
It's a risk, but I don't want Erica freaking out and doing anything irrational.
Are you sure you got the right girl, Major?
She trusts you.
You need to convince her to listen to you without question.
You do know who Erica Moore is, right?
I know who she is, and that's why she's here.
But we need her to lay low until the timing is right.
I'll figure it out.
I'm ready to go, Major.
Stay ready, Bennett. I'll be back.
Yes, Major. Stay ready, Bennett. I'll be back. Yes, sir.
He left?
He'll be back. Why'd he only take Johnny? Yeah,
Bennett. Please enlighten us.
What's going on, Bennett?
He needed time to get the landowner passports
together, but Johnny already has a pass.
He could have stayed for dinner.
He's got to go to Billings, and then he's coming back for us.
The quicker he gets that done, the quicker we get to leave.
What's the rush, everyone?
Would it be so bad to spend a couple more days here?
No, it would not.
We promise for our own redemption From the many times we feel misused
When it happens once, then it happens twice
Don't you realize the world ain't changing
The minute we see that The minute we see that
The minute we fix this
There's no more in the way
