Starting point is 00:02:28 Month, each Friday we'll be releasing an episode for my new podcast with the story pirates. Historical Records. It's an explosive fusion of hip-hop and history, tailor-made for music-loving kids and families. In today's episode, Nemoneh travels to Texas to witness Emma Tenneuca, Fight for Workers' Rights, and Broadway star Mandy Gonzalez performs a brand-new hip-hop track about the pioneering labor activists. This is historical records. The show that proves in order to make history, you have to make some noise. What's that wringling sound, you ask? Oh, nothing. Just this awesome scooter I found. Can you believe it was just lying on the floor of the bunker?
Starting point is 00:03:17 Perfect timing, too. You see, I woke up this morning and realized just how much history there is. There is so much work to do, and we here at historical records are simply not working fast enough. But this scooter will help me get it all done. First, let me put out my helmet. Then let's see just how fast I can go. Hey, robot voice. Robot Voice, initiating.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Initiating? Hurry up, Robot Voice. I need you to time me while I scoot to the other end of the hall. There's no time to lose. Accepted. Okay, start the clock in three, two, one. How long was that? 4.3 seconds, a new record.
Starting point is 00:04:04 I've gotta need this. How much work I can get done! All the historical figures I can learn about, all the songs I can write. Oh, this is going to be my most productive episode. ever! Listeners, it's time to get this show on the room! History, you got to have struggle. To make history, you got to show poise.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Cannot be quiet, loud as a riot. To make history, gotta make some noise. Historical records, where we conduct highly experimental experiments, combining history and hip-hop. Working at top speed gets me a bit winded. But those are the brakes. Or I guess these are the brakes. Anyway, today's episode is about labor activist Emma Tenegucca.
Starting point is 00:05:08 But before we get to her, there's so much work to do. First order of business, check in on Tina and the rest of the raccoons and see how today's beat is coming along. I'll just give a knock here on the studio door. Hey, Tina. Sorry, I hope you don't mind that I open the door, but I couldn't wait for you to open it. Time waiting is time wasted. Anyway, I'm checking in on today's beat.
Starting point is 00:05:32 And whoa, what is going on? You're doing yoga? Yoga! Take to finish this song today! Well, if you already finished the first half of today's beat... You'd better get started on the second half. Chop, chop to it. No time to waste.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Let me turn off these yoga tunes so you can focus. I said no time. I'm off to check on Phil the hype man. We need Phil to be ready with his A-plus hype game, or we'll follow behind schedule! Off to Phil's office! I can't believe I caught those raccoons slipping! How are we gonna get everything done if we don't do it fast, fast, fast?
Starting point is 00:06:18 Hey! Maybe I should look into adding a laptop connection to this scooter so I can get even more work done on the goal! Oh, look at that! I'm already at Phil's office! Even though robot voice and the raccoons were doing some new-age lolly-gagging, there's no need to worry about Phil. It's basically a human energy drink, so there's absolutely no way.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Away, he'll be. Party of people say what? Yeah, Nimny, where? Oh, he even hypes when he snores. All right, Nimini. Don't be distracted by how cute Phil is when he's sleep hyping. Get back to work and wait this man up so we can get to work. Phil!
Starting point is 00:07:00 Phil! He's still fast to sleep. Thank goodness Phil is a textbook hype band, so he always keeps an air horn nearby. And in three, two. Two, one. Yeah, turning. Woo-hoo! Oh!
Starting point is 00:07:21 Hello, Nimny! Hey, Phil. Quick question for you. Ooh, I bet it's a good one. Lay it on me, Nimody. Sure thing. Phil. What were you doing, sleeping?
Starting point is 00:07:31 Ha, tough but fair. I just felt like my batteries needed recharge, and you know? Since there wasn't any hyping to do, I thought maybe I'd make like a cat and take a quick nap. Miao. Phil, there is always hyping too. do. Carpe Diem. Cease the day. Rise and grind. Okay. Rise and grind. What am I grinding? I don't know. Coffee beans, maybe. Here, take these.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Are these coffee beans? Yeah. But you don't drink coffee. Philly, my man. Is that what a hype man would say? I mean, yeah, coffee! You know I'm always on the coffee grind, espresso drip. That's more like it. Gosh, I'm glad I found this scooter. I'm getting so much done. Now, off to the library to check on Gabe, today's historian. And look, I'm ahead of schedule.
Starting point is 00:08:23 I'm working faster and smarter. I'm headed for the library. Good thing I was wearing my helmet. Nimini, I heard a huge crash. Are you okay? I'm fine. Sorry about your books, Gabe. No worries.
Starting point is 00:08:44 The books are fine. I'll clean them up after lunch. Lunch? Yeah, this is my lunch break. Today's Panini Day. Yum. Game, there's no time for my historian to take lunch. We have to explore the life of Emma Tenayuka, write a song,
Starting point is 00:08:59 and now we have to put away these books. We can't fall behind schedule. What schedule? The one that we don't want to fall behind. Nimini, really? Don't worry about it. You just crashed a scooter. You should sit and take a break.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Have some of my pinini. I've got extra. Panini? More like Panino. As in no time. We have to get to today's historical figure. If you're still hungry, I have a great idea for eating on the go. I call it on the goulp tube for gulping food on the go.
Starting point is 00:09:28 That sounds awful. By awful do you mean efficient? I do not. Food isn't meant to be gulped on the go? Lunch breaks are good for people. And they're good for workers. They are? They are.
Starting point is 00:09:44 There's something Emma Tanayuka would have passionately supported too. Did you know she believed in workers' rights so strongly that she went to jail? Really? That's amazing. I need to see that. Where's this week's history simulator? You're standing on it. The scooter? Yep. I was wondering where I left it. Let me just flip the simulator switch on.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Ready to go! Aren't you forgetting something? All right. My helmet. Now we're ready to go. Welcome to San Antonio 1920. Ooh, this place is busy. There's singers, speakers, people waving newspapers. Are we in some kind of plaza?
Starting point is 00:10:32 We are in the plaza. Plaza del Zacarte, to be exact. It's known today as Millen Park, but in the 1920s, it was the place for Mexican Americans to exchange news and ideas. It was where a lot of social... Socialists and anarchists would come and spread their ideas about radical social change. I've heard the phrase getting on your soapbox, but I've never seen anyone actually do it. But look at that guy over there with the newspaper. What's he doing?
Starting point is 00:11:02 He's reading the latest news from Mexico. There was a recent revolution where people fought against the government. Some people had to flee, and a lot of them ended up here in San Antonio. So they're anxious to hear the latest news about the new government back in Mexico. Hey, I see a little girl. Is that who I think it is? It sure is. That's a young Emma Tanayuka, here with her grandfather. He's helping to raise Emma, and he's making sure she learns everything.
Starting point is 00:11:29 So he brings her here. Mika, go and listen to the different speakers and bring me back some interesting news. Yes, abuelo. Oh, look at her run. She's so eager to hear the news. Oh, she soaks up all the energy and political discussion in the plaza, like a sponge. The plaza is her. her school outside of school, where she learns about religion, socialism, labor movements,
Starting point is 00:11:52 the injustice of segregation, and the struggle of the poor all over the world. Oh, here she comes. And she is wanting. I wonder what she heard. Abuelo, the railroad workers have voted to go on strike. Very good, miha. Very good. She can't be more than what? Eight. How amazing that she is learning all this stuff. such a young age. She's off to a radical start. Wait until you see her in high school. Now it's 1933 right smack in the middle of the Great Depression. People all over the United States
Starting point is 00:12:33 and the rest of the world are having a really hard time, making a living and getting enough to eat. I see Emma. She's under that tree reading a book. Emma is always reading books. She's a junior in high school where she's both a star athlete and a star scholar. Did you know she formed a after-school reading club? Awesome! I love books! So do I. And so does Emma. Looks like she's reading The Advancing Proletariat. What is that?
Starting point is 00:13:01 It's a booklet published by the Industrial Workers of the World. The IWW, also known as The Wobblies, are an international workers' union that was founded in 1905. That pamphlet is encouraging workers to unite and use their collective power to fight for better treatment. She's learning about workers unions at 16? Oh, yeah. She's learning all kinds of advanced stuff.
Starting point is 00:13:26 She reads enthusiastically about the wobblies, Thomas Payne, Carl Marx, Tolstoy, Charles A. Beard, and more. Do you see the size of her book bag? How does she even carry it? Santa can never. Hey, who's that boy approaching Emma? Oh, that's one of her classmates. He's a member of one of the school's Latino groups. Hello, Emma.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Como isas? Hello. Hmm. He looks like he wants to ask or something, but he's hesitating. Probably because he already knows the answer is no. He's part of the League of United Latin American citizens, and he wants Emma to join their cause. But why would she say no?
Starting point is 00:14:05 Because this group and other groups like it advocate for something called assimilation. What does that mean? They want to gain acceptance in society by acting more like the white people who often treat them unfairly. Mama knows that they want her to join just because she has lighter skin, meaning white people might be more willing to accept her.
Starting point is 00:14:25 But she's only interested in a movement that helps all people. Ah, I see. Oh, now she's getting up and packing her book away. Where's she off to? She's on her way to the Fink Cigar Company to join the picket line. What's a picket line? I'll show you. Let's go. We've arrived at the Fink Cigar Company.
Starting point is 00:14:49 See that big group of people walking in front of the factory? They're holding signs and chanting. Strike! Strike! Strike! Strike! That's a picket line. It's one way that workers fight for better treatment. They refuse to go into the building to work and instead stay outside and protest the low pay and the bad working conditions.
Starting point is 00:15:09 And there's Emma! She's holding a sign! Yep. At the young age of 16, Emma is joining the Fink Cigar Company strike. Police whistle? What are the police doing here? Nobody here is in danger. Business owners don't like it when workers go on strike. It costs them money, so they often use the police to try to break up the picket lines and force the workers to give up their cause. You there, you're under arrest. They're arresting Emma, but she didn't do anything wrong.
Starting point is 00:15:39 It'll be okay, and Emma will be okay. In fact, getting arrested is what inspires her to go on to make history. Let's go to 1938. It's January 31st, 1938, and we're outside of the delicious pecan company. Ooh, pecans. That explains the delicious smell? Are we stopping for a snack? No. We're here because this is where Emma Tenayuka made her biggest contribution to the workers' rights movement. Nimini, what do you know about shelling pecans? Pecans have shells?
Starting point is 00:16:15 Not once these workers are through with them, but shelling peacons is hard, dangerous work. These women work seven days a week, all while being exposed to respiratory diseases like tuberculosis. And they get paid less than $2 a week. Oh, that is so unfair. Emma thought so too, which is why she took up the cause. Look, there she is, giving one of her trademark passionate speeches. Workers, we must unite against these unfair conditions. La Capitana, La Capitana. La Capitana.
Starting point is 00:16:49 What are they calling her? La Capitana, which means the captain. They've unanimously elected Emma as their leader, and they're about to follow her to the picket line. We can no longer tolerate these terrible working conditions. We are on strike. Strike, strike, strike! There are so many of them.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Almost 12,000 workers walked off the job. It's the largest strike in San Antonio history, and it was the first major Mexican-American action. for civil rights and economic justice. I can't believe Emma is leading this huge movement. She's only 22. Oh, no! The police are coming to this strike, too? Yep. The mayor of San Antonio sent the police out with tear gas and clubs to break up the picket lines.
Starting point is 00:17:41 This is an illegal gathering. You are ordered to disperse immediately. Strike, strike, strike! These workers are not backing down. That's right. The Pecon Shellers went on strike for a whole three months. Teneyuka's passionate speeches brought national attention to the strike and earned her the nickname La Pasionaria of Texas. Historians today regard the strike as the first successful large-scale act
Starting point is 00:18:06 Mexican-American struggle for civil rights and justice. Amazing! I can't believe someone would care so much about fair working conditions that they'd risk getting arrested or beaten up. Or something worse. Emma received a lot of threats. of violence and death. Just for striking? Sort of.
Starting point is 00:18:25 Emma was a member of something called the Communist Party. In the 1930s, people were very afraid of the communists and believed that they had to stop them at all costs. It made Emma's work very dangerous. Even the FBI came to spy on her.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Oh my goodness. Did she go into hiding? Nope. She left the picket lines, but spent the rest of her life teaching and mentoring other activists. A lot of people say that without Emma Tenayuca, there may have been no Dolores Huerta or Caesar Chavez.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Let's check out what she said in an interview in her 70s. She still has such fire in her eyes. And a lot to say. What started out as a movement for organizing for equal wages turned into a mass movement against starvation, for civil rights, for a minimum wage law, and it changed the character of West Side San Antonio. The goal of her activism wasn't. a certain ideology or an abstract concept, but simply food, food.
Starting point is 00:19:31 As in food that should be eaten on a restful lunch break and not gulped on the go? Exactly. Hmm. This gives me a lot to think about. I think I might need to make some changes to the way I've been working. Let's head back to the bunker. Hey, all the raccoons are here. I can't wait to tell y'all about Emma Tenayuka. Yes, it is time for the song in. Indeed. Let's turn this history into an epic, show-stopping song for the ages, featuring Broadway legend Mandy Gonzalez. So, here's what you need to know. Years 1938 in San Antonio. Striking for our right to get what we're old.
Starting point is 00:20:37 Strikes running long, though, and the mood is low. Just want a little mo, but they still say no. Up to 20,000 strong, our numbers grow. This ain't ever happen in the U.S. Bipo. Three months without work, we've been off the flow, and we don't know how long that the throng can go, like a powder cake that's about to blow, but thank God we got a leader to control the flow. Management had us working long even on the weekends,
Starting point is 00:21:08 making only peanuts, yet we be shelling pecans. Needed some hope, a young sis, the beacon. Enter Emma Tena Yuka, here's what she's speaking. Get fast looking through ya, poorly treated how they do ya, Anedota simple to ya, For my una gestura, Organize a new producer
Starting point is 00:21:32 For stronger than mazurka Yours am a than our youth Parents were poor but practical But in the plaza at night with her ramps She would listen to the radicals She read words magical Picked up common sense from Thomas pain and from marks she learned of capital. First Georgia strike at 16 she was a natural arrested at the
Starting point is 00:21:59 protest which made her fight more fanatical. Her plight was rational living under the fists of capitalists with their bacchanals. She joined an org found a lack in the leadership, especially bad at reaching the Latina membership. After high school she led more and bled more, read more manifestos now Emma seen as Redmore. The Peacan's strike. She runs it at 20. Workers getting poor conditions and low funds Emma's on the front line The crowd is at a low hum on the megaphone she is shouting out this bow Oh Sokiduia
Starting point is 00:22:33 Poorly treated how they do ya Aneedote is simple to ya For no one a hexanized a new producer For stronger than mazuka Yours and mutte deals but they still be passing up Sick the fours We march en masse, but the brass tear gassing us. Oh, now they're targeting our comrade Emma.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Speech is so powerful, they are like an antenna. Broadcast it wide from the press to the wrong manner. This creates in the movement of strong dilemma. There's a rift of the leader of the strike with gasped us applied to try to make the people stop, but consequently Emma lost. She's official to control for our teens. Secured her raise until the greedy came and stole our dream. Few months later, we're replaced.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Poorly treated how they do. I continue to. Poorly treated how they do. For stronger than, poorly treated how they do, yeah. The dough is simple to you. For stronger than mazuka. Yours and more than our yuca. We'll be right back after a few words for the grownups.
Starting point is 00:25:31 A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me. Clever Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
Starting point is 00:25:48 And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. Starting point is 00:26:15 and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right what you need to be. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:26:34 In 2023, former bachelor star Clayton Eckerd found himself at the center of a podcast. a paternity scandal. The family court hearings that followed revealed glaring inconsistencies in her story. This began a years-long court battle to prove the truth. You doctored this particular test twice in someone's, correct? I doctored the test ones. It took an army of internet detectives to crack the case. I wanted people to be able to see what their tax dollars were being used for. Sunlight's the greatest disinfected. They would uncover a disturbing pattern. Two more men who'd been through the same thing.
Starting point is 00:27:09 Greg Gillespie and Michael Marantini. My mind was blown. I'm Stephanie Young. This is Love Trap. Laura, Scottsdale Police. As the season continues, Laura Owens finally faces consequences. Ladies and gentlemen, breaking news at Maricopa County as Laura Owens has been indicted on fraud charges. This isn't over until justice is served in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Listen to Love Trapped podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. There's two golden rules that any man should live by. Rule one, never mess with a country girl. You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes. And rule two, never mess with her friends either. We always say that trust your girlfriends. I'm Anna Sinfield, and in this new season of the girlfriends,
Starting point is 00:28:05 oh my God, this is the same man. A group of women discover they've all dated the same prolific con artist. I felt like I got hit by a truck. I thought, how could this happen to me? The cops didn't seem to care. So they take matters into their own hands. I said, oh, hell no. I vowed.
Starting point is 00:28:23 I will be his last target. He's going to get what he deserves. Listen to the girlfriends. Trust me, babe. On the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Ego Wode. My next guest, you know from Step Brothers, Anchorman,
Starting point is 00:28:47 Saturday Night Live, and The Big Me, Money Players Network. It's Will Ferrell. Woo. Woo. Woo. My dad gave me the best advice ever. I went and had lunch with him one day. And I was like, and Dad, I think I want to really give this a shot. I don't know what that means, but I just know the groundlings.
Starting point is 00:29:05 I'm working my way up through, and I know it's a place that come look for up and coming talent. He said, if it was based solely on talent, I wouldn't worry about you, which is really sweet. Yeah. He goes, but there's so much luck involved. And he's like, just give it a shot. He goes, but if you ever reach a point where you're banging your head against the wall and it doesn't feel fun anymore, it's okay to quit. If you saw it written down, it would not be an inspiration. It would not be on a calendar of, you know, the cat.
Starting point is 00:29:36 Just hang in there. Yeah, it would not be. Right, it wouldn't be that. There's a lot of luck. Listen to thanks, Dad, on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Oh! I could really. feel Emma's passion coming through in every beat and every note.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Great work, raccoons. One other thing. I'm sorry I was pushing you all so hard earlier. Seeing how hard Emma Tenayuka fought for workers to be treated fairly made me realize I was taking fair work and conditions for granted. People fought to earn those rights, and I shouldn't be so quick to forget that. Thanks. Hey, have you guys ever thought of starting a union?
Starting point is 00:30:21 Yeah, here's a pamphlet. It's called So You're a Raccoon who wants to start a union. I got it from Gabe. I know it's pretty specific. Leave it to Gabe to find the perfect literature for the moment. Hey, Nimadhi. Oh, hey, Phil. Just the hype man I was looking for.
Starting point is 00:30:41 No need to finish that sentence. I know exactly what you want to hear. Don't worry, I've been hyping non-stop. Since we had a little talk, I told Tina that she made the sickest beat I've ever heard. I told some birds outside the bunker that their nest was off the hook, and I told robot voice, I won't stop hyping until it gigahertz. Actually, Phil, I was going to ask you to take a break. What?
Starting point is 00:31:08 I want to apologize for interrupting your nap earlier. Going forward, you can take all the naps you need, as long as we aren't too behind schedule, of course. Of course! I'll wear this giant alarm clock for a reason, you know. Oh, I thought wearing clocks was just the standard hype man uniform. It is! But it's because being a hype man requires impeccable timing,
Starting point is 00:31:31 including getting up from naps right on time. Yeah! Awesome. Oh, hey, are you interested in joining a union? Here's a pamphlet. So you're a hypeman who wants to join a union that's made up of mostly raccoons. Dimini. How did you know?
Starting point is 00:31:49 Peruse that at your leisure. At my leisure? Or shouldn't we rise and grind? Nope. I hereby declare that we have finished our work for the day and so we can spend the rest of the day taking care of ourselves. In fact, I think today is the perfect day. Oh, she's pausing.
Starting point is 00:32:07 So you know the rest of this sentence is gonna be good. To open up the bunker pool. Yay! Robot voice! Please open the door to the bunker pool. Activating door. And when you're done, take a nice long break and join this poolside. You've earned it.
Starting point is 00:32:27 Thank you. I am overcome with emotion. All right, y'all. Last one in the pool is a stab! Who wants to play Marco Polo? I do. All right, robot boys. You're it.
Starting point is 00:32:41 Marco. Halo. Marco. It's going to be difficult to win this game without a corporeal. How's the water, Phil? Water is dope. Come out in and play around a Marco Polo with us. I will. Just give me one second to end this episode. Listeners, thanks for joining in today and for going on a journey with me to learn about legendary labor activist, Emma Tenayuka.
Starting point is 00:33:09 And a huge thanks to today's musical guest, Mandy Gonzalez. We'll be back next week with another episode, another song, and another hero. For now, it's time to get in the pool because it's my turn to be more. Marco. Until next time, remember, to make history, you gotta make some noise. Bye!
