As we all grow up and mature, of course, we start noticing some things about our childhood that
maybe was normal and maybe not so much. So growing up as Dave Ramsey's daughter, there were definitely
some things that they did a little differently. So stay tuned to find out what I mean and make
sure to like, subscribe, and share this episode with a friend. All right, we love our families.
We do. And as I look back at kind of the quirky things the Ramsey's did, I will be honest.
Most of them, I'm like, I'm so glad they did that because I think it really established who we are
as adults today. So I am thankful for it.
but it is funny. So one of the first things that was probably not very normal growing up in the Ramsey
household is that you were on commission, you never got an allowance. And they made sure that we
said those words. Yeah, you don't get an allowance. You get a commission. So you work,
you get paid. You don't work, you don't get paid. So I grew up with chore charts and paydays
and envelopes of where to put your cash as like a six-year-old. And that has been ingrained in me
ever since. Also an abnormal thing is one of your Christmas things.
gifts that you get when you are 15 years old is a debit card. You get your own student checking,
and they would decorate a poster board and be sitting with all your gifts. And it's like this
streamers and like a big deal, you get that in contact lenses. Those were like the two big
Christmas gifts you would get. And at 15, yep. And so I remember, yeah, getting a checkbook.
And I had a knockoff Louis Vuitton wallet that I had in New York City that I got in the eighth grade.
put it in with my check register and a debit card, and I thought I was awesome. I thought it was amazing.
But yeah, at 15, yeah, you had your own debit card. I remember going to Hollister, and they asked for my
ID, and I was like, I don't have, I don't have an ID because I hadn't had my learners permit yet.
And he was like, I don't think I've ever met someone with a card who doesn't have an ID.
And I was like, I just need to get that T-shirt, dude. That's all I'm needing. So, yep, that was
that was it. Nowadays, you know, parents open up credit cards and they're
kids' names and try to build their credit and all the things, but no, no, Dave Ramsey, the opposite.
The opposite, yep. All right, number three, it kind of relates to number two, but whenever you
bounced a check, which I did at them all, probably at Abercrombie or Hollister, you actually
had to go down to the bank in person and apologize to the branch manager for lying. So, yeah, I was
15 or 16 and got a notice in the mail that I had overdrawn my account. And they, they were
There were fees and all this stuff, and I didn't have money, but I was writing checks, and they print your checks, like, on the paper and the mail so I could see my handwriting.
I was like, oh, no, but it was like $18 at Hollister.
I mean, it was just all these stupid things I was doing.
I wasn't keeping up with the money in my account.
So I bounced checks, and her dad was like, that's lying because you're spending money that you're telling the store that you have in someone's bank, and you don't have that money.
So you have lied to the store and the bank.
So we're going to go down and apologize to them, and I did.
But he waived my overdraft fees.
So thank you, branch manager, back in 2003, whenever that was.
All right, if you're looking for a more budget-friendly way to handle medical costs,
make sure to check out Christian Healthcare Ministries.
CHM has no enrollment deadlines, and you can choose any doctor or hospital you want.
And that kind of freedom is big, especially if you're self-employed between jobs or you just need more margin in your budget.
And right now, CHM is offering new members a 50% credit towards the job.
their first month of membership. So get started at CHministries.org slash budget and use promo code
Ramsey. That's CHministries.org slash budget promo code Ramsey. All right, number four,
weird things we had to do as Ramsey kids. We all had to read Dale Carnegie's book,
how to win friends, and influence people and give a book report on it when we were in the eighth
grade. So, yep. And then in high school, I actually went through the Dale Carnegie speaking
course with a bunch of 50-year-old men and me. Yeah, Dale Carnegie, real hero in our household
growing up. Number five, when I was 16, I had paid for half of my car. So this may not be too
crazy. I think probably a lot of people watching this. Didn't even get a car at 16 or you had to
save up and pay for your own. But we always did, well, dad would call 401 Dave, so he would match
whatever money we would save. So it kind of was unfair a little bit, because when they put this in place,
my sister, who's two years older than me, kind of got the short end of the stick. She only had
like three years to save or four years. And then I had two years on her, and then my brother
Daniel's four years younger than me. So he had a lot of time to save. So the cars got nicer as
each kid went along because we had time to save money. Oh, but Denise and that Hunter Green
Mustang will never forget it. Never forget. Number six. Speaking of cars, I remember
riding around with my dad. And you would either be listening to the Eagle.
or Zig Ziglar, Earl Nightingale, or Charlie Tremendous Jones.
So, yeah, so there was no music except for the Eagles.
And then you got all 80s inspirational speakers telling you that you are what you think about.
And that's what we heard down I-65 growing up.
Love it.
Oh, man, it is funny looking back and being like, that was normal.
And then you say it out loud to people and people like, that's not normal.
That's not normal.
Now, there is one thing that should be normal, though, right, in all of our households,
and especially if you have kids, is teaching the basics when it comes to money, right?
And that is one thing I do very much thank my parents for, you know, their quirky ways of doing
it really does.
It shapes who you are as an adult.
And so I know for my kids, those lessons are so important, but also lessons about
contentment and generosity.
I mean, there's so much around the heart of money.
And that's one reason I wrote my kids' books.
I wrote three different kids' books, and the illustrations are beautiful in them, but to teach
these principles to our kids.
And I do think it's important to have this message that's being said over and over and over
again that they understand generosity and contentment.
So I'll put the link down below for those books.
You can check it out if you have little ones at home.
