Starting point is 00:00:05 All right, I love the phrase, spend like no one is watching. And I love this because it gets to sometimes my core motivation when I started asking myself a few years ago of, if nobody sees this purchase, do I still want it? So stick around to find out why it might be a smart financial move for you to spend like no one is watching. And make sure to like, subscribe, and share this episode with a friend. So sometimes we realize that sometimes we don't of why we spend money. And comparison is always a cycle that we can get into. This is human nature.
Starting point is 00:00:37 But for most people, on most days, we don't need that mindset, you guys. So here are three things I want you to try next time you go shopping or you want to buy something to make sure that you're not subconsciously wasting money on the comparison game. Number one, ask yourself if you're spending money to impress other people. Now, most of our need-jerk reaction is like, no, of course not. No, no. But listen, sometimes, you know, it's not always obvious. And so if you get an immediate endorphin boost, that is very normal. That happens to us physiologically, like when we buy and spend the money. But also, after that kind of dies down, it's like, okay, why am I excited?
Starting point is 00:01:19 Am I excited for people to see it? Am I excited because it kind of gives me like an ego boost to feel like I'm doing really good? You know, whatever the thing is, if you feel like this purchase is going to help you have less FOMO or not feel left out or feel like you are part of the trend, part of the culture, all the things. These are all indicators that maybe your motivation is a little bit off. Now again, when I say all of that, most people are like, oh, no, no. But also, most of us are just making decision after decision after decision. And we are living not being so aware of what our motivations are, which is why number two
Starting point is 00:01:56 is so important. I want you to be still. And I say this because when you stop your mind from circulating, you actually keep your body still. There is something about that that calms not only your nervous system, but also calms your mindset and why you're actually doing things and actually being able to get to the root of different things. And maybe this is a conflict you add with friends or a spouse or maybe it's a struggle and anxiety you're having with many of your kids or like, I don't know what the thing is in your life. but giving yourself margin to be still and be quiet and actually listen to your thoughts,
Starting point is 00:02:32 asking yourself questions, giving yourself margin, you guys, that is a healthy place to be. And that includes our purchasing. I'm not kidding. So like if you find yourself like, oh, I just, I need some of this, I need some of that. Just be still for a second, even wait 24 hours and understand like, why am I doing this in the first place? All right, I'm going to share number three in a second. But first, I do want to tell you about one of our amazing sponsors.
Starting point is 00:02:55 delete me. You guys, data brokers have gotten more creative and are actively becoming more of a threat because they are out there on the internet, collecting your data and selling your data to data brokers, and that puts you at risk for scams and fraud. This is why I love and use Delete Me because it removes your data to help protect you from fishing, harassment, and other online threats. Your family safety and financial security are way too important to leave exposed. to go to join deleteme.com slash rachel for 20% off, bring your monthly cost to under $9 or just click the link in the description. Starting point is 00:03:34 I highly recommend you do this because when you are working the baby steps, your bank should not be working against you. And that is why I love Fairwind's Credit Union. Their smart checking and savings bundle was literally designed to line up with the baby steps. So if you are ready to move your money somewhere, that supports your financial goals. Fair wins is what you have been looking for. Just head to fairwins.org slash Ramsey
Starting point is 00:03:59 to open your smart checking and savings bundle today. Okay, so now that you have clarified your motivation of why you're spending, let's move on to number three. And this is find a new why. Because if your motivation is not great, I would say, just don't do it. Like don't get caught in the comparison cycle. But if you can find a deeper why of why you're spending
Starting point is 00:04:19 to me that always allows, that purchase that I make to extend the joy of why I'm doing it. Because sometimes if you just do it for a quick hit, if you're like, I just need to do a pair of earrings, and that's it, it's me, but if you make a purchase and there's actually a deeper Y underneath it, golly, that is so refreshing. So Winston and I had this huge goal for five years of building a pool. And we were like, okay, we got to save because we had a cash flow. Yes, the no debt philosophy is real. And because of that, we were like, okay, let's figure out, you know, why do we even want to have this in the first place. Is it convenient? Yes. Obviously. But that deeper, that deeper why
Starting point is 00:04:59 for us was like our kids, like they're going to be hitting middle school soon. And we want to be the house where the kids come over. Like we want to be the place where people can come and enjoy what we have because we want to share that. We want to be with people and open the doors of our home. And the pool is one of those kid magnets that like that's going to happen. That's even why when we built our house, I wanted a great pantry because I was like, I want great snacks. Like, I want the kids to come to my house and be like, we want to go to Ms. Cruz's house. We want to go Rachel's house because she has great snacks, right? Because I'm like, yes, I want all the kids here. Like, that is what I desire, especially for my kids in their childhood. And so there's something about that that, yes, the pool is
Starting point is 00:05:36 great. It is convenient. It's wonderful. But what we've gotten to do with that with people was a deeper why. And that joy of that purchase, of that big goal, gosh, extended through it all. So you don't have to have this, again, with, like, buying a pair earrings. There may not be why. You just may think they're cute. But especially your bigger ticket items. If you can find a deeper why to that purchase, it's going to bring you more joy longer. All right.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Remember, when it comes to spending, it's usually not always a no forever. Sometimes you have to put up those boundaries and say no, but not always forever and ever. So it's always a good practice to check your gut and make sure you're spending for the right reasons at the time. And another discipline that has changed my life is practicing contentment. My contentment journal is on sale tomorrow, November 11th for just 899. And there's some other great products that we have as well, but this can be a great practical gift or maybe just something for yourself to walk through. Now listen, this doesn't even scratch the surface when it comes to comparison spending because it's a pretty big deal. So be sure to check out my episode, The Surprising Cost of Today's Beauty
