Starting point is 00:01:01 More on them in just a bit. Uh, Roxy, are you ready? Yeah. All right, let's go. Roxy, how did you feel about the Zach Snyder classic? That is 300. Yeah, I mean, I really like Zach Snyder. It's not like every frame from every movie.

Starting point is 00:01:30 always agree with but in general i love i i love like his words to his people i think he's an awesome director um i'm a big dc nut and i've heard this movie reference a thousand times um and i've even like seen images from a you know where people will show you like say this is spot or whatever um but i didn't think i was going to love this movie as much as i did because there's just so many movies that i feel like are kind of similar to this that i've seen and i like the most but this one really kind of stood apart from the rest it has a very distinct look which i thought was really cool and served the movie very well and then truly no joke like the um his what the queen for that one scene where she is one of the greatest scenes i've ever seen in my entire

Starting point is 00:02:19 life because you always think in your head like i wish he would just kill him but that never happens right and they gave us exactly what we wanted you know um that was just so i was like Yeah, that was amazing. And then also just the strength in defending the people that you love, knowing that you're going to die, the epicness of the story, I just thought it was great. They did a great job. Yeah, I thought the same.

Starting point is 00:02:45 I love me an underdog story, and this is definitely the pinnacle of that. I understand why people love Zach Snyder so much. And my love of Zach Snyder varies from film to film, but I would say this definitely stands the top for me. actually that this is second top of me um i think the snider cut is still like probably my favorite film of his and this is like probably like neck and neck are you a watchman fan i'll be so honest i've seen like one time i barely remember oh you should do that i would love that that would be fun yeah i really like watchman yeah watchman's cool but this is probably

Starting point is 00:03:19 my favorite of his movies honestly that i've seen this was so good yeah i think all the acting was really great again love the underdog story love the visuals love the the sound you know both the sound design and the soundtrack was just super cool super iconic you know we get to see the pinnacle of what it means for the zach snider snow slow mo to be in effect and it'd be really effective i like their choice of i don't know i think the way that they were able to show their odds and how they were still unstoppable in spite of the fact that the odds were against someone known to believe in them but were able to triumph on top was just peak you know and

Starting point is 00:04:01 I don't know I really dig this one this movie had a lot of really dope stuff going for it yeah I think that you know in life we all try to fight the fights we think we can win sometimes that's not the point of fighting a fight sometimes the point is fighting a fight because it's the right thing to do

Starting point is 00:04:17 and they're all a strong moral character and you need a leader like Leonidas to really inspire that and he was his courage and his bravery and his cockiness were, is the spark of the fire that lit them to that eventually had the rest of the Spartans come and fight. And I presume that they win. I don't know. I don't know history that well. At least this part of history. But, yeah, I think that was a great way to end

Starting point is 00:04:43 this movie. They do. Otherwise, there'd be no grease. Well, maybe I learned a little something today that I probably should have known a long time ago. But hey. But I didn't know the part of this where it was the 300 of them first to die in order for then a year later for that to and we would have to give ourselves a total history lesson. I don't remember learning about this since I was I think maybe I was 12, 11

Starting point is 00:05:07 when I took this in school right? Is that how you learned about Athens and Sparta? I probably learned. I got a lot of memory gaps. I don't even know if I learned this. Okay so I remember learning about this back in the day and I remember that they are enemies. The

Starting point is 00:05:23 lesson of this as a kid was sometimes you have to team up with your enemy to defeat your bigger enemy so the enemy is my friend exactly so um i that's where i think of what i think of of the spartans but i did not know this part of the story i still don't know how much of it is taken obviously king leonitis is real uh the spartan 300 i'm assuming king xerces but you know the the interpersonal relationships i'm not sure how much of it is i'd be curious i really hope that that queen is real and i really hope that she handed that guy as fucking ass She's a badass.

Starting point is 00:05:58 Yeah, I got to look into that. Yeah, we've got to see what's going on there. Yeah, I enjoyed the entire experience, you know. The dialogue was so great, too. Just so many classic lines. Yes. So poetic with the way that they were presenting. And I feel like it's interesting because it's one of those movies where it obviously takes place a long time ago.

Starting point is 00:06:18 They didn't speak English. But the way that they're able to have dialogue that's both accessible yet poetic in a way that's not super heady or abstract, but just enough for you to be able to be like, that was freaking cool. Yes. I respect it a lot. And I wonder what other. It's not silly. It didn't take me out of it. Some stuff was a little goofy, but that's my shit. I love stuff that's like over the top in an absurd way to kind of emphasize the point of what they're trying to illustrate there. Like the one guy getting speared and him just like flying off for like five miles. That was crazy and i loved it um yeah the this is like the the again the pinnacle or at least the

Starting point is 00:07:01 the inception point to my experience and my knowledge of zach snider as a visual storyteller like his ability to not have to have dialogue to illustrate either the um the the stakes or just the uh the odds of what we're going through like that like that one image of them like kicking them all off the cliff was like super iconic and I think I've seen like snims to that image before but also the shot I've never seen somehow in nearly 20 years is the with all the daggers that was crazy yeah with all of them kind of and then pulling back I'm like this is like like a Greek photo or like I don't know something that painting painting thank you yeah it was wild I did want to circle back on the Michael fastbender stuff because you and I were both like wow we did not know he was in that so Michael fastbender has 210 credits on

Starting point is 00:07:51 IMDB so stick with me as I kind of work my way through this. This was not even close to his first credit. However, it is the first credit that I recognize perhaps you guys would recognize some of these. He was in

Starting point is 00:08:07 Poirot, the TV show. Apparently that ran for 20 years. I don't know what it is. He was in 12 episodes of a show called Hex. He was in four episodes of Murphy's Law. he was in an episode of William and Mary

Starting point is 00:08:23 Sherlock Holmes the case of silk stalking the movie so it seems like a lot of TV shows probably a lot of UK stuff but a ton of things and then he did 300 after 300 he did another TV show called trial and retribution he did a movie called Angel

Starting point is 00:08:43 he did a TV movie wedding bells all of these things a bunch of different movies up until he did in Gloria's Bastards in 2009 um and then glorious bastards yeah is lieutenant archie highcox you do not remember that movie then um he was in blood creek and then centurion and then jona hex

Starting point is 00:09:08 so never seen jona hex another dc um then he did jane air and then he did um go robbie was in that show too in what's job no i'm sorry i'm thinking of pan air you said jane air are you thinking of pan am yep margot roby was in pan am yeah with christina ritchie yeah that was her first thing that's so great her first american thing i'm glad that you made the mistake because i didn't know that so now i you just want that's good for me you piece it together between the two of us being wrong that's great x-men first class was in 2011 so that was so shame was in 2011 as well but two movies after that oh wow

Starting point is 00:09:50 Man does not stop, then did Prometheus, 12 years of slave, more X-Men movies, Macbeth, just like, and we know the rest, so, so many. Starting point is 00:13:30 Oh my God, yeah, Adrian Brody has been the last couple of years. He's made a huge comeback. He's everywhere now. But you don't, you're not a TV guy ever. He does more TV. There's a ton of stuff. Let me tell you his most recent credits. I've seen him in like seriously so many projects recently.

Starting point is 00:14:05 He was in the movie blonde Which was tough to get through He just did the brutalist Yeah he's been been all over the place. But he's not in this movie, though. He was in a couple episodes of Succession, Front Dispatch. I think I like First.

Starting point is 00:14:22 No, no, you just asked me to look at Adrian Brody. I did. That was my mistake. Yeah, six episodes of Peaky Blinders. It was so good in that. So, yeah, they'd be working. They'd be working. Different roles, different things that you want to do.

Starting point is 00:14:36 Oh, that movie was so fun. It was very fun. I had such a good time with it. Apparently, there's a prequel. I don't know if people like the prequel or don't like the prequel. What's the called? 300 something i think it's it's linked after this with who 300 rise of the empire came out in 2014 directed by not zach Snyder uh gnome murrow oh yeah you know it's almost 10 years after rise of an empire rise of an empire with eva green and lena hetty

Starting point is 00:15:11 You know, Heady comes back. Cool. If it's a prequel, I wonder if Homeboy comes back or Butler. What makes you think it's a prequel? I think Greg Settos is a prequel. Grossies is back. Oh, leading the Persons courses. Oh, maybe it is a sequel.

Starting point is 00:15:27 I have no idea. I don't know. I've never seen it, obviously. There's a 45 on Rotten Tomatoes. Ooh, that's unfortunate. It's real unfortunate. Yeah, it says it's a prequel. Guys, you think the Spartans drank water with their ass apples.

Starting point is 00:15:41 Let us know. Frigerware. What? Fisherware? Yeah. Probably wasn't clean. You know. They had access to clean water back then.

Starting point is 00:15:51 Just murky river water, wherever rivers may be in their vicinity. Where are you going with this? I have no idea. I'm just trying to think of, you know, cool 300 facts. I want to make some up at the top of my head. Did you know that the Spartans ate pineapples before? Do you want me to give you some real ones?

Starting point is 00:16:11 I would like that. Okay, director Zach Snyder originally wanted Brad Pitt. That's so funny because that's the one question I asked Greg. I think I said it was Brett Pitt in this. Originally wanted Brad Pitt for the role of King Leonidas, but Pitt turned down the role due to other commitments, Mr. Mrs. Smith. Dr. Butler had 17 helmets made for him, each representing a stage of degradation throughout the battle. Good job reading rocks. The Battle of Thermopylae.

Starting point is 00:16:39 Thermopylae is often taught to military strategists as an example of the advantages of training, equipment, and good use of terrain as force multipliers. Yeah, that's cool. It definitely shows. I dig it. Okay, let's see. This one's a little bit long, but it's got a lot of like, so I'm going to try it. The script demanded that most of the male cast spend the majority of their time on their screen time bare-chested as per Frank Miller's original graphic novel. Thank you, Frank Miller. To adequately represent themselves as the most well-trained and marshaled fighting force of the time, the entire principal cast underwent a rigorous eight-week training program regimen, organized by Mark Twight,

Starting point is 00:17:21 a world record-holding professional mountain climber. Actors never repeated the same exercise twice, preventing the body from adapting to any one type of exertion. That's crazy. Gerard Butler, my guy Jerry B., has said that the training was the most difficult thing he has ever. had to do in his life when it was over twice admitted that he pushed the actors as hard as he's ever pushed anyone before including himself wow that is crazy how many hours a day on average do you think jerry b spent in the gym for how long two months for our butler spent an average of four hours a day training in a gym for over four months did i say four months or two

Starting point is 00:18:09 He said two months. But you did say four hours. Yeah. That is a long time. That's a lot of work out. Okay. At 40 minutes, the quote, then we will fight in the shade is from the Spartan warrior Dianikis,

Starting point is 00:18:22 Dianakis, when warned about the enemy's arrows, it's also on modern Greek soldiers uniforms. Wow, okay. What are you doing that? I'm done. You did that? Okay, cool. You want to guess the Rotten Tomato score?

Starting point is 00:19:28 The audience is 89. Critics was 61, which would be, is pretty guessable because critics don't usually love this kind of movie. This is badass, though. It is badass, but it's a little over the top. You know, Zach Snyder's slow-mo, some of the very stylized effects of it. I could see them. The fact that it's fresh means that it was really good.

Starting point is 00:19:50 Okay. Well, I disagree with the critics. Yom much talking about, but that's okay. That's the truth almost always. That's the truth, Ruth. Okay, guys. Roxy. Roxy.
