Episode Date: June 15, 2026There is no crying in baseball, but there is definitely some intense debating! Jackie, Tara, and Paige are stepping up to the plate for our official A League of Their Own movie reaction and review! We are looking back at Penny Marshall's iconic 1992 sports masterpiece to see how the legendary Rockford Peaches hold up today. In this highlight cut, we react to Tom Hanks delivering one of the most iconic comedic performances of his career as the blunt, loud, yet secretly lovable Jimmy Dugan. We break down the incredible scene-stealing chemistry between Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell (including that wild wide-shot dance floor flip), celebrate the incredible casting, and dive headfirst into a massive debate over the final play. Did Dottie Hinson drop that ball at the plate on purpose to let her little sister Kit win, or was she just genuinely steamrolled? We also discuss how this classic formatting compares to the representation in the modern Prime Video TV series. Paige, how do you feel about
this movie that we just
watch? I missed it. I loved it.
I, you know, of course
all of the female camaraderie
was fantastic.
I feel like a lot of it really held up.
Yeah.
A lot of things that are really sticking out to me
were the moments on the bus.
They were the sweetest moments.
Learning to read.
Overcoming a shitty boyfriend.
Totally.
And even I actually really love the
very platonic friendship between
Doddy and Dukin.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
They had a really sweet moment on the bus too.
I really, really enjoyed all of those.
Yeah.
For sure.
That was good.
I love those, too.
What about you, girl?
How are you feeling about this?
I really, really, really enjoyed it,
especially as someone that was a fan of the series,
the tragically canceled series.
It was nice to actually watch the original source material that it came from.
Yeah.
I will say I feel like just because we did talk about the series,
I was the only thing they kind of missed for me.
We didn't have one lesbian player on the team.
I know.
I feel like I did go into the movie expecting there to be some, like, representation.
I mean, this did come out what in the late 80s.
Yeah.
So even though we're, you know, out of the 40s, we're still not all the way there.
But that just surprised me for sure.
It was a missed moment for sure.
The series they have a lot of it.
Yeah, you said it was.
That's what made me think of it.
Oh, okay.
I didn't know that.
Okay.
Yeah, that's cool.
The series is great.
The series is great.
Okay.
How about you, Tara?
Did you love that more, though?
Oh.
Did you, you love the series more than movie, this movie?
Well, you have a longer time to be connected to a series.
This is how I always feel about series.
You have a longer time to be connected to it.
And also a bunch of my favorite actresses are in it.
Like, my favorite comedic actresses are in it.
Yeah.
They have a great cast.
I mean, we didn't have Rosie Adonald.
I mean, this ensemble cast was pretty.
I mean, everybody's chemistry.
I mean, they're all.
actresses we know and love, but to see them all together, to see their chemistry together was
really cool. Yeah. What I will say, though, is I feel like the series did take a lot of the
archetypes of the characters from this film. So really, I love both of them, you know. Yeah, yeah,
I love that. I thought they had a really, I mean, the writing in this script is done really well.
They have a lot of great callbacks. We basically started the movie and ended with it in the same
lines. I did not know that this was based on a true story until the end. I was like, wait,
what? I had no idea. But I love that we start out with like nag, mule. That's like, it's all the same
lines that the way that we begin is the way that we ended, which I love callbacks. And they had
a few in here, which is great. I think the casting is really what made it. It's like almost unmatched.
Everyone in this, even the guys, the fans, like I think that one guy with the glasses, I mean,
a lot of the short curly hair, blonde guy. Yeah, what else is he in? And everything. I mean, it's like
Everybody in this, even when you look at them in the audience, especially I think this was released in the like the 90s or the 80s.
They worked all the time.
Kid?
Now in my brain, I believe that she is in the adventures of babysitting and she's the girl that holds the rat and the phone.
If not, she might be in the Mandalorian a lot older, meaning the Mandalorian now the show and works on planes.
You guys will let me know in the comments because that's what you do.
if I'm wrong or I'm right
but I loved her in it
and also Gina Davis so good
I think Gina Davis was in
Did you guys watch Glow?
Glow?
Yeah, the rest of the show?
Wasn't that Gina Davis where she comes in later?
I don't know.
I don't know.
The series glow?
Yeah.
I didn't finish it.
Yeah, she like later on
I think she, it was Gina.
I might be getting her confused
to somebody else but I thought
I thought she was amazing in this.
I liked that.
So the fun part about
watching these movies that are made back in the day is that you can't get this movie made now with the
stuff that they are saying nothing was like fully outright but you just wouldn't be able to do it it
wouldn't get past now we're kind of the the pendulum is swinging to where like people are like
bring back being like racist and rude you know what I mean um but specifically for this script
there's some stuff where I realized back in the day they're putting that in for comedic effect sure
And we wouldn't be able to get that now.
So it does make it more fun to watch and interact with because you're not going to see that type of writing.
Not that I'm saying like, hey, yeah, okay, go for it all the time.
But I think it could have obviously been a lot worse.
And I still held up.
It still felt like an empowering of women altogether.
A lot of the writing was done in a very clever way, right?
We're all like, I mean, I'm sure we all rolled our eyes a lot during that movie.
I felt it a lot.
I mean, I feel like the point of the misogynistic language specifically, you know, specifically Tom Hanks, but by a lot of the men, was kind of to point out, like, how difficult it was for them to be in this league.
So I don't know.
I felt like it was an important, truthful representation of how the real women probably were treated, you know?
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
And a truth of representation of how it was in the 80s and 90s.
It's just like, we're not necessarily woke yet.
But they were still feeling very progressive from the 40s.
Totally.
Absolutely.
I love that, you know, that we did get the one moment where I wasn't sure if it was headed to where the girl picked up the ball and she threw it and we're like, oh yeah, let's get some more like make this team or culture, not all white girls.
But like she did not join the team.
I thought that was coming.
I thought it too.
But I liked the close up because I don't know that much about women.
baseball, softball, whatever.
I liked to the close-up where we did
do a zoom in on her. After she threw
the ball, she gave her a look.
We got some eye contact where it's like,
yeah, I got you. Like, if you know,
you know, kind of a thing.
So I'm not sure where that progressed
with them, you know, in the future.
You know what? Tara, it's so
interesting that you say that. Because guess
what does have that?
The series. The series.
Oh, okay.
You guys should watch it. It's really good.
What does it on?
It was, maybe it's on prime.
I'm probably wrong.
I'm probably completely wrong.
I would, I'm sure I would love it.
I mean, it sounds like total.
I love this film.
I think it was so much fun, written really well, very comedic.
And the fact that it's based on it your story makes it extra exciting.
Very cool.
Okay, let's get to some of our patron questions, you guys.
First one is from Maurice Gray Jr.
Says, great movie.
This has been debated for years.
Did Dottie drop the ball in purpose?
when Kit ran her over at the plate,
or did Kit steamroll her that well?
I'm of the second opinion.
I think Doddy's too much of a competitor
to ever let Kit win,
evidenced by her telling the pitcher
exactly how to get Kat out.
What do you guys think?
Oh, what are you thinking?
I think Doddy gave it to her.
Did Daddy never seemed that really invested?
Even though she was the most talented,
she was pretty ready to,
she had one foot out the door most of the time.
I think she did the whole thing for her sister.
Why not handed to her, you know?
And also, I mean, like, Dottie is taller.
I think that she looked stronger to me.
And also, she's been her older sister her whole life.
She can hold her sister.
Totally.
She can hold her little sister back.
That's a great point, yeah.
Please.
She definitely gave it to her.
I think she finally, like, she felt bad.
Now, I do not think that ever in her entire life,
she would admit that to Kit,
because then also that would take it away from care, you know?
Sure.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm, I don't think.
I'm with the ladies on that.
I don't know.
Here's what I'm going to say is that when we do have that discussion in the hallway,
Doddy does seem very genuine of like, well, you know, if you won, you won.
Like, you knocked me over.
You did what you had to do to win the game.
I'm not, I'm not sure.
I do get how that would be a debate in this film because we do go into slow-mo on it, the hand.
It's very dramatic.
It looks like she let it go.
I think she just was like
Knock the F over but maybe
I'd have to like rewatch it
And be like what's the deal with the slow-mo here?
Because we're really
We're really zooming in here
Yeah
And we're slowing it down
So it's supposed to be a moment
It's probably maybe in the director's point of view
To be like let people
Guess right
Let them see if oh did she give to Kit
Or did she not
Did Kit actually win the game?
Because I feel like they have
Kit and Dotty both have different sides
where we learn through the movie,
both different strengths as players.
And I'm really glad that, like,
it would be a very typical move in a script
where Kit goes up there, Doddy is there.
Doddy could speak to Kit and say something
to calm her sister down
because you see she's freaking out.
She's on the other team.
It's not like she doesn't love her sister.
It's like they have to play against each other.
She didn't do that.
She took a timeout and was like,
she can't hit the eye once.
So, but I give her a lot more
respect for that. So I'm a little bit with you on that, Maurice, but I'm a little confused with
the slow-mo and the hand thing. Like, I don't know. She's like, she let it go. I'm like, I think
she just was knocked over. I don't know what to believe. I think it goes back to the whole thing of,
like, even you bring up their conversation in the hallway, she cannot let Kit know. And I think
it was also like a split second decision. Yeah. You know? Right. Right. That's my opinion.
Yeah, girl. We, that's what I think, Maurice.
I believe it.
You can have them.
You can have them.
We like that here.
All right.
Let's do our next one.
Ignation, real quick.
I got a shout out.
DC Studios showcase the official podcast.
Because at the time of recording this,
it really feels like DC is ramping things up.
Supergirl pre-sells are tracking real strong.
We're seeing new images and clips of Superman and Supergirl.
We've gotten a look at Lex's new war suit from Man of Tomorrow from James Gun himself.
And honestly,
all this marketing has been doing wonders to my brain.
It's been making me so much more excited for DC.
I've even been picking.
of so much more comics. Again, the DC Comics app is great, by the way. And that's why I honestly
believe the DC Studios showcase is a fantastic companion piece for fans right now. Because, yes,
we love all the trailers, the theories, the rumors, the discourse, but this show gives you something
different, actual access, real context, and conversations with people who really care. Like last
season, they already had huge DC voices on the show. They had James Gunn and Jim Lee, cast members
from Superman, Superman himself, and other people from across the DC universe.
In season two right now, continuing that momentum.
It's hosted by Frankie Smith, and of course some guy you might know,
guy named Koi Jandro.
And what I love about their dynamic is that they bring two totally different strengths.
Coy comes in with that fast-talking comic brain, film knowledge, deep cuts, trivia, big fan energy,
and Frankie brings his empathy, sincerity, and emotional connection to the conversation,
so they complement each other so well.
So when they interview someone like Millie Alcock about Supergirl,
You feel that balance of intellect meets heart.
It doesn't feel like the usual press junk of questions.
It actually feels like two people genuinely trying to understand the characters, the stories,
and what it means to bring them to life.
So this season, they're covering Supergirl, Clayface, Lanterns, and way more because we know
DC's got way more with interviews already up with like Millie Alcock.
We got Jason Mamoa coming up, Supergirl director, Craig Latsby, sharing onset stories,
personal insights, and everything in between.
Plus, they got some cool guests popping in all season long.
So you can check out DC Studio.
Showcase on the official HBO Max YouTube channel using the QR code on screen or link in the

That's DC Studio Showcase wherever you get your podcasts.
Care Bear.
It says, hi, JT and P.
How old tall was groundbreaking.
As both commercially and critically successful film centering women,
Gina Davis' experience here, partially led to
her nonprofit, instrumental in pushing for greater female representation on screen,
and Penny Marshall's work inspired a new generation female directors like Greta Gerwig and
Ava Duvernei.
Avaduvernae.
Ava?
Is it Ava?
Okay, great.
Yeah.
Cool for me.
Not to mention how this movie changed perceptions of women in sports and boosted
a little four advances.
This film's impact can be overstated.
Is there crying in baseball?
Baseball. Okay. Okay. Got it. Well, obviously, there's not. Is that the only question?
I think they're crying in baseball. It felt like a strong statement.
Yeah, it felt like a statement. Overstated. Is there crying in baseball?
Let's make this a better question. Do you guys feel like this film's impact is overstated?
Do you feel like if people are playing baseball and women's baseball or all around that this film is like,
like not a big deal is it overstated what how do you guys feel about that no i feel like this film was
a huge deal i feel like any film honestly especially for its time especially for time of it today
that like centers women absolutely very largely important what other women in sports movies do we have
right now hot girl i don't know i'm thinking right glow glow that's right that's right
love glow yeah I don't think of any there's not many I can't think of it's not not a ton there's a doc
about the the the tennis sisters yeah I was gonna say Venus and Serena it wasn't that movie
kind of about their dad yeah it was the most part it was about their dad's about their dad's
I never saw challengers was that another tennis one yeah but she gets injured she gets injured
she gets injured really early on so it's mostly about the gay them being gay for each
Oh.
I really can't think of a women's sports movie.
We got to make one, ladies.
Okay.
We got to learn a sport.
We want a movie about women in golf.
It cast me.
Yeah.
Cots me.
Let's go.
No, I think that this film would be honestly understated now.
If there's people who don't know about it, I would say, I'll leave their own.
Is a great film.
I'd be surprised if it didn't get nominated for awards when this came out.
I would assume this is ahead of its time.
Yeah.
We are dealing with a film that has mostly women in it.
Yes, the guy is still being the guys, a typical, like, male behavior.
But it was funny to see Tom Hanks where he's like, I just need you to work on this, okay?
Instead of yelling, you're like, oh, it's a man learning.
That's what they're like.
It's a man learning.
Exactly.
I mean, and at first I was a little disappointed because it wasn't the Tom Hanks.
I wanted. Sure. But he did get pretty lovable. We did see him progress. He tried. And try to be more
kind and gentle with these ladies. What's the Tom Hanks who wanted? You know, like Sully. Like who's,
you know, got on Tom. Yeah. Yeah. I know. The nice sweet dad who I thought was going to, you know,
coach the girls. I know. No, no. He did the best with his alcoholism.
We believed it. We did. We did. And that's what I mean. I kind of grew to love.
of him, you know, in his anger
and fatherly disappointment.
Totally. When he was drunk,
we were like, you're drunk for sure.
You're drunk for a room. They didn't have to tell us that.
We just knew. Yeah.
Because of the acting.
Okay.
Jay rushed in. What position would you play baseball
in a women's league? This movie was filmed in
Indiana. The ladies were talented. By the way,
they're now four Sheejack ladies.
Finally, more diversity there. Thank you.
Jay, you are right about that.
what position would you guys play in baseball?
Can I get a run down up the positions?
What are they?
You play in a pace, catcher, there's shortstop.
So are you better at, so do you think you're better at catching behind like every single
ball?
Do you think you're better at pitching or do you think that you would be better at catching
like from far away?
From farther away or from boom up close?
be the coach.
Okay.
I love this for her.
She has not played baseball one day.
She immediately was like,
let me run the team.
That's where she went.
You know?
Make her coach.
I feel like I'm encouraging.
I'm with you.
Okay.
She wants to be coach.
She wants to bring positive vibes.
But no nothing about the game.
But no nothing about the game.
Got it.
We'll definitely win.
What about you, Jackie?
As someone that used to be,
a softball pitcher, I was not a good pitcher. So I'm not going to be a pitcher. Okay. I think shortstop.
I'm good enough to be a catcher because I'm afraid of the ball. Okay. I'm afraid of the ball if
it's constantly coming at me, but like I'm good at catching from a shorter distance.
That just seems really scary to me, the catching part. The catching part is very scary, I think.
You ever get hit in the face with a ball? No, because I was never the catcher. I don't want to get
him in the face. Love that for you. Yeah. Love that for you. How about you, Tara? What would you, what would
position to be let's think about it ladies what would I do um I did just remember that one time I think I'd be a pitcher did you get hit in the face with the ball no my mom played like a league with her office and she did come home and she got hit in the face with the ball she had an egg she had an egg that's traumatic mm-hmm um you be a pitcher let's pitch baby let's do it right I'm in the mound I like it it feels very powerful we're doing the signals oh yeah oh yeah
Oh, that's why I want to be the coach.
I want to do the signals.
Yeah, the signals are cool.
I'm with you on that.
I'm with you.
I love it.
Okay, let's do some trivia from Star Dess and Memories.
The actress who plays older Doddy is brilliant.
Lynn Cartwright, R-A-P,
the casting director did an incredible job finding someone who looked just like Gina Davis.
Gina did, however, overdub the lines to make it even more difficult.
You called that out.
You called that out.
I did.
I did.
I hate ADR.
I've hated it every time.
If a film makes me go and do it.
it. I tell him you
you messed up so
bad because I hate ADR
so much it's not easy
even when I'm dubbing over
my own stuff. Stop
yeah I hate it.
So that's why I had to say
yeah that was like Gina Davis did an
amazing job
like there is some dubbing
some ADR stuff that you can tell
in the beginning they did a really good job
of directing it making her walk
away from camera as she's speaking
especially when she speaks a little bit faster,
does a few more lines
so that we don't like catch it
that it's not exactly perfect
but for the most part, it was awesome.
It was like legit perfect.
I loved it.
Especially for like back in the 80s dude,
you know, it's not as advanced with the ADR.
Right.
So a great job, in my opinion.
Amazing.
What did you guys think?
Well, you guys were kind of like,
is that her or not?
I really thought it was her.
Yeah, that's right.
I thought it was her in makeup.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, all of the casting,
even at the end of the whole,
Like, did they hire all of their mothers?
Right, right, right.
Like, they are dead on.
The casting director must have had a lot of fun with that one.
Do we have her name on here?
No, we just have the older daddy.
I mean, we can find it.
What are your guys is extra, like?
What's your favorite part of this film?
Mm.
You have any favorite lines, favorite parts that's sticking out to you guys?
All that bust stuff for me, for sure.
I mean, I just love the three line of the bad stuff.
That too.
I love the through line of how so much of the story was centered around their relationship as sisters, you know, because it's just any, any woman, I feel like, can relate to the sisterhood aspect, even if you don't have a real blood sister of your own.
Like, a lot of our relationships are very sisterly relationships.
Yeah, absolutely.
Mm-hmm.
And also, I will say, as someone who doesn't usually love watching sports or sports movies, all the actions, all the action stunt sequences were really.
I was just very invested.
There are a couple times that I was like, oh, my God.
Well, that's cool.
So the casting director on here also did Wolf of Wall Street,
Kells and the Fireman, they departed.
So she does.
She is working.
She is really good work.
She's still working.
She is a lady also.
She is.
Ladies get it done in film.
They take your poop and make it into something.
I'm dead.
Got to do it.
Okay.
Did you give a favorite, do you have a favorite or anything?
Did you guys hate anything about this?
Was there anything that you hated?
I'm just disappointed that it was a completely white.
Oh, okay.
But I mean,
there wasn't a historically accurate.
Well, we feel like there were two things that probably would be done differently today, right?
We would definitely have a queer representation and a woman of color at least.
At least.
Yeah.
Totally.
But again, I mean, you know, I get it.
But it's, well, that was the only thing.
Yeah.
We got us to check out that series.
I guess that it was the 80s.
We're talking about the movie, Jackie.
Fuck, yeah, crap.
The series, the series, the series.
More people should watch it.
They should bring it back.
I'm trying to get it back.
Everyone go watch it.
Fuck it.
Hell, the series.
We get it.
It's a series.
You can't.
I forgot.
Did you produce the series, Jackie?
I produced the series.
My God.
Help us.
Imagine you find out I have like one line in the series.
I don't.
that's great um anything stick out for you miss tara uh let's see i was just looking at actually
right now okay guys i didn't know the budget for this would be 40 million dollars and i'm really
curious how much this movie made what do you guys think wait you can it's down there is it in here
yeah it didn't do good opening weekend yeah okay opening only made 13 but gross world now
it's been a minute yeah 132 wow so they made
for money eventually, but opening weekend
did not do well. Got there later.
Opening weekend didn't do well. Okay. 40
mil is a good budget for all these guys.
It was 92. I thought it was
the 80 as well. I did too.
Yeah, 92.
I think what stood out to me
the most. I've really, really
liked Rosie Adonald's and May's
relationship, her and Madonna being in
this movie and having the relationship that they did.
And their backstory too.
Totally. Right. She's like,
That was the bans.
She's the dancer.
It's great.
She's great.
Go watch a dance.
You're like,
oh my God,
I love everything about what's happening right now.
Especially when Rosie O'Donnell's character went out and she was dancing with a guy
and she's doing,
she's leading the guy around, flips the guy over her.
It's the best because they didn't even do a close up on that that we did see her talk about
that.
She did see I flipped that guy and I was like,
I saw.
We weren't even close up on her and you can totally see her flipping that guy.
around. It's very, very funny. I do, I love how this was directed, so I can understand that Penny
Marshall would be the woman that you're like, oh, snap, all right, that she maybe led the way for
other female filmmakers to come through and make great films that are respected. My assumption is,
is that when this came out in 92, I mean, sure, opening weekend, dirty milk, not great, but
let's see if we can go to Rotten Tomatoes real quick before we, before we do this. What do you guys
think it has on rotten tomatoes make your guesses i would oh you go what do you think audiences
rotten tomatoes is like one to ten one to ten oh run so i'll give i'll give so i think audience
for for this movie let's let's take my guess it's a no it's all good it's up to 100 so rotten
tomatoes i'm going to go audience would be 87% and i'm going to take a shot at the critics
okay i'm going to go high here i'm going to
go 81%. So I'm going to go 87 and 81%. So it's through a zero to like 100%. What do you, what do you think?
Audience, I'm going to say 90. Okay, love that. Critics, I'm going to say 81. Okay. I think that's what I said.
Is it? Sorry. I'm just going to, I don't look on hot and tomatoes a lot. So I'm going to guess that it has a better audience rating than a critic rating. I feel like the critic one.
could be maybe low for this.
I don't think it should be, but...
I need numbers, Jackie.
That's what I asked you for.
Okay, fine, fine, fine, fine.
Give it to me.
Audience 88.
Okay?
Critic 73.
I don't know, guys.
I just named some numbers.
That's fine.
She got nervous.
She couldn't come to numbers.
Numbers make me nervous, too, actually.
Um, all right, let's see.
What the hell?
I'm typing words into you.
Pay attention to me.
A good, good.
All right.
Um, I'm scared.
Let's, why are you not going to what I just typed in?
I don't understand.
Sorry, guys, we're having difficulties.
Okay.
Oh.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
Uh, that's, that's wild behavior.
I am very, tend to be very good at this, and I was pretty close.
Audience is 84 and, and, uh, the critics is 82, meaning we were all pretty close.
Mm-hmm.
We did good, guys.
So this movie is actually did really,
well. You said audience is going to be like 90%. Right?
Mm-hmm. Yeah. They love it, which I'm glad that you guys love it. And I'm glad the
critics did because I think I said like 81% and I'm really glad that it's 82 because I'm like,
this script is good. It's realistic. The fact that it's based on a true story, they added in good
comedy into this. I'm like, yeah, credits, come on now. If they gave it a crappy score, I'd be
upset about it. Okay, guys, any last words before we get the heck out of here?
Last thing, scream them out now.
Take me out to the ball game.
Okay, this is good.
They came up with something.
Take me out to the crack.
They were sitting there with like,
look like deer in the headlights.
Okay, yeah, I'm gonna.
People just want to get there.
There's sometimes crying in baseball.
That was what the song they sang.
I mostly just want to leave.
Okay, bye.
Bye.
