Starting point is 00:00:00 At Grey Goose, we believe that pleasure is a necessity. That's why we craft the world's number one premium vodka in France, using only three of the finest natural ingredients, French winter wheat, water from Jean-Sac and yeast. With Grey Goose, we invite you to live in the moment and make time wait. Sip responsibly. This episode is brought to you by Adidas. When the frustration grows and the doubts start to creep in, we all need someone who has our back.
Starting point is 00:00:31 To tell us we'll be okay, to remind us of our ability, to believe, because their belief in us transfers to self-belief and reminds us of all that we're capable of. We all need someone to make us believe. Hashtag, you got this. Stop. Do you know how fast you were going? I'm going to have to write you a ticket to my new movie, The Naked Gun.
Starting point is 00:00:53 Liam Nissan. Buy your tickets now. I get a free Tilly Dog. Chili Dog, not included. The Naked God. It's on sale now. August 1st. Thank you to Acorns and Huell for sponsoring this video.
Starting point is 00:01:03 More on them in just a bit. Yeah, so as I was saying, I think what I enjoyed about this film, as much as I loved all the world building and the visuals, that was all fun. I really did like the characters, and I liked some of the arcs. I really liked, I think I liked a lot of the parallels of being a loner, rather, and being alone in the universe, in whatever universe you're in in this instance. And, you know, whether it was Henry, whether it was Gargar, whether it was Steve or even Malgocia. Like, they were all lonely in their own rights.
Starting point is 00:01:38 You know, you had Malgocia, I guess, like, she'd been rejected for the dance off or whatever. And then Steve, like, he wanted to be a Minecraft. He wanted to be a real minor. Yeah, real minor, I know. But, you know. Both their dreams are dashed. And then with Gargar, like, you know, he was once this sought after video games. that no one like knew about anymore and then with henry he was very creative in his own right
Starting point is 00:02:04 and again they're all loners but i like that parallel between the the four of them and obviously one of them has more of a kind of a tragic ending although you know she brought it upon herself with evil doing and i i do like that messaging at the end that jack black says like you know you can either what was do you remember the line was he said like you can either choose this path or the destructive past, it's easier to choose the destructive. Oh, it's easier to, it's harder to be creative. Yeah, I like that.
Starting point is 00:02:33 I actually like that messaging because, I mean, when you're in a dark place, it is easier to do that. So I actually did like that messaging because it is true. You know, I can resonate with that because I've been in a dark, deep, a dark depressing place and I personally would never choose that, but I can understand the temptation to want to,
Starting point is 00:02:53 you know, go to a destructive place when you're in that moment. so you know I do again I did appreciate that messaging in a film like this so yeah no I really did enjoy this was a fun time I like that too in in the hour and 41 minutes or however long it is you never really feel the pacing of it as well I mean it was I thought it was actually paced really nicely it didn't feel too frenetic at the same point I'm like holy crap so much is happening at once but also at the same point it lets you breathe in the moments of you know the levity and the comedy and also the character moments and I really enjoyed a lot of the interactions between the
Starting point is 00:03:28 team, between them, you know, coming together and I was really connected with most of these characters and I love Dennis too so much. And just the other, again, the other, the designing of all the other characters, I'm sure it's very accurate to the game.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Again, I have, as we pointed out many times none of us played it, but I thought it was very visually just creative and fun. So what about you, John? How are you feeling? Yeah, yeah. feel pretty good right now. I mean, yeah, I agree with what you guys have touched upon. I feel like it is a very fun and charming and, you know, light and bouncy kind of movie. And without, you know, a great amount of context for what's going on. I thought, you know, it did a good job. Like you
Starting point is 00:04:09 mentioned, you kind of want to play the game afterwards. You know, it does a nice job to pull you in. And it does have a lot of charming setup. I feel like once the movie gets really cruising and we're doing both the, you know, kind of requisite, like, oh, there's some kind of evil army. got to stop them. We got to get back to the real world and stuff like that. And also alongside that, we're doing a whole bunch of info dumping about how the game mechanics works so that we can build stuff. You know, like there are ways in which I thought this could have been a more inspired experience, like along the lines of something like a Lego movie that takes the idea of a similar, you know, brick-based world, you know, predicated on
Starting point is 00:04:47 imagination. That movie really transcends in story every step of the way. Whereas I feel like here, you know, you kind of get your fun endearing setups with the characters and then you're on to like Minecraft related bits. However, it's not necessarily a bad thing and I feel like in an environment like this, it works more than it did for me, say with like
Starting point is 00:05:08 another Jack Black video game movie, which was the Super Mario Brothers movie, which was like, which was fine. Beaches, peaches. Yeah, peaches, peaches. And from what I've heard, he like improvised music here and that one Steve's Lava Chicken I think has charted on the actual like Billboard music
Starting point is 00:05:24 chart or whatever so go jack yeah um and i mean what he's such an like operatic performer in this movie in particular and that was one thing that i was kind of curious about too because i'm a jack black fan but we are at that moment in time and in a lot of you know well-liked stars uh trajectories where like he's in a lot of stuff like this often nowadays playing himself which is fine and which here actually charmed me more than i expect like they fully let Jack Black off the leash just to do his thing and like you were pointing out like he's got every accent
Starting point is 00:06:00 at some point in this movie and he's you know being both a kind of quirky goofy character but also like a badass guy because Jason Mamoa is playing slightly against type and being you know the guy who thinks he's cool but is not is washed up it's kind of like I've never seen pixels
Starting point is 00:06:16 but he reminded me of like what the setup I understand of those characters to be but yeah like the ensemble I thought thought was nice, was strong. I liked watching all the performers. I liked the kid who played Henry, Hank. I liked his sister, who we, there was a brief cut here, and we figured out that is the girl from Wednesday, which I can totally see now. And it goes to show you that, like, just a simple change in hair color can make somebody look like an entirely different human being. So shouts out to Emma Myers. Danielle Brooks, like, her character is a greatly developed character. But I did find her performance super duper charming. the way she played off of the other characters and the world was really fun to watch. Like her dose of humor amidst a bunch of other doses of humor was bright and it's shown, you know, in its own kind of fun way.
Starting point is 00:07:05 I thought, again, Emma Myers did a nice job. You know, Rachel House, who's been in a bunch of stuff lately and is, you know, especially in a lot of those New Zealand-based production, you'll see her pop up a lot. I liked her voice performance. I liked Jennifer Coolidge and the village guy, just the setups to all the characters, too, them moving into this town and her working at the potato chip factory and all that stuff. Like, yeah, there are parts of me
Starting point is 00:07:29 that wish that maybe the script was more inspired so as to like transcend what this is, but for what it is. I was having a good time pretty much throughout, and like, yeah, it does give way to a sort of like bunch of action beats we got a hit, but the world is
Starting point is 00:07:44 appealing and again, the charm of them like crashing different elements together and making tools and the way that they bring some of that stuff to life. this obviously is an effects driven movie heavily, but it didn't feel like synthetic in a way that made it soulless ever, even though you can tell a lot of the environments aren't fully real. There was a lot more real stuff in frame than I was expecting to kind of just like lend it credence and sell it, give that sense of movie magic. And I do think that Jared Hess as a creative
Starting point is 00:08:16 voice was like a good choice for a movie like this because it's like it's a, yeah, it's a bigger effects movie than I would associate with him. But it's about, yeah, this weird, quirky group of characters and they're all in Idaho again or something and then they get pulled into this Jumanji thing. But it has his sort of offbeat
Starting point is 00:08:34 quirk that I think works and bolsters some of the more familiar humorous beats and stuff like this. So like it's not, it didn't like blow my socks off necessarily, but I had a lot more fun with a lot less effort.
Starting point is 00:08:50 than I had maybe anticipated at the outset. So all in all, like, I would watch another Minecraft movie. For sure. I feel like, and I like that they called it a Minecraft movie, because they said, I think, you know, part of the joy is that the games are all about freedom of creation. And so to call it the Minecraft movies to limit the possibilities, the potentials.
Starting point is 00:09:13 But who's that? Who's Colin? Who's interrupting the review? nobody who needs to be spoken to at this moment it is not an emergency it is a spam in the middle of the night
Starting point is 00:09:26 calling me I'm going to turn you into a pork chop gang not a lava chicken I'm going to turn it into Steve's lava chicken you heard it here first gang I want to see you eat that lava chicken right on the spot that's right hey and the textures on that
Starting point is 00:09:42 there were some textures on things that were like kind of disturbing and other textures were very fun and yeah like you know the whole villain motivation is something we've seen a hundred thousand times before and uh you know the idea i i do like that everybody had some kind of crushed a dream that they have to rise above and and you know really flourish into by the end and yeah my filmmaker brain goes man you had all the potential and if you just like enriched the characters and the storyline a little more this could be like a surprisingly great movie but as it stands very fun and and for what it is like just the right
Starting point is 00:10:17 amount of things. So yeah, I would say this was successful by my metric generally speaking. I feel like at the end what really got me where I think they took a good turn with it in regards to the script is when he says, hey, if you're going to go back out there,
Starting point is 00:10:35 you're going to run into hurdles and judgment and the line that really got me, he's like, I'm going to go make stuff anyway. That's literally I just love that line because that is, it relates to me, and I think a lot of people in L.A., where it's like, listen, you're going to go out there
Starting point is 00:10:52 and it's going to be, you don't know what you're coming up against, right? It's a lot of knows, it's a lot of rejection, and then it can be a lot of yeses. And the people who survive are the people who say, I'm going to go make stuff anyway. And that line really, really got to me. And I think them following the tropes of like that when you're creative, you're going to get bullied and like you you might not get picked first in sports right it's like
Starting point is 00:11:21 everything that made you like a total nerd in high school is most likely gonna make you cool in college or adulthood but that that even that time period is going to be rough but we even saw it with garret that like his time let it's still rough like it's still hard out here um so it gives everyone sort of in that age range to relate to that that being created can be hard and sticking to it doesn't mean that it's going to be this great lavish lifestyle, obviously. But you still got to get out there
Starting point is 00:11:54 and do the thing and make the stuff. You do got to make the stuff. You got to make the hard decision, right? And, you know, I want to go a little more too on Jason Mamo's character. I was listening to something earlier this whole video about nostalgic times and how he's like so stuck on living in the 80s
Starting point is 00:12:12 basically. I think like, because that's the one he won the video game thing in 1989 and you know back in in you know when we were kids and why we're so stuck up on nostalgia times it was interesting what they said it was a time where we had less to worry about than we do now as adults you know and that's why we're yeah exactly you know we had less responsibilities and besides all the fun stuff that we did back then and that's why we're we're so stuck on and we still love those things even if again whether it's a movie or whatever even if it's not the greatest thing, like it was a time where things were so much more simple
Starting point is 00:12:48 and less complicated. I'm like, yeah, and I could see so much of that with this, after watching that video earlier, about, like, getting into that explanation about why,
Starting point is 00:12:58 you know, nostalgic things are so important to us. Yeah. And then watching this character, Dissimamoa, just being so stuck on still living in the 80s, I can totally understand that now, especially with his character.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Well, and that's becoming a well-worn sort of, especially as 80s, nostalgia has like fully had its cultural moment and has crystallized and has become sort of its own genre like that guy is becoming more and more of a real guy in the sense that yeah who just cannot let go of this past era um we saw that we saw that too really quick we saw that too like johnny lawrence in the beginning of cobra guy oh yeah that's what i'm saying it's like especially now like that's a guy that's one of the stock characters you can have but i felt like here they did a
Starting point is 00:13:44 job of yeah making him this sort of sad dude and there's you know a lot of fun stuff to find in his little shop set and everything and even I imagine in that storage unit bit but it's not like beating you over the like there is a vacation poster and a
Starting point is 00:14:00 Goonies poster but they didn't put them like right front and center so that they could go look see the 80s we know the 80s you love it don't you shut like you know they made it a little less overbearing than I'm used to seeing it which is nice yeah And, yeah, just a good-natured movie, I would say.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Yeah, it's fun. Yeah, no, it's still worn my heart to see those posters, though. I love both those movies so much. And it did terrifically well at the box office. Oh, it did? I can only assume that Jerry... Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:14:29 Huge. Well, hello again, Hewel, today's video sponsor. Lately, I've been loving talking about Hewle because I've used it as an excuse to give you guys updates on my fitness journey. Back in January of this year, I was 218 pounds. Last time I weighed myself, I'm down to 179, but this time I decided to take a fancy picture. Close to the mirror. Good lighting. And I did have to flex, but I'm making progress.
Starting point is 00:14:52 I'm almost at the six-pack. Look at it. Almost at the six-pack. It's almost 40 pounds down, and one of the biggest game changers for me has easily been. I staying consistent with healthy go-to meals, such as Hewles, Black Edition, ready to drink. As a matter of fact, I just shot a video with Andrew and Aaron this morning. both came without having had any breakfast and of course they were hungry first thing they did they got themselves a hule in the office fridge baby because i bought plenty it's a complete meal in a bottle man it is tasty it's packed with over 35 grams of protein
Starting point is 00:15:28 27 vitamins of minerals slow release carbohydrates and low sugar plus fiber no prep no cleanup just grab it go shoot a reaction or whatever else you do yeah whether i'm filming working out or frankly it tired to cook, which is pretty much every day. This bottle's been a lifesape. It actually tastes good, too. My favorites are like the main ones, the chocolate and the vanilla, but I also really do like their strawberry banana. I also got iced coffee. And when in doubt, you can always go with a variety pack if you don't know which one you want. And at under five bucks a meal, it's top my routine and my budget. And now to be able to provide for the host here. He was already sold over 500 million worldwide. And if you're looking to eat better, stay on

Starting point is 00:18:11 Okay, well, let's go. Let's do, let's do the juice, Tara. Yeah, let's get juice in, man. Okay, so, here, really, before we do, oh, yeah. Really, now you know when we filmed it, guys. Let's do really quick rotting tomatoes, one at a time. Let's go critics first. I know you love the critics scores, Tara.
Starting point is 00:18:29 Let's do it. Well, I just, I don't have a lot of faith in them. So I'm going to go critics. Yep. They probably went 61. Okay, you, you've, now you, critics? 45% 47%
Starting point is 00:18:46 that was one of my earlier guesses okay good job I definitely see this not being so much of a critic audience you audience oh they probably like review bombed this over to like 115% right oh my god I'm gonna
Starting point is 00:19:01 okay 80% I'm gonna go with 84 86% Tara inching it out It's very nice, Tara. If I was on the prices right, I would win because I didn't go over, right? That's right.
Starting point is 00:19:16 You got to go. Let me go. Look at her go. Okay, box office worldwide. We are combining domestic and international worldwide. Tara, you just won. So why don't you go first? Worldwide.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Okay. Am I allowed to know how much the movie was made for? Oh, sorry. Let's do that one first. I apologize. So what was the budget of this film? guys yeah okay um 13 million
Starting point is 00:19:47 13 million wow I'm gonna like 90 million 150 million oh my god 150 million you know I was very foolish to guess under 100 given how yeah with how massively popular this movie is oh my god how pricey the cast must have been my guess just how much then I think they made 300 million 300 million worldwide worldwide maybe they made 350 650 9909 million 6904 1161 I was like I hadn't heard of them cracking a billion yet and I should have guessed 900 like I was thinking 900
Starting point is 00:20:26 God and Jason Mamoa and everyone in this is like a producer there they are thanking them sell I'm pretty sure we're getting the sequel Wow. That is an insane opening. You know what a film does well, normally when you can double your budget. Everyone just aims to go, let's just double it, and then we know you're pretty good. To go like Wackadoo Wild to where you not only like tripled it, but did way more than that. That's amazing. Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 00:21:00 And really quick, I put this on Google. The post-credit scene in a Minecraft movie sets up a potential sequel by introducing Steve. to a mysterious woman named Alex who is the second default playbill character in Minecraft. This scene along the mid-credit scene where the villager nitwit learns to speak human and Marlene learns Villager
Starting point is 00:21:20 is a playful way to tease future storylines and connect the movie to the game's lore. Oh, okay. The rich will have to study up again. I'm sure all the fans of the video game when they saw Alex were going crazy. I wonder who it is. Well, we only saw the back of the head,
Starting point is 00:21:38 so I'm sure they did that on purpose. It's Karen Gillen. Yes, it's definitely carrying on. Well, I'm sure they did that. So when they cast whoever, they weren't obligated there. They weren't sure this was going to turn a profit. Right. We can't promise anything.
Starting point is 00:21:50 That's true, too. I can't promise anything. That's true, too. The film was originally going to be directed by, let me guess. Who would direct this? Can I have a hint? Let's go directed some episodes of Stranger Things? Oh, Sean Levy was going to do this.
Starting point is 00:22:10 They were going to free guy this. But he left the project after disagreements with the Minecraft developers as they thought that his idea did not suit the game. Oh, well, got to stay true to the Lord. There are many references to Napoleon Dynamite, one of Jared Hess's earlier films, such as the troublesome al alpacus, the story of tater tots and pants pockets. Oh, my God, I don't remember any of this. And the self-defense training dojo, the t-shirts having a similar design to the vote for Pedro's shirts. Oh, I had the vote for Pedro. Jack Black was set to only appear as a cameo in the form of a talking pig.
Starting point is 00:22:49 But due to the 2003 Hollywood labor disputes, Black taking over the role of Steve after Matt Berry had to vacate the rule. What? Matt Barry was going to be Steve. Wow, that would be very different. Yes. Wow. I'm surprised that that was an idea at all. given how blue he likes to get. Not that he would be allowed to, but just the association with him. I can see it. Weirdly,
Starting point is 00:23:13 I could, knowing nothing about Minecraft, weirdly, I can see that working a lot, but also you know, Jack Black is a well-documented, like, friend of the games, just video gaming in general, so it makes sense. There was an incident during
Starting point is 00:23:29 a showing of this movie in Provo, Utah, where the crowd went wild during the chicken jockey scene and even brought in A live chicken to the screening. Oh, my God. Killing it, gang. Steve's Lava Chicken by Jack Black
Starting point is 00:23:45 entered the U.K. top 40 at number 21 on April 18th, 2025. It's not just Jack Black's biggest hit. It now also holds the record for the shortest UK hit at 34 seconds, beating the previous record holder, the Lady Braves by Johnny Trunk and Wisebee by two seconds. What?
Starting point is 00:24:03 That's so cool. Oh, my God. Way to go. Jack. Jack. Jables, man. Jables. Dang, man. That's cool. Going to have to do a Minecraft Tenacious D. Concept album. We got some spoilers here, guys. Let's go and spoil the movie for us. When the film had its original screenings, many cinemas had to issue warnings before a particular scene when Steve mentions the chicken jockey. As people would throw popcorn and generally overreact for the scene causing huge messes for the cinema workers to clear up.
Starting point is 00:24:34 Jack Black also made a surprise appearance at one. of these screenings to give out the warning in person to the crowd. Surprise. Wait, I'm sorry. Is this the thing that y'all do when you go watch wrestling and you're throwing popcorn in there? What's going on? People are saying the
Starting point is 00:24:50 chicken jockey fight happen and they're throwing popcorn. I don't, what's going on? Why are you all bringing live chickens and you're throwing popcorn? I don't. Why aren't you? I'm sad. You're not. Clearly you're not dedicated to Minecraft.
Starting point is 00:25:06 clearly you're not a real fan you're fake fan all right you would be out here riding a chicken just like me and Andrew me and Andrew got tandem chicken I can't believe it and we got this like you know that that that game where you push a little vacuum around to the balls pop
Starting point is 00:25:21 we just took the lid off I love those dump popcorn on it spray that shit everywhere those are the best all right last one last one there are movie posters for the Goonies National Lampoon's vacation and beetle juice and Garrett's shop
Starting point is 00:25:38 All of those films were distributed by Warner Brothers I did not see that Beatogist poster unfortunately That's cool Otherwise I would have made a reference to it You know what I mean guys You should have You could have done you up in makeup For the whole rest of the movie
Starting point is 00:25:51 It's done for that one part guys It would have been fun Doing good Hey but that's all the fun facts we got guys Well golly I wish we could go into the creation room And grab some materials Make some more facts
Starting point is 00:26:05 But it's all good. Those were pretty juicy, like a Steve's lava chicken leg, gang. I just, hold on. Just let me know in the comments if you went to the movie and you're like, we were absolutely throwing popcorn at the precise moment that the chicken jockey happens. Did you go hogglob for chicken jockey? Yeah, who and also who brought the live chickens and did you also bring lava to want to know that? Like, I just got to know.

Starting point is 00:26:43 Bring us into your world. Maybe we'll take the plunge next time, put the cubes together, hop through the portal, and start crafting minds ourselves.
