Netflix’s Alice in Borderland (2020), based on the manga by Haro Aso, delivers a thrilling mix of survival, suspense, and psychological drama as Tokyo residents are mysteriously transported into a deadly alternate reality. Episodes 1–3 introduce viewers to Arisu, played by Kento Yamazaki (Kingdom, Your Lie in April), a disillusioned gamer who suddenly finds himself forced to compete in brutal life-or-death “games” alongside his friends. Nijiro Murakami (Destruction Babies, And Your Bird Can Sing) stars as Chishiya, a cunning and mysterious strategist, while Tao Tsuchiya (Orange, Rurouni Kenshin) plays Usagi, a skilled climber and survivor who becomes one of Arisu’s key allies. Aya Asahina (Tokyo Alice) portrays Kuina, who emerges as one of the most intriguing and resourceful players in the Borderland. The first episodes also spotlight Daikichi Sugawara as Karube, Yūki Morinaga as Chōta, and Nobuaki Kaneko as the sinister Hatter, introducing fans to the dark hierarchy of the Beach society. Key moments from these episodes include the jaw-dropping opening transition to the deserted Tokyo streets, the shocking first “tag” game inside the abandoned building, and the devastating outcomes that force Arisu and his friends to confront the brutal stakes of this twisted world. These early episodes set the stage for the themes of loyalty, betrayal, and survival that define the series. Join Tara Erickson and Alexander as they dive into the tension, character arcs, and iconic sequences that make Alice in Borderland one of Netflix’s most binge-worthy sci-fi thrillers. Blay season one
episode one
three to one
I click for
okay
well thank you guys
if you're listening
to us on Apple or Spotify
give us a five-star
do all the things on youtube like comment subscribe ring the bell ring the bell i don't know how to review that i am shook by those
three episodes yeah especially that last one that was insane i i didn't think they'd have the balls to do that
especially so early god like i was like all right is our show with our free our three friends we're
going to go on an adventure we're going to buy this game right nope it's almost like you know the show
has really obviously incredible actors incredible set like all all of great writing it's almost like
it really is written about the will to live and friendship because that's what we start off on
the family your real family that you're like born into uh you know it's he's he's
obviously not appreciated but then he finds you know his home with these three friends
that's our freaking link that we think we're going to see through to the end right and they're
dead immediately like this this show has shown that they don't hold back nobody is safe nobody
is safe because like we got a whole backstory and like oh this stuff about the other friend's job
and then like he has the stuff with the girl and he survived the last
game and like oh he's going to be ruthless he's going to be a problem throughout the whole season
nope because he's dead and he had all those the prayers and we saw his mom give the stuff to his
priest and then he saw his mom go in there and start taking her clothes off for the priest that is such
a foundation that we set and he's like our prayer our christian and he's freaking gone yeah they're
like all right we're going to give these characters arc set them up nope they're gone they're dead
you don't get to know what happens because they're gone
these writers are so mean
the arms of his virgin taker
in the arms of his virginity taker
he died meeting his
his purpose of of juice in it
and yeah
I will say not knowing anything going into this show
that it's definitely surprised me
to say the least
I think it's really well made
the acting is really strong
the premise is really interesting
and messed up
I thought the leads, I guess no longer the leads, minus one, or with only one left,
I had really great chemistry.
I really, really bought their friendship that they loved each other, that they were the only
safe place for one another, and the fact that they were all thrown into this situation,
he was clearly the most capable out of the three as far as, like, tactically speaking goes,
but I'm just, I'm floored, and I'm like, I don't know where this goes.
I don't know how this goes
And it is about the will to survive
Yeah, I'm just, I'm shooketh
And like friendship, you know, it's so sad
Like that towards the end there
That we see flashbacks and the montage of their friendships
And when he is sitting there
And his dad and his brother are like, he's useless
And his friends are popping up
Because they know his life
Where they're like giving, you know, popping up and down
I'm like, oh, his friends like, no
And they're like saving him
like they just they know and like when he says you're all i have i'm like oh my god and they did
it they killed him off i just can't i can't believe it you know what terer i'm holding out hope
because they did throw on the theory that maybe this is vr so maybe they're not actually dead
maybe they're not actually dead not to me being delusional yeah i think you a little delulu but you might
be right they did throw in the vr and he was like why would you feel pain
in a VR situation.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Why they give her the girl the backstory with her, you know,
getting their promotion, we're sleeping with the dude.
I know, sleeping with the thing.
But she's gone.
It don't matter.
It don't matter no more.
Oh, my God.
I mean, every episode has kind of flown by a bit.
I think the pacing and the tone of it is brilliant.
They know their plan.
They know where they're headed.
And it really revolves around really smart games that we haven't seen before.
No, sir.
And we have watched a lot of movies.
We went through Saw.
That has a lot of heft-up games in it.
I watch Squid Game.
That has a lot of heft-up games.
I watched the first season, yep.
None of this is similar.
It's all new and it's very creative.
And they really do have brilliant actors.
I just, and they are not afraid to kill off.
It's sort of, it's not how strongly I felt about Pedro being killed off.
in The Last of Us.
I was shook and I was pissed
as was most
of America. This is not
like that, but
these writers are willing to take
those kinds of risks
like that game did.
And this feels like a game where it's like
everybody can die.
Nobody's safe. I like that.
I think it's very risky,
but also I'm like,
why
I guess we gave us the foundation
of those characters so that we would feel something when they died because if they didn't
we probably wouldn't really care we we got to know sort of each one of them a little bit in
detail of course our lead a little bit more with his family background but we did get to know
those three other ones so it felt more when we see those montages of the boys all connecting
yeah right because it meant more to us yeah it is a conflicting feeling right because
one side of you is like, well, why spend all that time
if we're just going to kill them off? The other side
is like, well, maybe that's kind of
the point, the fact that
we do humanize and flesh out these
people, at least to a certain extent. So
we do kill them off. It's not only shocking.
It sets the stakes
for our show, but it also
explores humanity
and what it means to be
someone who loved and who's lost
and who survives.
And it's
definitely unique in that sense, because I feel
like a lot of, I knew for like five years that Petro was going to bite it.
Right. Yeah, and I had no idea, which is why I was just livid.
But again, it's one of those things where, you know, it's not something you really see in a lot
of American television. You get characters killed off, right? But usually it feels pretty
telegraphed. You know, like, you can kind of tell sometimes when the character's going to die.
But especially not with, if they do kill off characters in American shows, it's not within like
the first three episodes of- Right.
them happening as they establish them seemingly going to have arcs yeah we're getting attached
we're getting attached and I'm just like okay where do we go now why does he fight what does he
have to fight for does he still have a dad and a brother maybe somewhere we never see him go
home to explore if they're still there maybe his dad and brothers in the game somewhere we don't
know but I imagine that the the tether point for him to go on
is going to be his connection to that one girl in episode two yeah the lone wolf who says if you don't have the will what's you might as well die also the cool guy uh with the blonde hair yes you're right episode two yeah cool guy and the girl we got to link up with them because she's like i'll do whatever i'm i'm proud of myself that i'll do i'll literally do whatever i can to survive she has the will to live and we did see her at the top of that building and she was like i will win this or something
thing. I'll make it out of this game, which I found really intriguing.
And then we see her in that second game with the horse or whatever, and she's doing her stunts.
And that was awesome. And now we didn't get her here. But it's like, yeah, how are we going to bring
all of those characters back together? Are they going to be enough support for our Risu?
That's the thing. We establish our characters in the first episode, right?
And then we kill off the high school girl, which is something, as an American show, the youngest person in the cast who would not expect them to kill them that quickly off the bat, but killing somebody off the bat establishes the stakes of what the scenario is.
And so you're watching the second episode, you're introducing us to all these other characters after establishing the scenario and the circumstances we're in with our initial three, getting that chemistry off the bat.
but once you've set the stage in establishing those
those I don't think extra curricula is right term
but establishing those other characters
then you go into an episode three return to our base characters
kill them off which creates more narrative space
for the other characters you establish another pathway
for us to link up with them exactly I'm like
it's so cool it's like that freaking map
yeah whatever the squiggly map is and he he told them
about the beach thing, I think.
He told the friends about, oh, they're going to the beach.
Yeah, you did?
Because, yeah, he's the one who, yeah.
So now maybe Eresu's got to be like, I got to go to the beach.
Yeah, maybe.
And then I don't know if he showed him the squiggly map thing or whatever that Dr.
Strange was.
I don't know.
But, yeah, so right now we have.
I'm still, let me just say it real quick.
I'm still, listen to me.
All four of us are lined up.
up in front of a mirror.
Laser eyes with the wolf.
Okay.
I'm looking at you in the mirror,
but you're looking at me,
but like we get it halfway where you're also,
it bounces to you.
That's laser is now going to go here and then over there.
And then maybe we all survived.
That was what was in my brain and I had to explain it.
There's a way maybe we could have bounced it off the mirrors.
The only way that that would work is connect with all four people at the same time.
If you can make your eyes go chameleon and go like that.
But that's why I wanted the mirror.
They can't because you have to be eye contact to eye contact.
Because in the mirror, you can reflect there to look at the eye there and then this person.
Your eyes can't do that.
Can your eyes do that?
I don't know, man.
I don't know.
What were you going to say?
I was like really trying to think it through my mirror thing.
You know, I commend you for trying to think of a way around it.
Yeah.
I just, I don't know.
I don't know what I would do in the scenario, honestly.
It's so, it's such a lose-lose sort of situation.
A very inventive game this was in the last episode.
But I will say for the games as a whole, they continue to get more deadly, more intricate.
They're interesting.
And quite frankly, they would not have survived that first game without him.
I agree.
Right.
And he kind of is the one to carry on.
He would be the one who would probably survive the next ones.
Yeah.
He's the one who figured out the second game as well.
Yep.
So he is our lead, clearly.
He was the one in the freaking hardest one.
which is this one, a level seven, who said, it's not, I'll die.
I will sacrifice myself.
Yeah, that's why you're the one who has to survive.
Yeah.
He doesn't want it.
The selfless one.
The selfless one, yeah.
And I think it's so interesting how this series starts with his eyeball,
and you don't know what he's looking at.
You just hear a cacophony of violence in the audio space.
Just reveal that it's a video game.
So now we're actually in a real-life game.
He is surrounded by a cacophony of violence in every episode.
And it's just breaking him down incident by incident.
Totally.
Because he's not built for this thing.
No one is really, but especially, you know, a dude who's just who's playing games.
Granted, he uses those smarts to advance himself, but as far as the practical application of those.
I'm going to see if we have questions.
Oh, yeah, please.
But yeah, no, I agree with you on that.
Do we have some questions?
I don't know.
Maybe we have questions.
Oh, yeah, we do.
Look, out.
Oh, God, we definitely do.
One, two, three.
Holy tamale.
All right, let's get to it.
Angela Vance says, first of all, crazy.
Do you think you could play all the way through?
Because I don't know.
Well, I don't have the, I would have never,
engineered that okay what about the first game no that's what I'm talking about never engineered how we get through the walls and which door is right the way that he did okay you walk into that first room what are you picking first first of all I'm not walking through the door after that girl goes okay no saying she didn't do that she didn't go the spontaneous thing do you go through the life door you go through the death door that's what I might go the opposite death I might
go death.
I think I'd also go death because it seems like life would be the obvious choice, right?
So you've got to go with that subversion.
And like, you're like, well, you've got to escape and probably only one of you will or they want less of you to escape.
I think the second door is what would mess me up.
The second door is where you don't turn the knob and open it and walk in.
Why is nobody going, let's kick it in?
And then what?
The laser's going to, I don't know.
That's the thing, because every incident of this, right, the lasers have gone directly down through their head.
Yeah, you're right.
You're right.
You're right.
Well, at least test it.
It was happening in the room.
Uh-huh.
No, you're right.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I couldn't play to answer your question.
Inner EX says, yo, Alice in Borderland, sick.
Question, do you guys think you'd be able to survive the game so far?
That was the kind of the same question.
I mean, I would just say no.
I mean, that first game is tough.
Unless I had someone like Enisu, here's what I think.
I think the hardest game, maybe I could have.
There's a mirror there.
Okay.
Okay.
I'm going to give you that.
It's not going to work because they didn't see the lasers come out, but maybe.
You know what?
I believe me, Tara.
I'm going to say a mirror theory could work.
No.
Okay, which one do you think?
you would last the longest in.
What was the second one?
His tag with the horse people.
I would last a minute with that.
I would because his stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp,
such an echo.
And when someone hands me a fire extinguisher,
I wouldn't look at him twice and go, thank you.
Here's what we're going to do.
We're both going to smoke them out, hit him over the head,
and we're not going to stop.
No?
No, I would think I'd, um, I would think,
if I figured out the thing about him having bad vision,
I would take him from the side.
But also, something nobody did is a horse mask.
A human head is not shaped like a horse mask.
You smack that snow.
Exactly.
You smack the hell of that snout.
Squish that mask around.
Make them lose their vision.
Then punch him in the head.
Come on now.
Then hit him with the fire extinguisher.
Come on now.
Then you pull the pants down and push him over the ledge.
It's a second game.
We would have survived.
yeah we would have killed the second game but the other ones i don't know about that we would be dead
we would definitely be dead we'd be dead you want to read the next one all right cody g24 love the show
we're loving it so far too if y'all was in the city and everybody disappeared like they do
with episode one what would y'all think y'all's first reaction would be and what do you think
and what would he what would be the first thing y'all would do it's probably meant to say
would be the first thing you're going to um i would if i'm living there maybe i wouldn't split up
first of all i'd be like okay let's go to each one of our respective places see what's going on i
would probably try to go home see what the home situation's like um after i realized people
aren't home and i don't have my phone i might get something to eat i might go to a store or two
I don't know.
If the lights came on immediately,
I don't know if I'm going.
I don't know if I'm going straight away.
I'm going to go around the perimeter, see what's going on.
I'm going to see if there's other people.
I would search for other people and get some answers and perspective
before just going on to the game and risking my life.
Okay.
You're running around town.
I'm running around town, baby.
Okay.
Yeah, what you're doing?
I'm going, where's the food at?
Let's go.
take this alcohol with us on the run
to get a little buzz going. Everybody's gone.
I don't know what's going on.
We're going to hit up the bar, have a little
bit of fun. Eat a lot of
food. Get with it.
Get to carbs in there, get strong.
Okay. Question.
Yeah. And take
gas station food with
a stuff in my pants in all my
clothes because you don't know. Okay.
What order are you doing things? Are you
crying, eating, getting drunk?
Getting drunk, crying and eating.
getting drunk crying and eating okay that seems like for sure that's a good way to go yeah right
and you just like just eat your feelings each your and it feels so good and you're like this is the right move
yeah bingo you throw up and then get more drunk and then I guess I'll play the game and then we play the game
because we're like well what else are we going to do we're hungover hell which is fine because you want to die
anyway when you have that bad of a hangover you're like let it end take me out take me out

Donna Castellano says, oh, yeah, you get to rewatch this again with three actors.
Glad you're here.
And my favorite are our duo.
Oh, we love that, Donna.
All I can ask is, at this point, what are your theories on where they are?
What's happening to them?
Well, everybody's dead except DeRisu.
I think it's an AI.
It's an AI game.
Yeah.
And it's AI.
a VR game testing humans
for what's going on? Because
listen, is Homegirl
dead who slept with
Chato? Sure. But there's a reason
that showed the fact that she worked for an AI company.
You don't just drop that information for no
reason. So I feel like AI plays
into this somehow. How does
AI put the devices in there? Maybe they have
help. Maybe this is the company's doing.
I don't, another theory
I have is that... Maybe it's all VR.
I don't think his friends
were originally supposed to be in that game.
feel like everyone there was hand selected and I feel like the fact that all three of them went to
the stall not all three of them are supposed to be there because I feel like up to this point
it's been individuals all having it happen to them oh yeah that's that's that's um that's a good call
i i wouldn't know why they would accept all of them though right because if you're like if we get them
all to disappear everybody who's there is all by themselves everybody disappeared and everyone's
like what's going on but they have each other yeah now they don't so he's in the same shoes
oh god and i'm like yeah the show's about friendship and like humanity and the will to live
and i don't i mean i don't know i feel like you could be very right about the AI thing why else
would they show us that i'm sad he'd never got to drive the being
what's happening to them they're in a living hell but I do think and I will be I do believe he
will match up with the blonde-haired guy and the girl and they can do some damage another theory
I think the girl who the what's his name again the the blonde bread oh rub
I think his girl's alive and I feel like we're going to meet up oh yeah that's right and maybe
Maybe Eresu will see the ring
And I don't know if he'll see it
Maybe take it
Like for his friend trying to try to try to
You know
Get her to survive
It's a good call
You never know
I feel like that could be where we're headed
Want to go for that one?
All right resident Z
Wait no that's wrong one
Yeah that's right
Resident Z ha ha this is a surprise
I hope you guys are enjoying the series so far
Question about episode three
What is worst slash harder
Sacrificing yourself for a friend
or the guilt or feeling guilt
as the only person, the only survivor.
This episode hit hard.
Yes, it freaking did.
That's tough.
Because you have 20 minutes
and you have to reconcile
with the morality of yourself and your friend
in the span of 20 minutes.
The thing is, his survivor's guilt
is not as bad as it could have been
if it was like a rub, where you're just doing it
And then you realize after you killed your freaking friends, right?
Aresu didn't want to.
He was like being like, just let me not be the wolf.
Like I want, he was the selfless one.
But I do, I, it would be, the survivor's guilt, I'm sure, is really tough.
Yeah.
Like, you got to live with that.
Do you still have the will to live after that?
I don't know.
Yeah.
What are you?
playing for there's no prize right I might as well sacrifice for my friends I guess
because aren't I just going to die soon anyway and if another friend is better at the game
then I'll be like I'll just whatever we're gonna there's lasers in the air I'm gonna die
soon enough I think you're putting it as if you were in his shoes yeah what if you were in
your shoes you were playing with your friends
that would be really tough i i would i would probably be like chota where it's like i wouldn't know
what to do i don't want it to end this way let's find a mirror okay i'll take i will call back to
the mirror all freaking day long okay i'll be mirrored up just like continuously continuing
woof woof and maybe use the computer and he can't take any of us out it's all
if they don't know so nobody's dead you're welcome
j rushden what are your thoughts about the show and is it better or worse than squid
games there i you know squid game season one blew my socks off
became a whole phenomenon i think it's um
it's definitely exactly and it's definitely up there it's very different this is more
like well no it's not very different i was going to say this has a little more
drama. This has
more pulling
at the heartstrings there. Episode 3
they go hard and they go fast.
Yeah. Squid Games took a minute
to get there, to get
to that emotional point where we realize
like people do still care about
each other, right? I think if we're
appearing it to episode 1, 2, 3
to 1, 2, 3 of a first season,
I think this so far is stronger
because there was the
external factors of Squid game
from season 1. It's been a year since I've seen it, but
remember he was like
he was an absentee father
or like a father who was
you know down in his luck
not very active in his daughter's life
or like he was a drunkard
so he had like an incentive because
it's about humans
will to survive coupled with a desire
to win a pot of money right
and there is no financial incentive
in this game. This is just purely about
surviving so it makes this a little bit
more emotionally
not complex
I suppose because there's
but has more of that emotion in there because the money is not a factor exactly yeah so
if we're going to pair series to series from episodes one two three to one to two and three i'm going
to say out some borderlines yeah i i would i would probably agree with that all right uh daydreamer
oh my god i'm so happy you're reacting to this my question is are you more likely to survive
the games in a ib or in squid games um i think in this one squid well i don't know in the
beginning where it's like nope i think here because here there's no because the first game i would die
with the doors if we didn't have a risu squid games except squid game was hard because you're like you just have to
absolutely freeze that was the first game or she'll just freaking take your head off i guess you could
you could learn like you really got a freeze you cannot move an inch i think you could pick up on that
i'd be better at that than being like which door by chance i think i would rather
be in this one. I'd rather be in this one. I'd rather start
with the second game than I could go, I have a chance.
Yeah, I'm going to say I have a greater chance in
this show than it's a good game. And just the circumstances
of how the players have to be, because at least get to roam the city
or whatnot. Totally. I agree. All right, last
question. Jossi Soto. I can't believe you guys are doing
Allison Borderland. For my question, what traits
of yours do you think would help in getting through
the borderlands? I think
traits would be
I know to always grab a weapon
that's there for me
would it be I think it'd be under Friday
is it not there yet
no it is questions yeah I saw it for
Saturday oh hell yeah
so we got them um
great um so I would say
knowing to always grab a weapon first
probably
I do come from engineers
so they were good at like
figuring out things.
I'm a pretty good problem
solver, although that can be a little
annoying. I'm not a person who's
going to be like, oh, yeah, I'm so
sorry to hear that. I'm already thinking
of how do we fix the thing.
So maybe that would come in handy.
And I feel like I'd be an okay team player,
but I might also be a great lone wolf.
But my strength would not be
the climbing, like that climbing girl,
I would take some risk, but I
would probably fall to my death.
face it.
Oh, for sure.
My death, yeah.
What Tracy think would help you survive the game?
I think, like, they'd be a team player.
And for all the games, I think, like, strength would come into number two.
Yeah, for sure.
But, yeah, I don't know.
I don't know.
Like, brute strength.
Yeah.
Because you could fight some people down.
You're a lot bigger than all the rest of the people, right?
You just throw them out of here.
Throw them out of there.
Get out of here.
Little Japanese people, bye.
Exactly.
Oh, my God.
But for the rest of them.
the games i think that it would be a little tougher uh because that's oh no if i'm not the one
opening the door in the first game my ass getting ate up that's what i'm saying oh yeah the firearm
see that's why i'm like i'm cooked the first game in this that's why these questions are so hard
because i would go i would want to be here but that first game really screwed us that's a tough
one to get through that's a really tough one yeah i that's the thing that if we're just playing from
the character's perspectives because the girl, the one who juice Shato, that was her second game,
but this is their first game.
So that might not necessarily be our first game.
Oh, that's right.
That's right.
So we might have a chance.
We might actually have a freaking chance.
Well, granted, we've only seen the first three episodes.
We don't know what the rest of the games have to tell.
We really don't.
Or, like, do they, they got to recycle them after a certain amount of time?
I don't know.
There's a lot of dots in the city.
There's a lot. There's too many games. You're right. You're right. I don't know. I don't know, man. Wackadoo, freaking wild. I will say that I thought he was going to say I'll throw down some bars.
Some poetry.
Get us through. Yeah, get our souls feeling good.
My poetry. He's just going to be like, Allison and Borderlands, here we are with the bands. And we're here. And it's wild. Everybody's dead. But we're going.
steady ahead.
I tried.
Yep, tried it, did it.
10 out 10.
10. That's how we do it.
So maybe he would throw down some bars.
Mirror, mirror on the wall.
Yeah, yep.
Who is dying in the hall?
Uh-huh.
Who is dying in a show?
Nobody knows.
All of these flows.
Uh-huh.
This has been Addison, Borderland,
one, two, and three.
We got to go.
When you look in the mirror, you see a wolf, but maybe it might not be because we're all wolves, because the mirror.
Okay.
Bye.
