Join Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey as they tumble down the rabbit hole in their Reaction & Review of Disney's classic 1951 animated film Alice in Wonderland, the whimsical adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Directed by Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, and Hamilton Luske, this iconic Disney feature brings to life a vibrant world of dreamlike wonder and eccentric characters. Kathryn Beaumont (who also voiced Wendy in Peter Pan) stars as Alice, the curious young girl who follows the White Rabbit (voiced by Bill Thompson, Lady and the Tramp) into a surreal fantasy realm. The film features Ed Wynn (Mary Poppins, Babes in Toyland) as the delightfully unhinged Mad Hatter, Jerry Colonna as the March Hare, Verna Felton (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty) as the Queen of Hearts, and Sterling Holloway (The Jungle Book, Winnie the Pooh) as the ever-smiling Cheshire Cat. From the unforgettable “Unbirthday” tea party to the chaotic croquet match with the Queen, to the psychedelic musical number “In a World of My Own,” Alice in Wonderland is a landmark in animation history and Disney storytelling. With its surreal visuals, memorable voice work, and musical charm, this version of Alice’s adventures remains a fan favorite and continues to inspire generations. Starting point is 00:00:39 Mask with even Chuck E. Cheese got redesigned dude Charles. Yeah, they got like adult Chuck E. Cheese is coming out now They're like David Buss. Oh that yeah Chuck's arcade Chuck's are kidding. You know what man? That's that's good more. Starting point is 00:02:11 Ah So you can get notified anytime a new video is coming out Or else Alright, Aaron, it's time to read some of the questions from our royal rejects Oh boy Oh boy. Oh boy. As always, we kick off a lot of these reviews with some patron questions. So if you want to help guide the convo, jump on over onto our Patreon page.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Become a Royal Reject. Join the court of the Queen of Hearts. Let's see. Question one comes from Andrew Laxton and Andrew wants to know Alison or Andrew says, Alison Wonderland, did the movie make you feel like you were high on life, of course, on life on that particularly strong team. No No, I mean, yeah, I feel like a Hi, maybe not in the sense you're thinking Maybe on some some some alternative of methods, but sure I thought there's a form of high this could this could be applicable to Yeah, because I think even if you were to see this in a state where you ate your vegetables, you'd be like, this is wild, brother. But yeah, definitely. I
Starting point is 00:03:33 mean, it made me curious to know if the creators of this movie, because I'm not sure how trippy the book is in comparison to the Disney movie. But I wonder how tripped out they were while making the movie Hey, yeah I mean it does make me wonder about the behind the scenes of These movies and certainly Fantasia has this and a lot of like the older I feel like the classic age Disney animated stuff has a certain amount of Psychedelia involved and I wonder what that comes, because part of it is me going like,
Starting point is 00:04:05 well, it's animation. And animation, if you're, like, you know, a lot of animators I have met and have known are very imaginative and come up with interesting, you know, twists on familiar things. And so part of me can look at something like this and say, man, what imagination. And then the other part of me looks at,
Starting point is 00:04:23 especially something like this and says Who discovered LSD? How many of the animators got together and dropped some some chemicals or whatever, you know, I Don't know really the truth of that in either direction But yes, I mean the movie certainly has this interesting fever dreamish quality. Yeah, I didn't sensorily feel myself, you know, becoming I wasn't whooshing through space and experiencing the physicals. But you know, like if you surrender yourself to the movie, it definitely feels like some kind of mind altering experience. And yes, like I partly like watching this,
Starting point is 00:05:07 I kept imagining and I kept bringing up the Tiki Room, I know. And there is an hours in wonder wonderland ride at Disneyland that is again in the tradition of the older rides, like kind of it's fun and imaginative, but it's also kind of freaky. I almost imagine this is like you could make a whole like immersive show out of this. Oh, yeah. And I mean, like the ride is kind of like that anyway. But, you know, again, if you crashed that ride type of scenario into something
Starting point is 00:05:35 that was more like a tiki room, but maybe you're on kind of like, you know, those rides there like the doom buggies, like the haunted mansion where you can tell this is like one huge conveyor belt That's just kind of like rotating in yeah So like it definitely leaps off the the frame that way and you know The animation certainly is like lush and detailed and and I feel like stuff like this has certainly like Influenced what you imagine when you imagine? You know has certainly influenced what you imagine when you imagine psychedelic trippy imagery. Yeah, when someone says, show me a movie where it's on drugs.
Starting point is 00:06:10 It looks like it's on drugs. Boom, Alice in Wonderland. Is this the one you're supposed to sync up to Dark Side of the Moon either way? T Grimace. What? There's a, yeah, one of these classic animated movies has a famous interactive urban legend thing where
Starting point is 00:06:25 it's like oh man if you start dark side of the moon just this specific time then it syncs up with the whole rest of the movie and I think it might be Alice in Wonderland. Interesting. Because I guess like yeah the idea is like oh the songs kind of mirror what's happening to Alice. But T Grimace thank you for chiming in. This is just a comment saying, damn, I misread the titles earlier and was so excited to see Alice in Borderland.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Well, you're going to have to wait a little longer. TG appreciates you. Just the same chiming in. Who do we got? Michelle R, thank you for chiming in the convo. Alice in Wonderland for John and Aaron, what would your own personal Wonderland look like? Would it be a world you look forward to escaping to?
Starting point is 00:07:09 That's an interesting question. Our own wonderland look like? I don't know, I feel like it'd be some combination of space and the sea with a lot of, well, there'd be a lot of colors for sure, but you know, just a lot of beastly hybrids, and I don't know, just the intersection between high tech and extremely whimsical and magical.
Starting point is 00:07:39 I think that's kind of where mine would be. Yeah, I guess my Wonderland would be, yeah, kind of a nature-y place. I don't think I would want quite as much nonsense as is on display here personally, but I do appreciate a healthy amount of absurdity and whimsy, so I would want at least some of that. Like, this was a fascinating watch
Starting point is 00:07:59 because it is, again, very loose. It's a lot of, like, we're in a new environment with new characters, and each new set of characters kind of takes the spotlight and it's more of a medley, it's more of a series of vignettes than it is like one, you know, the plot is just Alice gets lost and you know, explores and tries to find her way home, essentially, but within that, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:21 I feel like there is this sort of coming of age story that's about sort of accepting that, you know, too much whimsy, too much absurdity, too much, you know, unbridled childlike instinct. It might be a bit too much, you know, and you like need some kind of tempering for that. You need to, you know, mature a little bit so that like it's weird because like all the different scenarios she encounters are like kind of patients testing after a while and they exhaust and exasperate her. So I wouldn't want to have an exhaustive wonderland. I mean, like, yeah, I guess it would start out as a very, you know what I would want my wonderland to be very patchwork. I would want, you know, some of it to be very
Starting point is 00:09:03 like natural world, like, oh, you're up in the mountains here. And then want, you know, some of it to be very like natural world, like, you're up in the mountains here and then like, ooh, there's a sea and there's, you know, desert. There's like every kind of climate in sort of like one region and then you can go to a different region and everything is like hand drawn animated. Like these, you know, sort of backgrounds and stuff like that. I would want a world of like ever changing media because like one of my dreams, like you know, people think about their dream home. And for me, like one of the things I've always wanted to do is have like if I got my my place, my home with multiple rooms,
Starting point is 00:09:34 I would be like every room is a different kind of style of vibe architecture, whatever it might be. So yeah, that's how my wonderland would be It's like not like no technology not like no modern stuff But I would have to be kind of like, you know peppered and laced into Certain areas or you know, maybe it's kind of like warped to be sort of more hybridized with the natural world and stuff like that Okay, but you know, give me all that wonka stuff to give me like a river of cream soda Or like, you know, it rains Topo Chico. Give me some, not bungee clouds, give me some bouncy clouds. I want to bounce from the clouds.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Yeah, bouncy clouds, hell yeah. I want to swing. I want a sushi tree in my backyard. A sushi tree, yes. Give me a fry garden. Yeah, oh my god, you just go pick them one at a time. Sushi tree yes, give me a fry garden. Yeah Pick one at a time My garden and they're like always sizzling they're always like the perfect temperature perfectly seasoned. Oh my god as all things should be
Starting point is 00:10:39 Yeah, I mean there's so many things a wonderland could be and for me yeah, it would be like Just this free-flowing jumbly everything place But but yeah where there's like not, you know, there's not like a lot of chaos necessarily There's not like a lot you have to do you mostly you just kind of got a you know Go around talk to people explore do stuff Yeah, you know you can taste you can taste music and hear colors. It'd be very sensory. It'd be very crazy. But I want to hear what everybody else's Wonderlands could be like, because I feel like you could make like an entire hour and a half or longer
Starting point is 00:11:14 podcast just breaking down like, okay, what would I want my perfect through the looking glass world? Oh yeah. If you really go into it. Yeah, there's a whole video in and of itself. In short, I would want it to be a place I look forward to escaping to rather than a place I want to escape to and then discover is like a bit much and I would like to go home now. But yeah, it's flyingscotsman4072. Thank you for jumping in for John and Erin. If you would ever encounter a white rabbit, would you follow it down the hole
Starting point is 00:11:48 to enter a weird magical world? And similar cue to John F. If you open the box... Who's John F.? Is that me? I don't know. Do you have an F in your name? You have a middle name start with F? John Free. I changed it. I don't know and similar F in your name and you have a middle name start with F John free
Starting point is 00:12:06 Changed it If you open a box and the food has eat me written over it. Would you eat it? Oh Oh, I get a question similar to John F who is down below okay, I see so John F asked for John and Aaron a Okay, I see. I see. So John F asked for John and Aaron a very merry on birthday to the both of you and hey To her to you both Marry your very merry on birthday. I assume to you and to all to many of you Yes watching reminding us how small of a world it is If you saw a bottle that said drink me on it, would you drink it?
Starting point is 00:12:41 all right, so would you follow the white rabbit down the hole and enter a weird magical world and Would you eat me would you drink me? You know I feel like if our kid out have a different answer, but if you're speaking from today Really depends on what I had to do that day And if it smelled good if it smelled good yeah, but if it smells weird, I'm not eating or drinking that That's fair. That's fair. See I like yeah, I guess I Question the motivation of who would write those things on Because part of you just find a random box. This is eat me. It's like little cookies. I'm like
Starting point is 00:13:22 What are the odds that someone would be like I'm gonna put these cookies out here that say eat me and they just kill you And that's it. I don't feel like that would be as likely even if it was Unfortunate in the outcome really good I feel like people would probably only do that if they if the the thing has like some kind of effect that's worth observing that if they if the the thing has like some kind of effect that's worth observing not that they were necessarily that way in this movie but I mean it's weird I guess part of me would be like I'll maybe lick it or like take a crumb and try yeah it's like a you know the drink me I would just like take a dollop and do this or what is this yeah definitely sniff and then take like a you know the drink me I would just like take a dollop and do this or what is this yeah definitely sniff and then take like a little poke my little
Starting point is 00:14:09 tongue out at it it's weird like part of my brain says like nah no I don't need to eat some kind of mystery thing that really wants me to eat it but you know part of me especially if I got stuff to do that day no yes if it's a work day which most days are I will not be taking that risk but there is a John that I do have that dog somewhere in me I suppose. If I encountered a white rabbit though you know running around with his little waistcoat and his little watch and stuff I might follow I would be more apt I think to follow the rabbit Then I might be to just eat and drink some random stuff with no one around you know Is he like was he moving real fast is he spastic is he just as he stressed the hell out or is just a rabbit? Is it this exact same rabbit because if it's the exact same rabbit. I don't know if I'm following him
Starting point is 00:15:01 I'm just like you seem like you really stressed out, bro. You got Yeah, I don't need to get in your way It's fair. That's fair. Starting point is 00:17:26 St. Row. I have no idea if we can react to the horde from 2009. But hey, if y'all want that, that's something y'all are interested in. Comment or run any other stray thoughts free form. Thank you guys for contributing to our questionnaire, to our review here. This is a definitely interesting movie. It was very colorful. It was full of whimsy and music and it makes me appreciate the things in pop culture that have been inspired by this movie a lot more. I definitely, after watching this, there's a bar out here in Los Angeles called The Rabbit Hole, which I would like to experience with now the fresh knowledge of knowing some of its inspiration or all of its inspiration. There used to also be a Fry's Electronics that was Ellen's Wonderland.
Starting point is 00:18:14 That's right! I did used to go there right by my old job and now it no longer exists. But yeah, this is a definitely interesting ride and coming away from it. It makes me want to check out the timber and want to see how it compares contrast. Yeah, man. Where's that extra half hour come from? Yeah, I would love also, I am kind of compelled now to go pick up the book and to see what it looks like on the page. But yeah, like this was, yeah, this was super fun to behold and it's a quirky movie and I admire that Because like it's it's such an enduring classic and yet when you watch it I'm like this is such a peculiar movie and it is again like a feat of
Starting point is 00:18:56 imagination of animation of vocal performances of song and Music and all that stuff and and And like, I love this old tradition because it really does transport you to a different place and time. Just the quality of the voice is what people sounded like, how the harmonies come together. And just like, even in the way the audio is assembled, like because this is earlier,
Starting point is 00:19:19 you can kind of hear where they like snipped the end of one line or, you know, something else begins over here and then there's overlap and and yeah, so like I'm I'm constantly dazzled whenever we get to go back just because you can really feel the feet of artistry that this is with all the different layers and the way they orchestrate and simulate camera throughout all that stuff. It is like a fascinatingly odd movie and I feel like, you know, this again reminded me of like a Fantasia
Starting point is 00:19:47 because Fantasia is a medley in a more overt kind of way. Like it's not necessarily it's it's a symphony with many movements. It's not made to be like it's the plot, you know. And so this like kind of felt like it was halfway between those things, which really quick, I want to look that up because because, yeah, like, we have Fantasia, and I need 40. Fantasia's two hours and five minutes, oh dang. It's like a, yeah, it's like a whole symphony.
Starting point is 00:20:15 And this was animated in 2010. Yep. What do I have to write, original, original 1951. Okay, dang, all right. So we are- 1865, that was probably as well. So we are, okay, hold on a second. List of classic Disney animated movies by release date.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Cause yeah, I'm like, which, where are- Fantasia was, I saw it said 1940. Okay, cause Snow White, yeah, it was the first one. So we had Snow White Pinocchio Pantasia Fantasia the reluctant dragon never heard of that. I never heard of that. Yeah, there had Dumbo Bambi Saludos amigos. Ooh Oh with the birds, that's right Victory through air power. That's got to be like a war cereal or something like that. The three Caballeros,
Starting point is 00:21:05 yeah, with the birds again. Oh good song of the South. Let's go. Classic. We love that one. Ikebata, Mr. Toad. So we had a bunch of stuff. Okay. And then Cinderella was just before this in 50. Peter Pan later in the tramp. Peter Pan right after Sleeping Beauty a few years later. And then we go Sword in the Stone. So the 60s is really when they hit their stride. I guess so.
Starting point is 00:21:27 I mean, there's a lot of, I mean, I guess from the 30s to the 60s or 70s at least, I feel like we have a very, you know, you keep coming across classics and stuff like that. Because yeah, Jungle Book, Robin Hood in the 73, Winnie the Pooh in 77, The Resuers, Pete's dragon, Fox and the Hound, which Greg's cats are named for. But yeah, it's just it fascinates me. And two, it seems like maybe this might have been kind of a return to again, this this more symphonic
Starting point is 00:22:00 medley kind of style after doing what appears to be a lot more, you know, direct story adaptation. So I like it's weird. I'm fascinated to I still don't know like where I would put this among the pantheon because I feel like this of all of them. You have to be in like a very specific head space to put on. Yeah. It's like I wouldn't put this on for the same reason I would put on Pinocchio or you know, this is out, you know, like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty or one of those little mermaid. But I mean, like, I admire this and I miss this. Like, I really wish we still lived in a circumstance where like, yeah, strange, trippy, imaginative animation was still a thing you might see come out in a form where you could really, again, feel that it's a moving piece of art. No shade, again, to anything rendered in a computer that is also art.
Starting point is 00:22:54 And there are a lot of artists and people's imaginations that go into that. But the tangibility of this is just unbeatable for a specific flavor that we just don't really get anymore. So yeah, this is really cool to come back and revisit. And now I'm fascinated to see. I know I caught, I think, part of the Tim Burton one when it first came out, but I seldom remember much of any of that experience except for the image of Johnny Depp's bright orange hair and pale white face. But I'm very curious now to go back and see how that adaptation works and operates because I have a sneaking feeling that it probably won't play this way. No, I don't think so. Yeah. Same with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and then Willy Wonka
Starting point is 00:23:42 and the Chocolate Factory. I'd love to watch both of those. And then see which jump to Tim Burton goes over better. Yeah. Which Johnny Depp is more... Which Johnny Depp vehicle is more palatable. Yeah. Gang, thanks for joining us for this. This was so cool. I admire the wildness. I admire the trippiness and and I'm fascinated to again like I know times were different and we operated differently when we knew kids were going to watch stuff. But this is like, you know, that guy is like this is very like psychedelic in an overt kind of way, especially with the Caterpillar and all that stuff. Yeah, I'm very
Starting point is 00:24:21 curious what audiences thought when this came out. Like what how kids felt about it and how parents felt about it watching it, especially Like when was when when was reefer madness? Who's that? Oh golly, let's see 1936 Alright alright here before we before we head out. Let's just see really quick There's any crazy trivia about this because there has to be something you know this whole thing is like such a you know prolific and storied production in walrus in the carpenter sequence the R word in March in the word March on the mother oysters calendar flashes this alludes to the old adage about
Starting point is 00:25:04 only eating oysters in a month with R in its name. That is because those months without an R made, June, July, and August, are the summer months in England when oysters would not keep due to the heat in the days before refrigeration. Interesting. This movie took five years to complete,
Starting point is 00:25:20 but it was in development for over 10 years before it entered active production. That is fascinating for sure. While filming live action reference scenes for the Mad Tea Party, Edwin Adlibbed the speech where the Mad Hatter tries to quote fix the White Rabbit's watch. Mustard? Don't let's be silly. Walt Disney was watching the filming and told the animators, hey, that stuff's pretty funny. Why don't you use that speech in the movie? The animators objected. We can't use that.
Starting point is 00:25:48 There are too many background noises on the film. Disney smiled and told them, that's your problem. And then walked out of the room. Eventually with much labor, the Disney sound technicians managed to rerecord Wynn's dialogue and erase all the background noises so that Wynn's ad libs were used in the final animated film. The live action footage still exists and has been featured in the bonus material on Alice in Wonderland DVD. And this is a combination
Starting point is 00:26:13 okay of Lewis Carroll's two Alice books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass that's right I didn't quite clock that they're different but yeah like they in the opening title they had the credit to that. that didn't they make a second Tim Burton now is wonderland through the looking glass Yes, oh I believe they did the man hatter is apparently based on the phrase man is a hatter which has a historical Basis in the hat industry of the 19th century There's an extensive use of mercury liquid mercury is one of the causes of mercury poisoning which among other things causes brain damage among the symptoms are slurred speech memory loss tremors and behavior that can be seen as
Starting point is 00:26:51 insane The movie has more songs and characters than any other Disney animated film I can believe that the king of hearts in the original novel is a force of moderation in the reign of his wife He quietly pardons many subjects the Queen is ordered to be beheaded when the Queen is not looking. This guarantees few people are actually beheaded. And Catherine Beaumont, who is the voice of Alice, narrates the Alice in Wonderland ride at Disneyland. Lewis Carroll wrote the riddle.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Why is a raven like a writing desk as nonsense? It has no answer. This has not stopped people despite being repeatedly told that there is not nor should there be any answer from trying to contrive one among suggestions there are because Edgar Allen Poe wrote on both and because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes. The second of which is a very similar to a solution that Carol himself wearily suggested when he grew tired of people asking about it. That's funny. And apparently the doorknob is the only character in the film that did not appear in Lewis Carol's books. Oh my goodness. There's so many of these. Yeah, there this is this is a movie. I am now
Starting point is 00:27:58 They would all be fascinating But I feel like this is one in particular where like I'm making over behind the scenes are just the story of this seems This in Fantasia. I would love to watch like I'm making over something. Oh But anyway guys Don't get beheaded out there We love you and leave us what your ideal wonderland is and we'll catch you or in opposite terms We won't catch you ever again always Be terrible, and we'll see you next time I'm late
Starting point is 00:28:32 Alexandria man if we went into the wonderland which what missing character would Alexandria be oh let's see you would be like a talking Ottoman, and tired of having feet on you all the time. And so you start putting your feet on real people. That's the nonsense of Wonderland. So you're always chilling, and you always get your feet up on whoever's nearest to you in the room.
Starting point is 00:28:58 So then people get into wacky hijinks trying to not be the one who you rest your feet on. And eventually Alice does, and then you know you guys Hit it off, and then she sets you free Or something I think you nailed it really yeah, it's good. It was an Alex and wonderland Alex and wonderland would have saved us a lot of time and energy Oh, no, I'm working our brains this hard. See as a difficult of a job. This is that's why I'm not the showrunner I'm just in the on the writers team saying it was right there
Starting point is 00:29:34 Opposite and this is in the true spirit of wonderland it was nonsensical. What are you good? That's what I did
