Andrew & Johnald RETURN to the Chip-a-Verse to give their Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel Reaction, Recap, Analysis, Breakdown, & Spoiler Review!! Andrew Gordon (cinepals & John Humphrey (owning a used copy of the Chipmunks Christmas Album) dive into the musical mayhem, sibling chaos, and high-energy antics of the hit sequel that introduced an all-new trio of furry superstars. They give their first time watch of Betty Thomas’s (Dr. Dolittle, Private Parts) fun-filled family comedy, starring Justin Long (Accepted, Dodgeball) as Alvin, Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) as Simon, and Jesse McCartney (Fear the Walking Dead) as Theodore — returning as the world’s most famous chipmunk boy band. After a chaotic stage accident benches Dave Seville (Jason Lee — My Name Is Earl, Almost Famous), the boys are shipped off to high school, where they must navigate bullies, homework, responsibility… and the pressures of fame. But everything changes when they meet The Chipettes: Brittany (Christina Applegate — Anchorman, Dead to Me), Jeanette (Anna Faris — Scary Movie, The House Bunny), and Eleanor (Amy Poehler — Parks and Recreation, Inside Out) — three fierce, talented, and hilarious newcomers manipulated by the slimy music exec Ian Hawke (David Cross — Arrested Development), who’s desperate to regain control of the industry’s cutest stars. This week's video is sponsored by Acorns, the money app that makes it simple and cheap to make small yet significant investments.
Andrew.
John.
Are you ready?
Squeak away, John.
For more classic kits.
Yes, I am.
I want to squeak away and watch this.
All right, gang.
We're going to watch Elvin and the Chipmunks.
It's the squeakle.
It's rated PG parental guidance.
That's right, mate.
Yes, mate.
All right.
nine, a one, a two, and a three.
That's cinema right there.
That was a book end.
And I thought the Chippets were a nice, the Chippets were a nice addition to this film.
I think they added nuance and complexity.
And, yeah, I thought they were good.
And also for Alvin to have his moment of reflection and to have,
you know, some
just to get, yeah,
like I said, to have some reflection and just to see
the error of his ways and to see like
that he needed to be more responsible and
value his brothers and his commitment to what
when he makes a promise to be there and do that
and also see that the new friends that he's garner
in, which it's fine to make new friends and all,
but they don't really actually care for him
like his brothers have always cared for him.
So, you know, to just make sure.
Yeah, make sure, like Uncle Ian did, for instance, in the first film,
just make sure you understand the group around you is so important,
says a lot about you as a person, or as a chipmunk in this case.
So just be very careful who you surround yourself with.
Donald, what did you think?
I love this movie.
No.
I thought you were being sincere right there, right?
But I believed you.
These movies have been very fascinating to watch,
and I don't think it's any mystery if you watch this channel that part of my M.O.
when we come into stuff like this that is
historically clowned upon
you know I'm happy to meet these things
halfway for what they are
and I think it's fun to see what actually is
working about something that is largely
maligned or whatever as well
as to know what actually doesn't work
and yes I will say
I am in the minority as of now
I don't remember what the tomato meters on these movies are
maybe we can look into the first two now
for this I'll look right now
but yes I actually did enjoy this
more than the first movie. I feel like
this, it's weird. There's
a, there's a given take
to that because things I
liked in the first movie that weren't so much here,
Dave, I did miss
Jason Lee. I thought, one of the
few things in the first movie
that I did earnestly
enjoy was his earnest
presence, you know, his weird
Dave yell aside, which I noticed that they kept
cutting away from here.
Because, yeah, like he was big this weird face.
But yeah, the first movie was
very sincere and
I felt for him
amid the chaos of all that
and his lady companion
whose name I know
forget.
I think she was Cameron Richards?
I can't remember.
Something.
She was very charming
and I like the two of them
and I'm sad that
you know just that
that vibe wasn't present.
You didn't even mention
what happens.
Yeah, she's just not here anymore
and did the,
I don't know, she could be a part
of the picture, who knows?
Cameron Richardson.
Yeah, but the character
and I don't remember.
Claire.
Claire.
But yeah, I missed them.
But largely, I think this movie did well to, yeah, tweak a couple of things that just made it much more palatable to me.
They squeaked a couple of things.
Yeah, they squeaked a couple of things.
And it just made it much easier to enjoy.
First and foremost, yes, the musical element.
Maybe it's just because we had the first movie to break the ice and I knew what to expect.
But I was sort of repelled by the music in the first movie.
Whereas in this movie, I was able to kind of have a bit more.
more fun with it. I think in the first movie,
the chipmunks and the musical sequences
in general are just like
feeling themselves way
too hard. You know where somebody like clearly
think something is like so cool or they
think they're so cool and what they're doing
is actually, actually that cool.
Like that first movie had that
kind of cringy quality where I'm like,
ah, they think these chipmunks are so
cool that they're just
frustrating and
annoying.
But yeah, in the first movie I found the song is to be
very overproduced if you could even say that about chipmunk music and then on top of that all the
like insane vocal runs over every inch of a song's melody just got to be really grating and got to be
really yeah frustrating to listen to the way they turns these retro songs and the way the the chipmunks
sang them in this way in the first film was like it's okay it's nothing like terrible but
it's nothing special to at times it can be a little overbearing and then
this film like I actually liked without
the music where they were doing
the staying alive bit and
then the what is it you spin me right
round baby like yeah I actually enjoyed
that yeah I thought in this movie they did
a nicer job to blend
classic songs or songs that are sort of
ubiquitous and you know like
if you're a young person you might still know
them and then if your parents happen to be
here they might know them and then there are plenty of
also relevant pop songs for the kids
but yeah I thought just the way that they handled the
performance of the music and the attitude of the music was just more palatable here.
It was a little less overly pleased with itself and a little more just in the moment of the
scene or the music.
And I think putting the chipmunks into situations where they're singing in an organic
environment or there's not always musical accompaniment just helped.
And the fact that they did dial back some of the, you know, insane vocal riffing that
they indulge so heavily in and then triple harmonized in chipmunk.
Yeah, way more digestible in terms of the music.
And even though I am not a big fan of beloved, you know, children's characters like this from an older time getting super hip and now and doing cool pop music, hip hop shit, the first movie had like a way more off-putting version of that to me, whereas this movie had a version where I could at least tolerate it.
And, you know, the songs that would appeal to me were kind of charming or, you know, they would use them in a way.
that may be complimented the scene in a way
that had a little bit extra thought
to my, you know, sensibility anyway.
So that's good.
I like the music more in this movie.
I still think it's weird.
Like, you know, the chipmunks being famous voices
is cool and all.
I don't get a ton of their specific qualities
because they're so heavily processed that...
I could never even tell who was doing this.
Yeah, so it's like it's neat to have all them.
And I like the chipettes.
You know, yeah, I, I, I,
I generally found the chipmunks themselves,
the core three, Alvin and Simon
and Theodore, to be way, way more palatable in this movie.
The first movie, all three of them,
I found aggravating to watch
and frustrating and annoying.
And even Theodore, who's cute
and who always screws things up
by accident rather than by design
was, like, really at the end
of my patience rope.
Like Simon in this film,
coming to his own, being responsible,
good man.
Yeah, I thought this movie
split the difference nicely enough
to where, like, yes,
mischief follows the chipmunks
but Simon is responsible and
Theodore is gentle and if it's just the two
of them maybe this chaos is not
going to be so insane that they wreck everything
around them and then Alvin
is freer to be the more
rascally the more chaos oriented
one the more selfish one yeah and Theodore's
very sensitive as well
yeah and in the first movie I thought they got in the way
of a lot of that earnestness and sensitivity
that ought to arguably come from
these three in some way
shape or form I still think that Alvin could be
more lovable
like there's there was
slightly more heart in this movie than the previous
movie I didn't think the previous one really
earned its heart flourishes
still a cute film about a found
family and a family coming together and all that
but I would agree with that yeah
yeah so just like the way they handled the attitude
and I think it was a very smart idea to take them
to put them in a situation where yeah
they're not on top of the world
and they're not these they are these superstars
but they're a bit fish out of water they're at a regular
school they're going through some level
of coming of age stuff.
Yeah, it made it easier to root for
and sympathize with them rather than like
these chipmunks just fall into this guy's life
and keep wrecking everything and injuring him
and then they keep accruing massive rewards
and success and fame for doing so
and then, you know, things go out of hand.
Yeah, just the Save the Rec Center storyline
as much as it is like a tried and true storyline
I thought was a nice touch here.
I could have used more Chippets in terms of like
introducing that side of this world and their specific dynamic,
but they were in it enough to be in it, you know,
and to be a specifically new presence for this movie.
That's cute.
So as much as I could have followed their perspective even more, you know,
I was like, cool, this is neat.
I like the array of things that we're in for.
It's pleasant enough.
And while, yes, this still isn't directly for me,
I've way less repelled, way less aggravated,
way less annoyed and frustrated,
and way less, yeah, just way less graded on and off put by things.
I look at it.
I hate, I hate being this way about any movie.
But yeah, that first movie definitely tried my patience.
And this one was much more.
John's lying.
He comes into the studio.
I'm going to be pissed about which movie today.
This movie is much more fun to watch.
I did look it up for you because I know you were curious.
It was $20,000 in the Brady Bunch movie.
This was 25.
So Betty Thomas is upping.
She's upping the ante for this film, okay?
adjusted for inflation.
And I have it on Rotten Tomatoes after we answer our Royal Rejects questions we're going to do.
Yeah, yeah, become a real reject.
We will answer your questions.
We will shout you out individually.
You can guide our reviews in the future.
Oh, yeah.
And we had Zach Levi, who is certainly not as beloved now as he was maybe then.
But he was an affable addition to the, it's funny, you said Paul Rudd and then I couldn't unthink Paul Rudd because part of me was like, if it had been Paul.
Rudd. This might have actually been
way better than you might expect. Not
to shade Zachary Levi. He was fine here.
I thought he was fun to watch. He's just got a certain
charm about him that he could get away with a character
like this. That's so one note.
Yeah. I mean, it's appropriate for this
movie. And I thought his hammy, sort
of dorky, you know,
slacker guy persona was
pretty enjoyable. And
you know, I was rooting for him to get with
that teacher. Miss Ortega.
That Miss Ortega.
So, yeah,
not amazing. By any stretch,
you know, there's certainly stuff about this
that could be better or more charming.
And before we get to...
Yeah, and before we get to the questions,
I will say this one of John and mine's complaints
from the first movie.
We know the movies about the chipmunks, of course.
We know the humans are not the focal point,
but we said they did not develop Claire and Dave's
relationship very much in the first film.
We would have liked that.
And they're like, we're going to do even less of that
with Toby is taking this one.
Except smarter choice to make her like,
oh, this is a person I went to school with way back.
in the day she works at the school now it's not like you're my ex who all of a sudden i just ran
into right outside my house and also do you live here i can't tell and now we're having dinner
i understand that but if i haven't seen someone in a few years or four years or five years and i
see them for the first time like we still got a spark up something it's we do but maybe that's just
me thing we do i mean they're both very good looking so it's just that's good enough we had a crush
on each other a few years ago let's let's do this yeah
But all in all, I would say,
the squeak will, it's a, it's a, it's a thumbs up for me, dog.
It was a squeak of a good time.
I had a, I would much sooner watch this again at some point in my life if I had to.
If John and I ever hang out and we have a choice between the first and the squeak,
well, I know which one John's choosing.
You know, call me crazy.
I know people probably will.
I'm happy to watch either or.
I know how hard this got clowned on, but let's see what people want to talk about.
Thank you to the Royal Rejects.
Fellow rejects.
Maybe you'll identify with what I'm about to say.
I've never had the healthiest relationship with money.
It's not because I'm a big spender or something like that.
I've just my entire life carried around this general anxiety around it.
A constant fear that I'm going to lose everything.
When I don't have much, I'm never going to gain anything.
Because, yeah, like, I'm a family, fought about money all the freaking time.
And, you know, we lost our home to bankruptcy when I was, like, much younger.
And even though I'm a grown adult now, I, that fear has.
was never evaporated. And that is why with today's sponsor, I signed up for them before they
ever partner with us. That is Acorns. I'm going to explain it to you in the most simple way because
it's simple to use. Acorns is an investing and savings app that makes your money grow in the

everyday purchases and invests it for you. So if you buy a cup of coffee for $3.60,
cents. Acorns will round it up to $4 and put that extra 40 cents to work for you. And I signed up for
them a couple years ago. So believe me, started off small and it's been paying off in a way that
helps bring more comfort in that anxiety financial heart of my life. I've been able to watch
that spare change turn into something real. Like sometimes when my mind's just racing or I'm
going down my little wormhole, sometimes checking that app actually does bring some comfort.
Because when I do, it reminds me I'm building something and I've already built something from it
already after a couple years and you can experience this too i know people where acorns their investment

Thank you again.
Who have chimed in.
Ruby Rogers is kicking us off.
Thank you so much.
Arguably.
One of the best film sequels, in my opinion.
Telling you, this is why I mentioned all these other sequels.
I hope you guys enjoyed it in the unlikely but not impossible scenario that the rejects adopted a trio of talking animals.
What kind would they be and how would y'all best exploit them with good intentions, of course.
Much love and appreciation.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic.
I like how we got a question from Rudy, and you shouted out Rudy earlier.
Rudy.
Rudy.
And I mentioned Shane Falco to which you had no expression or reaction to.
Yeah.
Yeah, Falco, the band.
Shane Falco, the replacement.
The replacements, John?
Oh, I got to see that again.
One of my favorite football sports movies, actually.
I only ever seen at the one time.
What three animals, talking animals, would I?
I would do a...
Capabaris.
I would do a tiger, a lion, and a cheetah,
just because they're all fierce, and they're not phased by anything,
and people would definitely not be afraid to be around them.
Yes.
I would exploit them.
and one of them's the king of the jungle
and also when one of them is a baby
I could go, huh, Hansevenia.
I don't know.
Hubba beats.
I would go with those three.
Wow.
Thank you, Hans Zimmer.
Those are pretty epic animal choices.
I guess we should just do all eagles
in honor of Theodore.
He wouldn't appreciate that.
But I know Johnny Lawrence would like an eagle.
He would.
He would fly in for like an eagle.
Yeah, I'm going capital.
Bad ass.
I think it would.
Or if we had like a trio,
of singing fish, honestly.
If we had like a fish tank in the lobby
and there's like a trio of singing fish,
that could be pretty cool.
Get three different, distinct kinds of fish.
Or you could go the Tiki Room route,
get some parrots that can sing
or some flowers that croon.
I like these ideas.
Yes, yes.
I want like a singing,
one of those big film lights.
You know, I feel like it would have to be
maybe not an animal at all.
It would be a piece of film equipment.
I don't know if Uncle Ian counts as an animal,
although he acted like an animal,
but I would say him doing the light
I would want that and exploit him.
Honestly, the light suit was boggaret.
Like, and again, props to David Cross for being so game to wear whatever silly costume.
Or whatever was asked of him.
He was like, I'll do it.
Let's go.
How much again are you paying me for this?
Okay, let's do it.
Doing the work.
Yeah, my talking, singing Capabara's every episode would sing the outro music like it's the
credits of an 80s movie where we now have a rap or a song that's about the movie we just
watched. That's how I would utilize
them. Or we could do
singing brand deals. We could have them do singing
brand deals. Or maybe like bespoke.
You know, we have our little like bumper
with a down to down
but you know
we can maybe get like a you know singing
version of that or something. We'll see.
Maybe you have their own podcast. Who knows?
Give us your suggestions of course.
All right. Rachel Cabo
or Cabot
depending. Love you guys.
We love you too, Rachel. I love you too.
first time leave the question
you picked a good one
which chipmunk is your favorite
mine is Theodore
Theodore is definitely the cutest one
I love how sensitive he is
Just how positive no better
Well I guess you can't say he's always positive
Because like in scary situations
He fears the worst
But he's still a very positive
And uplifting and upbeat character
He's this definitely the sweetest one
But I would have to go with Simon
Because I would say I identify
And resonate with Simon the most
I'm definitely like
him in a sense that I'm
like to think I'm responsible
and also I'm the OCD one
at my house ask my real
roomie Aaron he will tell you I'm the
I'm the one with the bug up my ass
at home I mean it's got to be clean
what's the taco under the pillow
Aaron
so that that's
that's me at home
so yeah I would say like
I would definitely identify
myself and resonate the most with
Simon so yeah
Theodore is the cutest for sure
And I actually got to feel that in this movie
Whereas in the previous movie
I had to struggle to feel that
I feel like I'm hurting you
Every time I express
I really don't ever often get this
Not positive about a movie
Or at least this negative about a movie
But yes
Hey feel your feelings John
Theodore is the cutest one
And I was definitely able to tap into that
In this movie
I would say yeah
I'm kind of as you know
They're very kind of similar actually
the Harry Potter houses
when you think about it
because like, you know,
Theodore,
not necessarily all the colors
kind of.
Theodore is the hufflepuff.
Simon is the Ravenclaw
and then Alvin is very much
a blend of Griffin's a combination
of Gryffindor and Slytherin.
Of course.
He's very much those two.
Or the or if it's night or in the morning.
Yeah.
And so I'm very much a cross,
I guess I would say,
between Simon and Theodore.
It's weird.
Like I think Theodore is the cutest.
Simon might be my
favorite just because yeah he would be the most like me generally and i thought simon was more palatable
in this movie as well because in the last movie like his intelligence and theodore's you know
kind cuteness are redeeming qualities but there was so much to overcome i i could see this movie there
was less to overcome so i could enjoy those qualities i could also see simon with you because simon is
so resourceful he's a puzzle solver he can figure shit out on a dime yeah that's that's you john needs to
yeah oh thanks brother but
Yeah, leave us your favorite chipmunks.
And who's you guys' favorite chip pets?
I wish we got to spend more direct time with that.
I would actually like that as well, but it's still the time we did get to spend.
This movie could have used an extra half hour, is all I'm saying.
Patricia Carrillo.
You are now the manager and guardian of a trio of talking and singing animals.
Oh, boy.
What are animal or mix of animals are they?
It's your first song.
They are covering.
Okay, so we'll revisit the first question.
Yes.
I got my Capabara band.
You've got your lion.
Cheetah and tiger.
Okay.
Be prepared.
Be prepared.
Be prepared.
Be prepared.
And I'm having Jeremy Irons sing it along with what's his name.
I have the voice actor's name in my face in my head, but I follow him on Instagram too.
Jim Cummings.
Is that his name?
He's like a famous.
Let me see.
Voice actor?
Yeah, very famous voice.
I mean, that is a famous voice actor, Jim Cummings.
I think it's Jim Cummings.
He does a bunch of the Winnie, the Pooh.
voices. Yep. Jim Cummings, that's
the one. Well, he actually sang a portion of
Be Prepared. Oh? Yeah, because Jeremy Irons
got really sick or something like that, so
Jeremy did a portion of that, and then Jim Cummings did
the resume. You couldn't even tell it was, it wasn't
Jeremy Irons. So I'll go with those two,
but that's the song I'm going with, Be Prepared,
because that's what we need to be in life. Prepare, John,
what about you? Oh, man.
What's
the first song they are
covering?
I was just listening to a song
called Tiny. More Thriller. Bubbles.
Yes, thriller.
Thriller is a good...
Actually, you know, I don't think a thriller Chipmunk would be that bad.
I think that could be a fun.
I think the more novelty you're going, the better.
So, yeah, let's do that.
Let's see.
Let's get a Dragon Force cover.
I think that through the fire and the flames is obviously the one most people reach for.
Maybe a proto-Men Chipmunk edition.
Do you light up the night?
How about we do?
Let's see, what's another good one?
What's the song from...
Tears for fears.
Everybody wants to rule the world.
I was about to say that.
I swear on my life,
I was about to say it.
I swear to God I was about to say that.
Oh my God.
That's so funny.
We're like two.
Everybody's working for the weekend.
That's another good one for the chipmunks.
I swear I was about to say that.
That's so funny.
How about like a Rob zombie,
Dragula?
We're doing Dragula all day.
Oh, or that one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Never go stop.
Never go stop.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Get a little Power Man 5,000 in there.
You know, do Supernova goes pop or something like that.
How about this?
You're the best.
All right.
Definitely.
Why we go Disney, let's do, let's get down to business to defeat the Huns, you know.
Let's get down to business.
See?
Do you defeat?
That's disturbing.
Do you have a little chipmunk living inside?
Okay.
Next, if we get, if we're lucky enough to do the third film,
just do the road chip.
Yeah, I'm sure nobody would.
You will have to provide.
I think most of you are already annoyed by my regular voice,
so maybe we'll try something different here.
I think our audio interface here does have a chipmunk vocal filter.
So, yeah, Sail by Awall Nation.
Let's do that.
How about a white stripes track?
Let's do fell in love with a girl, chipmunk style,
or icky thump or something like that.
I foresee all these ones being amazing choices.
How about corn?
I know I said death tones last time.
My brother loved that band.
Really?
Dude, Jonathan Davis, Chipmunk.
Let's do this thing.
You know, we can go ghost.
Let's get some blasphemous chipmunks.
Let's get Alvin dressed up as Papa Emeritus.
I want to hear Rotten Tomatoes before we get out of here.
First movie?
First movie.
Critics score first.
20%.
28.
Okay.
Audience.
52%.
64.
All right.
Last thing and then we're out of here.
Critics for this movie, Squeakwell.
13%.
21%.
21%?
Audience.
It's just 52 again.
Oh, so close.
Oh, 49.
49.
I would flip these.
I would give this one 28%.
I had a feeling John was not going to be in agreement with the scores.
I would give.
This one, yeah, the higher tomato score.
I'm less dismayed knowing that they're not super far apart.
But yeah, I think this was definitely, I would rate this higher for sure.
For a hot, for sure.
It was enjoyable.
It was entertaining.
It was a fun time.
I like the songs.
Like the messages about responsibility.
Yeah.
I still want to play.
I want to eat, sleep and play video games, though.
Alvin's got to learn a lesson.
And then I'll get a woman like Mr.
If I just eat, sleep and play video games, I'll get a, be a team player.
He's got to learn to be a brother to his brothers and to know.
I mean, you know, he can play football.
That's not the problem.
But you've got to be responsible and you've got to be upfront and honest with how you're developing, what your feelings are.
And Alvin really went through that this time.
What I was going to say is if I just eat sleep and play video games, I'll get a woman that looks like Ms. Ortega.
There you go.
That's another story.
Yeah.
But also I probably need to look a little like Zacharyl, too, which I don't.
I wonder if anyone's favorite chipmunk in these movies is Alvin.
He's just such a menace
Alvin is such a menace
in this movie
He's he's
Alvin needs an attitude adjustment
The next one
I think Alvin
I hope these are
Britney will keep him in check
I hope these are a three movie arc
Of Alvin learning
To you know kind of be aware of himself
And aware of other people
And he's learning to actually
coexist with and consider others before himself
Like we already laid those scenes here
like, you know, Alvin was the most insufferable one in the first movie.
And in this movie, he's still kind of a rascal, a bit of a jerk at times, but he's not
like as repellent so that you can kind of be like, yeah.
So maybe by the third movie, I'll be like, I like this Alvin.
No, he's going to be your favorite chip monk at the end of that film.
The first movie, I was like, don't bring Alvin anywhere near me.
Second movie, I'm like, Alvin's fine.
They can hang out.
He can hang out.
He's fine.
This was their plan.
This was their plan.
They had a plan of a trilogy.
I'm going to be like, you know what, Alvin, you can come sit on my shoulder.
We can hang out.
But anyway, gang, leave us your thoughts on the squeakual.
And we'll catch you sometime soon, hopefully, for a road chip.
I don't know where we're going, but I know where we've been.
And I hope we get lots and lots of highway tunes coming our way.
Don't forget to eat sleep and play video games.
Eat sleep, play video games.
Alvin!
