Starting point is 00:00:00 When you fly an Emirates business class, and you're picked up by your private, luxury, chauffeur-driven car, you'll see that your vacation isn't really over until your flight is over. Fly, Emirates. Fly better. Thank you to Shopify for sponsoring this video. More on them in just a bit. Donald, give us a countdown, my friend. All right, sinking up, Alvin and the chipmunks, about to have our lives. and through. A true. I'm a one.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Yeah, Johnnold, I love it. Well, all right, gang, as we let these lovely images whizz past us. Well, that was Alvin and the Chipmunks, the 2007 film. We hope you guys enjoyed it. If you're on YouTube, make sure you do all the YouTube stuff. Subscribe, hit the like button. And don't forget to, is there anything else they should forget?
Starting point is 00:01:00 forget to do i don't know but thank you so much to prepper for editing down these highlights we appreciate you i'm sure it was quite a challenge with a musical like this so we appreciate all their hard work they're the mvps here and we appreciate them and if you are listening to us on apple or spotify if you don't mind giving us a five-star ring we would appreciate it do it john old tant drew the bang to my flash the flash to my bang how are you feeling oh boy i have I need to collect my thoughts. Which song was your favorite? It's the classic Christmas one for me.
Starting point is 00:01:38 It's probably still the classic Christmas song. Forgive me if I'm a stick in the mud. But yes, I have feeling all kinds of things right now. I mean, I certainly had fun watching this with you. This was, you know, this movie has a reputation at this point as one of those, you know, sort of. You know, it's a late period sort of Hollywood revitalization of a classic, you know, kid-oriented property that they've modernized for the now. I don't know if I, I don't know if I like traditionally liked it, but I certainly had fun watching it. I really like that Jason Lee, everybody showed up and took it seriously in the way that you need.
Starting point is 00:02:30 to let's see what do we got D-Town Syndicate for D-Town Entertainment I was trying to see if they had the vocalists but but yeah you know I like that Jason Lee was really earnest and he really you know brought a natural presence to the role you know he was the right height for the comedy but he was you know endearing enough to kind of help to center and ground things actually kind of missed him when he disappears in the later part
Starting point is 00:03:00 of the movie and you are mostly with fun uncle Ian and yeah you know David Cross delightfully smarmy and slimy and you know an unsavory character in a fun sort of way your girl from entourage I thought was very charming
Starting point is 00:03:18 she she's very much I think an afterthought to the plot you know when they're sitting down to have like a dinner date I was like wait a minute I even though they're saying in the text of the scene is not a date I was still like wait a minute when did we set this up um well they set it up but earlier well we set we set up the characters but i'm talking about like the actual like flow of their plot together i was like we had that weird run-in outside their porch dave's porch running into her and her being like you know right i think
Starting point is 00:03:47 i told you never just talked to me you're saying the actual character set-ups not the actual date itself yeah the way the the you know story moved to incorporate that stuff she certainly felt like kind of sporadic in how she would pop up but I liked her presence the three chipmugs I found simultaneous
Starting point is 00:04:08 you know they they were endearing at times I was trying to pick out the nuances of the vocal performances which is kind of tough to do because the chipmunk effect is just so encompassing they definitely got
Starting point is 00:04:24 on my nerves half the time they were very chaotic to sit with so like i didn't i don't know i feel like a movie like this maybe should leave you with the feeling of like oh man i would love to have my own precocious trio of chipmunks to live with and write songs for and watching a movie like this i was like i could do without living that life certainly i don't need to but uh but yeah uh i had fun watching this with you i'm glad to hear you at i had fun watching this with you that's good i'm sorry that they drove you nuts i know it's fine I mean, like, it's, I think that was, I guess if I have a legitimate criticism, you know, this isn't like your big critic had to be.
Starting point is 00:05:03 If I had a legitimate criticism, I guess what I wished they had was just a bit more earnest heart, especially with a character like Alvin, like he has that moment at the very end where he's like, I miss my friend Dave, I love you, okay, fine, we're done. I love you, Dave. I'll scream it on the roofs. Yeah, and I liked that, but, you know, Alvin never really had any moments of tenderness. that I... He didn't naturally grow for you Yeah, it's like Theodore is the sweetest one
Starting point is 00:05:32 and is the easiest to excuse when his hijinks get grading. Simon, like, again, his demeanor is personable enough or palatable enough that I wasn't, you know, too aggravated. Alvin, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:46 the most of all of them, I thought was a bit obnoxious. You know, but again, I respect that this isn't aimed directly at me And two, I mean, I have some level of association with the classic Christmas song and some of the old cartoons and stuff. And so, to me, this isn't necessarily the approach I would take when transcribing this to the modern times. But I get how and why it exists the way it does.
Starting point is 00:06:15 I think for me, like, a lot of the needle drops aren't, they're just not like, they're largely modern songs. They started with that Gavin Negras song, and then they did, you know, the classic Christmas song for the Chipmunks, the Witch Doctor song. But, you know, they had a lot of, like, you know, cool hip-hop influenced music for the Chipmunks to breakdance to.
Starting point is 00:06:39 And, you know, a part of that feels very much like the quintessentially cringe, like, hey, we're updating these for the hip kids today. They're all breakdancing and stuff. And, yeah, like, you know, there were some moments of dark humor that, was for the adults that I appreciated, but there was a lot in here
Starting point is 00:06:58 that I think is going to play much better to children than it will play to me. I would say so. The dark humor coming from Dave's first song at Uncle Ian's office. I was like, oh, wow, that song is fascinating. Yeah. Buddy, are you okay?
Starting point is 00:07:13 And it's too. I don't love the, again, this is personal preference. I don't love when they take songs and like hyper-produced them and like everything is just vocal runs and it all sounds like it was recorded in a space station and granted it's chipmunks
Starting point is 00:07:33 like everything goes out the window when you have everyone's voice done up like that but to me there's like a again there's a weird simultaneous effect of like I can kind of see the front of the whimsy but also like part of my brain is like vibrating in a way I can't quite settle with
Starting point is 00:07:51 when yeah they're doing these like crazy vocal runs over like modern hip hop tracks and the production is just so sleek and I don't know, I think there's an element of charm and earnest heart that the movie could have done
Starting point is 00:08:07 better to bring to the forefront but as it stands I didn't not have fun with you I always have fun with you. I always have fun with you no matter what we watch Johnald and you know what I have to say about everything everything is awesome what I will say about this film
Starting point is 00:08:25 my good friend my brother from another mother I had a blast watching it is it the greatest animated or musical film I've ever seen no I wouldn't put it up there I think this film knew what it was and what it wanted to be
Starting point is 00:08:36 so I can respect that from it I guess so I appreciated Jason Lee's performance in the film I think as you said he was earnest he was very sincere he was very warm in the film and I did it
Starting point is 00:08:48 it was pretty believable it was a little bit generic with how he his his arc in the film on accepting the family that the found family that he now has and how he grew so i but i still thought it was cute again being the film knew what it was as i just pointed out i still i still thought found it to be rather charming and rather and him also to be charming i would have liked even though the films more on the the the kid's side than the adult side i love when kid films like this which are tart targeted at kilmsk which are targeted at kids can blend uh hit adults and kids the can blend the two
Starting point is 00:09:29 together what i mean by that is like a toy story i think that hits both for adults and children when you can target both i think those are my favorite types of films like that so and i think what i'm trying to articulate is here like just the relationship family movies versus movies for kids for sure i think directly for kids yeah just like even the relationship when it comes to Claire and Dave, I think their chemistry is great and I see where they were trying to go with that, but it didn't have that natural,
Starting point is 00:09:59 organic feel, especially the flow of it. And like you said, when she's, we're like, oh, we're setting this up and then she's just there. And I know that, but... I wish we had time to develop chemistry with them. We got, like, their history. Well, we... And then a bunch of, like, random little moments.
Starting point is 00:10:13 And we saw some visual narration of her seeing him and, like, seeing him the chipmunks getting more famous. I did like some of the stuff that they were getting into with the chipmunks getting more famous and letting the fame get to their head and getting more arrogant and cocky with that. That is something that happens with real people. So that is some grounded residency that's very applicable. So I thought that was really good stuff right there as well.
Starting point is 00:10:42 And I like the other thing where the chipmunks were understanding that, hey, material things are very nice, but love is more important than materialistic things. So, you know, it is a materialistic world, but love conquers all. And I think that was a nice message to send throughout the film. And as strict as Dave could be, like he wanted what was best for the chipmunks. And I think they understood that I really like David Cross's performance.
Starting point is 00:11:09 He knows what film he's in, and he's being very cartoonish. He's a great villain. Yeah, yeah. He may have been my favorite person to watch. watch for sure like i like he was he was chewing up the scenery and having fun yeah so it was it was a blast to watch him do his thing in this movie yeah you know like a good telltale lesson for the kids like ah you know some some slick executive type comes offered you the wild maybe think twice
Starting point is 00:11:37 yeah and again to specify like what kind of movie they know that they're making just the little thing of the metadness of him when i can't remember it was alvin or theater who jumped into the pool from being shot out of the tennis. Theodore. He puts up it's sorry.
Starting point is 00:11:55 It was Simon. Oh, Simon. Sorry. He put up the dollar sign instead of a number. I'm like, exactly. He's like,
Starting point is 00:12:01 I don't care as long as they make me money, do whatever you want to do. So it's not out of love. It's as long as you can make me money. That's what I care about. And also too when Simon came into, he was having a nightmare.
Starting point is 00:12:15 He's like, he's going into the details of what his, nightmares are throughout the day. It's like, I don't really give a crap what your nightmare is get out of here. Whereas Dave is more encompassing and more welcoming and warm. This is more of a human being. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 00:12:30 For sure. And there was no type of humanization of Uncle Ian. He was just all about the dollar signs. No one, especially as the movie goes, because at first you're sort of like, oh, maybe, maybe he's just like a, you know, kind of one of those I'm just a friend who will tell you.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Who needs enemies kind of guys. Yeah, but I'm a friend who will tell you what you need to hear, even if it's the mean thing. I started wondering if they were actual friends at the beginning, and then, yeah, partway through, you're like, oh, no, this guy's a monster. Nah. He just, if you can make me a profit,
Starting point is 00:13:00 we're friends. Yeah. And, you know, I mean, I liked that this was so much about like, oh, yeah, you know, Dave's a struggling songwriter and oh, they're, you know, these chipmunks come in and they find each other and they start this musical career. And it's cute to see, like, their ideas of like, oh, hey, we got the
Starting point is 00:13:16 sweaters and we got the names and we got the you know here's where simon's glasses came from and blah blah blah like it's a meme now to do stuff like that but you know what fine like i'm aware of those things so it's like oh yeah is i have it in the chipmunk stuff and what i'm also talking before we're about to get to the questions here in a moment what i was talking about to a family film that's more centered for adults and children just for instance talking about claire and dave like earlier on in the film dave and dave and Claire were not together and Dave wasn't even listening to her, had the emotional intelligence
Starting point is 00:13:47 to read the room when they were talking. I would have liked for that to develop more. You know, and as he was growing to come to this family lifestyle, I'm like he's working on himself, he's evolving, he's growing. I wanted to see a... I know the film's not focused on that, but I would have liked to have seen more of that.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Yeah. And we didn't get that at all. It's a weird one because, yeah, it's like, you know, to make this a better rounded movie, you would have to do stuff that, like, isn't the point of being here, so you're like... But it's still... It adds human depth to the film, and I think, like, as an adult, at least I try to act like one, but I fail a lot of the times, I would have appreciated just a little bit of depth, even in five to ten minutes. I would have appreciated that, at least from that relationship standpoint.
Starting point is 00:14:28 It would sure be nice to have some stuff for the parents in the audience, because this is, to me, this is not one of those movies that's like, oh, anybody, like, yeah, it's not in that family, like, oh, anyone of any walk of life or age. can get something out of this. This is squarely for me and the like this is for kids and kids will have the most fun with what this is trying to do because yeah, I don't know. Like I guess for me the biggest part of the whole like story
Starting point is 00:14:57 aspect is like you want this to be such that you feel along with Dave that the chipmunks are a complete handful and they're in some ways yes like a nightmare but also you want to see what's truly lovable about the three of them about their dynamic how they all even though they drive each other
Starting point is 00:15:13 crazy make each other better in some way and uh you know by the end i was happy for them to be reunited because i like love but like this wasn't a film where i felt in a big way like oh love one at the end and oh man i'm so glad that their little family came together or you know what even though they drove me crazy some of the time i friggin i love these little guys yeah it didn't didn't leave me with those feelings absolutely i wasn't invested it didn't invest me enough I think I also just get a kick out of Jason Lee's. Like everything he does is so natural except his Alvin scream, which again has to sound like how it did in the cartoons.
Starting point is 00:15:54 It's just a funny thing because like he delivers that particular word, that line like unlike any other in the movie. But yes, the music in this especially kind of rattled my teeth a little bit. I could hear it from you when it was happening. I also wanted to point out as well that I know I was saying we didn't really get the development of that relationship or him like evolving and growing. I do know that he was evolving and growing when it comes to family lifestyle and, you know, finally accepting, yeah, I'm finally accepting that he missed the chipmunks and wanted to be their surrogate father, found family. Of course, I get all that. But I still was missing that part of the relationship between Claire and Dave.
Starting point is 00:16:38 But that's neither here nor there. We're going to get into questions. Claire is more of a functional character than an emotional character sadly she's very you know charming Yeah for sure I liked her performance Friend of the channel I gotta tell you something
Starting point is 00:16:53 Before we ever started this YouTube channel John and I actually first tried doing T-shirt designs let me tell you It did not go well We did not know how to sell a darn thing So we can that And eventually YouTube became a thing But in our heart of hearts

Starting point is 00:18:22 All right, from Jaden Rhodes. Jaden, thank you so much for being a Royal Reject and for asking us a question. We appreciate you so much. The movie has basically become a big meme. Yep. I'm seeing at least four or five a week from this movie alone.
Starting point is 00:18:36 if y'all have seen any you have a favorite one oh golly i have no idea i have not seen any of the oh here that's what we're doing here those are gifts and stuff but let's let's see if there are any like specific memes alvin and the chipmunks meme i like that one i know it's a gift that's a cute gift i like this gift i mean i'm sure people use them as emotes but uh oh my god boy I don't know if I've seen any of these memes I like the top what's the Taco Tuesday Wednesday Wednesday? I don't know where do you see that Oh I just saw one and then now it's
Starting point is 00:19:13 Taco Tuesday Oh there it's I'm all in That one's good I like that You know what? Send us I have seen Neri Greatest Chipmunk song Greatest Chipmunk movie One way trip to your ball
Starting point is 00:19:27 I don't know what any of these memes pertained to And I'm a little Afraid to get lost down this rabbit hole send us your favorites i don't first we go cute mode then we go lunch mode then we go mastodon what the send us your best alvin the chumugs memes because this rabbit hole is going to take us
Starting point is 00:19:46 i'm sure to mind bending places yes we'll be here all night and i don't know if i have the mental fortitude to confront that right now but uh thank you so much for asking and yeah please load us up by tomorrow morning i want the memes all the memes on our desk All right. Lisa, Marie. Hey.
Starting point is 00:20:07 What song? If any, would you like to hear covered by Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, and why? It's for the thriller. That wouldn't be bad. I think that'd be a fun. I'm a diehard 80s fan. I think Michael Jackson's a great entertainer. He's clearly one of the best singers of all time.
Starting point is 00:20:27 My humble opinion. I just think that'd be a great song for them to cover. I think that'd be a very natural choice as well. so that would be my reasoning why. What about you, John? Do you want some, maybe an original song that they could just make up as well?
Starting point is 00:20:40 I don't know. We're going deaf tones, changing the house of flies. Yes, yes, of course. We are going disturbed, down with the sickness. Let's do Kate Bush running up that hill,
Starting point is 00:20:55 chipmunk style. I'd actually be down for running up that hill. There you go. Stick with me, kid. Yes. Stick with me, Andrew. Yeah, yeah. That was a great song.
Starting point is 00:21:07 You know, Gorillaz, Clint Eastwood. Get off my mind. Kendrick Lamar, not like us. I think that would be a great chipmunk jam. That'd be a good one. Hopefully they break dance all throughout that number. An honest answer. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:21:24 I got to say, I don't love. I was going to say you were talking through most of the songs about which ones you didn't like. I don't love the way the music is handled in this movie. And so I don't know if I want to hear anything transcribed into this style. If it was produced the way the old school ones are, maybe some like old teaky songs. I don't know. Like I always imagine how when the chipmunks singing older things. It kind of creates a dissonance when they're singing something that's like too modern or too recent.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Yeah. I could see Michael Jekino like doing something special with the chipmunk. That would be, that would be lovely. He's too good not to. I'll try and ruminate here for a few minutes as to like a legitimate. song. Call me maybe. Maybe. I don't know. It seems like a fitting chipmunk song.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Brick in the wall. I'm just going to name, I'm not going to name serious answers. I don't know what a good serious answer would be. Let us know in the comment section. What song would you guys like? It's all Christmas songs. Alvin and the chipmunks to do. Yeah. I'd actually be fascinated to hear. Maybe the trolley song from Meet Me in St. Louis. There you go.
Starting point is 00:22:27 Maybe, uh, maybe I don't know. We love El or what's the Yeah, I love L.A.? Randy Newman. You've got a friend in me? Yeah, there you go. One of those kind of Randy Nguyen songs.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Yeah, I still think Thriller is. Hip to B. Square. Yes. That would be actually, Chip to be square. There we go. Chip to be square. There's your answer. We're locking it in.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Power of love. Locking it in. Done. Thank you for the question, Lisa. All right. Last question here is from Jay Russian. What up, Jay?
Starting point is 00:22:58 Thank you so much for being a royal reject and for asking us a question. we appreciate you so much like which of the chipmunks are you most like here I guess probably Simon I guess I would be probably yeah Simon John would want to sleep with any of us
Starting point is 00:23:16 if he was having a nightmare That's Deodor I mean part of me Wasn't that Simon? No I was Deodor Because Deodor's like the youngest He's the little chubby He's like scared
Starting point is 00:23:25 He's the most childlike Oh I think Alvin's like The cool confident one Simon is the smart one Theodore's like the plucky He's Hufflepuffe I think we know which one then I am
Starting point is 00:23:37 Alvin is a combination of Gryffindore And Slytherin Simon is Ravenclaw And Theodore is Hufflepuffe So do I pick Simon Just for this or no You're probably a bit I think we're both a bit of a Simon
Starting point is 00:23:50 With some like Theodore on the side I think I'm most of a Simon Then probably a Theodore next than Alvin last I would imagine some people think I'm pretty arrogant and cocky So they might They might include me in Alvin. I would say, though, I'm more of a Simon.
Starting point is 00:24:05 I can be direct like an Alvin, for sure. I've evolved into that. But I try to be kind as well. I try not to be a douche, but at the same point, I try to make sure people don't mistake my kindness or weakness. So I would say, though, I'm more like a Simon, for sure. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:24 But let us know in the comments as well. Which Chipmunk do you most resonate with? I would actually say I'm very similar to Dave, although I feel like I've got a little more emotional intelligence than him. And I know how to read the room a little bit better. Although he was very charming and sweet too. I just mean in terms of with a woman, but that's another story.
Starting point is 00:24:45 If they would have kind of progressed that a little bit more, I could have a better reading on that. They left it so limited. So I'm just going based off of one or two scenes. So, yeah. I'm not fat. I'm just so freaking sexy, it overflows. I'm like Uncle E.
Starting point is 00:25:02 I'm like... This is just a meme of Theodore and it just says the F word on it. You know what? John, I've changed my mind. John, I'm like Uncle Ian. I just, I think of everyone like dollar signs who can benefit me the most.
Starting point is 00:25:13 What's you do in my gangers? Oh, these are wild. Oh, right. John's so locked into the memes he didn't even hear me. I heard it all. You're... Can you make me dollars, John?
Starting point is 00:25:23 I can make you all the dollars as long as you sing in front of Uncle Ian. You can be in my life. embarrass me again. I'll have to throw my instruments back out in the rain. John, do you... I know we got to get out of here like in the next minute or so.
