Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey dive into the outrageous world of 1999’s raunchy spoof comedy classic, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, directed by Jay Roach. The sequel to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery brings back Mike Myers (Wayne’s World, Shrek) in triple duty as groovy spy Austin Powers, the maniacal Dr. Evil, and the bizarre Fat Bastard. Joining him is Heather Graham (Boogie Nights, Drugstore Cowboy) as Felicity Shagwell, Austin’s new partner in espionage, alongside Michael York (Logan’s Run, Cabaret) as Basil Exposition and Robert Wagner (Hart to Hart) as Number Two. Rob Lowe (Parks and Recreation, St. Elmo’s Fire) also hilariously plays the younger version of Number Two, while Seth Green (Family Guy, Robot Chicken) returns as Scott Evil, and Verne Troyer delivers one of cinema’s most iconic comedy sidekicks as Mini-Me. This outrageous sequel finds Dr. Evil traveling back to the 1960s to steal Austin’s mojo, forcing Powers and Felicity to stop him in a time-travel romp filled with over-the-top parody, ridiculous gadgets, and quotable one-liners. Famous scenes include the introduction of Mini-Me, Fat Bastard’s “I eat because I’m unhappy” gag, and the groovy “mojo” storyline that cemented the movie as a pop culture phenomenon. With outrageous humor, cheeky spy send-ups, and a now-legendary soundtrack featuring Madonna’s “Beautiful Stranger,” this entry remains one of the most beloved comedies of the late ‘90s. Starting point is 00:01:58 Let's watch Austin Powers. Oh, my. Okay, before we read a couple questions, just a general thought. Did this movie make you horny, baby? Yeah, my God. Did it make you Randy, baby? Yeah. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:02:20 It did make you, it made you horny open. Check it. Just check it. There's some titillating scenes. There's some titillating moments. Very titillating. So I wouldn't blame you if you did. If you were.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Did it make you round? Yes. I am quite Randall at this moment. I'm randolized. I'm Randall Park. I don't even understand. Oh my. Randulated.
Starting point is 00:02:49 But yeah. Before we get into the things, how this will make you feel, man? It made me, I had. Good time. It was fun. I mean, it definitely is consistent with the previous one in terms of its brand of comedy. For sure. But it was nice to be back in the 60s.
Starting point is 00:03:07 It was nice to be, you know, on the moon and, you know, just taking the concept and, you know, both doing all the sort of requisite bits that we've come to expect from the first movie, but also just having more fun with the wacky 60s spy movie vibe. Yeah, that's a good time. Yeah. How about you? Yeah, it was cool. It was a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:03:30 I know that there were some stuff that I've seen either from my childhood or remnants of my cultural osmosis with a fat bastard in. And meaning me. People, kids, like, when this came out, I remember, like, kids were always quoting fat bastard, always doing this. Oh, it was getting my belly in my belly. I vaguely remember just the two of us. Talking about crap.
Starting point is 00:03:57 somebody gave me the bigger chunks of corn and my crap thing at some point people would sing the the baby bag yeah uh-huh yeah it was it was fun it was fun definitely totally consistent with the first one i know why this is a cold classic uh yeah i i want to say like the first one slightly more but i really appreciate all the flourishes in this one um just with even the i like the the will feral bit a little bit more and this one I thought it was really funny the diversity of the having the
Starting point is 00:04:30 three questions in a row before you actually answers that was a funny getting hurt yeah yeah this movie definitely it's like 70% story 30% bit and I respect it for that yeah I think it's a formula
Starting point is 00:04:47 that has proven to make this a cold classic and yeah it continues to be a good time sure in fact here was Let's jump right into questions then because Michael Medina Couturio wants to know. Jaron, hey guys. Hey, you. Thanks for chiming in. What did you think of this one compared to the first?
Starting point is 00:05:05 Heather Graham was the highlight of the movie from me, Fat Baster, and many me make their debut and definitely debut and definitely deliver as well. Of the new characters, were there any faves? Ooh, yeah, I felt like mini me and Fat Baxter were definitely my faves. I like the, I think I like the first girl more. I think Vanessa was it? Yeah, Elizabeth Hurley. Yeah, because I feel like there's a little bit more dynamic there with like them falling in love.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And she was like, no, you can't do that. It's the 90s. And then she like falls for his charms or Heather Graham was for him for the jump. Yeah, she's much more on his wavelength. So there's less of that like friction happening. Yeah. And I missed that bit of friction and the satisfying culmination of the two of them. But, you know, she's still, she's still fun, you know, I feel like she, she leads with her sexual charms, her mojo, if you will.
Starting point is 00:05:58 And, you know, that was fun just watching the playoff of each other. But yeah, definitely a fat bastard admitting me were my favorite new editions. What about you? Yeah. I'm trying to think who else, who else did we get? I mean, it was fun to have Robert Roblo playing Robert Wagner just for, you know, he just kind of showed up and did it. uh part of me almost expected like more insanity out of that um but yeah i mean unless i'm forgetting anybody yeah i feel like your your main introductions or fat bastard minnie me and felicity uh mini me is
Starting point is 00:06:33 obviously the most endearing and adorable because he's just like a little creature um i like i do i really liked her energy i really like what she brought to it i like the concept a lot i had a lot of fun watching her i think they could have done maybe a little bit more with the fact that she's like an American intelligence agent and I don't know like I think yeah it's it's fun to me
Starting point is 00:06:57 to have a you know romantic interest who's also like in some ways is equal and she you know very is clearly inspired by his brand of spy work so I like that as a game I just think that yeah like there were
Starting point is 00:07:10 instances and moments where they could have just thrown a little bit more flavor on to what she had to do on screen yeah and i feel like awesome did more spy stuff from the first one they did in this one a little bit yeah yeah yeah that was another a bit uh a bit missing for me in this one i mean not let's say that i didn't enjoy it but i like the he's the spy the the 60s groovy spy so yeah i enjoyed uh that stuff i enjoy that aspect of of watching his character do stuff because he's
Starting point is 00:07:42 he's silly but he's also good at what he does yeah yeah yeah yeah and i think think I like I appreciate that I think they could have maybe distributed some of that more evenly between the two of them at times just so that because so they can both again like be the team the pair of spies you know who are I don't know I feel like in a bond when you whenever you come across one of these characters who's like not just a femme fatale love you know bond girl but who is actually like an agent who is you know on a similar level but who is equally free with their inhibition. and things yeah I feel like they gave more to Dr. Evil and his side of the story in this one they did the Austin Powers but even the Austin Powers are still very prevalent in the movie but yeah I would I would say those are the things that I like and those those are my reasons for liking the first one more yeah yeah I mean yeah it's I'm trying to I'm trying to choose I think the first one has at least that crackle of like okay it's it's fresh and it's new you know there's a moment I never you know I never got bored I was never like counting the minutes or anything There were some moments in the, you know, three quarters of the way point where it's like, you know, you kind of know what's happening, you know what the movie's doing. And there's not quite as much, like, there are new characters to add new bits and stuff like that. But yeah, like, you know, you kind of, in terms of like what the movie is doing in its own dynamics, you know, there's not as much sort of building past a certain point. but yeah i mean i feel like this was still really much in the spirit and really fun and uh i would put them kind of neck in neck it's like there are certain elements of this one that i appreciate
Starting point is 00:09:25 that could bump it up to my to to being of my favor a little bit more than one there's certain things i like about one a little bit more than this i'm going to have to reflect on that a little bit um but i had a great time watching both for sure um thank you very much for inquiring though and uh hey let's move on to brian reed Do you think Minnie Me was the best addition to the Austin Power series so far? He is my favorite. Yeah, I thought he was great. I thought he did a really good job.
Starting point is 00:09:58 He was hilarious with his minimal lines with mostly physical comedy. My favorite bit was probably him like humping the laser. That was hilarious to me. I'm surprised they didn't go a bit longer with that bit. I know this, these movies so far have had a trend of like kind of stretching their bits out. it's part of the comedy like push like pushing it to the point where it's funny it's not funny and then they've done it so long it wraps wrap back wraps back around to funny again yeah so i think that would have been one for me um that could have worked but yeah i do i mean yeah i think of the three
Starting point is 00:10:31 obviously like fab bastard bastard bastard is supposed to be off putting uh i get a highly quotable uh you know it's not my the first kind of humor i reach for as my favoritist uh and i do think that Me was fun because you've got this mirror aspect of the performance where he and Mike Myers have to play off each other in that way. And also he gets to be this, again, little creature man. And there's a lot of stuff that's done with him that doesn't rely on dialogue, which is always a fun kind of prospect and idea to me. So, yeah, I would say, I mean, like, I thought all the editions were good. I mean, in some ways, I really like Heather Graham a lot. I don't, expect her to stick around I don't feel like any it's the kind of franchise where obviously the trope is that like whoever the prominent female character was
Starting point is 00:11:24 last time is probably not going to be back this time you know it's the rare James Bond that features a returning love interest of any kind yeah or romantic physical prospect yeah but they'll probably make some kind of joke about it this movie so far as soon to be very tongue-in-cheek
Starting point is 00:11:41 about their their tropes and like is she going to become a fembi also for the next one or something like that. I do appreciate that at least Elizabeth Early was here to do the Fembaid thing. Yeah, that was very fun. But yeah, Mini Me, definitely a good audition. Addition, sorry, to the Austin
Starting point is 00:11:57 Powers series. Absolutely. And I caught it, clearly, clearly a good idea because cultural osmosis, you know Mini Me, without even having to watch the movies. Exactly, no. It was one of the highlights that stand the test of time. Yeah, and when he showed up the first time, I had
Starting point is 00:12:12 forgotten, and then I was like, oh, Oh shit, like a bunch of just, yeah, feelings from the moment back when came flooding back. But yeah, thank you, Brian. Let's move on to Captain Fernandez. Don't worry, I'm kind of off-roading. Okay. I'm kind of trying to sculpt based on topics. So Captain Fernandez wants to know that the series relies on a lot of tropes from spy films in the 1960s,
Starting point is 00:12:39 approximately 30 years from when the movies were made. If an equivalent spoof series was made today, what to spy and action tropes from the late 80s and 90s would you like to see? I don't know. That's a quality question. I wish I saw more like 80s, 90s movies to give you a proper, you know, thing about this.
Starting point is 00:13:06 But, you know, there's tons of tropes that they can... I mean, there's tons of, yeah, there's tons of fashion and there's tons of like architectural earmarks i mean if it's the 80s i guess everyone would have to be and the 90s you could have everyone doing cocaine uh you know um goodness i guess we yeah is so an equivalent spoof series made today what spy and action tropes yeah okay i guess an action movie i don't know maybe it's more of a superhero trope but the 2010s really like to do i don't know this isn't exactly on the question but if we're going to trope movie things the sky beam sky beams we got away from sky beams yeah the most think what are there a spy action
Starting point is 00:13:48 trope I mean like I'm trying to think what like fast and furious but that's that's later that that's 2010's tropes and stuff like that yeah oh golly the use of house of pain just at any point jump jump around okay just would have to be there sure yeah um golly yeah I guess yeah the the crazy fashions you have a lot of shoulder pads a lot of bright colors a lot of big loud patterns um i mean machismo i guess you for the 80s and 90s you're dealing with like i'm like bad boys yeah so a lot of slow mo for sure a lot of big explosions or guys don't look back at them yeah a lot of cool ass shots a lot of yeah a lot of like swooping angles and like girls butts and like five angles on an explosion
Starting point is 00:14:36 um freaking gadget i mean gadgets have only gotten crazy gadgets galore right i feel like would you do would it still be like the maybe we can do a buddy cop a buddy cop parody would be fun dude of the 80s and 90s if like those were 80s 90s were like the time for the the the buddy cop odd couple starsky and hutch the movie definitely has that i would say i am not star skiing hutch is yeah is like a perfect buddy cop movie spoof oh yeah i want to watch that yeah and that movie did a 21 jump street i think before 21 jump street did which is like let's do a reboot but it's funny but it's still kind of the thing were they doing like a dukes of hazard kind of thing uh i haven't seen the
Starting point is 00:15:22 the movie version of dukes of hazard but i kind of assume probably i think i don't know if dukes of hazard the movie maybe tried to more because you know duke's of hazard they're like rowdy So, like, I could imagine that movie trying to more authentically capture what Dukes of Hazard was. Whereas, like, Starskin, Hutch, I don't think was a comedy show. It was like an actual buddy cop show. So the movie is definitely, like, making a... Oh, those are real things, Star Sken Hutch. I didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's real. Yeah, yeah, yeah, because the car and the two guys and, yeah, it's... I'm going to look that up after now. Yeah, yeah, God. Okay, well, anyway, guys, if you've got any spoof 80s, 90s, spy action tropes uh leave them down below i mean i would have to imagine a lot of stuff borrowing from the pierce brosnan bonds for sure uh and yeah more
Starting point is 00:16:13 puny titles in there yeah i feel like a lot of the tropes would probably be similar you would just have more brooding heroes they would be more buff they wouldn't be as hairy obviously that would be like greasy and hairless probably and one of the movie is too dead to die yeah and you would get more verbose yeah your your hero would get more verbose or have there will be more people doing cool monologue I'm thinking of Pulp Fiction you know like cool monologues and shit yeah and uh
Starting point is 00:16:40 someone who's comically stoic yeah and yeah the back story I mean part of me is thinking like you know hot shots does stuff that spoofs on like oh you know got to bring you back from you know for one last mission from your hermit you know mountain top hideaway where you've disappeared to for the last 30 years
Starting point is 00:16:58 there's lots options yeah like the I'm too old for this trope you know I guess again that goes back to the buddy cop thing but yeah there's a lot of options and I would love to see all of them absolutely thank you cap Rudy Jagnation as many of you know I got very serious about my health this year since January I've dropped nearly 50 pounds

Starting point is 00:19:08 favorite gag of the movie was and my personal favorite is definitely the tent gag but I can't wait for these reactions. I watched these movies over and over as a kid. I could see why. So I wonder like, that's the thing is like I was not
Starting point is 00:19:24 given these at the time they were out you know, as a kid. So I'm retroactively jealous. Favorite gag of the move. I think mine would be the one with World Farrell or maybe humping the laser. But I also like just the two of us song, but that was fun.
Starting point is 00:19:44 I thought that it tickled me when they kept doing the exquisite corpse, the sort of like the satellite that looks like a guy is Johnson. Get over here. you know like and just the continuing yeah handing off of that uh it's always really impressive when they do the like silly naked like oh what are we going to place in frame or have somebody pick up to you know obscure his naughty bits um and just the trope of him losing his mojo as a physical
Starting point is 00:20:16 like substance was very funny to me uh but i mean it's hard to fault the 10 gag honestly yeah and and and not that it was always like the joke but I think they did a lot of just great split screen you know Mike Myers and Mike Myers together gags you know and I think it's funny and fun and interesting that in this movie it's like finding out last time that Jim Carrey was who they had in mind to play Dr. Evil for this franchise then to become a thing where it's like Mike Myers everybody you know he's not only Austin and Dr. Rehman and he's a fat bastard and now he's also another Austin on screen and you get both the sets of teeth so I just think it's
Starting point is 00:20:55 funny that they took what wasn't originally intended and made it like a major trope of this franchise. It's funny. Yeah, no, I think they did a great job with that. Absolutely. Yeah, let us know your favorite tropes in the comments, or make your favorite gags in the comments, y'all. All right,
Starting point is 00:21:11 let's see. We got Jay Rushden. Thank you, Jay. Favorite spy gadget in the movie. Mine is the exploding pen. If you click wrong, it blows up. So this is like any spy movie. or uh i remember exploding pen no i guess it's just any any old spy movie gadget then
Starting point is 00:21:32 what do you got i'm always fan of like watch ones like watch gadgets where they got like something protruding coming out there's why there's a good one and i don't know if it's in it must be in one of the movies and i think in golden eye you could get a watched it's also like a grappling hook oh you can like shoot a little cable out of it and like swing oh that's cool it's pretty six I love that. I would definitely pick that. Didn't, many of me had like a little gadgety, like shot Wolfrow on the neck with it. Yeah, I can't remember what it.
Starting point is 00:22:04 A little blow dart is a little, yeah. Which I guess is just what it's just, it's, I feel like part of the fun of spy movies is always like, yeah, it's like, oh, it's lipstick, but it's actually a microphone or like this thing is a little camera, you know, or something. Something like wacky. Like, I don't want like a, like a tie. that if you're like near water you can take your tie off and turns into a raft that's a great idea holy crap that's a great
Starting point is 00:22:32 spy gadget you can be fun yeah you keep your your tie with you any time and whenever it's water water uh danger time you're safe baby yeah ooh or any time in a spy well it's gotten out of hand but there was a time
Starting point is 00:22:46 where they would give you like a contact lens oh yeah it's got cool friggin computer readouts or some kind of bad man had yeah he did he did and they made that a lot more plausible than i've seen it many a time past a certain point yeah um golly crazy i pulled up a list a whole list of thing yeah like oh the exploding gum is a cool one exploding gum yeah i always Remember that?
Starting point is 00:23:21 Yeah, you got to, what, chew both sides together to activate it or whatever? Something like that. Something like that. Oh, my goodness gracious. Yeah, or anything that's like a little reel-to-reel tape recorder. Spycraft gadgets. Man, that's another one. Comment yours below, gang.
Starting point is 00:23:39 Okay. Roby Bobarp Pirate. For John and Aaron Austin Powers, a spy who shagged me. Hi, guys. How's it going? We are doing well. today I have a serious question and a stupid question
Starting point is 00:23:53 number one no such thinking the stupid question well we'll see if you could time travel without any consequences and paradox like Austin when and where that was a gag
Starting point is 00:24:03 to your previous question too I thought that was very funny the whole like them looking into the camera being like don't think about the time travel mechanics don't ask any of these questions
Starting point is 00:24:14 about how any of this shit works just go with it that was fun if you could time travel without any consequences and paradoxes like Austin, when and where would you go and why? Where'd you go?
Starting point is 00:24:27 Golly! I would go to the I would go back to when did the Salem Witch Trials to I would go to the 1690s and I would see
Starting point is 00:24:46 if that shit was real and to what extent it went down. So what you want to get, watch when you get burned at the stake? I mean, I would try and intervene. You try to intervene? I would try and stop the way. By yourself?
Starting point is 00:25:00 That's right. What would you use to like try to... I have no idea. I don't know. I would get a bigger torch and a bigger pitchfork. Use your 21st century technology to spook them all the way.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Time travel to any consequences and paradoxes like Austin. Where would you go and why? I guess I would go back to just a couple of different points in my life where I would like have particularly strong regrets. And I would just like try and pull myself aside and be like, hey, talk to this person. I'm like, hey, go take this opportunity. Hey, I feel like.
Starting point is 00:25:36 Would you be looking at yourself? Would you like come as yourself? Would you disguise yourself? Or would you be like, this is me telling you? If there are no consequences and paradoxes, yeah, I would just show up. because if I show up to me and I have that experience, I'm like, oh, my God, it's me. Then I'll believe me, I guess.
Starting point is 00:25:54 I'd be more inclined to believe me than if I came in some random disguise. That's, yeah, that makes sense. I get better through to myself. Ooh, yep, I got a few of those. I would do. I'm like, hey, stay away from that person. Hey, you stick on this track. Hey.
Starting point is 00:26:12 I'm trying to come up with like a good answer. Don't step in that puddle. I wish I wished I didn't kill that fish um golly I might just go back to when I was working haunted houses clock in for myself and just relive that moment again yeah it'd be fun to relive Comic-Con 2018
Starting point is 00:26:31 2019 but we're going like real wacky with it and not within our own lives I think it'd be cool to go to like go seeing Josephine Baker in her prime you know get out of America out of America because, you know, the thing is, being, being of my complexion and being of my ethnicity, you don't really get a lot of opportunities that are friendly to you going
Starting point is 00:26:55 back in time. So you got to have to go forward or go to other countries where it's, you know, a little bit more welcomed. So I think, you know, going to see Josephine Baker, not in America, it could be really a good time. Also, going back to the 90s. Yeah, you see what the 90s are all about. wear cell phones you know jump around
Starting point is 00:27:15 wear some big pants go live the 90s adult life yeah go see what that was like oh shoot yeah take me back I want to go back yeah some fun 70s clubs would be cool or you know it would be also really dope seeing certain movies
Starting point is 00:27:33 in theaters are really popular to see what that would be sick go to the opening night of so many movies oh yeah dude oh man I would travel back I wanted to see the white stripes. I was getting tickets to see the white stripes at the Greek theater during the Akey Thump era
Starting point is 00:27:50 and then they disbanded. I never got to see the white stripes. So I would go back in time to a point at which I was sure I could see the white stripes and then I would see them play. That's a great answer. That would be pretty sick. I would fill in that gap for myself.
Starting point is 00:28:06 I don't want to see Independence Day in theaters. That would be a lot of fun. I reacted to it. But that's one of my things. favorite reactions ever done that was an amazing film um yeah dude that's probably be one of them and then the second question here if you were living in austin powers universe what would your pg 13 slash r rated last names be keep up the good work and chow from sardinia chow to you all right all right what what goofy lascivious suggestive name uh would you take
Starting point is 00:28:42 I mean Aaron Focoli. Okay. Not so much as a pun as it is just, it's just obscene. A little bit. That's one name, one possible name. What you? You could be Black Hawk. Yep.
Starting point is 00:29:04 And reference to a different video. I was thinking my name could be first name, Wiggin, last name, berries. Oh, God. Okay, okay. Hmm. Um, my first thing can be long.
Starting point is 00:29:30 And, uh, you'd just be long Johnson. Long, long johns could be fun. Uh, wiener. A little French. A little long winnaire.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Long we neer Yeah These are fun actually I would like to spend more time pondering What a good PG-13 slash art We got a lot more of those in this movie I wish I could remember them all Oh my head
Starting point is 00:29:57 Yeah Because yeah That is something like Like you know That's a trope of the James Bond movies That I am always astonished That they get away with at least or have often been
Starting point is 00:30:13 astonished they get away with because like what octopusy isn't that a character's name or something is it? Yeah there are a lot of those like you know there's a reason they brought in a lot of vagina in the last movie I'm trying to see if we got any other of those in here we got so many
Starting point is 00:30:33 random ass cameos too oh yeah which were pretty fun what was the one girl's name come man The one girl's name. It gave her a silly, sexy name. Ivana Humphalad. There you go.
Starting point is 00:30:49 That was one. I guess that's really kind of it. Yeah. Any other gross names you could think of. I like Benny Johnson, but I don't know if that works as well. Benny Johnson is just a cool name. Yeah. What about you?
Starting point is 00:31:16 Some of Cheeks? Some of Cheeks to end? This is a great brainstorming session for you guys to peer in on. Yeah, Richard McChieks. Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I like it. Ricky McChinks, there you go. Like what names could be like shortened and have like a letter. Yeah, I'm going to be, after we cut this, I'm just going to be at the board.
Starting point is 00:31:39 Oh, yeah. Come up with the perfect R-rated. connecting the dots. This is the trouble. Questions like this, like heat my brain up because then I'm like, I have to come up
Starting point is 00:31:45 with the perfect one that I can like co-sign. I'm very apprehensive when I'm just like, got to do one off the dome. Yeah. But yes, thank you guys
Starting point is 00:31:54 for chiming in with your questions. Yeah, we appreciate you. This is a lot of fun. This is very silly. This has had moments of inspiration, moments of dumb inspiration. A lot of good character work from Mike Myers.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Really enjoyed Heather Graham as his main foil and the returning the return. the returning supporting cast I like that they didn't make Will Ferrell as dark as they did last time Nope
Starting point is 00:32:17 It's still such an odd choice Yeah This is fun Fun time travel Nice way to incorporate time travel Get us back to the 60s You know It's kind of like Crocodile Dundee
Starting point is 00:32:28 You know we go from the first half We're in out of he's the fish out of water Austin in a different time Come back Austin's right at home Yeah Except you know without his mojo That's true
